Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the follow ing:
.. Keep the switch@¢ page 70, fig. 77 pulled
and depress the accele rator. The park ing
brake stays applied and prevents the vehicle
from roll ing bac kward.
"' You can release the switch @ once you are
sure that you a re develop ing enough dr iv ing
f orce at the wheels by dep ress ing the accel­
erator.
Depending on the weight of the r ig (veh icle
and tra iler) and the seve rity of the in cli ne, you
may roll backwards as you start . You can pre ­
vent rolling backwards by holding the parking
brake switch @ pulled out and accelerating -
just as you would when starting on a hill with a conventional hand brake.
Hill hold
Hill hold makes it easier to start on hills.
Requirement : The driver door must be closed
and the engine must be r unning .
The system is act ivated when the brake pedal
i s pressed wh ile the veh icle is sta tionary .
To prevent the vehicle from rolling back when
start ing , the brake power is held for a br ief
moment after re leas ing the b rake peda l. Dur­
i ng th is t ime, yo u can easily begin to move
your ve hicle.
A WARNING
- The inte lligent technology of Hill Hold
cannot overcome the lim itations im­
posed by natural phys ica l laws. The in­
creased comfort offered by Hill Hold
should not cause you to take safety risks.
- Hi ll Hold cannot hold the veh icle in all
hill start situations (for examp le, if the
ground is slippery or icy).
- If you do not begin moving immediately
after releasing the brake pedal, the veh i­
cle could begin to roll backward under
certai n circumstances . Press the b rake
-
pedal or set the parking brake immedi­
ately .
- If the engine "stalls", press the brake
pedal or set the parking brake immedi­
ately .
- Starting on inclines in stop-and-go traf­
f ic: To help prevent the vehicle from roll­
ing back when start ing, press and ho ld
the brake pedal for several seconds when
the vehicle is stationary.
Emergency braking
In the event tha t the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks .
.. In an emergency, pu ll the switch @

page 70, fig. 77 and continue to pull it to
slow your vehicle down with the parking
brake .
.. As soon as you release the switch @ or ac-
celerate, the b rak ing process stops.
If you pull the switch @ and hold it above a
speed of about S mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy brak ing funct io n is initiated . T he veh icle is
braked at all fou r whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic b rake system. The brake pe rfo rmance
is sim ila r to m akin g an emergency stop ¢_&. .
In order not to act ivate the eme rgency brak­
ing by mistake, an audib le warning tone (buz­
zer) sounds whe n the switch @ is pulled. As
soon as t he sw itch @ is re leased, or the acce l­
erator pedal is depressed, eme rgency braking
stops.
A WARNING

Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the norma l foot bra ke
has fa iled or the brake pedal is obstructed.
Using the park ing brake to perform emer­
gency braking will s low your veh icle down
as if you had made a full brake application .
The laws of phys ics cannot be suspended
even with ESC and i ts associa ted compo­
nents (ABS, ASR, EDS). In corners and
when road or weathe r cond itions are bad

Stowing luggage
Loading the luggage compartment
All luggage and other objects must be prop­
erly stowed and secured in the luggage com ­
partment.

Loose items in the luggage compartment can
shift suddenly, changing vehicle hand ling
characteristics. Loose items can also increase
the risk of serious personal injury in a sudden
vehicle maneuver or in a collision .

A WARNING
Improperly stored luggage or other items
can fly through the vehicle ca using serious
personal injury in the event of hard brak ­
ing or an accident. To help reduce the r isk
of serious personal injury:
- Always put objects, for examp le, luggage
or other heavy items in the luggage com­
partment.
- Always secure objects in the luggage
compartment using the tie-down eye lets
and suitable straps.
A WARNING
-Heavy loads will influence the way your ve-
hicle handles. To help reduce the risk of a
loss of control leading to serious personal
injury:
-Always keep in mind when transporting
heavy objects, that a change in the cen­
ter of gravity can also cause changes in
veh icle handling :
- Always distribute the load as evenly as
possible.
- Place heavy objects as far forward in
the luggage compartment as possible.
- Never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rat­
ing or the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
specified on the safety compliance stick­
er on the left door jamb. Exceeding per­
missible weight standards can cause the
veh icle to slide and handle differently.
- Please observe information on safe driv­
ing

To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas
from being drawn into the vehicle, a lways
keep the rear lid closed while driving.
- Never transport objects larger than
those fitting comp letely into the luggage
area because the rear lid cannot be fully
closed .
- If you absolutely m ust dr ive with the rear
lid open, observe the following notes to
reduce the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the Panoramic sliding sunroof *,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument
pane l,
- Switch off the air recirculat ion,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest
speed.

A lways make sure that the doors, all win­
dows, the Panoramic sliding sunroof * and
the rear lid are securely closed and locked

- After closing the rear lid, always make
sure that it is properly closed and locked.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended es­
pecially with the rear lid left open . A
child could crawl into the vehicle through
the luggage compartment and close the
rear lid becoming trapped and unable to
get out. Be ing trapped in a vehicle can
lead to serious persona l injury.
- Never let children play in or around the vehicle .
- Never let passe ngers r ide in the luggage
compartment . Ve hicle occupants must
always be properly restrained in one of
the vehicle's seating positions.

- Air c irculation helps to reduce window
fogging. Sta le air escapes to the outside
th rough vents in the trim pane l. Be su re
to keep these slots free and open.
- The t ire pressure must correspond to the
load. The t ire pressur e is shown o n the
tire p ress ure label. The tire pressure la­
bel is loc ated on the d river's s ide B-pi ll a r.
The t ire pressure label lists the recom­
mended cold ti re inflat ion pressu res for
the vehicle at its maximum capacity
weig ht and the tires that were on you r
vehicle at the time it was manufactured.

Tie-downs
The luggage compartment is equipped with
four tie-downs to secure luggage and other
items .
Use the tie-downs to secure your cargo prop­
erly

In a coll is ion, the laws of phys ics mean that
even smalle r items that are loose in the vehi­
cle will become heavy missiles that can cause

serious injury. Items in the ve hicle possess en ­
ergy which vary with vehicle speed and the
weight o f the item . Vehicle speed is the most
s ignificant factor.
Fo r example, in a fronta l collision at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a
10 -lb (5 kg) object a re about 20 times the
no rmal weight of the item. This means that
the weight of the item would sudden ly be
about 200 lbs. (90 kg) . You can imag ine the
i njur ies that a 200 lbs . (90 kg) item flying
fr eely th ro ugh the passenger compar tme nt
c ould cause in a co lli sion like this.
A WARNING
We ak, dam aged or improper str aps used
to secure items to tie -downs can fail dur­
ing hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury .
-Always use s uita ble mount ing stra ps and
properly secu re items to the tie-downs in
the l uggage compa rtme nt to he lp pre­
vent items from shift ing or f ly ing fo r­
ward as dangerous missiles .
-When the rea r seat backrest is folded
down, a lways use suitable mounting
straps and properly secure items to the
tie-downs in the luggage compartment
to hel p prevent items from fly ing for­

s enger compartment.

Why safety belts?
Frontal collisions and the law of physics
Frontal crashes create very strong forces for
people riding in vehicles .

The physical principles are simple. Both the
vehicle and the passengers possess energy
which varies w ith veh icle speed and body
weight . Engineers call this energy "kinetic en­
ergy."
The higher the speed of the vehicle and the
greater the vehicle's weight, the more energy
that has to be "absorbed" in the crash.
Vehicle speed is the most significant factor . If
the speed doubles from 15 to 30 mph (25 to
SO km/h), the energy increases 4 t imes!
Because the passengers of this vehicle are not
using safety belts¢

moving at the same speed the vehicle was
moving just before the crash, until something

The same principles apply to people sitting in
a vehicle that is involved in a frontal collision.
Even at city speeds of 20 to 30 mph (30 to 50
km/h), the forces acting on the body can
reach one ton (2,000 lbs. or 1,000 kg) or
more . At greater speeds, these forces are even
higher.
People who do not use safety belts are also
not attached to their vehicle . In a frontal colli­
sion they will also keep moving forward at the
speed their vehicle was travelling just before
the crash . Of course, the laws of physics don't
just app ly to frontal collisions, they determine
what happens in all kinds of accidents and col­
lisions.
What happens to occupants not wearing safety belts?
In crashes unbelted occupants cannot stop
themselves from flying forward and being in­
jured or killed. Always wear your safety belts!

Child restraints on the front seat - some
important things to know
~ Be sure to read the important informat ion
and head the WARNINGS for important de­
ta ils about ch ildren and Advanced Airbags
c::>page 133.
Even though your vehicle is equ ipped with an
Advanced Airbag System, make certain that
a ll c hildren, especially those 12 years and
younger, a lways ride in the back sea t properly
restrained for their age and size . The airbag
on the passenger side makes the front seat a
potentially dangerous place for a chi ld to ride.
The front seat is not the safest place for a
child in a forward-facing child safety seat. It
can be a very dangerous place for an infant or
a child in a rea rward-facing seat .
The Advanced Airbag System in your veh icle
has been certified to comply with the Requ ire­
ments of United States Federa l Motor Veh icle
Safety Standard 208 as applicable at the time
your veh icle was manufactured .
The Standard requires the front a irbag on the
passenger side to be turned off ("sup ­
pressed") if a ch ild up to about one yea r of
age restra ined in one of the rear-facing or fo r­
ward-facing infan t restra ints listed in Federal
M otor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 w ith w hic h
the Advanced A irbag System in your vehicle
was certified has been installed on the front
passenger seat. Fo r a listing of the child re­
straints that were used to certify compliance
with the US Safety Standard

The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light in the in­
strument panel te lls you when the front Ad ­
vanced A irbag on the passenger side has been
turned off by the e lectronic control unit.
Each time yo u turn on the ignition, the

few seconds and:
- will stay on if the front passenger seat is not
occupied, -
w ill s tay on i f there is a small ch ild or child
restraint on the front passenger seat,

whe n the control unit detects a tota l weight
o n the front passenger seat that req uires the
front airbag to be turned off .
If the total weight on the front passenge r
seat is more than that of a typica l 1 year -old
c h ild b ut less than the weight of a small
adult, the front airbag on the passenger side
can deploy (the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
li ght does not come on). If the PASSENGER
AIR BAG OFF
light does not come on, the
front a irbag on the passenger side has not
been turned off by the elect ronic control unit
and can deploy if the cont rol uni t senses an
impact that meets the cond itions s tored i n its

year-old ch ild is on the front passenger seat
( r egardless of whether the child is in one of

If, in exceptional circumstances, you must
install a forward or rearward-facing child
restraint on the front passenger's seat:
- Improper installation of child restraints
can reduce the ir effect iveness or even
prevent them from p roviding any protec­
t ion.
- An improperly installed child restraint
can interfere with the a irbag as it de­
ploys and serious ly inju re or even kill the
c hild -even wi th an Advanced Airbag
System.
- Always ca refully fo llow the manufactur­
er's instructions provided with the child
safety seat or carrier.
- Never pl ace additional items on the seat
t hat can incre ase the to tal weight regis­
tered by the weight -sens ing ma t and can
cause injury in a crash.

Your vehicle is equipped with an "Advanced
Airbag System" in compliance with United
States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
(FMVSS) 208 as applicable at the time your
vehicle was manufactured. The safety belts
for the seats have "pretensioners" that help
to take slack out of the belt system . T he pre­
tens ioners are also act ivated by the elect ron ic
control unit for the airbag system.
The front safety belts also have load lim iters
to help reduce the forces appl ied to the body
i n a crash .
The airbag for the driver is in the steering
wheel hub¢
fig. 117 and the airbag for the
front passenger is in the instr ument panel
¢ fig . 118 . The gene ral locat ion of the a irbags
is marked "AIRBAG".
The re is a lot you need to know about the air ­
bags in your vehicle. We urge you to read the
detailed information about airbags, safety
belts and child sa fety in this and the other
c h ap ters that ma ke up the owner's liter ature.
Please be sure to heed the WARNINGS -they
are extremely important for your safety and
the safety of your passengers, especially in­
fants and small children.

that deployment under these special
conditions is impossible in all conceiva­

the useful life of your vehicle.
- The Advanced A irbag System can deploy
in accordance with the "low risk" opt ion
under the U.S. Federa l Standard if a c hild
that is heavier than the typical one-year
old child is o n the front passenger seat
and the other cond itions for airbag de­
ployment are met .
- Acc ident statist ics have shown that chil­
dre n are generally safe r in the rea r seat
area than in the front seating posit io n.
- For their own safety, all children, espe­
cially 1 2 yea rs and younger, sho uld al­
ways ride in the b ack properly restrained
for their age and size .
Advanced front airbag system
-
Your vehicle is equipped w it h a front Advanced
Airbag System in comp liance with United
States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
208 as applicable at the time your vehicle was
manufactured.
The front Advanced Airbag System supp le ­
ments the safety belts to provide additiona l
protection for the driver's and front passeng­
er's heads and upper bodies in frontal crashes.
The airbags inflate only in frontal impacts
when the vehicle decelerat io n is high enough .

The front Advanced Airbag System for the
front seat occupants is not a substitute for
your safety be lts . Rather, it is part of the over­
all occupant restra int system in your vehicle.
Always remember that the airbag system can
only he lp to protect you, if you are sitting up ­
rig ht, wearing your safety belt and wear ing it
proper ly. This is why you and your passe ngers
mus t always be prope rly restrained, not jus t
because the law req uires you to be.
T he Advanced A irbag System in your vehicle
has been ce rtified to meet the "low risk" re­
quirements for 3 and 6 yea r-old ch ildren o n
the passenger side and very small ad ults o n
the driver side . The low risk deployment crite­
ria are intended to help reduce the risk o f in ­
jury through interaction with the front airbag that can occur, for example, by being too
close to the steering wheel and instrument
panel when the airbag inflates.
In addition, the system has been certified to
comply with the "s uppression" requirements
of the Safety Standard, to turn off the front
airbag for infants
12 months old and younger
who are restrained on the front passenger
seat in child rest raints that are listed in the
Standard ¢
page 135, Child restraints and
Advanced Airbags.
"Suppress ion" requires the front a irbag on the
passenger side to be turned off if:
- a child up to about one year of age is re­
strained on the front passenger seat in one
of the rear -fac ing or forward-facing infant
restrai nts listed in Federal Motor Vehicle
Safety Standard 208 with which the Ad­
vanced Ai rbag System in your ve hicl e was
cert ified . For a listing of t he chi ld res traints
tha t were used to certify you r vehicle's com ­
pliance with the US Safety Standard

-weight less than a thresho ld level stored in
the control unit is detected on the front pas­
senger seat .
When a person is detected on the front pas­ senger seat, weighing more than the total
weight of a chi ld that is about 1 year old •

its memory .
I f the total we ight on the front passenger
seat is more than that of a typical

-a ch ild who has o utgrown child rest raints is
on the front passenger seat.
If the front passenger airbag is turned off, the
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF light in the center
of the instrument pa nel w il l come on and stay
on.
The front a irbag on the passenger side may
not deploy (the PAS SENGER AIR BAG OFF
light does not ill uminate and stay lit) if:
- a small adult or teenager is on the front pas ­
senger seat
- a passenger who is not sitt ing upright with
their back against a non-reclined backrest
with their feet on the veh icle floo r in front
of the seat is on the fro nt passenger seat.
If the front passenger airbag deploys, the Federal Standard requires the airbag to meet
the "low risk" deployment cr iteria to help re- duce the risk o
f injury through interaction
with the airbag . "Low risk" deployment occurs
in those crashes that take place at lower de­
ce lerat ions as defined in the electronic control

Alw ays remembe r: Even though your vehicle

place for ch ildren is properly restrained on the
back seat . Please be sure to read the impor­

will be serious ly injured and can be killed if
the front airbag inflates -even with an Ad­
vanced A irbag System.
-Altho ugh the Advanced Airbag System in
your veh icle is designed to turn off the
front airbag when a rearward-facing
child restraint has been installed on the
front passenge r seat, nobody can abso­
lutely g uarantee that dep loyment is im­
possible in all con ceivable situations that
may happen dur ing the usefu l life of your
vehicle .
- The infla ting airbag will h it the c hild
safety seat or infant carrier wi th great
force and will smash the child safety seat and child against the backrest, center
armrest, door, or roof.
- Always install rearward-facing chi ld re­
straints in the back seat .
