out the convertible locking retractor for chi ld
restra ints.
I f the convertible locking retractor shou ld be
activated inadvertently, the safety belt must
be unfastened and guided completely back in­
to its stowed position to deactivate this fea ­
ture.
If the convertib le locking retractor is not
deactivated, the safety belt will gradually be­
come tighter and uncomfortable to wear .
A WARNING
Improperly installed child safety seats in­
crease the risk of ser ious personal injury
and death in a collision.
- Never unfasten the safety belt to deacti­
vate the convert ible lock ing ret ractor for
c hild restraints while the veh icle is mov­
ing. You would not be restrained and

LATCH Lower

Child Restraint System anchors and how
are they related to child safety
To provide a s imp le r and more pract icable way
to attach the ch ild res traint on the veh icle
seat, Federa l regu lations require specia l lower
anchorages in vehicles and devices on new
chi ld restraints to attach to the vehicle ancho­
rages.
The combination of the tether anchorages and the lower anchorages is now generally called
the
LA TCH system fo r "L ower Anchorages and
T ethers for Children."
F orward- facing child restraints manufactured
after September 1, 1999, are required by U .S.
Child Sa fet y 187
federa l reg ulations to comply with new child
head movement performance req uirements.
These new performance req uirements make a
tether necessary on most new child seats.
Installing a ch ild restra int that requires a top
tethe r without one can seriously impair the
performance of the c hild restra int and its abil ­
ity to protect the child in a coll is ion. Insta lling
a child res traint tha t requires a top tether
without the top tether may be a violat ion of
state law.
Child restraint manufacturers offer LATCH
lower anchorages on their child seats w ith
hook -on or push-on connectors attached to
adjustable straps .
In add ition to the LATCH lower anchorages,
these child restraint systems usually require
the use of tether straps to he lp keep the ch ild
restraint firmly in place .
A WARNING
Improper installat ion of child restra ints
will increase the r isk of injury a nd death in
a cr ash.
- Always follow the instr uctions provided
by the manufa cture r of the child re­
s traint yo u intend to install in your vehi­
cle.
- Never inst all a child restraint withou t a
properly attached top tether strap if the
child restraint manufacturer's instruc ­
tions require the top tether strap to be
used.
- Improper use of child rest raint LATCH
lowe r ancho rage points can lead to injury
in a collision . The LATCH lower anchorage
points are designed to withstand on ly
those loads imposed by correctly fitted
child restraints .
- Never mount two child restra int systems
on one LATC H lower anchorage point.
- Never secure or attach any luggage or
other item to the LATCH lower anchorag-

- Never mount more than one chi ld re­
straint to a single tether or to a lower an­
chorage point. Attaching two child re­
straints to a single anchorage point can cause the anchorage to fail and cause se­
rious personal inju ry in a crash.

- Remove the guidance fixtures before
fold ing the rear seatback to prevent
damaging the seat cushion.
- To attach the child restraint secure ly, the
seat must be moved to the farthest rear pos ition, the seat height set to the low­
est posit ion and the head restra int must
be adjusted to the verti cal position

-If you leave the guidance fixtures instal­
l ed for several days, they could leave a
mark on the upho lstery o n the sea t cush ­
i on and backrest in the a rea that the
guidance fixtures were insta lled . The up­
ho lstery would also be permanently
stretched around the guidance fixtures.
This applies especially to leather seats.
Installing a child restraint with LATCH
lower anchorages
Whenever you install a child restraint always
follow the child restraint manufacturer's in­
structions.

Electronic Stabilization
Control (ESC)
Description
ESC helps to improve road holding and vehicle
dynamics to help reduce the probability of
skidd ing and loss of veh icle control. It works
only when the eng ine is running. ESC detects
certain difficult driv ing s ituations, including
when the vehicle is beginning to spin (yaw)
out of cont ro l and helps you to get the vehicle
back under control by select ively brak ing the
wheels, and/or red ucing engine powe r and
p roviding steering assistance to help hold the
ve hicle on the driver's intended course . The in­
dicator light
m in the instrument cluster
blinks when ESC is taking action to help you
control the vehicle.
ESC has limitations.
It is important to remem­
ber that ESC cannot overcome the laws of
phys ics. It will not a lways be able to help out
under all conditions you may come up against.
For example, ESC may not always be able to
h elp you master situat ions where there is a
sudden change in the coefficient of fr iction of
the road surface. When there is a sect io n of
d ry road that is s udden ly cove red with water,
slush o r snow, ESC canno t perform the same
way it would on the dry su rface.
If the vehicle
hydroplanes (rides on a c ush ion of wate r in­
stead of the road surface), ESC wi ll not be
ab le to he lp you steer the veh icle because con-

tact with the pavement has been interrupted
and the vehicle cannot be braked or steered .
D uring fast corner ing, particular ly on wind ing
roads, ESC cannot always deal as effectively
with difficult dr iv ing s ituations than at lower
speeds. When towing a trailer, ESC is not able
to help you regain control as it would if you
were not tow ing a trailer.
Always adjust your speed and driving style to road, traffic and weather conditions . ESC can­
not override the vehicle's physical lim its, in­
crease the availab le tract ion, or keep a veh icle
o n the road if road departu re is a result of
driver ina ttent io n. Instead , ESC imp roves the
poss ibility of keep ing t he vehicle under con­
trol and on the road during extreme maneu­
vers by using the driver's steering i nputs to
help keep the vehicle go ing in the intended di­
rect ion. If you are traveling at a speed that
causes you to run off the road before ESC can
provide any assistance, you may not experi­
ence the benefits of ESC.
ESC includes and/or works together with the
anti-lock braking system
(ABS), brake assist
system, anti -slip regulation (ASR), electronic
differential lock (EDL), dynam ic steer ing* and
selective wheel torque contro l. ESC is switch­
ed on all the time. In cer tain situations when
yo u need less traction, yo u can switch off ASR
by press ing the b utton above ~

ASR on again when you no longer need less
traction.
Anti -lock braking system (ABS )
ABS prevents the whee ls from loc king up
when b rak ing. The vehicle can st ill be stee red
even during hard braking . App ly steady pres­
su re to the brake peda l. Do not pump the ped­
al. A pulsing in the brake pedal indicates that
the system is helping you to brake the vehicle.
Brake assi st sy stem
T he brake ass ist system can dec rease braking
distance . It increases braking power when the
driver presses the brake peda l quickly in emer­
gency s ituations. You must press and hold the
brake pedal unti l the situation is over. In

vehicles with adaptive cruise control*, the brake assist system is more sensitive if the
d istance detected to the vehicle ahead is too
smal l.
Anti-slip regulati on (ASR )
ASR reduces engine power when the d rive
wheels begin to spin and adapts the force to
the road conditions. This makes it easier to
start, accelerate and drive up hills.
Electronic diffe rential lock (EDL )
The EDL brakes wheels that are spinn ing and
transfers the drive power to the other d rive
wheel or whee ls if the vehicle is equipped with
all whee l drive*. This function is available up
to about 75 mph (120 km/h).
I n extreme cases, ED L automatica lly switches
off to help keep the brake on the braked whee l
from overheating . EDL wi ll switch on again au­
tomatically when conditions have returned to normal.
Dynamic steer ing*
On vehicles with dynamic steering, ESC he lps
stabilize the steering in certain situations .
Selective wheel torque control
The se lective wheel torque cont ro l operates
when dr iving thro ugh cu rves. The front wheel
on the ins ide of the curve or both w heels on
the inside of the curve are braked selective ly
as needed. This minimizes sliding in the front
wheels and a llows for more precise driving
through curves. The applicab le system may
not activate when driving in wet or snowy con­
d itions .
Post- coll isio n br ake assis t
"Post-collision brake assist" can assist the
driver during a collision by reducing the dan­
ger of slipp ing and further collision and by au­
tomatic braking.
"Post-collision brake assist" functions d uring
collisions when the a irbag contro l modu le de­
tects a trigger level and the collision takes place at a certa in driving speed. The brak ing
of the vehicle happens automatically via the ESC as
long as the ESC, the brake system, and
the vehicle electrical system are not damaged
from the collision.
T he following ac tivit ies override the au toma t­
ic braking during a co llision:
- I f the driver p resses the acce le rator pedal.
There is no automa tic brak ing .
- When the force on the press brake peda l is
st ronger tha n the braking force initiated by
t he system. The veh icle is manua lly braked.
- When the ESC is damaged, the "Post-colli­
sion brake assist" is not available.
,&. WARNING
- ESC, ABS, ASR, ED L, dynamic steeri ng *
and the select ive wheel torque control
cannot overcome the laws of physics .
This is especially important on s lippery
or wet roads. If the systems beg in acting
to stabilize your veh icle, you should im­
mediately change your speed to match
the road and traffic conditions. Do not let the increased safety provided by
these systems tempt you to take r is ks.
D oing so will increase the risk of a loss of
veh icle contro l, col lision and ser ious per ­
sonal injuries.
- Always ad apt your speed to road, traffi c
and weather conditions . The risk of los ­
ing contro l of the vehicle increases when
driving too fast, espec ially through
curves and on slippery or wet roads, and
when dr iv ing too close to vehicles up
ahead. ESC, ABS, the brake ass ist sys­
tem, EDL, ASR, dynam ic steering* and
the selective wheel torque cont ro l can­
not prevent collisions.
- Always accelerate with special care on
even, smooth s urfaces such as those that
are wet or covered with i ce and snow.
The drive wheels can spin even w ith
these assistance systems tha t cannot al­
ways he lp to red uce the risk of loss of ve -

sharp objects to come into contact
with the safety belts. This could cause
damage to the belt webbing.
- If there is damage to the webbing, the
connections, the retractors or the buck­ les, have them replaced by an author­
ized Audi dealer or a qualified work­
shop.
- Textiles/Vinyl/Alcantara
- Never treat Vinyl/Alcantara with leath-
er care products, solvents, floor polish,
shoe polish, stain remover or similar
products.
- To avoid damage, have stubborn stains
removed by an authorized Audi dealer
or a qualified workshop.
- Never use steam cleaners, brushes,
hard sponges, etc. when cleaning.
- Do not turn on the seat heating* to dry
the seat.
- Objects with sharp edges such as zip­
pers, rivets on clothing or belts can
cause damage to the surface.

Cold diesel engines normally produce louder
noises during winter conditions than during
warmer periods . In addition, the exhaust gas ­
es may be light blue in color until the engine has warmed up.
.&_ WARNING
Never use starting assist fluids. They may
be potentially explos ive or cause a "run­
away" engine condition . Th is could resu lt
in ser ious persona l injury and eng ine dam­
age.
- Your vehicle's diesel engine was de­ signed so ley for use with ULSD No. 2.
Therefo re, never use gaso line, heat ing
oi l or other fuels. These fuels contain
substances that will severely damage the
fuel system and the engine. Such dam­
age will not be covered by your New Ve­ hicle limited Warranty.
- If you put any amount of incorrect fue l in
the fue l tank, do not start the engine un­
der any circumstances. Immediately con­
tact the nearest authorized Audi dealer
or authorized Audi Service Facility for as­
s istance. These fuels contain substances
that can severely damage the fuel sys­
tem and the engine if the engine is start­
ed .
- Do not mix additives such as "flow im­
provers", gasoline or other substances
with ULSD No. 2.
Fuel tank
Fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is located on the right rear
side panel behind the fuel filler flap .
If the power locking system should fail, you
can still open the flap manually- for detailed instructions see
c> page 2 2 4 .

The label on the inside of the fuel f iller flap
te lls you the correct fue l for your vehicle. For
more information about fuel specifications,

Your vehicle fuel tank has an on board refuel­ ling vapor recovery system. This feature helps
to prevent fuel vapors from escaping from the
tank and polluting the environment while you
refuel your vehicle. In order to fill the tank
proper ly while protecting the environment,
please follow this refueling procedure careful­
ly .
.&_ WARNING
Under normal operating cond itions , never
ca rry addit ional fue l conta iners in your car .
Gas canisters and other containers used to
transport fuel can be dangerous. Such con­
tainers, fu ll or empty, may leak and could
cause a fire in a collision. If you must
transport fuel to use for your lawn mower,
snow b lower, etc ., be very careful and al­
ways observe local and state laws regard­
i ng the use, transportation and storage of
such fuel containers. Make certa in the con­
tainer meets industry standards (ANSI/
ASTM
F852 -86).

Never drive your veh icle until the fuel tank
i s completely empty. The irregula r supply
of fue l can cause misfir ing. Gasoline cou ld
enter the exhaust system and damage the
catalytic converter.
