IIJ Sport differential: overheating
The transmission temperature has increased
sign ificantly due to the sporty dr iving manner .
D rive in a less sporty manner until the tem­
perature returns to the normal range and the
indicato r light switches of .

Contact your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified workshop if the sport different ial
is faulty or ma lfunctioning. The repa ir
must be performed by trained personnel
using the correct oil in order to ensure
safety.
¢ Q Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal.
Whenever you use the left Nor the right a
turn signal, the indicator light blinks. When
you use the emergency flashers, both indica­
tor lights flash .
If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out,
the turn signal will blink tw ice as fast as nor­
mal. Carefully drive to your authorized Audi
dealer immediately to have the malfunct ion
corrected. The indicator light does not indi­
cate a malfunction if a turn signa l on the trail­
er or on the vehicle fails in trailer towing
mode.

115-volt socket
A ppl ies to vehicles: with 115-volt socket
The 115-vo lt socket can o nly be used when
the eng ine is running ¢,&. . Whe n you push
the connector a ll the way into the socket, the
child safety mechan ism releases and cu rrent
f lows through the socket.
Equipment that can be connected
Elect rical devices can be connected to the 115
volt socket in the veh icle . Power consumption at
the 115-volt socket must not exceed 150
watts (300 watts peak) . Check the power con­
s u mption of the equipment on the mode l
plate.
LED on the socket
- The socket is ready for use when the L ED is
green.
- I f the L ED blin ks red, there is a ma lf u nct ion.
The socket wi ll swi tch off automatica lly due
to overc urrent or overheating . The socket
w ill switch on aga in a utomat ica lly after a
coo l-down period. Any devices that are con­
nected and switched on will activate again
automatically ¢

- The sockets and the electrical accesso ries
connected to them operate only when
the ignition is switched on. Inc orrect us­
a ge can lead to ser ious injur ies or bu rns.
T o reduce the risk of inju ries, never leave
chi ldren unatten ded in the veh icle with
the vehicle key .
- H eavy eq uipment or plugs with in tegrat­
e d power supply units can damage the
socket and lead to injur ies .
- Sto re a ll connected e quipment securely
while the vehicle is moving so that the y
cannot be thrown t hro ugh the veh icle in
the event of a braking maneuver or an
accident.
- Never sp ill any liquids on the socket. I f
any mo isture gets into the socket, make
certain that all the moisture has dried up
before us ing the socket again .
- Equipment that is connected to the vehi­
cle socket can heat up mo re than it does
when connected to the public gr id.
- When us ing adapters and exte ns io n
cords, the child safety for the 115-volt
socket is d isabled and the soc ket is live.
- Never i nse rt anything other than the
p lug of an appropr iate e lectr ical accesso·
ry into th e socket, especia lly t hings that
conduc t electr ic ity, e.g. meta l pens, knit­
t ing nee dles, etc. in to the co ntacts of the
1 15 -volt socket.

vehicles with adaptive cruise control*, the brake assist system is more sensitive if the
d istance detected to the vehicle ahead is too
smal l.
Anti-slip regulati on (ASR )
ASR reduces engine power when the d rive
wheels begin to spin and adapts the force to
the road conditions. This makes it easier to
start, accelerate and drive up hills.
Electronic diffe rential lock (EDL )
The EDL brakes wheels that are spinn ing and
transfers the drive power to the other d rive
wheel or whee ls if the vehicle is equipped with
all whee l drive*. This function is available up
to about 75 mph (120 km/h).
I n extreme cases, ED L automatica lly switches
off to help keep the brake on the braked whee l
from overheating . EDL wi ll switch on again au­
tomatically when conditions have returned to normal.
Dynamic steer ing*
On vehicles with dynamic steering, ESC he lps
stabilize the steering in certain situations .
Selective wheel torque control
The se lective wheel torque cont ro l operates
when dr iving thro ugh cu rves. The front wheel
on the ins ide of the curve or both w heels on
the inside of the curve are braked selective ly
as needed. This minimizes sliding in the front
wheels and a llows for more precise driving
through curves. The applicab le system may
not activate when driving in wet or snowy con­
d itions .
Post- coll isio n br ake assis t
"Post-collision brake assist" can assist the
driver during a collision by reducing the dan­
ger of slipp ing and further collision and by au­
tomatic braking.
"Post-collision brake assist" functions d uring
collisions when the a irbag contro l modu le de­
tects a trigger level and the collision takes place at a certa in driving speed. The brak ing
of the vehicle happens automatically via the ESC as
long as the ESC, the brake system, and
the vehicle electrical system are not damaged
from the collision.
T he following ac tivit ies override the au toma t­
ic braking during a co llision:
- I f the driver p resses the acce le rator pedal.
There is no automa tic brak ing .
- When the force on the press brake peda l is
st ronger tha n the braking force initiated by
t he system. The veh icle is manua lly braked.
- When the ESC is damaged, the "Post-colli­
sion brake assist" is not available.
,&. WARNING
- ESC, ABS, ASR, ED L, dynamic steeri ng *
and the select ive wheel torque control
cannot overcome the laws of physics .
This is especially important on s lippery
or wet roads. If the systems beg in acting
to stabilize your veh icle, you should im­
mediately change your speed to match
the road and traffic conditions. Do not let the increased safety provided by
these systems tempt you to take r is ks.
D oing so will increase the risk of a loss of
veh icle contro l, col lision and ser ious per ­
sonal injuries.
- Always ad apt your speed to road, traffi c
and weather conditions . The risk of los ­
ing contro l of the vehicle increases when
driving too fast, espec ially through
curves and on slippery or wet roads, and
when dr iv ing too close to vehicles up
ahead. ESC, ABS, the brake ass ist sys­
tem, EDL, ASR, dynam ic steering* and
the selective wheel torque cont ro l can­
not prevent collisions.
- Always accelerate with special care on
even, smooth s urfaces such as those that
are wet or covered with i ce and snow.
The drive wheels can spin even w ith
these assistance systems tha t cannot al­
ways he lp to red uce the risk of loss of ve -

Catalytic converter

It is very important that your emission con­
trol system (catalytic converter) is function­
ing properly to ensure that your vehicle is run­
ning in an environmentally sound manner .

The catalytic converter is an eff ic ient "clean­
up" device built into the exhaust system of
the vehicle. The catalyti c converter burns
many of the pollutants in the exhaust gas be­
fore they are released into the atmosphere.
The exclus ive use of unleaded fuel is cr itically
important for the l ife of the cata lytic convert­
e r and proper functioning of the engine.
A WARNING
T he temperature of the exhaust system is
high, both when driving and after stopping
the engine .
- Never touch the exhaust tail pipes once
they have become hot. This could result
in burns.
- Do not park or operate the vehicle in
areas where the hot exhaust system may
come in contact with dry grass, brush,
fuel spill or other material which can
cause a fire.
- Do not apply additional undercoating or
rustproofing on or near the exhaust
man ifold, exhaust p ipes, catalytic con­
verter or heat shields . During driving, the
substance used for undercoating cou ld
overheat and cause a fire.
@) Note
- Be aware that just one tank f illing with
leaded fuel will al ready seriously de­
grade the perfo rmance of the cata lytic
conve rter. -
Do not exceed the correct engine oil level
i=>page 234.
-Do not drive until the fue l tank becomes
completely empty . The engine co uld m is­
fire . Unburned fuel could also get into
the exhaust system and this cou ld cause
the catalytic converter to overheat.
- Do not switch off the ignition while the
vehicle is mov ing .
- Do not continue to ope rate your vehicle
under these conditions, as otherwise fuel
can reach the catalyt ic converter. Th is
cou ld result in overheating of the con­
verter, requir ing its replacement .
- To assure efficient operation of the Emis­
sion Control System:
- Have you r vehicle maintained p roperly
and in accordance w ith the service rec­
ommendations in your Warranty & Maintenance book let.
- Lack of prope r maintenance as we ll as
improper use of the vehicle wi ll impair
the function of the em ission contro l
system and could lead to damage.
@) For the sa ke of the en vironment
Even when the Emission Control System is
ope rat ing properly, the exhaust gas can
have a sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under
some operat ing states. This depends on
the sulfur content of the fuel being used .
Usi ng a different brand of fuel may help,
or f illing the tank with lead-free super
grade gasoline.
Diesel particulate filter
Applies to vehicles: with diese l eng ine
The diesel part icu late filter filters nearly all of
the soot pa rticles out of the exhaust . T he fil­
te r cleans itself automat ica lly unde r no rma l
dr iv ing cond itions . If the filte r cannot clean it­
self (for example, because you are on ly driving
short distances), the filter becomes clogged
with soot and the

- Before changing your oil , first make sure
you know where you can properly dispose
of the used oil.
- Always dispose of used engine oil proper­
l y. Do not dump it on garden soi l, wood­
ed areas, into open streams or down
sewage dra ins.
- Recycle used engine oil by taking it to a
used engine oil collection facility in your
area, or contact a service station .
Engine cooling system
Coolant
The engine coolant performs two functions: it
keeps the engine from overheating and it pro­ tects the engine from freezing in the winter.
The cooling system is sea led and generally re­
qu ires little attention .
The cooling system has been filled at the fac ­
tory with a pe rmanent coolant which does not
need to be c hanged. The coolant consists of a
mixture of spec ia lly conditioned water and the
manufacturer 's glycol-based coo lant add i-
tive G l3 antifreeze with ant icorrosion addi ­
tives (50% for USA models ; 60% for Canadian
mod els). This mixture both assures the nec es­
sary frost protection and protects metal com­ ponents in the engine's cooling sys tem from
corrosion and scaling . It a lso raises the boil­
ing point of the coolant .
Do not red uce the concentration of the coo l­
ant in the summer by adding plain water.
The
proportion of coolant add it ive mu st be at
l e a st 50 % but not more than 60 %
to main­
tain antifreeze protection and cooling efficien­
cy . If the coolant frost prote ct ion is too low,
the coo lant cou ld freeze and damage the veh i­
cle hea ting and eng ine cooling system.
For yea r-round d riving, antifreeze is added at
the fac to ry for temperatures down to:
-- 31°F( -35°C)USA
- -40 °F ( -40 °C) Canada. If
you must add coolant, use a mixture o f wa ­
ter and coolant additive . Mixing the coo lant
additive with distilled water is recommended.

- Before winter sets in, have the coo lant
checked to see if the coolant additive in
your vehicle is sufficient to meet the cli­ mate conditions . This is especia lly impor­
tant if you live in a reg ion where the win­
ter is ex treme ly cold. If ne cessa ry, i n­
crease the pr opo rtion of coo lant add itive
t o 60%.
- Whe n adding coolant additive to yo ur
c ooling sys tem, remembe r:
- We recommend using on ly coolant ad ­
d itive Gl2++ or Gl3 for your vehicle .
This coolant additive is availab le at au­
thor ized Audi dealers . Other types of
ant ifreeze can s ignificant ly reduce cor­
rosion protection. The resulti ng cor ro­
sion can ca use a loss o f coolan t and se­
rio us engine damage.
- Do not add any type of rad iator leak seal­
a nt to yo ur vehicle 's engine coolant.

your cooling system and co uld resu lt in
damage not covered by yo ur New Vehicle

Checking the engine coolant level
The engine coolant level can be checked with
a quick glance .

Before you check anything in the engine com­
partment,
a lway s read and he ed all WARN ­
INGS ¢ & in Working in the engine compart­
ment on page 228.
Park your vehicle on a level surface.
~ Switch off the ignition.
~ Read the engine coolant leve l from the cool­
ant expansion tank¢
fig. 204, ¢ page 230.
With a cold engine, the coolant level should
be between the "min" and "max" markings.
When the engine is warm, the level may be sl ightly above the ''max" marking.
The location of the coolant expansion tank
can be seen in the engine compartment illus­
tration ¢
page 230 .
To obtain an accurate reading, the engine
must be switched off.
The expansio n tank in your vehicle is equipped
with an electric coolant level sensor.
When t he coo lant level is too low, the warning
light in the Auto-Check System¢
page 15 will
illuminate unti l yo u add coolant and the level
has been restored to normal. Even thoug h
there is an electric coolant level sensor, we
still recommend you check the coolant level
from time to time.
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling
system. In the event of coolant loss, the cool-

ing system shou ld be inspected immediately
by your authorized Audi dealer . It is not
eno ugh merely to add coo lant .
In a
s ealed system, losses can occu r on ly if
the boiling point of the coo lant is exceeded as
a resu lt of overheating.
A WARNING
The cooling system is under pressure and
can get very hot. Red uce the risk of scald­
ing from hot coolant by follow ing these
steps.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool
down.
- Protect your face, hands and arms from
escaping flu id a nd steam by cover ing the
cap with a la rge, th ick rag.
- Turn the cap slowly and very carefully in
a counter-clockwise d irect ion while ap­
p lyi ng lig ht, dow nward pressure on the
top of the cap.
- To avo id being burned, do not sp ill anti­
freeze o r coolan t on the exhaust system
or ho t engine parts. Und er certa in cond i­
tions, the ethylene gly co l in engine coo l­
an t can catch fire.
