Anti -slip regulation (ASR )
ASR reduces engine power when the drive
wheels begin to spin and adapts the force to
the road condit ions. This makes it eas ier to
start, accelerate and drive up hills.
Electronic differential lock (EDL )
The ED L brakes wheels that are spinn ing and
transfers the d rive power to the other wheels.
This f unct ion is not availab le at h igher speeds.
In extreme cases, EDL automat ically switches
off to help keep the brake on the braked whee l
from overheating. EDL w ill switch on aga in au­
tomatically when conditions have returned to norma l.
St eering recommendat ion
The ESC helps to stabilize the vehicle by
cha nging the steering to rque.
In vehicles with dynam ic steering*, ESC also
helps to stabilize the steering in critical s itua­
tions .
Select ive w heel to rque control
Selective wheel torque control is used when
driving on curves . The front wheel on the in­
side of the curve or both wheels on the inside
of the curve are braked selectively as needed.
This a llows more prec ise driving in curves. The
applicable system may not activate when d riv­
ing i n wet or snowy conditions.
.&_ WARNING
- T he ESC and its integrated systems can­
not overcome the limits posed by natural physical laws
. This is especially impor­
tant on slippery or wet roads. If the sys­ tems beg in acting to stabilize your vehi­
cle, you should immediately change your
speed to match the road and traffic con­
d itions . Do not let the increased safety
p rovided by these systems tempt you to
take risks. Do ing so will increase the ri sk
of a loss of veh icle cont ro l, collision and
serio us personal inj uries.
- Always adapt your speed to road, traffic
and weather conditions . The risk of los ­
ing control of the vehicle increases when
driving too fast , especially through
curves and on slippery or wet roads, and
when dr iv ing too close to vehicles up
ahead . The ESC and its integrated sys­
tems cannot a lways prevent collisions -
there is still a risk of acc idents!
- Always accelerate with special care on
even, smooth su rfaces such as those that
are wet or covered with ice and snow .
The drive wheels can spin even w ith
these assistance systems that c annot al­
ways he lp to red uce the risk of loss of ve­
h icle control.
(D Tips
- ABS and ASR only wo rk correctly when
all four wheels are equipped wi th iden ti­
cal tires. D ifferen t tire sizes can lead to a
reduction in engine power.
- Yo u may hear noises when the systems
descr ibed are workin g.

l ow about SO mph (80 km/h), the rear spoil­
er retracts automatically.
Manual mode
- Manual deployment: Tappi ng briefly on the
switch

10 mph (20 km/h), ret ract the rear spoiler
by pressing and holding the switch

Indicator lights
1,1 /. Rear spoiler: system malfunction!
The rear spoiler may not have extended due to
a malfunction. This could change the vehicle's
driving characteristics at high speeds. Do not
exceed 85 mph (140 km/h). Drive to your au­
thorized Audi dealer immediate ly to have the
malfunction corrected . The co lor of the indica­
tor light depend s on the veh icle speed.
A WARNING
Dr iv ing at higher speeds w ithout the rear
spoiler deployed can impair handling char­
acteristics, making the veh icle harder to
control.
-Always make sure that the spoiler is de­
ployed when driving at speeds over
85 mph (140 km/h). If th e rear spoiler
wa rning/ind icator light in the instru­
ment cluster comes on, the rear spoiler
may not have deployed.
- Never drive at speeds higher than
85 mph (140 km/h) if the spoiler is not
dep loyed. Have the spoiler inspected as
soon as possible by an authorized A udi
dealer or qualified workshop.
- Always obey speed limits and other traf­
fic laws.
A WARNING
Improper operation of the rear spoiler can
cause crushing injuries. -
Always make sure that nobody, especially
children, is in the way when the rear
spoiler is deployed or retracted.
(D Note
- Never push the vehicle or apply force to
the rear spoiler -it could be damaged.
- To prevent damage to the rear spoiler do
not lean or place anything on it .
- Only operate the rear spoiler man ually
when the rear lid is closed and the rear
spoiler moving parts are not blocked.
Otherw ise, damage co uld occur.
(D Tips
Clean the spoiler compartment every 2 to
3 months. The spoiler compartment must
always be free of ice, snow, leaves or other
debris.

What affects braking efficiency?
Operating conditions and driving habits
The brakes on today's automobiles are still
subject to wear, depending largely on operat­
ing condit ions and driving hab its
r:::;, ,& . On
vehicles that are either dr iven mostly in stop­
and-go city traff ic or are dr iven hard, the
brake pads should be checked by your author­
ized Audi dea ler more often than specified in
the
Warranty & Maintenance booklet. Failure
to have your brake pads inspected can result
in reduced brake performance.
On steep slopes , you sho uld use the braking
effect o f the engine . This way, you prevent un­
necessary wear on the brake system . If you
must use your brakes, do not hold the brakes
down cont inuous ly. Pump the brakes at inter­
vals.
Moisture or road salt
Under certain conditions, for example, when
driving through water or very heavy rain, or
even after washing your vehicle, the braking .,..

der any circumstances. Immediately con­
tact the nearest author ized Audi dealer
or authorized Audi Service Facility for as­
s istance. These fuels contain substances
that can severely damage the fuel sys­
tem and the engin e if the engine is start­
ed.
Fuel tank
Fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is located on the r ight rear
side panel behind the fuel f iller flap.
If the power loc king system should fail, you
can st ill open the flap manually -for detai led
instructions see ¢
page 221.

The label on the inside of the fuel filler flap
tells you the cor rec t f uel for yo ur vehicle . For
more in formation about fuel specificat ions,

Your veh icle fuel tank has an on board refue l­
ling vapor recove ry system . T his feature he lps
to p revent fuel vapo rs from escaping from the
tank and polluting the environment whi le you
refuel your ve hicle. In order to fill the tank
properly whi le protect ing the e nv ironment,
p lease follow t his refueling procedure careful­
ly .

Refuelling procedure
.. Inse rt the fue l nozzle from the gasoline
pump into the fue l filler neck as far as it will
go.
.. Se lect a medium refuelling rate so that the
no zzle switches off automatica lly when the
tank is full.
Putting the fuel cap back on
.. After filling your tank, twist the fuel fi ller
cap clockwise as far as it will go.
.. Close the fuel filler flap.
To avoid fuel spi lling or evaporating from the
fuel tank always close fuel fi ller cap properly
and completely. An improperly closed fuel fill­
er cap may a lso cause the MIL lamp
q poge 29
to come on.
A WARNING
Improper refueling or handling of fue l can
cause fire, explosion and severe burns .
- Fuel is highly flammable and can cause
severe burns and other injuries.
- Failure to shut the engine off while refu­
eling and/or to insert the pump nozzle
fully into the fuel filler neck could cause
fuel to spray out of filler neck or to over­
flow. Fuel spray and overflow ing fuel can
c ause a fi re.
- Never use a cellular telephone wh ile re­
fueling. The electromagnetic radiation
can cause sparks that can ign ite fue l va­
pors and cause a fire.
- Never get back into you r vehicle while re­
fueling. If in exceptiona l circumstances
yo u must get back in your vehicle whi le
refue ling, make certain that you close
the door and touch metal to discharge
static electricity before touching the fill­
er nozzle again. Static electricity can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors
released during refueling.
- Never smoke or have an open flame any­
where in or near your vehicle when refu ­
eling or filling a portable fuel container .
- For your safety, we strongly recommend
that you do not travel w ith a portable fuel container in your vehicle. The con­
tainer, full or empty may leak and could
cause a fire, especially in a crash.
- If, under exceptional circumstances, you
must transport a portable fuel container,
please observe the following:
- Never fill a portable fuel container
whi le it is anywhere in or on the vehicle
(for example, in the luggage compa rt­
ment, or on the trunk) . Static electrici­
ty can build up while filling and can ig­
nite fuel vapors causing a fire.
- Always place a portab le fue l container
on the ground before fi lling.
- Always keep the filler nozzle complete­
ly inside the portab le container before
and during filling.
- If filling a portab le container made of
metal, the f iller nozzle must always be
in contact with the container. This will
help prevent static electricity from d is­
c harging and cause a fire.
- Never spill fuel inside the vehicle or
luggage compartment. Fuel vapors are
highly flammable .
- Always observe local and state/provin­
cial laws regarding the use, storage
and transportation of fuel containers .
- Make certain the fuel container meets
industry standards (ANSI/ ASTM
F852 -86) .
(D Note
If any fuel has spilled onto the car, it
should be removed immediately to prevent
damage to the paint .
@) For the sake of the environment
As soon as the correctly operated no zzle
switches off automatically for the first
time, the tank is full. Do not try to add
more fuel because fuel may spill out . In
addition, the expansion space in the fuel
tank will be filled -causing the fuel to
overflow when it becomes warm and pol­
l ute the environment .

(D Tips
-Running yo ur engine while refuelling
may cause vapors to escape or even
cause fue l to spill out of the tank. This
would then shut off the fuel nozzle be­
fore the tank is full.
- Do not refuel your veh icle w ith the igni­
tion switched on . The fuel gauge may
otherwise not indicate the correct fuel
level afte r refuelling.
- Diesel veh icles * are equipped w ith a die­
se l m isf ueling protector. It allows the
vehicle to be f ueled on ly w ith a diesel
fuel pump nozzle . A wo rn o r damaged
no zzle or a nozz le tha t is too small may
no t be able to open the d iesel misfueling
protector. If this is the case, try turning
the nozz le before inserting it in the fue l
filler neck, use a different fuel p ump or
see your authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized repa ir facility for assistance.
- The fuel filler flap of your vehicle is not locked when you lock the vehicle from
the i nside.
Fuel filler flap emergency release
You con open the fuel filler flop by hand if the
power locking system should fail.

Selective catalytic
reduction
General information
App lies to vehicles: wit h diesel engine
On vehicles with se lective cata lytic reduct ion,
an urea solution (AdB lue) is injected into the
exhaust system before a nitrogen ox ide cata­
lytic co nve rter to reduce nitrogen emissions. ..,

This message appears if the system detects it
was filled incorrectly. Drive immediate ly to
the nearest qualified workshop to have the malfunct ion repaired. Otherwise you will not
be able to start the engine aga in once you
stop it.
Filling AdBlue
Ap plies to vehicles: with diesel e ng in e
A special refill bottle must be used to fill the
AdBlue.

The Ad Blue f iller tube is located near the die­
se l filler t ube. A lways add 1.5 gallons (5 .7 lit­
ers) of AdBlue (three bottles). This is the m ini­
mum amount required to ensure the system
detects the refilling and to start the eng ine.
The Ad Blue tank capacity is approximately
4.5 gal lons ( 17 lite rs).

instrument clus ter, switch the ig nition on
for about 15 se con ds befo re st art ing the e n­
gine .
WARNING
Ad B lue can irritate the sk in, eyes an d res­
p iratory system. If there is contact with
the fluid, flush immediately with plenty of
water. Co nsu lt a phys ician if necessary.
(D Note
- On ly use Ad B lue that conforms to the
standard ISO 22241-1. Do not mix any
add itives w ith the AdBl ue a nd do not d i­
lute it with water.
- Do not add Ad Bl ue to the diese l tank or
add diese l fuel to the Ad B lue tank. Mix­
ing can lead to damage to the engine
and the AdBl ue tank system. The Lim ited

- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open flames . Fluids in the engine com­
partment could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher im­
mediately available.
- To avoid electrical shock and persona l in ­
jury while the engine is running or being started, never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repa ir
with the engine running:
- Fi rst, fully apply the parking bra ke,
move se lec to r lever to P (Pa rk) .
- Always use extreme caution to preven t
clot hing, jewe lry, or long h air from ge t­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V -belts
or other moving parts, or from contact­ ing hot parts. Tie back hair before
start ing, and do not wear cloth ing that
will hang or droop into the eng ine.

Closing the engine hood

Do not try to push it shut; it may fail to en­

A WARNING

A hood that is not completely latched
could fly up and b lock your view while dr iv­
ing.
- When you close the engine hood, check it
to make sure the safety catch has p roper­
ly engaged. The hood sho uld be flush
with the surrou nding vehicle body pa rts.
- If you notice while driv ing t hat the hood
is not s ecured prope rly, stop at onc e and
close it.
