Changing a wheel
Before changing a wheel
Observe the following precautions for your
own and your passenger's safety when chang­
ing a wheel .

You or your passengers cou ld be injured
while changing a whee l if yo u do not fol­
low t hese safety precautions:
- If you have a flat t ire, move a safe dis ­
tance off the road. Tur n off the eng ine,
turn the emergency f lashers on and use
other warning dev ices to alert other mo­
torists.
- Make sure that passengers wait in a safe
place away from the ve hicle and well
away from the road and traff ic.
- To help p revent the vehicle from moving
s u dden ly and possibly slipping off the
jack, always fully set the parking brake
and block the wheel diagonally opposite
the wheel being changed. Whe n one
front wheel is lifted off the ground, plac­ ing the A utomat ic Transm iss ion in P
(Pa rk) will
not p revent the vehicle from
moving.
- Before you change a wheel, be su re the
ground is level and fi rm. If ne cessa ry,
use a st urdy board under the jack.

Changing a wheel
When you change a wheel , follow these­
quence described below s tep-by-s tep and in
exactly that order .
l. Activate the vehicle jack mode*

Loosening and tightening the wheel
bolt s
The wheel bolts must be loosened before rais­
ing the vehicle.

A WARNING
- Do not use force or hurry when changing
a whee l -you can cause the vehicle to s lip
off the jack and cause serious personal
injuries.
- Do not loosen the wheel bolts more than
one turn
before you raise the vehicle with
the jack. -You risk an injury.
(D Tips
-Never use the hexagonal socket in the
handle of the screwdriver to loosen or
tighten the wheel bolts.
-If a wheel bolt is very tight, you may find
it easier to loos en by carefully pushing
down on the end of the wheel bolt

Raising the vehicle
The vehicle must be lifted with the jack first
before the wheel can be removed.

Taking the wheel off/installing the spare
Follow these instructions step-by-step for
changing the wheel.

After you have loosened a ll wheel bolts and
ra ised the veh icle off the ground, remove and
replace the wheel as follows:

handle to screw in and tighten all wheel
bolts
slightly.
.. Remove the alignment pin and insert and
tighten the remaining wheel bolt slightly like the rest.
.. Turn the jack handle counter-clockwise to
lower the veh icle until the jack is fully re­
leased .

wheel bo lts f irm ly

proximately) opposite one, to keep the
wheel centered.
(D Note
When removing or installing the whee l,
the rim could hit the brake rotor and dam­
age the rotor. Work carefu lly and have a
second person help you.
@ Tips
Neve r use the hexagonal socket in the han ­
dle of the screwdriver to loosen or tighten
the w heel bo lts.
- Pull the reversible blade from the screw­
dr iver before you use the hexagonal
socket in the hand le to turn the wheel
bolts.
- When mount ing tires w ith
unidi rectional
tread design
make sure the tread pat­
tern is po inted the right way
~page 280.
-The wheel bo lts shou ld be clean and easy
to turn. Check for dirt and corrosion on
the mating surfaces of both the wheel
and the hub. Remove all d irt from these
surfaces before remounting the whee l.

moving parts in the eng ine compart­
ment .

compartment, always read and heed all

- Always connect POSITIVE( +) to POSI­
TIVE(+), and NEGATIVE(-) to NEGATIVE
( - ) gro und post of the battery manager
control unit .
- Check that all screw plugs on the battery
cells a re screwed in firmly . If not, tighten
pl ugs p rior to connecting clamp on nega ­
tive battery term inal.
- Please note that the procedure f or con­
nect ing a jump er cable as desc ribed
above appl ies spec ifically to the case of
you r vehi cle be ing jump started. When
you are giv ing a jump star t to an othe r ve­

not connec t the negat ive (-) ca­

with commercial tow truck
General hints
Your Audi requires special handling for tow ­
tng.
The follow ing information is to be used by
commercia l tow tr uck operators who know
h ow to ope rate thei r equipme nt safe ly.
Emergenc y situ ation s 287
-Ne ver tow your Audi. Towing will cau se
damage to the engine and tran smission.
- Never wrap the safety chain s or w inch ca­
ble s around the brake lines.
- To prevent unnece ssary damage , your Audi
must be transported with a flat bed tru ck.
- To load the vehicle on to the fl at bed , use
the towing loop found in the vehicle tools
a nd attach to the front or rear anchor age
¢ pag e 287 and ¢ page 288 .
_& WARNING
A vehicle being towed is not safe for pas ­
sengers. Never allow anyo ne to ride in a
vehicle be ing towed, for any reason.
Front towing loop
Only install the front towing loop when it is
needed.

-Be awa re of the follow ing points befo re
li fting the vehicle:
- The vehicle should never be lifted or
jacked up from underneath the engine oil pan, the transmission housing, the
front or rear axle or the body side
membe rs. This could lead to ser ious
damage.
- To avoid damage to the underbody or
chassis frame , a rubber pad must be
i nserted between the floor jack and
the l ift points.
- Before driving over a workshop hoist,
check that the veh icle weight does not
exceed the permissible lifting capacity
of the hoist .
- Before driving over a workshop hoist,
ensure that there is sufficient clear­
ance between the hoist and low parts
of the vehicle.

ance w ith the maintenance sched ule may be a
condition for upholding a poss ible war ranty
claim made within the warranty period.
Above all, operational safety can be adversely
affected, crea ting unnecessary risks for you
and your passengers.
If in doubt about any servicing, have it done
by your authori zed Audi dealer or any other
properly equipped and q ualified workshop .

Never reach into the area around or
touch the rad iator fan. It is temperature
contro lled and can switch on suddenly -
even when the engine is
off . The radiator
fan switches on automat ica lly when the
coo lant reaches a certai n tempe rature
and will cont inue to run until the coo lan t
temper ature drops.
- Always sw itch
off the ignition before any­
one gets under the vehicle.
- Always support your veh icle with safety
stands if it is necessary to work under­
neath the vehicle . The j ack s upplied with
the vehicle is not adequate for this pur­
pose and cou ld collapse causing serio us
personal i njury .
- I f you must work unde rneath the vehicle
with the wheels on t he g round , a lways
make sure the vehicle is on leve l ground,
that the wheels are a lways securely
blocked and that the engine cannot be
started.
