Opening and closing
Emergency unlocking of the ignition key
In the event of malfunctions in the electrical sys­
tem, it may happen that you cannot remove the
ignition key.

If the vehicle is unlocked and no door, the rear lid
or the hood is opened w ith in 60 seconds, the ve­
hicle locks itself again automatically . This feature
prevents the vehicle from being accidenta lly left
un locked over a long per iod of time .

On vehicles with automatic transmission, these­
lector lever must be in the P pos ition, otherwise
the vehicle cannot be locked .

- In order to make sure the locking function is
work ing, you should always keep your eye
on the vehicle to make sure it is properly
locked .
- Do not use the remote control if you are in­
side the car, otherwise you may unintention­
ally lock the vehicle, and then you would set
off the anti-theft alarm when you try to
start the engine or open a door. In case this
happens anyhow, push the unlock button@.
- Use the pan ic function on ly if you are in an
emergency situation.

Locking and unlocking with convenience

The doors and the rear lid can be unlocked and
locked without operating the master key .

Tone when locking -if you select On, a tone w ill

the speed reaches 9 mph (15 km/h) .

If the cent ral lock ing system malfunct ions, you
must un lock/Lock the doo rs separately using the
emergency key or the mechanical key .

Locking the front passenger's door with the
mechanical key
The emergency lock is located on the rear side o f
the fro nt passenger 's door. It is only visible when
the door is open .

Switching the ignition on /off
If you wou ld like to switch the ignition on with­
out starting the engine, fo llow these steps:
~ Inse rt the key into the igni tion lock.
~ Press the key brief ly without p ress ing t he
clutch peda l (f or manua l transm iss ions) or the
brake pedal (for a utomatic transmissions).
~ To switch the ignition off, press the key again.
When star ting the engine, m ajor electr ic al loads
a re switched off temporar ily .
You can on ly remove the key w ith the ignition
switched off.
If the engine should not start immediately, the
start ing p rocess is a utomat ica lly stopped after a
short time. Repeat sta rting procedure.

- Never allow the engine t o ru n in confine d
spa ces -dange r of asp hyxi ation.
- N ever remove the ign ition key from the ign i­
t io n loo k while the vehicle is moving . Ot her­
wise, the stee ring lock cou ld suddenly en­
gage and you would not be able to steer t he
vehicle.
- Always ta ke t he key with yo u wheneve r you
leave your vehicle . Otherwise, the engine
cou ld be started or elect rical equipment
such as the power windows co uld be operat­
ed. This can lead to ser ious injury.
- Never leave ch ildren or persons requiring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doo rs ca n be locked using the remote trans­
mitter, preventi ng people from escap ing
from the vehicle o n their own in the event of
an eme rgency . Dependi ng on the t im e of
year, people inside the vehicle ca n be ex­
posed to very h igh o r ve ry low tempe ra­
t ur es .

Avoid high eng ine rpm, f ull th rottle and heavy
engine loads unti l the engine has reached op­
erating temperature -otherwise you r isk en ­
gine damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run w hile pa rked to
warm up. Begin dr iving immediately. T his re­
duces unnecessary em iss ions.

- If the key cannot be removed from the ign i­
tion lock, you have to pull the mechan ica l
key out of the master key in order to be able

-After starting a cold engine, there may be a
br ief per iod of increased noise because the
oil pressure must first build up in the hy­
draulic valve adjus te rs. This is no rma l and
not a cause fo r concern .
- If you leave the veh icle with the ignition
sw itched on, the ig nitio n w ill switch off af­
ter a ce rtai n period of time. Please note that
elec trical eq uipment such as e xterior light s
w ill swi tch off as well when tha t happens.

If the engine has been under heavy load for
an extended period, heat builds up in the en­
gine compartment after the engine is switch­
ed off -there is a risk of damaging the engine .
Allow the engine to run at idle for about two
minutes before switching it off.
Convenience key
Starting the engine
Applies to vehicles: with conve nien ce key
The I STAR T ENGINE ST OP I button switches the
ignition on and starts the engine.

• Manual transmission: Fully depress the clutch
pedal and move the shift lever to the neutral
position.
• Automatic transmission: Step on the brake
pedal and move the selector lever to P or N

Switching the ignition on/off
If you would like to switch the ignition on with­
out starting the engine, follow these steps:
• Press the
!START E NGINE STOPI button with­
out pressing the clutch pedal (for manual
transmissions) or the brake pedal (for automat­
ic transmissions) .
• To switch the ignition off, press the button
again.
Driving
If the engine should not start immediately, the
starting process is automatically stopped after a
short time. Repeat starting procedure.
When starting the engine, major elect rical loads
are switched off temporarily .
After a cold engine is started, there may be a
brief period of increased noise because oil pres­
sure must fi rst bui ld up in the hydraulic valve ad­
justers. This is normal and not a cause for con ­
cern.

has come to a complete stop.
- Always take the key with you whenever you
leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the engine

sistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote trans­
mitter, preventing people from escaping
from the vehicle on the ir own in the event of

year, people inside the vehicle can be ex­
posed to very high or very low tempera­
tures.

A WARNING
- When you leave your veh icle -even if only
br iefly -always remove the ignition key . This
applies part icu larly when children remain in
t h e ve hicl e. Otherwise the childre n could
s tar t the engine, release the p arking br ake
or opera te e lectr ica l equi pment (e.g . power
win dows) . There is the ris k of an acci den t.
- When the vehicle is lo cked, no one -particu­
larly not children should rema in in the vehi ­
cl e. Locked doors make it more difficult for
emergency wor kers to get into the vehicle -
putt ing lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .

.. When you sta rt to drive as usual, the parking
bra ke is automatically released and yo ur vehicle
beg ins to move.
When stop ping at a traffic signal or stopping in
c ity t raffic on vehicles with an a utomat ic t rans ­
mission, the parking brake can be app lied. The
vehicle does not have to be he ld with the foot­
brake. The pa rking brake eliminates the tendency
to c reep with a d rive ra nge engaged. As soon as
yo u drive off as usua l, the park ing b rake is re­
l eased a utomat ica lly and the vehi cle starts to
m ove .
Starting on slopes
When sta rting on inclines, the starting assist pre ­
ven ts the vehicle from unintentionally ro lling
bac k. The braking force of the parking b rake is
n ot released until suff icient dr iving force has
been built up at the wheels.

For safety reasons, the pa rking bra ke is re­
l eased a utoma tically on ly w hen t he d river's
s a fety be lt is en gaged in t he b uckle.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unin tentionally on an in­
cline, do the f ollowing:

and dep ress the accelera to r. T he pa rking brake
s t ays app lied and p revents the veh icle from
roll ing ba ckw ard .
.. Yo u can re lease the swi tch @ once you are s ure
that you are deve loping enough d riving force at
the whee ls by depressing the accelerato r.
Depend ing on the weight of the rig (vehi cle an d
t ra ile r) and the seve rity of the incline, yo u may
r o ll backwards as yo u start. You can p revent roll­
i ng backwards by holding the parking brake
switch @pulled o ut and acce lerating -just as
you would when starting on a hill wi th a conven­
tiona l hand b rake .

-For reas ons of safety, cruise contro l should
not be used in the city, in stop-and-go traf­
fic, on twisting roads and when road condi­
t ions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel,
heavy rain and hydrop laning) -risk of acci­
dent .
- Turn off the cruise control temporari ly when
enter ing turn lanes, highway exit lanes or in
construction zones.
- Please note that inadvertent ly "rest ing"
yo ur foot on the accelerator peda l causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is be­
c a use the cruise co ntro l is ove rri dden by the
dr iver's acceleration .
-If a brake system malfunc tion such as ove r­
he ating occu rs when the c ruise control sys­
tem is switche d on, the braking func tion in
the system may be switche d off . The other
c ruise control functions remain active as
long as the indicator light

- Vehicles with manua l t ransmission: You can
attain the set speed only if the gear t hat is
currently engaged will allow it, or if it does
not tax t he engine and allows it to run
smooth ly. Therefore shift i nto a higher or
l ower gear in a time ly ma nner.
- The brake lights illuminate as soon as the
brakes app ly automatically .

You c an a lso press the acceler ator peda l down to
increase your spee d, e .g . if you want to pass
someone . The speed you saved ea rlier will re ­
sume as soo n as yo u let off of the accelerator
pedal.
~ If , however, yo u exceed your saved speed by 1.1'1
~ 6 mph (1 0 km/h) for longe r than 5 mi nutes, the

saved speed rema ins the same .
Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the vehi­
cle is not moving.
