If the switch is in the center position, the interior
lighting is controlled automatically.
@ Front /rear reading lights
To turn a reading light on/off, press the button
~ c> fig. 40 or c> fig. 41.
The appearance and location of the rear reading
lights may differ depending on the model.
Lights and Vision
Instrument illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for the
instruments, the center console and the display
can be adjusted .

• Press the knob to re lease it .
.. Turn the knob toward"-" or "+" to reduce or in­
crease the brightness.
• Press the knob again to return it to its original
position .
@ Tips
The instrument illumination (for dials and
needles) lights on when the ignition is switch­
ed on and the vehicle lights are turned off. As
the daylight fades, the illum ination of the di­
als likewise dims automatically and will go
out completely when the outside light is very
low. This feature is meant to remind you to
switch on the headlights when outside light
conditions become poor.

also store and access the exterior mirror adjust­
ment settings* using the remote control key or
memory button.

Switching the memory function on /off
• Press the ION/O FF I button to switch the memo­
ry function on/off . The word
OFF lights up when
the memory function is switched off. Seat p ro·
files are nei ther stored no r r eca lled.
Seats and storage
Storing a seat profile
• Press the ISET I button. Whe n the word SET
lights up, the memory is ready to store set ­
tings.
• Press a memory button

confirms that the settings were stored.
Accessing a seat profile
• If the driver's door is open and the ignition is
sw itched off, press the memory button .
• If the driver's door is closed or the ignition is
switched on, press and hold the memory but­
ton unti l the seat adjustment is complete.
A WARNING
- For safety reasons, the seat setting can o nly
be recalled when the veh icle is stationary·
otherwise you risk hav ing an accident.
- In an emergency the recall procedure can be
cancelled by pressing the
I O N/OF F! switch o r
by tappi ng the memory buttons.

gine speed may set the veh icle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try to
hold the vehicle in place by pressing the ac­
ce lerator pedal while a driving gear is se ­
lected. This can cause the transmission to
overheat and can damage it . Activate the
parking brake or press the brake pedal to
prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when the engine
i s stopped and the selector lever is in
N w ill
damage the transm ission because it is not
lubr icated under those circumstances.
@ Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Hill descent control

The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down declines.
Hill descent control is activated when the selec­
tor lever is in D/S and you press the brake pedal.
The transmission automatica lly selects a gear
that is suitable for the incline. Hill descent con­
trol tries to maintain the speed achieved at the
tim e of braking, within physical and technical
limitations. It may still be necessary to adjust the
speed with the brakes.
Hill descent control switches off once the decline
levels out or you press the acce lerator pedal.
On veh icles w ith the cruise control system*
¢ page 80, hill descent control is also act ivated
when the speed is set.
& WARNING
Hi ll descent control cannot overcome physical
limitations, so it may not be ab le to maintain
a constant speed under all conditions. Always
be ready to apply the brakes.

Other things that can affect Advanced
Airbag performance
Changing the vehicle's suspension system can
change the way that the Advanced A irbag System
performs in a crash. For example, using t ire-rim
comb inat ions not approved by Audi, lowering the
vehicle, chang ing the stiffness of the s uspension,
including the springs, suspension struts, shock
absorbers etc . can change the forces that are
measured by the airbag sensors and sent to the
e lectronic control un it. Some suspension changes
can, for example, increase the force levels meas­
ured by the sensors and make the airbag system
deploy in crashes in which it wou ld not deploy if
the changes had not been made . Other kinds of
changes may reduce the force levels measured by
the sensors and prevent the airbag from deploy­ ing when it should.
A WARNING
Changing the vehicle 's s uspension including
use of unapproved tire-rim combinations can
change Advanced Airbag performance and in ­
crease the risk of ser ious personal injury in a
crash.
- Never install suspens ion components that
do not have the same performance charac­
teristics as the components or iginally instal­
led on your veh icle.
- Never use tire-rim combinations that have
not been approved by Audi.
Ai rb ag system
A WARNING
-Items stored between the safety be lt buckle
and the center console can cause the sensors i n the buckle to send the w rong informat ion
to the electronic control module and prevent
the Advanced A irbag System from wor king
properly.
- Always ma ke sure that nothing can interfere
wit h the safety belt buckles a nd that they
are not obstr ucted.
Knee airbags
Description of knee airbags

The knee airbag system can provide supplemen­
tal protection to properly restrained front seat
occupants.
