- When swit ching the ignition o n, the need les
i n the instrument clus ter swi ng upward
b rief ly .
- The ill umination for the inst rument cluste r
li ghts up whenever you switch on the igni­
tion with the
vehicle headlights off . As the
day light fades, the instrument cluster illu­
mination likewise d ims automatically and
will go out completely whe n the o utside
li ght is very low. This feature is meant to re­
mind you to swi tch on the headlights when
outside light con ditions become poor.

Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge ¢ page 10, fig. 3 CD
only works when t he ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the follow­
ing important points :
Engine cold
If the needle is at or close to the bottom o f the
gauge, the engine has not yet reached its operat ­
i ng temperature. Avo id h igh engine speeds,
heavy engine loads, and heavy thrott le applica­
tions .
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating tem­
perature, the needle will move to the middle of
the ga uge and rema in there. I f the engine is
working hard at hig h outs ide temperatures, t he
needle may move higher on the gauge. This is not
a cause for concern as long as the. warning
li ght i n the inst rumen t cluste r display does no t il­
l u m inat e. If the . warning lig ht in the inst ru­
ment cluster d isp lay flashes, th is can me an one
of two th ings : ei th er the coolan t
temperature is
too h igh, or t he coo lant
level is too low

A WARNING
-Always observe the warning in¢ page 195,
before open ing the hood and check ing the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
cou ld burn yourself. Let the eng ine cool off
first so that you cannot hear o r see any
steam o r engine coo lant.
0 Note
- Mount ing additional lights or accesso ries in
fron t of the a ir inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radia to r. A t high outside temper­
atu res or high e ngine load, the eng ine could
overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the veh i­
cle is moving. If the spo iler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­ ized Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo­
lutions per minutes).
If engine RPM drops be low 1,5 00, you should
downshift to the next lower gea r. T he red area at
the end of the scale indicates max imum permis­
sible eng ine RPM after the break-in period . Be­
fore reachi ng this area, move the selector lever to
position D/S or ease your foot off the accelerator
pedal.

The tachometer needle@¢ page 10, fig. 3
should o nly briefly be in the red zone: you
co uld damage your eng ine! The beginn ing of
the r ed zone varies depending on the engine.

Upshift ing early saves fuel and reduces eng ine

The lsET j button performs the following func­
t ions:
Switching on t ime, date , temperature
display and odometer
The display appears for approximate ly 30 sec·
onds when you press the
! SE T! button c;, fig . 4
with the igni tion off .
Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system constantly monitors cer­
tain individual functions and components of the
vehicle when the ignition is turned on and when
the vehicle is moving .
With the ign ition turned on, you can start the
"Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the
I SE TI but­
ton. You can perform an Auto-Check sequence
when the vehicle is sta tionary and the ign it ion is
tu rned on o r whe n th e vehicle is moving slowe r
t h an 3 mph (5 km/ h).
In add ition , the number of keys init ia lised for
your vehicle is disp layed .
L2 3/3 means that
th ree keys have be en initialised. This feature ena­
bles used car buye rs to make sure they have r e­
c e ived all of the keys.
If you are g iven only two keys, for instance, you
should take the vehicle and the existing keys to
an a utho rized Aud i dea le r to have the miss ing key
disabled.
It i s also important to no tify your insur­
ance company abo ut the loss.
Setting the sp eed warning
By pressi ng the !SET ! button briefly, you can set
th reshold 1 of the speed wa rn ing while you are
dr iv ing ¢page 80. By ma intai ning pressure on

the I SET! button, you delete the warning thresh­
old.

Depending on the vehicle equipment level, you
may choose between the quartz clock or the GPS
controlled clock*~ in the radio or in the MMI*.
You can learn more about this in the MMI manual
or in the radio user's manual.
Odometer/trip odometer
The display of distance driven is shown in kilome­
ters "km" or in miles "mi".
- USA models -Miles
- Canada models - Kilometers
The units of measure (kilometers/miles) can be changed in the radio or MMI* . You can learn more
about this in the MMI manual or in the radio us­
er's manual.
The odometer @ shows the total number of kilo ­
meters or miles that have been driven on the ve­
hicle .

The trip odometer @ shows the distance driven
since it was last reset.
It can be used to measure
short distances. The last digit shows distances of
100 meters or 1/10 of a mile .
The trip odometer can be reset to zero by press­
ing the reset button

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the in­
strument cluster,
DEF will appear in the tripod­
ometer and will stay on. Contact your authorized
Audi dealer to have the problem corrected.
Immobilizer
When the ignition is switched on, the data on the
ignition key are scanned automatically.
If an unauthorized key was used,
SAFE is dis­
played permanently in the odometer display
field . The vehicle cannot be operated
¢page 30.
{i) Tips
-When you switch off the ignition or open
the driver door, the time, date, odometer
and temperature are displayed for an addi­
tional
30 seconds.
- You can also call up the display with the
!SET ! button¢ page 11 while the ignition is
switched off.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is on.
When the needle reaches the red area, the warn­
ing
lightliD in the instrument cluster will illumi­
nate¢
page 20. Time to refuel!
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed in
¢page 246.
(D Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An irregu­
lar supply of fuel can cause engine misfiring
and fuel could enter into the exhaust system.
The catalytic converter could then overheat
and be damaged.

~- Steering column lock
• Steering defecti ve! Do not dri ve vehicle!
If the indicator light t urns on and the message
appears, the re is an electronic st eering column
lock malf unction . You cannot switch th e ignition
on.
Do
not tow your vehicle because it cannot be
st eered . Seek professional assistance.

If t he indicator light turns on and the message
appears, the re is an elect ron ic steer ing column
lock malfunct ion.
Drive to your au th ori zed Aud i dea ler immediately
to have the malfunction corrected .
A WARNING
Your vehicle must not be towed in the event
of a malfunct ion in the elect ron ic steer ing col­
um n lock because i t ca nn ot be stee red due to
t he locke d steering.
If it i s towed w ith the
steering locked, there is the risk of an acci ­
dent .

If the b1 ind icator light blinks while driving , the
E SC or ASR (A nti-Slip Regulat ion) is actively regu­
l ati ng .
If the
b1 ind icator light turns on, the system has
swit ched the ESC off . In this case, yo u can switch
t h e ign ition off and t hen on to sw itch the ESC on
again. The indica tor ligh t turns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fu lly.
If the . indicator light tu rns on, ESC was re­
stri cted or sw itched off using the

If the indicato r light BJ and the ABS indicator

turn o n and the message appears, the ABS or
e lectronic differe ntia l lock is malfunc tioning. This
also ca us es the ESC to mal func tion. The br akes
sti ll fu nct ion with thei r no rma l powe r, b ut ABS is
not active.

A WARNING
If th e 11111 (USA models) JII (Canada mod­
e ls) brake syste m indic ator ligh t turn s on to ­
gether with the ABS and ESC ind icator lights,
the ABS/ESC regulat ing f unction may have
failed. Functions that stabilize the vehicle a re
no longer availab le. This could cause the vehi­
cle to swerve and increase the risk of sliding. Drive carefully t o the nea rest authorized Audi
dealer and have the malfunction cor rected.

ABS/(@) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differ ential lock (EDL) .
The warning/indicator light fJ]l (USA models)/
ti] (Ca nada models) w ill come on for a few sec­
onds when the ig nition is switched on. The light
w ill go out afte r an automatic check sequence is
comp leted.
The re is a malfunction in the ABS when :
-The warning/indicator lig ht does not illuminate
when you switch the ig nition on .
- The warning/indicator lig ht does not go out af­
ter a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator lig ht ill uminates wh ile
driv ing .
The ESC indicator light a lso ill uminates if the re is
a ma lf u nction in the ABS . The message
Stabiliza­
tion cont rol (ESC ): Fault! See owner 's manual
also appears in the instrument cluste r display
and a warning tone sounds.
The brake system will still respond even with­
out the assistance of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as poss ible to re­
store full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the b rake wa rning light ¢ page 15 and the ABS
warn ing illuminate
together there may be a mal­
function in the ABS, and there may also be a ma l­
function in the brake system itself ¢ ,& .
The ABS
will not work and you will notice a change in braking respons e and performance.
In the event of a malfunct ion in the b rake sys­

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The ED L works toget her with the ABS . The ABS
war ning light w ill come on if there is a malfunc­
tion in the EDL system

A WARNING
- If the fJ]l (USA mode ls)/ tl] (Canada mod­
els) war ning light does not go out, o r if it
comes on while dr iv ing, the ABS syst em is
not working prope rly . The vehi cle can t hen
be s topped o nly with the s tandard bra kes
(without A BS) . Yo u will no t have the pro tec­
tion A BS provides. Contac t your a uthorized
Aud i dea le r as soon as possible.
- USA models: If the 1111 warning light and
the
fJ]l warn ing ligh t come on togethe r, the
rea r whee ls co uld loc k up first under hard
brak ing. Rear whee l lock-up can ca use loss
of vehicle control and an accident. Have your
veh icle repa ired immediately by your au­
thorized A udi dealer or qualified workshop.
Drive s low ly and avoid sudde n, hard bra ke
ap pli cations .
-Canada models : If the brake warning light
• and t he ABS warning light

togeth er, t he rear w heels could lock up fi rst
un der hard bra kin g. Rear wheel lock-up can
c a use loss of vehi cle con tro l a nd a n acci­
dent . Have your veh icle repa ired immediate­
ly by your authorized Audi dea ler or qua li­
f ied wo rkshop . Dr ive s low ly and avoid su d­
den, hard brake app lications.
tli I !i: Safety systems
The fl (USA models) ;fll (Canada models) indi­
cator lig ht monitors the safety systems (e.g. a ir­
bags, pretensioners) and illuminates fo r a few
seco nds each t ime you swi tc h the ignition on .
-
If the II (USA models)/E,I (Canada mode ls) in­
dicator light does not go out, or if it ill uminates
wh ile you a re d riving, or if it starts to blink, then
t h ere is a ma lf u nction somewhere in the system.
If th e light does not illum inate when you sw itch
t h e igni tion on, t his a lso means there is a ma l­
f unc tion.
A WARNING ~
If yo u have a ma lfun ction in t he safety sys-
tems, contact you r authorized Audi dea le r i m­
mediately. Otherwise the safety systems may
not wor k properly in an accident.

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator ligh t monitors the elec­
tronic power control .

Control) illum inates when yo u sw itch the ignition
on as a function check.

If this wa rning/ind icator light ill uminates
while you are dr iv ing, then the re is a malfunc­
tion in the eng ine electronics. Have the mal­
function corrected as soon as possible by your
author ized A udi dealer or a qualified re pair fa ­
cility.
0 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
T he Malfunc tion Ind ica tor Lamp (M IL) is part o f
the On-Board Diagnos tic (O BD II ) system . The
symbo l
('4 lights up when the ignition is switch ­
e d on and wi ll turn off afte r the engine has start ­
e d an d has sett le d at a constant i dle speed . This
indicates that the MIL is working p roperly.

engine spee d is limited to the speed displayed in

the engine speed w ill not exceed the value dis­
played in the driver information system, for ex­
amp le w hen downshifting .

If the symbol illuminates, contact yo ur autho r­
i zed Audi dealer and have the oil sensor inspect ­

Sport differential: Overheating
The transmission tempe ratu re has increased sig­
n ifican tly due to the sporty dr iv ing manner. D rive
in a less sporty manner unti l the temperature re­
turns to the normal range and the indicato r light
switches of.
A WARNING
Contact yo ur authorized Aud i dealer or quali­
fied workshop if the sport differential is faulty
or ma lfunctioning. The repa ir must be per­
formed by trained personnel using the co rrect
oil in orde r to ensure safety .

There is a malfunct ion in the electron ic ignition
lock . Please go to an authorized Audi dealer or
other qualified workshop to have the malfunction repair ed .

Wheneve r you use the left B o r the right Ill
turn s ignal, t he indica to r li ght blinks. When you
u se the emergency flashers, bot h indicator lights
flash.
If one of the tu rn signa l ligh t bulbs bu rn out, the
turn s ign al will b link t wice as fast as normal.
Carefully drive to your author ized Audi dealer im­
mediate ly to have the malfunction corrected .
