Automatic transmission
This prevents too much stress from being placed
on the locking mechanism.
Vehicles with multitronic transmission: Your vehi­
cle is equipped with
hill hold assist allowing you
to start while on an incline. The system is activat­
ed when the brake pedal is pressed down and
held
for a few seconds. The brake pressure will
hold for
a momen t after the brake pedal loosens
t o preven t the vehicle from rolling backwards
while starting up .
A WARNING
- The vehicle can also roll when the engine is
stopped .
- Unintended vehicle movement can cause se­ rious injury .
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear.
If you must leave your
vehicle when the engine is running, activate
the parking brake and move the selector lev­
er to
P.
-Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To pre­
vent the vehicle from "creeping", you must
keep your foot on the brake when the engine
is running and the selector lever is in 0/5 or
R or "tiptronic" mode is selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when changing the selector lever position while
the vehicle is stationary and the engine is
running .
- Never shift into R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, reduce
your speed and shift into a lower gear with
"tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases brak­
ing distance or causes complete failure of
the brake system .
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it in
place with the brake pedal or parking brake.
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automati-

cally when it becomes too hot from the

when the clutch is overloaded.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood . Make sure these­
lector lever has securely engaged and is
locked in P with the parking brake set
¢ page 195. Otherwise, any increase in en­
gine speed may set the vehicle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied.
(D Note
- 5 tronic- and tiptronic transmission: When
stopping on an incline, do not try to hold
the vehicle in place by pressing the accelera­
tor pedal while a driving gear is selected.
This can cause the transmission to overheat
and can damage it. Activate the parking
brake or press the brake pedal to prevent
the vehicle from rolling.
- 5 tronic- and tiptronic transmission: Allow­
ing the vehicle to roll when the engine is
stopped and the selector lever is in N will
damage the transmission because it is not
lubricated under those circumstances .
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle .
· Hill descent control

The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down declines.
Hill descent control is activated when the selec­
tor lever is in 0/5 and you press the brake pedal.
The transmission automatically selects a gear
that is suitable for the incline. Hill descent con­
trol tries to maintain the speed achieved at the
time of braking, within physical and technical
limitations.
It may still be necessary to adjust the
speed with the brakes. .,.

when the speed is set.
&,_ WARNING
H ill descent control cannot overcome physical
limitations, so it may not be able to maintain
a constant speed under all conditions. Always
be ready to apply the brakes.
Manual shift program

• If you do not press a shift paddle within a short
time while in the 0/5 position, the transmission
will return to automatic mode. To keep shifting using the shift paddles, move the selector lever

The transmission automatically shifts up or down before critical engine speed is reached.
The transmission only allows manual shifting
when the engine speed is within the permitted
range.
@ Tips
- When you shift into the next lower gear, the
transm ission wi ll downshift on ly when there
is no possibility of over-revving the engine.
- When the kick -down comes on, the trans­
mission will shift down to a lower gear, de­
pending on vehicle and engine speeds.
- Tiptronic is inoperative when the transm is­
sion is in the fail-safe mode.
Kick-down
Applies to vehicles: wit h mult itronic/S tro nic/tiptro nic
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration.
Applies to vehicles with a multitronic
transmission
When you depress the accelerator pedal beyond
the resistance point , the transmission downshifts
into a lower gear ratio depending on the vehicle
speed and engine speed. As long as the accelera­
tor pedal is depressed, the engine speed is auto-
matically regulated for maximum acceleration.

Launch Control Program

The Launch Control Program provides the best
acceleration possible when starting from a stop.
Requirement: The engine must be at operating
temperature and the steering wheel must not be
turned.

Introduction

The adaptive cruise control system assists the
d river by regu lating veh icle speed and he lp ing to
maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead,
within the limits of the system. If the system de­
tects a moving vehicle up ahead, adaptive cruise control can brake and then accelerate your vehi ­
cle. This helps to make driving more comfortable
on long highway stretches.
The braking guard system can warn you about an impending collision and initiate brak ing maneu­
vers
c> page 96.
Adapt ive cruise control and braking guard have
technical limitations that you must know, so p lease read this section carefully, understand
how the system works and use them properly at
all times.
General information

The area that contains the radar sensor

other objects or obstructed with dirt, insects,
snow or ice that w ill interfere with the adaptive
cru ise control system and braking guard. Fo r i n­

The function of the adaptive cruise contro l sys­
tem and braking guard is limited under some
cond it ions:
- Objects can on ly be detected when they are
within sensor range
,=;, page 92, fig. 106.
- T he system has a limi ted ability to detect ob­
jects that are a short d istance ahead, off to the
side of your vehicle or moving into your lane.
- Some k inds of veh icles are hard to detect; for
example motorcycles, vehicles with high
ground clearance or overhanging toads may be
detected when it is too late or they may not be
detected at all.
- When driving through curves

- Stationary objects c::> page 91.
& WARNING
-Always pay attention to traffic when adaptive
cruise control is switched on and braking
guard is active. As the driver, you are still re ­
sponsible for starting and for maintaining
speed and distance to other objects. Braking
guard is used to assist you . The driver must
a lways take action to avo id a collis ion. The
driver is always responsible for braking at the
correct t ime.
- I mprope r use of adaptive cru ise con tro l can
cause collisions, o ther accidents and serious
personal injury.
- Never let the comfort and conven ience that
adapt ive cr uise control and brak ing guard
offer distrac t you from the need to be alert
to traffic cond it ions and the need to remain
in fu ll control of your vehicle at all times,
- Always remember that the adaptive cruise
contro l and brak ing guard have limits - they
will not slow the vehicle down or maintain
the set distance when you dr ive towards an
obstacle or something on or near the road
that is not moving, such as vehicles stopped in a traff ic jam, a stalled or disab led vehicle.
If registered by the radar sensor, vehicles or
obstacles that are not moving can trigge r a
co llision warning and if confirmed by the
video camera, a n acute collision warning.

- For safety reasons, do not use adaptive
cruise control when driving on roads with
many curves, when the road surface is in
poor condit ion and/or in bad weather (such
as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydroplan­
ing) . Us ing the system under these condi­
tions co uld resu lt in a collision.
- Switch adaptive cruise control off tempora­
rily when driving in turning lanes, on ex­
pressway exits or in construction zones. This
prevents the vehicle from acce lerating to
the set speed when in these situations.
- T he adapt ive cruise con trol system w ill not
brake by itself if you put your foot on the ac­
celerator pedal. Do ing so can override the
speed and distance regulation.
- When approaching stationary objects such
as stopped traffic, adaptive cruise control
will not respond and braking guard will have
limited function .
- The adaptive cruise control system and brak­
ing guard do not react to people, anima ls,
objects cross ing the road or oncoming ob­
jects.
- The function of the radar sensor can be af­
fected by reflective objects such as guard
rails, the entrance to a tunnel, heavy rain or
ice.
- Never follow a ve hicle so closely that you
cannot stop your vehicle safely. The adap­
t ive cr uise control cannot s low or brake the
vehicle safely when you fo llow another veh i­
cl e too close ly. Always remembe r that the
au tom atic b ra ki ng function cannot bring the
vehicle to a su dden or emergency stop un­
der these conditions.
- T o prevent unin tended operation, always
swit ch ACC
off when i t is not be ing used .

The sensor can be disp laced by impacts o r
damage to the bumper, whee l housing and
underbody. That could affect the adaptive
cru ise cont ro l system and braking guard. Have

vehicle in the next lane and apply the brakes. You

T he adaptive cruise control system only reacts to
objects that are moving or that the system has
already detected as moving. For example, if a ve­
hicle @, which has already been detected by the
adaptive cruise control, turns or changes lanes
and another stationary veh icle @ is located in
front of that ve hicle, the system will not react to

speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), w ill auto­
matica lly accelerate the vehicle to 20 mph
(30 km/h), which is the mi nimum speed
that can be set.

- If you switch the ignit ion or the adaptive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memo ry.
- The electronic stab ilizat ion cont rol (ESC)
and the anti-slip-reg ulat ion (ASR) are a uto­
matically turned on when the adaptive
cruise contro l is turned on. Both systems
cannot be turned off if the adaptive c ruise
control is turned on .

When approach ing a mov ing vehicle up ahead,
the adapt ive cruise control system brakes to
match that object's speed and then mainta ins
the stored distance. If the vehicle ahead acceler­
ates, adaptive cruise contro l will also accelerate
up to the stored speed.
The higher the speed, the greater the distance in

Braking guard uses a radar sensor. It also func­
tions within the limits of the system when adap­
tive cruise control is switched off.
What can Audi braking guard do?
When detected in time, the system can assess
situations when a vehicle ahead brakes suddenly
or if your own vehicle is traveling at a high speed
and approaching a vehicle up ahead that is mov­
ing more slowly . Braking guard does not react if it
cannot detect the situation .
The system advises you of various situations:
- The
distance warning is given if you are too
close to the vehicle ahead for a long time. If the
vehicle ahead brakes sharply, you will not be
able to avoid a collision. The indicator light.
in the display comes on .
- The
approach warning is given when a detected
vehicle up ahead in your lane is moving much
more slowly than you are or if it brakes sharply .
When this warning is given, it may only be pos­
s ib le to avoid a collision by swerving or braking
sharply. The indicator light . and indicato r in
the display will wa rn you about the danger
¢ fig. 113 . You will also hear an acoustic signa l.
If you do not react fast enough or do not react at
all to the situation, Braking guard will intervene
by braking and the message

- If a co llision is imminent, the system wi ll first
provide an
acute warning by br iefly and sharply
app ly in g the brakes.
- If you do not react to the acute warning, brak­
ing guard can brake within the limits of the sys­
tem. This reduces the vehicle speed in the event
of a collision.
- At speeds under 20 mph (30 km/h), the system
can initiate a complete deceleration shortly be­
fore a collisionl l_
-If the braking guard senses that you are not
braking hard enough when a collision is immi­
nent, it can increase the braking force.
Which functions can be controlled?
You can switch braking guard and the distance/
approach warning on or off in the radio or MMI
¢page
97, Settings in the radio/MM!.
A WARNING
Lack of attent ion can cause collisions, other
accidents and ser ious personal injuries. The
braking guard is an assist system and cannot
prevent a coll is ion by itself. The dr iver must
always intervene. The driver is always respon­
sib le for braking at the correct time.
- Always pay close attent ion to traffic, even
when the braking guard is switched on. Be
ready to intervene and be ready to take com­
plete control whenever necessary. Always
keep the safe and legal distance between
your vehicle and vehicles up ahead.
- Braking guard works within limits and will
not respond outside the system limits, for
examp le when approaching a stopped vehi­
cle or stationary obstacle (end of a traffic
jam or vehicle that has broken down in traf­
fic).
- Always remember that the radar sensor for
the braking guard works only w ith in defined
detection and range limits that may prevent
the proper detection of other vehicles.
- The radar sensor's function and range can
be reduced by rain, snow and heavy spray.
Moving vehicles up ahead may not be
-
