Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)

SRS warning lightAs an enhancement to the three-point seat belts, your Volvo is equipped with a Supple-mental Restraint System (SRS). Volvo's SRSconsists of seat belt pretensioners, front air-bags, side impact airbags, the occupantweight sensor, and inflatable curtains. All ofthese systems are monitored by the SRScontrol module. An SRS warning light in theinstrument panel (see the illustration) illumi-nates when the ignition key is turned to posi-tion I, II , or III, and will normally go out after
approximately 7 seconds if no faults aredetected in the system. Where applicable, a text messagewill also be displayed when theSRS warning light illuminates. Ifthis warning symbol is not func-tioning properly, the general
warning symbol illuminates and a text mes-sage will be displayed.
WARNING
• If the SRS warning light stays on after the engine has started or if it illumi-nates while you are driving, have thevehicle inspected by a trained andqualified Volvo service technician assoon as possible.
• Never try to repair any component orpart of the SRS yourself. Any interfer-ence in the system could cause mal-function and serious injury. All work onthese systems should be performed byan authorized Volvo service technician.
WARNING
If your vehicle has been subjected to flood conditions (e.g. soaked carpeting/standingwater on the floor of the vehicle) or if yourvehicle has become flood-damaged in anyway, do not attempt to start the vehicle orput the key in the ignition before discon-necting the battery (see below). This maycause airbag deployment which couldresult in personal injury. Have the vehicletowed to a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician for repairs. Automatic transmission: Before attempting to tow the vehicle, use the following procedure to override theshiftlock system to move the gear selectorto the neutral position:
1. Switch off the ignition for at least
10 minutes and disconnect the bat- tery.
2. Wait at least one minute.
3. Insert the key in the ignition and turn it to position II
4. Press firmly on the brake pedal.
5. Move the gear selector from P (Park)
to the N (Neutral) position.

Gear and driving mode indicator – The currently selected driving mode is dis-played here. If you use the Geartronicfunction on the automatic transmission,the currently selected gear will be dis-played.
Ambient temperature gauge – This dis- play indicates the air temperature outsideyour vehicle. A "snowflake" symbol in thetext window is displayed when the tem-perature is in the range of 23 – 36 °F (–5 –+2 °C). Please note that this symbol doesnot indicate a fault with your vehicle. Atlow speeds or when the vehicle is notmoving, the temperature readings may beslightly higher than the actual ambienttemperature.
Clock/set button – Turn the button to set the clock.
Fuel gauge – see page 288 for fuel tank volume. When the warning light in thegauge comes on, the vehicle should berefueled as soon as possible. The tripcomputer section (see page 76) pro-vides more information on fuel level andconsumption.
Indicator and warning symbols – The indi- cator and warning symbols1
light up when you turn the ignition key to the driving position (position II) before starting.

This shows that the symbols are functioning. When the engine starts, all symbols go out. Ifthe engine is not started within 5 seconds, all symbols except
CHECK ENGINE and
go out. Certain symbols may not have their functions illustrated, depending on the vehi-cle's equipment. The symbol for the parkingbrake goes out when the parking brake isreleased.
Warning/information symbol in center of the instrument panel
This symbol shines as a red or yellow light depending on thenature of the information dis-played.
Red symbol – Stop the vehicle as soon as
possible in a suitable location and read the message shown in the text window. The sym-bol and accompanying text will remain onuntil the fault has been corrected. Yellow symbol – Follow the instructions
shown in the text window. The text can be erased by pressing the READ button (see
page 62), or will disappear automaticallyafter two minutes.
NOTE
When the message TIME FOR REGULAR
SERVICE is displayed, the text can be
erased and the yellow symbol light can be turned off by pressing the READ button.
The text will disappear and the symbollight will go out automatically after twominutes.

Rear fog lightThis light indicates that the fog light is on.
CHECK ENGINE Malfunction indicator light
On-Board Diagnostics II (OBDII): As you drive, a computer called "OBDII" monitorsyour vehicle's engine, transmission, electricaland emission systems. The CHECK ENGINE
light will light up if the computer senses acondition that potentially may need correct-ing. When this happens, please have yourvehicle checked by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician as soon as possible. A CHECK ENGINE light may have many cau-
ses. Sometimes, you may not notice a change in your vehicle's behavior. Even so,an uncorrected condition could hurt fueleconomy, emission cleanliness, and driveabil-ity. Extended driving without correcting thecause could even damage other componentsin your vehicle.
Canadian models are equippedwith this symbol for the Malfunc-tion Indicator Light.
ABS (Anti-lock brake system)If the warning light comes on, there is a malfunction of the ABSsystem (the standard braking sys-tem will still function). The vehicleshould be driven to a trained and
qualified Volvo service technician for inspec-tion. See page 154 for additional information.
DSTC systemThe Dynamic Stability and Trac- tion Control system (DSTC) isexplained in greater detail onpage 158.
Tire pressure monitoring lightSee page 203 for more informa- tion on this function.
Turn signal indicator – trailer (certain models)
If you are towing a trailer, this light will flash simultaneously withthe turn signals on the trailer. Ifthe light does not flash when sig-naling, neither the trailer's turn
signals nor the vehicle's turn signals are func-tioning.

Move the lever forward to start the tailgate washer. After washing the rear window, thewiper will make several additional sweeps.
Tailgate wiper and reverse gearIf the front wipers are on and the transmissionis put into reverse gear, the tailgate wiper will go into intermittent wiping function 1
.
If the tailgate wiper is already in normal wip- ing function, the normal wiping function willcontinue.
Rain sensor*
The rain sensor automatically regulates wiper speed according to the amount of water onthe windshield. The sensitivity of the sensor can be adjusted
by twisting ring (1) up (the wipers will sweep the windshield more frequently) or down (thewipers will sweep the windshield less fre-quently).
Activating the rain sensor:1. Turn the ignition key to at least position I
and put the windshield wiper lever inposition 0.
2. Press button (2), see page 72. > A light in the button will light up to indi-cate that the rain sensor is active.
Deactivating the rain sensor:
• Press button (2), see page 72. or •
Move the windshield wiper lever
down to
another position. Moving the lever up will not deactivate the rain sensor. Doing sowill cause the wipers to sweep the wind-shield until the lever is released, at whichtime the wipers return to rain sensormode.
The rain sensor is also deactivated when the key is removed from the ignition.
CAUTION
The rain sensor should be deactivated when washing the vehicle in an automaticcar wash, etc. If the rain sensor function isleft on, the wipers will start inadvertently inthe car wash and could be damaged.

The HomeLink 1
Wireless Control System pro-
vides a convenient way to replace up to three hand-held radio-frequency (RF) transmittersused to activate devices such as gate opera-tors, garage door openers, entry door locks,security systems, even home lighting. Addi-tional HomeLink information can be found onthe Internet at www.homelink.com or byphoning the hotline at 1–800–355–3515.
WARNING
• If you use HomeLink to open a garage door or gate, be sure no one is nearthe gate or door while it is in motion.
• When programming a garage dooropener, it is advised to park outside ofthe garage.
• Do not use HomeLink with any garagedoor opener that lacks safety stop andreverse features as required by U.S.federal safety standards (this includesany garage door opener model manu-factured before April 1, 1982). Agarage door that cannot detect anobject - signaling the door to stop andreverse - does not meet current U.S.federal safety standards. For moreinformation, contact HomeLink at:www.homelink.com.
Retain the original transmitter of the RF device you are programming for use in othervehicles as well as for future HomeLink pro-gramming. It is also suggested that upon thesale of the vehicle, the programmed Home-Link buttons be erased for security purposes.Refer to “Resetting HomeLink Buttons” onpage 91.
Programming HomeLink
NOTE
Some vehicles may require the ignition to be switched on or be in the “accessories”position for programming and/or operationof HomeLink. It is also recommended thata new battery be placed in the hand-heldtransmitter of the device being pro-grammed to HomeLink for quicker trainingand accurate transmission of the radio-fre-quency signal. The HomeLink buttonsmust be reset first. When this has beencompleted, Homelink is in learning modeso that you can perform programming.
1. Position the end of your hand-held trans-
mitter 1–3 inches (5–14 cm) away from the HomeLink button you wish to pro-gram while keeping the indicator light inview.
2. Simultaneously press and hold both the chosen HomeLink and hand-held trans-mitter buttons until the HomeLink indica-tor light changes from a slow to a rapidlyblinking light. Now you may release boththe HomeLink and hand-held transmitterbuttons.

3. Firmly press, hold for five seconds and
release the programmed HomeLink but-
ton up to two separate times to activate the door. If the door does not activate,press and hold the just-trained HomeLinkbutton and observe the indicator light.
• If the indicator light
stays on con-
stantly, programming is complete and your device should activate when the HomeLink button is pressed andreleased.
• If the indicator light blinks
rapidly for
two seconds and then turns to aconstant light continue with “Pro- gramming” steps 4-6 to complete the
programming of a rolling code equip- ped device (most commonly a garagedoor opener). 4. At the garage door opener receiver
(motor-head unit) in the garage, locate the “learn” or “smart” button. This canusually be found where the hangingantenna wire is attached to the motor-head unit.
5. Firmly press and release the “learn” or “smart” button. (The name and color ofthe button may vary by manufacturer.)There are 30 seconds to initiate step 6.
6. Return to the vehicle and firmly press, hold for two seconds and release the pro-grammed HomeLink button. Repeat the“press/hold/release” sequence a secondtime, and, depending on the brand of thegarage door opener (or other rolling codeequipped device), repeat this sequence athird time to complete the programmingprocess.
HomeLink should now activate your rollingcode equipped device.
Gate Operator/Canadian ProgrammingCanadian radio-frequency laws require trans-mitter signals to “time-out” (or quit) after sev-eral seconds of transmission – which may notbe long enough for HomeLink to pick up thesignal during programming. Similar to thisCanadian law, some U.S. gate operators aredesigned to “time-out” in the same manner. If you live in Canada or you are having diffi-culties programming a gate operator orgarage door opener by using the “Program-ming” procedures,
replace “Programming
HomeLink” step 2 with the following :
• Continue to press and hold the HomeLink button while you
press and release -
every two seconds (“cycle”) your hand-
held transmitter until the HomeLink indi-cator light changes from a slow to a rap-idly blinking light. Now you may releaseboth the HomeLink and hand-held trans-mitter buttons.
Proceed with “Programming” step 3 to com- plete.
Using HomeLink
To operate, simply press and hold the pro- grammed HomeLink button until the traineddevice begins to operate (this may take sev-eral seconds). Activation will now occur forthe trained device (i.e., garage door opener,gate operator, security system, entry doorlock, home/office lighting, etc.). For conven-ience, the hand-held transmitter of the devicemay also be used at any time. In the eventthat there are still programming difficulties orquestions, contact HomeLink at:www.homelink.com or by phoning the hotlineat 1–800–355–3515.

3. Pull the handle (1) outward to release thebackrest. The backrests are designed to lock at a 45 degree angle. Pull the handleagain to continue pressing it down until itlocks in the horizontal position.
To return the backrests to the upright posi-tion, pull handle 1 and pull the backrest up.

Folding the backrests—third row of seats
Folding down the backrest If necessary, fold in the load anchorage eye- lets before folding down the backrests. 1. Move the seats in the second row as far
forward as possible, see page 108.
2. Pull up the handle (see illustration 1).
3. Push the seat cushion firmly rearward, under the backrest (see illustration 2).

(the head
restraints fold down automatically) to the horizontal position.
WARNING
The seats in the third row are not equipped with top tether anchors or ISOFIX/LATCHlower child seat anchors. Child restraintsystems should never be used on theseseats.
Returning the backrest to the upright position
1. Fold up the backrest to the upright posi- tion.
2. Grasp the strap (see illustration 3) and pull the seat cushion out until it locks in place. This also locks the backrest in theupright position.
WARNING
•When one or more sections of the backrest is returned to the uprightposition, check that it is properlylocked in place by pushing and pullingit. The red indicators should also notbe visible.
• Return the outboard head restraints tothe upright position.
• Long loads should always be securelyanchored to help avoid injury in theevent of a sudden stop.
• Always turn the engine off and applythe parking brake when loading/unloading the vehicle.
• Place the transmission in the Park (
P)
position to help prevent inadvertentmovement of the gear selector.
• On hot days, the temperature in thevehicle interior can rise very quickly.Exposure of people to these high tem-peratures for even a short period oftime can cause heat-related injury ordeath. Small children are particularly atrisk.
