Economical driving

Economical driving conserves natural resources
Better driving economy may be obtained by thinking ahead, avoiding rapid starts andstops and adjusting the speed of your vehicleto immediate traffic conditions. Observe thefollowing rules:
• Bring the engine to normal operating tem- perature as soon as possible by drivingwith a light foot on the accelerator pedalfor the first few minutes of operation. Acold engine uses more fuel and is subjectto increased wear.
• Whenever possible, avoid using the vehi-cle for driving short distances. This doesnot allow the engine to reach normaloperating temperature.
• Drive carefully and avoid rapid accelera-tion and hard braking.
• Use the transmission's
D (Drive) position
as often as possible and avoid using"kickdown" to help improve fuel econ-omy.
• Do not exceed posted speed limits.
• Avoid carrying unnecessary items (extraload) in the vehicle.
• Maintain correct tire pressure. Check tirepressure regularly (when tires are cold).
• Remove snow tires when threat of snowor ice has ended. •
Note that roof racks, ski racks, etc, increase air resistance and also fuel con-sumption.
• At highway driving speeds, fuel consump-tion will be lower with the air conditioningon and the windows closed than with theair conditioning off and the windowsopen.
• Using the onboard trip computer's fuelconsumption modes can help you learnhow to drive more economically.
Other factors that decrease gas mileage are: • Dirty air cleaner
• Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter
• Dragging brakes
• Incorrect front end alignment.
Some of the above mentioned items and oth- ers are checked at the standard MaintenanceService intervals.
CAUTION
Drive slowly and carefully if going through standing water (i.e. flooded roadways,etc.). Damage to the engine could result ifexcess water is drawn in through the airintake system. Never drive the vehicle inwater deeper than 18 inches (48 cm).

Load carriers (accessory)

Positioning load carriersIf wing-shaped load carriers are used, make sure that they are installed on the roof railswith the rounded edge forward. Load carriersof this type are identical and can be placedanywhere along the roof rails. When not in use, we recommend that the front load carrier be placed approximately2 inches (5 cm) in front of the center roof railanchorage point and the rear load carrierapproximately 1.5 inches (3.5 cm) in front ofthe rear rail anchorage. This will help toreduce wind noise.
Installing load carriersMake sure that the load carriers are pressedfirmly out against the roof rail and securelytightened place. Check regularly that any loadcarriers are securely in place.
WARNING
Loads carried on the vehicle's roof should not exceed 220 lbs (100 kg), including theweight of the load carriers and any otherload carrying equipment (ski boxes, bicy-cle racks, etc.). Excessive loads on theroof can adversely affect the handling androadholding characteristics of the vehicle.

10. Reinstall the cover and retaining bracket and screw it securely in place.
NOTE
After the battery has been disconnected or replaced, lock and unlock the vehicle withthe central locking system's remote key toreactivate such features as the power win-dows, moonroof, courtesy lighting, etc.
WARNING
•The battery generates hydrogen gas, which is flammable and explosive. Thebattery is fitted with a ventilation hosewhich vents hydrogen gas out of thebattery compartment through a venti-lation opening in the bottom of thiscompartment. If the battery must bereplaced, it is essential that the ventila-tion hose is properly connected to thebattery and that it is routed throughthe ventilation opening provided (seeillustration).
• Be sure the ventilation hose is free ofdebris.
• Only use replacement batteries equip-ped with a ventilation hose. Consult atrained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician.

Listening to satellite radio
The SiriusXM ™ satellite system consists of a
number of high elevation satellites in geosyn- chronous orbit.
NOTE
• The digital signals from the SiriusXM
™
satellites are line-of-sight, which means that physical obstructions suchas bridges, tunnels, etc, may tempo-rarily interfere with signal reception.
• Avoid any obstructions, such as metal-lic objects transported on roof racks orin a ski box, or other antennas thatmay impede signals from the Sir-iusXM
™ satellites.
Selecting SiriusXM™ radio mode
1. Press Power to switch on the audio sys-
tem (see page 252 for information on the standard radio functions).
2. Turn the SELECTOR dial until Sirius 1 or
2 is displayed.
Activating SiriusXM ™ radio
1. Tune to a satellite channel that has no
audio, which means that the channel is unsubscribed and the text "
Call
888-539-SIRIUS TO SUBSCRIBE" is displayed (see also "Selecting a channel" in the right column).
2. Call SiriusXM ™ at 1-888-539-SIRIUS
(7474).
3. When asked for the SiriusXM ™ ID num-
ber press AUTO to display this number. It

SiriusXM™ ID
The SiriusXM ™ ID is required when contact-
ing the SiriusXM ™ Call Center. It is used to
activate your account and when making any account transactions. The SiriusXM ™ ID is
