Seat belt reminderThis symbol lights up to indicate that the driver has not fastenedhis/her seat belt.
Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)If this light comes on while the vehicle is being driven, or remainson for longer than approximately10 seconds after the vehicle hasbeen started, the SRS system's
diagnostic functions have detected a fault ina seat belt lock or pretensioner, a front air-bag, side impact airbag, and/or an inflatablecurtain. Have the system(s) inspected by atrained and qualified Volvo service technicianas soon as possible.
BRAKE – Brake failure warning lightIf the light comes on while driving or braking, stop immediately, open the hood and checkthe brake fluid level in the reservoir. seepage 225.
Canadian models are equippedwith this warning light.
If the BRAKE and ABS warning lights come on at the same time, this could indicate afault in the brake system.
• Stop the vehicle in a suitable place and switch off the engine.
• Restart the engine.
• If both warning lights go off, no furtheraction is required.
• If both lights are still on after the enginehas been restarted, switch off the engineagain and check the brake fluid level (seepage 225 for the location of the brakefluid reservoir).
If the brake fluid level is above the MIN mark,
drive carefully to a trained and qualified Volvo service technician and have the brake systeminspected.
WARNING
If the fluid level is below the MIN mark in
the reservoir or if a Brake failure –
Service urgent message is displayed in
the text window: DO NOT DRIVE. Have
the vehicle towed to a trained and qualified Volvo service technician and have thebrake system inspected.
PARK BRAKE Parking brake appliedThis light will be on when the parking brake (hand brake) is applied. The parking brakepedal is located on the left side of the driver'sfootwell, see page 80 for more information.
Canadian models are equippedwith this symbol.
Oil pressure warning light 2If the light comes on while driv- ing, stop the vehicle and thenstop the engine immediatelyand check the engine oil level, see page 62. If the light stays
on after restart, have the vehicle towed to the nearest trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician. After hard driving, the light maycome on occasionally when the engine isidling. This is normal, provided it goes offwhen the engine speed is increased.
Generator warning lightIf the light comes on while the engine is running, have the charg-ing system checked.

Driving with the tailgate open: Driving
with the tailgate open could lead to poi- sonous exhaust gases entering the pas-senger compartment.
• If the tailgate must be kept open for any reason, proceed as follows:
• Close the windows
• Set the ventilation system control to airflow to floor, windshield and side win-dows and blower control to its highestsetting.
Gasoline containing alcohol and ethers, "Oxygenated fuels"
Some fuel suppliers sell gasoline containing "oxygenates" which are usually alcohols orethers. In some areas, state or local lawsrequire that the service pump be marked indi-cating use of alcohols or ethers. However,there are areas in which the pumps areunmarked. If you are not sure whether there isalcohol or ethers in the gasoline you buy,check with the service station operator. Tomeet seasonal air quality standards, someareas require the use of "oxygenated" fuel. Volvo allows the use of the following "oxy- genated" fuels; however, the octane ratingslisted on page 139 must still be met.
Alcohol – EthanolFuels containing up to 10% ethanol by vol- ume may be used. Ethanol may also be refer-red to as Ethyl alcohol, or "Gasohol". Ethers – MTBE: Fuels containing up to 15% MTBE may be used.
MethanolDo not use gasolines containing methanol(methyl alcohol, wood alcohol). This practicecan result in vehicle performance deteriora-tion and can damage critical parts in the fuelsystem. Such damage may not be coveredunder the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
Weight distribution affects handlingAt the specified curb weight your vehicle hasa tendency to understeer, which means thatthe steering wheel has to be turned morethan might seem appropriate for the curva-ture of a bend. This ensures good stability and reduces the risk of rear wheel skid. Remember that theseproperties can alter with the vehicle load. The heavier the load in the cargo area, the less the tendency to understeer.
Handling, roadholdingVehicle load, tire design and inflation pres-sure all affect vehicle handling. Therefore,check that the tires are inflated to the recom- mended pressure according to the vehicleload. See "Tire pressure" section. Loads should be distributed so that capacity weight or maximum permissible axle loadsare not exceeded.
Conserving electrical currentKeep the following in mind to help minimizebattery drain:
• When the engine is not running, avoid turning the ignition key to position
II (see
page 145). Many electrical systems (theaudio system, the optional infotainment/navigation systems, power windows, etc)will function with the ignition key in posi-tion I. This position reduces drain on the
battery.
• Please keep in mind that using systems,accessories, etc that consume a greatdeal of current when the engine is notrunning could result in the battery beingcompletely drained. Driving or having theengine running for approximately15 minutes will help keep the batterycharged.
NOTE
A warning message will be displayed in the text window in the instrument panel whenthe battery charge is low.

CAUTION
Vehicles with AWD (All Wheel Drive) with the front wheels off the ground should notbe towed at speeds above 50 mph(70 km/h) or for distances longer than30 miles (50 km).
CAUTION
•Please check with state and local authorities before attempting this typeof towing, as vehicles being towed aresubject to regulations regarding maxi-mum towing speed, length and type oftowing device, lighting, etc.
• If the vehicle's battery is dead, do notattempt to start the vehicle by pushingor pulling it as this will damage thethree-way catalytic converter(s). Theengine must be jump started using anauxiliary battery (see page 152).
• If the vehicle is being towed on a flatbed truck, the towing eyelets must notbe used to pull the vehicle up onto theflat bed or to secure the vehicle on theflat bed. Consult the tow truck opera-tor.
WARNING
•The power brakes and power steering will not function when the engine is notrunning. Approximately 5 times morepressure will be required on the brakepedal and the steering wheel will beconsiderably harder to turn.
• The towing eyelets must not be usedfor pulling the vehicle out of a ditch orfor any similar purpose involvingsevere strain.

Towing vehicles with front wheel drive/All Wheel Drive
Volvo recommends the use of flat bed equip- ment. If wheel lift equipment must be used, please use extreme caution to help avoid damage tothe vehicle.
In this case, the vehicle should
be towed with the rear wheels on theground if at all possible. If it is absolutely necessary to tow the vehicle with the front wheels on the ground, pleaserefer to the towing information on the previ-ous page.
CAUTION
• Sling-type equipment applied at the front will damage radiator and air con-ditioning lines.
• It is equally important not to use sling-type equipment at the rear or apply lift-ing equipment inside the rear wheels;serious damage to the rear axle mayresult.
• If the vehicle is being towed on a flatbed truck, the towing eyelets must notbe used to secure the vehicle on theflat bed. Consult the tow truck opera-tor.

replaced at 6-year intervals, even if it has never been used. A tire's age can be determined by the DOT stamp on the sidewall (see the illustration). A tire with e.g., visible cracks or discoloration should be replaced immediately.
Tread wear indicator

The tires have wear indicator strips running across or parallel to the tread. The letters TWI
are printed on the side of the tire. When approximately 1/16" (1.6 mm) is left on thetread, these strips become visible and indi-cate that the tire should be replaced. Tireswith less than 1/16" (1.6 mm) tread offer verypoor traction. When replacing worn tires, it is recommended that the tire be identical in type (radial) andsize as the one being replaced. Using a tire ofthe same make (manufacturer) will preventalteration of the driving characteristics of thevehicle.
Improving tire economy
•
Maintain correct tire pressure (see the inflation pressure table on page 183).
• Drive smoothly: avoid fast starts, hardbraking and tire screeching.
• Tire wear increases with speed.
• Correct front wheel alignment is veryimportant.
• Unbalanced wheels impair tire economyand driving comfort.
• Tires must maintain the same direction ofrotation throughout their lifetime.
• When replacing tires, the tires with themost tread should be mounted on therear wheels to reduce the chance of over-steer during hard braking. •
Hitting curbs or potholes can damage thetires and/or wheels permanently.

Federal law mandates that tire manufacturers place standardized information on the side-wall of all tires (see the illustration). The following information is listed on the tire sidewall: The tire designation:
NOTE

215 : the width of the tire (in millimeters)
from sidewall edge to sidewall edge. The larger the number, the wider the tire.
65 : The ratio of the tire's height to its
width in percent.
R : Radial tire (the designation RF and the
symbol indicate that the vehicle is
equipped with optional self-supporting run flat tires 1
. See page 205 for more
information about these tires).
15 : The diameter of the wheel rim (in
inches).
95 : The tire's load index. In this example,
a load index of 95 equals a maximum load of 1521 lbs (690 kg).
H : The tire's speed rating, or the maxi-
mum speed at which the tire is designed to be driven for extended periods of time,carrying a permissible load for the vehi-cle, and with correct inflation pressure.For example, H indicates a speed ratingof 130 mph (210 km/h).
NOTE
The tire's load index and speed rating may not appear on the sidewall because theyare not required by law.
M+S or M/S = Mud and Snow; AT = All
Terrain; AS = All Season
U.S. DOT Tire Identification Number (TIN): This begins with the letters "DOT"
and indicates that the tire meets all fed- eral standards. The next two numbers orletters are the plant code where it wasmanufactured, the next two are the tiresize code and the last four numbers rep-resent the week and year the tire wasbuilt. For example, 1510 means that thetire was manufactured during week 15 of2010. The numbers in between are mar-keting codes used at the manufacturer'sdiscretion. This information helps a tiremanufacturer identify a tire for safetyrecall purposes.
Tire Ply Composition and Material Used: Indicates the number of plies indi-
cates or the number of layers of rubber- coated fabric in the tire tread and side-wall. Tire manufacturers also must indi-cate the ply materials in the tire and thesidewall, which include steel, nylon, poly-ester, and others.

system’s compressor. If necessary, release air from the tire by turning the airrelease knob counterclockwise.
CAUTION
The compressor should not be used for more than 10 minutes at a time to avoidoverheating.
WARNING
If you interrupt your trip for more than 1 hour, check the inflation pressure in thedamaged tire again before continuing.
Replacing the sealing compound container
The sealing compound container must be replaced if:• the tire sealing system has been used to repair a tire
• the container’s expiration date haspassed (see the date on decal).
NOTE
• After use, the sealing compound bot- tle, the hose, and certain other systemcomponents must be replaced. Pleaseconsult your Volvo retailer for replace-ment parts.
• If the sealing compound bottle’s expi-ration date has passed, please take itto a Volvo retailer or a recycling stationthat can properly dispose of harmfulsubstances.
Inflating tires
The tire sealing system can be used to inflate the tires. To do so:
1. Park the car in a safe place.
2. The compressor should be switched off.
Ensure that the on/off switch is in position 0 (the 0 side of the switch should be
pressed down).
3. Take out the electrical wire and hose.
4. Remove the valve cap from the tire’s inflation valve and screw the hose con- nector onto the valve as tightly as possi-ble by hand.
5. Connect the electrical wire to the nearest 12-volt socket in the vehicle. 6. Start the vehicle’s engine.
WARNING
•
The vehicle’s engine should be running when the tire sealing system is used toavoid battery drain. Therefore, be surethe vehicle is parked in a well ventilatedplace, or outdoors, before using thesystem. The parking brake should besecurely applied and the gear selectorshould be in the
P (park) position.
• Children should never be left unatten-ded in the vehicle when the engine isrunning.
7. Check the tire’s inflation pressure on the
gauge. Switch off the compressor briefly to get a clear reading from the pressuregauge.
8. Refer to the tire inflation tables for the correct inflation pressure. If the tire needsto be inflated, start the tire sealing sys-tem’s compressor (press the on/offswitch to position I). If necessary, releaseair from the tire by turning the air releaseknob counterclockwise.

Jack attachment points
Jack attachmentsThere are two attachment points for the jack on each side of the vehicle. These attachmentpoints are under the center of each door.
WARNING
There is an attachment point on each side of the vehicle located under the pillarsbetween the front and rear doors. Thispoint is used during the production proc-ess only, and is NOT intended for attach-ing the jack.

Changing a wheel1. Park the vehicle on a firm, level, non-slip-pery surface.
2. Engage the parking brake and put the gear selector in the Park position.
3. Loosen the wheel bolts by exerting down- ward pressure on the lug wrench. 4. Remove the wheel cover (where applica-
ble) using the lug wrench in the tool bag.
5. With the wheels still on the ground, use the lug wrench to loosen the wheel bolts ½ – 1 turn. Turn the bolts counterclock-wise to loosen the bolts.

Repeat steps 1-3 to turn TPMS on again.
Self-supporting run flat tires (SST)*
Self-supporting run flat tires are available as optional equipment. The vehicle must beequipped with the Tire Pressure MonitoringSystem (TPMS) if tires of this type are instal-led. Tires of this type have specially reinforced sidewalls that make it possible to continuedriving to a limited extent even though the tirehas lost some or all of its inflation pressure.These tires are mounted on special rims (nor-mal tires can also be mounted on these rims). If an SST tire loses inflation pressure, the yel- low TPMS symbol illuminates in the instru-ment panel and a text message is also dis-played. If this happens, reduce speed to not more than 50 mph (80 km/h). The tire shouldbe replaced as soon as possible. Drive carefully; it may be difficult to determine which tire is damaged. To find the damagedtire, check the inflation pressure in all fourtires.
WARNING
•
SST tires should only be mounted by service technicians who are familiarwith tires of this type.
• SST tires may only be mounted onvehicles equipped with TPMS.
• Do not drive faster than 50 mph(80 km/h) if TPMS indicates that a tirehas lost inflation pressure.
• Do not drive farther than 50 miles(80 km) before replacing a damagedSST tire.
• Drive carefully and avoid e.g., hardbraking or fast turns.
• SST tires must be replaced if they aredamaged. A tire of this type cannot berepaired.
