WARNING

x Properly worn safety belts are the single most effective means of reducing the risk of serious injury and death during sudden braking or driving maneuvers and in automobile accidents. For this reason, always wear your safety belt properly and make sure all passengers wear their safety belts properly as well whenever the vehicle is moving.
x Never wrap your thumbs around the steering wheel rim. When driving off-road, obstacles in front of the wheels can make the steering wheel jerk suddenly in your hands and cause personal injury. Rest your thumbs pointing up on the on the surface of the steering wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions.

WARNING
The engine compartment of any motor vehicle is a potentially dangerous area and can cause serious personal injury.
x Always use extreme caution when doing any work in the engine compartment. Always follow commonly accepted safety practices and use common sense. Never risk personal injury.
x Never perform any work in the engine compartment unless you know exactly how to carry out the job and have the correct technical information and the correct tools.
x If you are uncertain about what to do, have the work performed by an authorized Volkswagen dealer, an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility, or another qualified workshop. Serious personal injury may result from improperly performed work.
x We strongly recommend that you always have HID – High Intensity Discharge (Xenon) headlights and H7 bulbs replaced by a qualified technician. Serious personal injury may result from improperly performed work.
x Never open or close the engine hood if steam or coolant is escaping. Hot steam or coolant can cause serious burns. Always wait until you no longer see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine.
x Always let the engine cool down completely before carefully opening the hood.
x Hot parts of the engine and the exhaust system will burn skin on contact.
x When the engine has cooled down and you are ready to open the hood:
– Apply the electronic parking brake and shift the transmission into Park (P).
– Take the vehicle key out of the ignition.
– On vehicles with Keyless Access, make sure that the remote control vehicle key is out of range of the vehicle and that the vehicle cannot be started by depressing the starter button.
– Always keep children and others away from the engine compartment and never leave them unsupervised.
x The engine coolant system is under pressure when the engine is hot. Never unscrew the coolant expansion tank cap when the engine is hot. Hot coolant can spray out and cause severe burns and other serious injuries.
– Turn the cap slowly and very carefully in a counterclockwise direction while applying light downward pressure on the top of the cap.
– Always protect your face, hands, and arms from hot escaping coolant or steam by covering the cap with a large, thick rag.
x Never spill fluids on the engine or exhaust system when refilling. Spilling fluids onto hot parts of the engine or exhaust system can cause a fire.

x Carefully unscrew the cap ⇒ .
x Add only new engine coolant according to Volkswagen specifications (⇒ Engine coolant
specifications) ⇒ .
x The engine coolant level must be inside the marks on the side of the reservoir . Do not fill above
the top edge of the filling range! ⇒ .
x Screw the lid tightly.
x Even in an emergency, do not use any other kind of coolant additive if engine coolant meeting
Volkswagen specifications (⇒ Engine coolant specifications) is unavailable! Instead, add distilled
water only ⇒ . As soon as possible, have the correct coolant ratio restored using engine coolant
that meets Volkswagen specifications ⇒ Engine coolant specifications.
WARNING
Hot steam and hot engine coolant can cause serious burns.
x Never open the hood if you see steam or coolant escaping from the engine compartment. Always wait until you no longer see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine.

NOTICE
x Use distilled water only when adding coolant! All other types of water contain chemical compounds that can cause extensive corrosion damage to the engine. This can even lead to engine failure. If you have added non-distilled water, take the vehicle immediately to an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility to have the coolant system drained, flushed, and refilled completely with the proper coolant.
x Refill engine coolant only up to the top edge of the marked fill range . Excess engine coolant may be forced out of the engine cooling system when it gets hot and cause damage.
x In the case of significant engine coolant loss, refill engine coolant only when the engine is completely cooled down. Significant engine coolant loss is a sign of leaks in the cooling

x Carefully fold the wiper arm back down onto the window.
Changing wiper blades
x Lift the wiper arm(s) away from the windshield.
x Tilt the wiper blade 90 ° clockwise to the wiper arm and pull off the wiper blade ⇒ fig. 303.
x Install a new wiper blade of same length and type onto the wiper arm by pushing in the opposite direction of the arrow until it latches.
x Carefully fold the wiper arm back down onto the windshield.
Changing the rear window wiper blade
x Lift the wiper arm away from the rear window.
x Pull the wiper blade and the retainer out of the holder.
x Install a new wiper blade of same length and type onto the wiper arm by pushing in the opposite
direction of the arrow ⇒ fig. 304 until it latches.
x Carefully fold the wiper arm back down onto the rear window.
WARNING
Worn or dirty wiper blades reduce visibility and increase the risk of accidents and severe injuries.
x Always change wiper blades if they are damaged or worn, and if they cannot clean the windows sufficiently.
NOTICE
x Damaged or dirty wiper blades can scratch the windshield and the rear window.
x Solvents, abrasive sponges and sharp-edged objects will damage the graphite coating on the wiper blades.
x Do not clean the windows with gasoline, nail polish remover, paint thinner or similar fluids.
x To help prevent damage to the engine hood and the windshield wiper arms, lift the wiper arms away from the windshield only when they are in the service position.

Function Using the emergency key
Convenience opening Insert the emergency key into the driver door lock, turn counterclockwise, and hold.
Convenience closing Insert the emergency key into the driver door lock, turn clockwise, and hold.

To cancel the function, release the emergency key.
The driver door can be unlocked separately from the inside the vehicle by pulling the door handle

Removing the wheel
x Review the checklist ⇒ Preparations for changing a wheel.
x Loosen the wheel bolts ⇒ Wheel bolts.
x Lift the vehicle ⇒ Lifting the vehicle with the vehicle jack.
x Unscrew the topmost loosened wheel bolt using the hexagonal socket in the screwdriver handle
⇒ fig. 317 place it on a clean surface.
x Screw the mounting pin in the vehicle tool kit into the empty hole by hand ⇒ fig. 325.
x Remove the remaining wheel bolts using the hexagonal socket in the screwdriver handle
⇒ fig. 317 and place them on a clean surface.
x Remove the wheel.
Mounting spare tire or collapsible spare tire
If the tire is a unidirectional tire, be sure to install it in the proper rolling direction ⇒ Unidirectional tires.
x Put the spare tire or collapsible spare tire into place on the vehicle.
x Screw in all wheel bolts clockwise and tighten them slightly using the hexagonal socket in the screwdriver handle.
x Unscrew the mounting pin and screw in the last wheel bolt.
x Lower the vehicle with the jack.
x Use the lug wrench to firmly tighten all wheel bolts (turn clockwise) ⇒ . Do not tighten them in sequence! Tighten any wheel bolt to begin, then tighten the wheel bolt diagonally opposite the first bolt, and so forth.
x Install the wheel bolt caps, center wheel hubcap, or wheel cover, if any ⇒ Wheel trim.
WARNING
Wheel bolts that are tightened or installed improperly can come loose, causing loss of vehicle control, a crash, and serious personal injury.
x Always keep wheel bolts and threads in the wheel hub clean and free of oil and grease. The wheel bolts must turn easily and must be tightened with the right torque.
x Use the hexagonal socket in the screwdriver handle only to turn the wheel bolts when they are loose, never to loosen them or tighten them firmly.
WARNING
Improper use of a collapsible spare tire can cause loss of vehicle control, a crash or other accident, and serious personal injury.
x Never use a collapsible spare tire if it is damaged or worn down to the wear indicators.
x Never drive faster than 50 mph (80 km/h) with a collapsible spare tire. Avoid full-throttle acceleration, heavy braking, and fast cornering!
x Never drive more than 125 miles (200 km) with a 16" collapsible spare wheel that is installed on the front axle (drive axle).
x Replace the collapsible spare with a normal wheel and tire as soon as possible. Collapsible spare tires are designed for brief use only.

x Unscrew the valve core from the tire valve using the valve core wrench ⇒ fig. 326 (1) and place it on a clean surface.
x Vigorously shake the tire inflation cylinder ⇒ fig. 326 (10) a few times back and forth.
x Tightly screw the filling hose ⇒ fig. 326 (3) to the tire inflation bottle (turn clockwise). The foil on the seal is automatically pierced.
x Remove the sealing plug from the filling hose ⇒ fig. 326 (3) and slide the open end onto the tire valve.
x Hold the cylinder with the bottom pointing up and fill the entire contents of the tire inflation cylinder into the tire.
x Detach the empty tire inflation cylinder from the valve.
x Using the valve core wrench ⇒ fig. 326 (1) screw the valve core back into the tire valve.
Inflating the tire
x Screw the tire inflation hose ⇒ fig. 326 (5) of the air compressor tightly to the tire valve.
x Check whether the air release valve ⇒ fig. 326 (7) is screwed on tightly.
x Open the engine hood ⇒ Working in the engine compartment.
x Attach the cable clips ⇒ fig. 326 (9) only to the jump-start terminals in the engine compartment
⇒ fig. 327. The red clip on the compressor cable is connected to the positive (+) terminal; the black clip is connected to the negative terminal (—).
x Start the vehicle engine and let it run.
x Switch the air compressor on using the ON / OFF switch ⇒ fig. 326 (8),
x Let the air compressor run until a pressure of 36 – 44 psi (250 - 300 kPa) is reached ⇒ .
Maximum run time 8 minutes ⇒ .
x Switch off the air compressor.
x If an air pressure of 36 – 44 psi (250 - 300 kPa) cannot be reached, unscrew the tire inflation hose from the tire valve.
x Drive about 30 feet (10 meters) backwards or forwards so that the sealant can be distributed inside the tire.
x Connect the tire inflation hose of the air compressor again to the tire valve and repeat the inflation process.
x If the required tire pressure still cannot be reached, the tire is too badly damaged. The tire cannot
be sealed using the tire mobility set. Do not drive the vehicle. Get professional assistance ⇒ .
x Disconnect the air compressor and unscrew the tire inflation hose from the tire valve.
x If a tire pressure of 36 – 44 psi (250 – 300 kPa) is reached, continue driving right away and drive at a speed of not more than 50 mph (80 km/h).
x Check tire pressure after 10 minutes of driving ⇒ Check after 10 minutes of driving.
WARNING
The tire inflation hose and air compressor can get hot during inflation.
x Protect hands and skin from hot parts.
x Do not place the hot tire inflation hose or hot air compressor on flammable material.
x Let the equipment cool off almost completely before stowing it.
x If the tire cannot be inflated to at least 36 psi (250 kPa), the damage is too great to be repaired with the tire mobility set. The sealant is not able to seal the tire. Do not drive the vehicle. Get professional assistance.

Please carry out each step only in the order specified:

4. Pull the bulb holder out towards the rear along with the light bulb. Pull the bulb holder up and out of its catch, turn it counterclockwise about 20°, and remove it towards the rear along with the light bulb.
5. Pull the light bulb straight out of bulb holder. Pull the light bulb and base straight out of bulb holder.
6. Replace the burned out light bulb with a new bulb of the same type.
7. Insert the bulb holder into the headlight and slide it in completely. With the lamp holder turned about 20° counterclockwise, inert it into the headlight assembly and push it in all the way. Turn the lamp holder clockwise as far as it goes and push it down into the catch.
8. Fit rubber cover (B) onto back of headlight. Reinstall the plastic cover with control unit (C). Make sure that the plastic cover clicks into place.
The illustrations show the left headlight assembly from the rear. The right headlight assembly is the mirror image of the left headlight assembly.
Different models may have different lights, and the location and design of covers, bulb holders, and bulbs may be in a different location than shown in the illustrations.
You cannot replace the LEDs in LED daytime running lights. Contact your authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility for assistance.
