3688-2. Steps to take in an emergency
If you think something is wrong
Fluid leaks under the vehicle
(Water dripping from the air conditioning after use is normal)
Flat-looking tires or uneven tire wear
High engine coolant temperature warning light flashes or comes on
Changes in exhaust sound
Excessive tire squeal when cornering
Strange noises related to the suspension system
Pinging or other noises related to the hybrid system
Engine misfire, stumbling or running roughly
Appreciable loss of power
Vehicle pulls heavily to one side when braking
Vehicle pulls heavily to one side when driving on a level road
Loss of brake effectiveness, spongy feeling, pedal almost touches
the floor
If you notice any of the following symptoms, your vehicle proba-
bly needs adjustment or repair. Contact any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped pro-
fessional as soon as possible.

When trouble arises
When a tire is replaced with a spare tire (vehicles with a tire pressure
warning system)
The spare tire is not equipped with a tire pressure warning valve and trans-
mitter. If a tire goes flat, the tire pressure warning light will not turn off even
though the flat tire has been replaced with the spare tire. Replace the spare
tire with the repaired tire and adjust the tire inflation pressure. The tire pres-
sure warning light will go off after a few minutes.
If the tire pressure warning system is not functioning (vehicles with a
tire pressure warning system)
The tire pressure warning system will be disabled in the following conditions:
(When the condition becomes normal, the system will work properly.)
If tires not equipped with tire pressure warning valves and transmitters are
used
If the ID code on the tire pressure warning valves and transmitters is not
registered in the tire pressure warning computer
If the tire inflation pressure is 500 kPa (5.1 kgf/cm
2 or bar, 73 psi) or higher
The tire pressure warning system may be disabled in the following conditions:
(When the condition becomes normal, the system will work properly.)
If electronic devices or facilities using similar radio wave frequencies are
nearby
If a radio set at a similar frequency is in use in the vehicle
If a window tint that affects the radio wave signals is installed
If there is a lot of snow or ice on the vehicle, particularly around the wheels
or wheel housings
If non-genuine Toyota wheels are used (Even if you use Toyota wheels, the
tire pressure warning system may not work properly with some types of
tires.)
If tire chains are used
If the tire pressure warning light frequently comes on after blinking for 1
minute (vehicles with a tire pressure warning system)
If the tire pressure warning light frequently comes on after blinking for 1 min-
ute when the power switch is turned on, have it checked by any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.

WARNING
Driving to spread the liquid sealant evenly
Observe the following precautions to reduce the risk of accidents.
Failing to do so may result in a loss of vehicle control and cause death or
serious injury.
Drive the vehicle carefully at a low speed. Be especially careful when turn-
ing and cornering.
If the vehicle does not drive straight or you feel a pull through the steering
wheel, stop the vehicle and check the following.
• Tire condition. The tire may have separated from the wheel.
• Tire inflation pressure. If the tire inflation pressure is 130 kPa (1.3 kgf/cm
2
or bar, 19 psi) or less, the tire may be severely damaged.
NOTICE
When performing an emergency repair
A tire should only be repaired with the emergency tire puncture repair kit if
the damage is caused by a sharp object such as nail or screw passing
through the tire tread.
Do not remove the sharp object from the tire. Removing the object may
widen the opening and disenable emergency repair with the repair kit.
The repair kit is not waterproof. Make sure that the repair kit is not
exposed to water, such as when it is being used in the rain.
Do not put the repair kit directly onto dusty ground such as sand at the
side of the road. If the repair kit vacuums up dust etc., a malfunction may
occur.

Precautions when the 12-volt battery is discharged
In some cases, it may not be possible to unlock the doors using entry func-
tion of the smart entry & start system immediately after the 12-volt battery
has been disconnected and reconnected. Use the wireless remote control
or the mechanical key to lock or unlock the doors.
The hybrid system may not start on the first attempt after the 12-volt battery
has recharged but will start normally after the second attempt. This is not a
malfunction.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system: The power switch mode is mem-
orized by the vehicle. When the 12-volt battery is reconnected, the system
will return to the mode it was in before the 12-volt battery was discharged.
Before disconnecting the 12-volt battery, turn the power switch off. If the
power switch was in ACCESSORY or ON mode before the 12-volt battery
was discharged, the audio system and/or air conditioning system may oper-
ate when the 12-volt battery is reconnected.
WARNING
Avoiding 12-volt battery fires or explosions
Observe the following precautions to prevent accidentally igniting the flam-
mable gas that may be emitted from the 12-volt battery:
Make sure each jumper cable is connected to the correct terminal and that
it is not unintentionally in contact with anything other than the intended ter-
minal.
Do not allow the other end of the jumper cable connected to the “+” termi-
nal to come into contact with any other parts or metal surfaces in the area,
such as brackets or unpainted metal.
Do not allow the + and - clamps of the jumper cables to come into contact
with each other.
Do not smoke, use matches, cigarette lighters or allow open flame near
the 12-volt battery.
After recharging the 12-volt battery
Have the 12-volt battery inspected at any authorized Toyota dealer or
repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional as soon as
possible. If the 12-volt battery is deteriorating, continued use may cause the
12-volt battery to emit a malodorous gas, which may be detrimental to the
health of passengers.

If your vehicle overheats
The high engine coolant temperature warning light (P. 370)
comes on or flashes, or a loss of hybrid system power is experi-
enced. (For example, the vehicle speed does not increase.)
If the hybrid system overheat warning light (P. 373) comes on.
Steam comes out from under the hood.
If the high engine coolant temperature warning light comes on
or flashes
Stop the vehicle in a safe place and turn off the air conditioning
system, and then stop the hybrid system.
If you see steam:
Carefully lift the hood after the steam subsides.
If you do not see steam:
Carefully lift the hood.
After the hybrid system has

Start the hybrid system and turn the air conditioning system on to
check that the radiator cooling fan operates and to check for
coolant leaks from the radiator or hoses.
The fan operates when the air conditioning system is turned on immedi-
ately after a cold start. Confirm that the fan is operating by checking the
fan sound and air flow. If it is difficult to check these, turn the air condi-
tioning system on and off repeatedly.
(The fan may not operate in freezing temperatures.)
If the fan is not operating:
Stop the hybrid system immediately and contact any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped
professional.
If the fan is operating:
Have the vehicle inspected at the nearest authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped profes-
sional.

During customization
As the hybrid system needs to be operating during customization, ensure
that the vehicle is parked in a place with adequate ventilation. In a closed
area such as a garage, exhaust gases including harmful carbon monoxide
(CO) may collect and enter the vehicle. This may lead to death or a serious
health hazard.
NOTICE
During customization
To prevent 12-volt battery discharge, ensure that the hybrid system is oper-
ating while customizing features.
