Rain-sensing windshield wiper
When is selected, the wiper will operate automatically when the
sensor detects falling rain. The system automatically adjusts wiper
timing in accordance with rain volume and vehicle speed.
When is selected, the sensor sensitivity can be adjusted as fol-
lows by turning the switch ring:

Rain-sensing windshield

Low speed windshield
wiper operation
High speed windshield
wiper operation
Temporary operation
Increases the sensitivity

The power switch is in the “ON” position.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system
The power switch is in ON mode.
Raindrop sensor (vehicles with a rain-sensing windshield wiper)
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system: If the wiper switch is turned to
the position while the power switch is in the “ON” position, the wiper
will operate once to show that “AUTO” mode is activated.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system: If the wiper switch is turned to
the position while the power switch is in ON mode, the wiper will oper-
ate once to show that “AUTO” mode is activated.
When the sensor sensitivity ring is turned toward high while in “AUTO”
mode, the wiper will operate once to indicate that the sensor sensitivity is
enhanced.
If the temperature of the raindrop sensor is 90°C (194°F) or higher, or -15°C
(5°F) or lower, automatic operation may not occur. In this case, operate the
wiper in any mode other than “AUTO” mode.

The raindrop sensor judges the amount

An optical sensor is adopted. It may not
operate properly when sunlight from the
rising or setting of the sun intermittently
strikes the windshield, or if bugs etc. are
present on the windshield.

If no windshield washer fluid sprays
Check that the washer nozzle is not blocked, if there is washer fluid in the
windshield washer fluid reservoir.
WARNING
Caution regarding the use of windshield wiper in “AUTO” mode (vehi-
cles with a rain-sensing windshield wiper)
The windshield wiper may operate unexpectedly if the sensor is touched or
the windshield is subject to vibration in “AUTO” mode. Take care that your
fingers, etc., do not become caught in the windshield wiper.
Caution regarding the use of washer fluid
When it is cold, do not use the washer fluid until the windshield becomes
warm. The fluid may freeze on the windshield and cause low visibility. This
may lead to an accident, resulting in death or serious injury.
NOTICE
When the windshield is dry
Do not use the wiper, as they may damage the windshield.
When there is no washer fluid spray from the nozzle
Damage to the washer fluid pump may be caused if the lever is pulled
toward you and held continually.
When a nozzle becomes blocked
In this case, contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional.
Do not try to clear it with a pin or other object. The nozzle will be damaged.

NOTICE
When the rear window is dry
Do not use the wiper, as it may damage the rear window.
When the washer fluid tank is empty
Do not operate the switch continually as the washer fluid pump may over-
heat.
When a nozzle becomes blocked
In this case, contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional.
Do not try to clear it with a pin or other object. The nozzle will be damaged.

Acceleration pedal/brake pedal operation
Drive your vehicle smoothly. Avoid abrupt acceleration and
deceleration. Gradual acceleration and deceleration will make
more effective use of the electric motor (traction motor) without
having to use gasoline engine power.
Avoid repeated acceleration. Repeated acceleration consumes
hybrid battery (traction battery) power, resulting in poor fuel con-
sumption. Battery power can be restored by driving with the
accelerator pedal slightly released.
When braking
Make sure to operate the brakes gently and in a timely manner. A
greater amount of electrical energy can be regenerated when slow-
ing down.
Delays
Repeated acceleration and deceleration, as well as long waits at
traffic lights, will lead to bad fuel economy. Check traffic reports
before leaving and avoid delays as much as possible. When driving
in a traffic jam, gently release the brake pedal to allow the vehicle to
move forward slightly while avoiding overuse of the accelerator
pedal. Doing so can help control excessive gasoline consumption.
Highway driving
Control and maintain the vehicle at a constant speed. Before stop-
ping at a toll booth or similar, allow plenty of time to release the
accelerator and gently apply the brakes. A greater amount of elec-
trical energy can be regenerated when slowing down.

Winter driving tips
Use fluids that are appropriate to the prevailing outside tempera-
tures.
• Engine oil
• Engine/power control unit coolant
• Washer fluid
• Power control unit coolant (hybrid system)
Have a service technician inspect the condition of the 12-volt bat-
tery.
Have the vehicle fitted with four snow tires or purchase a set of tire
chains for the front tires.
Ensure that all tires are the same size and brand, and that their wear
level is not noticeably different with each other. Also make sure that
chains match the size of the tires.
Perform the following according to the driving conditions:
Do not try to forcibly open a window or move a wiper that is frozen.
Pour warm water over the frozen area to melt the ice. Wipe away
the water immediately to prevent it from freezing.
To ensure proper operation of the climate control system fan,
remove any snow that has accumulated on the air inlet vents in
front of the windshield.
Check for and remove any excess ice or snow that may have accu-
mulated on the exterior lights, vehicle’s roof, chassis, around the
tires or on the brakes.
Remove any snow or mud from the bottom of your shoes before
getting in the vehicle.
Carry out the necessary preparations and inspections before
driving the vehicle in winter. Always drive the vehicle in a man-
ner appropriate to the prevailing weather conditions.
