Hood
If the hood is opened while the engine is stopped by the Stop & Start system,
the engine cannot be restarted by the Stop & Start system or the automatic
engine start function. Restart the engine with the engine switch or the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch operation. ( →P. 185, 181)
■ Stop & Start system warning buzzer
If the engine is stopped by the Stop & Start system and either of the following
actions is performed, the “ECO” indicator will flash and a buzzer will sound a
warning:
●The driver’s door is opened.
● The shift lever is shifted into a position other than “N” with the clutch
pedal released.
■ If the “ECO” indicator continues to flash
The Stop & Start system may be malfunctioning. Contact any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or anot her duly qualified and equipped profes-
sional.
■ If the windshield is fogged up while the engine is stopped by the Stop
& Start system
● Vehicles with a manual air condi tioning system: Restart the engine by
clutch pedal operation ( →P. 217) and then press to turn the air
conditioning on and set the air outlet selection dial to . ( →P. 254)
● Vehicles with an automatic air condi tioning system: Turn the windshield
defogger on. (The engine will start due to the automatic engine start func-
tion.) ( →P. 263)
If the windshield fogs up frequently, press the “ECO OFF” switch to deac-
tivate the system.

CAUTION
■ When the Stop & Start system is operating
●Keep the shift lever in “N” and apply the brake pedal or parking brake for
safety while the engine is stopped due to the Stop & Start system (while
the “ECO” indicator is on).
Unexpected accidents may occur due to the automatic engine start func-
tion.
● Do not leave the vehicle while the engine is stopped due to the Stop &
Start system (while the “ECO” indicator is on).
Unexpected accidents may occur due to the automatic engine start func-
tion.
● Ensure that the engine is not stopped by the Stop & Start system while the
vehicle is in a poorly ventilated area. The engine may restart due to the
automatic engine start function, causing exhaust gases to collect and
enter the vehicle and resulting in death or a serious health hazard.

Driving assist systems
To help enhance driving safety and performance, the following sys-
tems operate automatically in response to various driving situations.
Be aware, however, that these systems are supplementary and
should not be relied upon too heavily when operating the vehicle.
■ ABS (Anti-lock Brake System)
Helps to prevent wheel lock when the brakes are applied suddenly, or if
the brakes are applied while driving on a slippery road surface.
■Brake assist
Generates an increased level of braking force after the brake pedal is
depressed when the system detects a panic stop situation.
■VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) (if equipped)
Helps the driver to control skidding when swerving suddenly or turning
on slippery road surfaces.
■TRC (Traction Control) (if equipped)
Helps to maintain drive power and pr event the drive wheels from spin-
ning when starting the vehicle or accelerating on slippery roads.
■ Active Torque Control 4WD system (4WD models)
Automatically switches from front -wheel drive to four-wheel drive
(4WD) according to the driving conditions, helping to ensure reliable
handling and stability. Examples of conditions where the system will
switch to 4WD are when cornering going uphill, starting off or accelerat-
ing, and when the road surface is slippery due to snow, rain, etc.
■ EPS (Electric Power Steering)
Employs an electric motor to reduce the amount of effort needed to turn
the steering wheel.

■
Turning off both TRC and VSC systems
To turn the TRC and VSC systems off, press and hold for more than 3
seconds while the vehicle is stopped.
The “TRC OFF” indicator light and VSC OFF indicator light will come on.
Press again to turn the systems back on.
■ When the “TRC OFF” indicator light comes on even if the VSC OFF
switch has not been pressed
TRC cannot be operated. Contact any aut horized Toyota dealer or repairer,
or another duly qualified and equipped professional.
■ Sounds and vibrations caused by the ABS, brake assist, TRC and VSC
systems
●A sound may be heard from the engine compartment when the brake
pedal is depressed repeatedly, when the engine is started or just after the
vehicle begins to move. This sound does not indicate that a malfunction
has occurred in any of these systems.
● Any of the following conditions may occur when the above systems are
operating. None of these indicates that a malfunction has occurred.
• Vibrations may be felt through the vehicle body and steering.
• A motor sound may be heard after the vehicle comes to a stop.
• The brake pedal may pulsate slightly after the ABS is activated.
• The brake pedal may move down slightly after the ABS is activated.
■ EPS operation sound
When the steering wheel operates, a motor sound (whirring sound) may be
heard. This dose not indicate a malfunction.

Four-wheel drive lock (4WD models)
■Four-wheel drive lock mode can be operated when
Vehicles without smart entry & start system
The engine switch is in the “ON” position.
Vehicles with smart entry & start system
The “ENGINE START STOP” switch is in IGNITION ON mode.
■ Four-wheel drive lock mode
●Four-wheel drive lock mode is canceled when the brakes are applied to
ensure the ABS and VSC system operate effectively.
● Four-wheel drive lock mode is canceled when the vehicle speed exceeds
40 km/h (25 mph).
Four-wheel drive lock mode can be used when a large amount of
drive power needs to be applied to all the wheels, such as when the
vehicle gets stuck in mud and you need to free it.
Push the button.
The torque of the engine is dis-
tributed to the rear wheels to
the maximum extent possible
in accordance with driving con-
ditions.
Push the button again cancels
four-wheel drive lock mode
and returns the Active Torque
Control 4WD system to nor-
mal mode. (

3-1. Using the air conditioning system and defogger
URBAN CRUISER_OM_OM52F47E_(EE)
■ Air conditioning odors
●During use, various odors from inside and outside the vehicle may enter
into and accumulate in the air conditioning system. This may then cause
odor to be emitted from the vents.
● To reduce potential odors from occurring:
• It is recommended that the air conditi oning system be set to outside air
mode prior to turning the vehicle off.
• The start timing of the blower may be delayed for a short period of time immediately after the air conditioning system is started in automatic
mode.
CAUTION
■ To prevent the windshield from fogging up
Do not use during cool air operati on in extremely humid weather. The
difference between the temperature of the outside air and that of the wind-
shield can cause the outer surface of the windshield to fog up, blocking your
vision.
NOTICE
■ To prevent battery discharge
Do not leave the air conditioning system on longer than necessary when the
engine is stopped.

defoggers on.
CAUTION
■When the outside rear view mirror defoggers are on
Do not touch the outside surface of the rear view mirrors, as they can
become very hot and burn you.
