When the selector lever cannot be shifted from the “P” (PARK) position to anotherposition while the brake
pedal is pressed and
held down with the ignition switch at the “ON” position or the operation mode in ON,the battery may be flat or the shift-lock mech- anism may be malfunctioning. Immediately have your
vehicle checked by an
authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility
of your choice.
If you need to move the vehicle, shift the selector lever as follows. 1. Make sure the parking brake is fully applied.2. Stop the engine if it is running.
Set the selector lever in the gate to operate while the brake pedal is depressed. Set the selector lever in the gate to operate.

ing the selector lever
into a selector posi-
tion from the “N”
(NEUTRAL) position.
When beginning to drive, do not shift the selector lever from
the “N” (NEUTRAL)
position while pressing the acceleratorpedal. This will cause the vehicle to “jump” forward or backward.NOTE
To prevent mistakes in operating the lever, make sure you stop brie
fly at each position.
After operating, check
the position in the
multi-information display. If the brake pedal is not depressed and held, the shift-lock device activates to prevent the selector lever from being moved from the“P” (PARK) position. For a shift indicated by in the illustra- tion, depress the brake pedal before moving the selector lever. If you attempt to move the selector lever before
depressing the brake
pedal, the selector le
ver may be immovable.

Hill start assist (if so equipped) Features and controls 5-85
5
N00517600364
Your vehicle is equipped with power brakes for more braking force with less brake pedal effort.Your brakes are designed to operate at full capacity, even if the power assist is not being used.If the power assist is not being used, the effort needed to press the brake pedal is greater. If you should lose the power assist for somereason, the brakes will still work. If the power brake unit or either of the two brake hydraulic systems stops working prop-erly, the rest of the brake system will still work, but the vehicle will not slow down as quickly. You will know this ha
s happened if you find
you need to press the brake down farther, or harder when slowing down or stopping, or ifthe brake warning light and the warning dis- play in the multi-information display come on.
N00550700124
The disc brakes have an alarm that makes a metallic squeal when
the brake pads have
worn down enough to need service. If you hear this sound, have the brake pads replaced at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
N00562601097
The hill start assist make
s it easy to start off
on a steep uphill slope by preventing thevehicle from moving back
wards. It keeps the
braking force for about 2 second when you move your foot from the brake pedal to theaccelerator pedal.
CAUTION It is important not to drive the vehicle with your foot resting on the brake pedal whenbraking is not required. This practice canresult in very high brake temperatures, pre- mature lining wear, a
nd possible damage to
the brakes.
Power brakes
WA R N I N G Never coast downhill
with the engine OFF.
Keep the engine running whenever yourvehicle is in motion. If you turn off theengine while driving, the power brake booster will stop wo
rking and your brakes
will not work as well. If the power assist is lost or if either brake hydraulic system stops working properly, take your vehicle to
an authorized Mit-
subishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice immediately.
Brake pad wear alarm
WA R N I N G Driving with worn brake pads will make it harder to stop, and can cause an accident.
Hill start assist
(if so equipped)
CAUTION Do not overly rely on the hill start assist to prevent backwards movement of the vehicle.Under certain circumstan
ces, even when hill
start assist is activated, the vehicle may move backwards if the brake pedal is not suf-ficiently depressed, if the vehicle is heavily loaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery. The hill start assist is
not designed to keep
the vehicle stopped in place on uphill slopesfor more than 2 seconds. When facing uphill, do not rely on using the hill start assist to
maintain a stopped position
as an alternative to depressing the brake pedal.Doing so could cause an accident. Do not turn the ignition switch to the “OFF”, “LOCK” or “ACC” po
sition while the hill
start assist is operating. The hill start assist could stop operating,
which could result in
an accident.

Avoid hard braking and high-speed driv- ing. Stop the vehicl
e in a safe place.
Test the system by restarting the engine and driving at a speed of about 12 mph(20 km/h) or higher. If the warning light / display then remains off during driving, there is no abnormalcondition. However, if the warning light / display do not disappear, or if they come on againwhen the vehicle is driven, have the vehi- cle checked by an au

If there is a malfunction in the system, the warning light will come on and the warningdisplay will appear on the information screen in the multi information display. Under normal conditions, the warning lightcome on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ON, and goes off after the engine hasstarted.
N00559100147
The Active stability
control (ASC) takes
overall control of the
anti-lock braking sys-
tem, traction control function and skid control function to help maintain the vehicle’s controland traction. Please read
this section in con-
junction with the page on the anti-lock brak- ing system, traction control function and skidcontrol function. Anti-lock braking system

On slippery surfaces, the traction control function prevents the drive wheels from spin- ning excessive, thus helping the vehicle tostart moving from a stopp
ed condition.
It also
provides sufficient driv
ing force and steering
performance as the vehicle turns while press-ing the acceleration pedal.
N00559300019
The skid control function is designed to helpthe driver maintain control of the vehicle on slippery roads or during rapid steering
CAUTION If the warning display appears while the engine is running, have
the vehicle inspected
by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of
your choice as soon as
possible. It may become harder to turn thesteering wheel.
Active stability control (ASC)
CAUTION Do not over-rely on the ASC. Even the ASC cannot prevent the natural laws of physics from acting on the vehicle. This system, like any other system, has
limits and cannot help
you to maintain traction and control of the vehicle in all circumstances. Reckless driv- ing can lead to accident
s. It is the driver’s
responsibillty to drive carefully, This means taking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four
wheels. Otherwise, the
ASC may not work properly. Do not install any aftermarket limited slip differential (LSD) on your vehicle. The ASC may stop functioning properly.NOTE
An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa-tions. The sound is associated with checkingthe operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if you depress it. These do not
indicate a malfunc-
tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
When the ASC is acti
vated, you may feel a
vibration in the vehicl
e body or hear a whin-
ing sound from the engine compartment. This indicates that th
e system is operating
normally. It does not i
ndicate a malfunction.
When the anti-lock braking system warning light is illuminated, the ASC is not active.
Traction control function
CAUTION When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy road, be sure to install snow tires and drive the vehicle at moderate speeds.

maneuvers. It works by
controlling the engine
output and the brake on each wheel.
N00559401264
The ASC is automatically activated when theignition switch is turned to the “ON” posi- tion. You can deactivate
the system by press-
ing down the “ASC OFF” switch for 3seconds or longer. When the ASC is deactivated, the indica- tor will turn on. To reactivate the ASC, momentarily press the “ASC OFF” switch; the indicator is turned off.
N00559501223
NOTE
The skid control func
tion operates
at speeds
of about 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher.
ASC OFF switch
CAUTION For safety reasons, the “ASC OFF” switch should be operated when your vehicle isstopped. Be sure to keep the ASC on while driving in normal circumstances.NOTE
Using the “ASC OFF” switch turns off both the stability control f
unction and the traction
control function. When moving out of mud, sand or fresh snow, pressing the accelerator pedal may not allow the engine speed to increase. In suchsituations, temporarily turning off ASC with the “ASC OFF” switch will make it easier to move out your vehicle. If you continue to press the “ASC OFF” switch after the ASC is turned off, the “mis-taken operation
protection function” will
activate and
the ASC will turn back on.

-
ASC operation displa
y/ASC indicator
The display/indicator will blink when the ASC is operating.
-
ASC OFF indicator This indicator will turn on when the ASC is turned off with the “ASCOFF” switch.
CAUTION When display/indicator blinks, ASC is operating, which means th
at the road is slip-
pery or that your vehicle’s wheels are begin- ning to slip. If this happens, drive slower. If the temperature in the braking system con- tinues to increase due
to continuous brake
control on a slippery road surface, the indicator will blink. To prevent the brake system from overheating, the brake control of the traction control
function will be tem-
porarily suspended. Th
e engine control of
the traction control
function and normal
brake operation will not be affected. Park your vehicle in a safe place. When thetemperature in the braking system has come down, the indicator will be turned off and the traction control function will start operat- ing again.

Cruise control is an automatic speed control system that keeps a set speed. It can be acti- vated at speeds from about 25 mph(40 km/h). Cruise cont
rol does not work at
speeds below about 25 mph (40 km/h).
NOTE
The indicator may come on when you start the engine. This means that the battery voltage momentarily dropped when theengine was started. It
does not indicate a
malfunction, provided th
at the display goes
out immediately. When a spare tire has been put on your vehi- cle, the gripping ability of the tire will be lower, making it more
likely that the dis-

or “ACC” position or
the operation mode in ACC or OFF. Whentowing the vehicle with the rear wheels raised, keep the ignition switch in the “ACC” position or the operation mode in ACC.Refer to “Towing” on page 8-14.
Cruise control
CAUTION When you do not wish to drive at a set speed, turn off the cruise control for safety. Do not use cruise control when driving con- ditions will not allow
you to stay at the same
speed, such as in heavy traffic or on roadsthat are winding, icy, snow-covered, wet, slippery, on a steep downhill slope.NOTE
Cruise control may not
be able to keep your
speed on uphills or downhills. Your speed may decr
ease on a steep uphill.
You may use the accelerator pedal if youwant to stay at your set speed. Your speed may increase to more than the set speed on a steep downhill. You have to usethe brake to control your speed. As a result, the set speed driving is deactivated.
