Clutch pedal operation (if so equipped) 5-56 Features and controls
5
The turbocharger increases engine power by pushing large amounts of air into the engine’s cylinders. The finned parts inside the turbo-charger turn at extremely high speeds and are subjected to extremely high temperatures. They are lubricated by engine oil and cooledby engine oil and coolan
t. If the engine oil is
not replaced at the specified intervals, the bearings may seize or emit abnormal noise.
N00537700042
Observe the following cautions when usingthe clutch pedal. Not observing them couldresult in rapid clutch wear or in clutch dam- age. Press the clutch pedal all the way down while shifting gears. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down before starting the engine. Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal.
On hills and other gradients, do not hold the vehicle in position by slipping the clutch without using the brakes. Make sure the space under the clutch pedal is free of objects that could obstruct the pedal.
Do not stop the engine immediately after high-speed or uphill driv
ing. First allow the
engine to idle to give the turbocharger a chance to cool down. Engine oil must be properly maintained to avoid engine and/or turbocharger damage. To better protect your engine and turbo-charger, use fully synthetic engine oil.

CAUTION If the clutch is engaged suddenly while the engine revolution is high, an extremely large load will be applied instantaneously to the power train, possibly leading to the breakageof that component. Please ensure, therefore, that the clutch pedal is always applied in a slow yet firm manner.NOTE
Your vehicle has a special feature to reduce the impact into the power train and to reduce the load of the clutch disk; the engine revolu-tion doesn’t rise more than around 5,500 rpm while the vehicle is stationary and the clutch pedal has been depressed. If either of the following occurs, the clutch should be inspected by a Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice: • The pedal stroke until clutch disengage- ment suddenly increases. • The engine revs when the clutch is not dis- engaged.

S-AWC (Super-All Wheel Control)
Features and controls 5-71
5
N00541300036
S-AWC is an integrated vehicle dynamics control system that helps enhance drivingperformance, cornering performance, and vehicle stability over a wide range of driving conditions through integrated management ofthe ACD, the AYC, the anti-lock braking sys- tem, and the active stability control (ASC).
Please read this section in conjunction with the following sections. ACD (Active center differential system)
P.5-71AYC (Active yaw control system)
P.5-72
Anti-lock braking system
P.5-74
Active stability control (ASC)
P.5-76
N00541400011
The ACD is a system
that improves accelera-
tion performance and straight-ahead stabilityby regulating the differential limiting action
CAUTION Always use tires of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear dif- ferences. Using tires that differ in size, type, brands or the degree of wear, will increase the differential oil temperature, resulting inpossible damage to the driving system. Fur- ther, the drive train will be subjected to excessive loading, possibly leading to oilleakage, component seizure, or other serious problems.
To w i n g
CAUTION Do not tow all-wheel dr
ive vehicles with the
front or rear wheels on the ground (Type A or Type B) as illustrated. This could result in damage to the drivetrain, or unstable towing. If you tow all-wheel drive vehicles, use TypeC or Type D equipment.
Jacking up all-wheel drive vehi- cles
WA R N I N G Do not start or run the engine while the vehicle is on the jack. The jack could slip out of position andresult in an accident.
S-AWC (Super-All Wheel Control)
CAUTION Do not over-rely on the S-AWC. Even the S- AWC cannot prevent the natural laws ofphysics from acting on the vehicle. This sys- tem, like any other system, has limits and cannot help you to maintain traction and con-trol of the vehicle in all circumstances. Reck- less driving can lead to accidents. It is the driver’s responsibility to drive carefully. This means taking into account the traffic, road and environmental conditions. Be sure to use tires that are the same speci- fied size, type, and brand, and have no differ- ence in the amount of wear for all fourwheels. Otherwise,
the S-AWC may not
work properly.

Air cleaner filter 9-8 Vehicle care and maintenance
9
The radiator cap must be tight sealed to pre- vent losing coolant which may result in engine damage. Only use a Genuine Mitsubi-shi Parts radiator cap, or an approved equiva- lent. Do not overfill the reserve tank.
Your vehicle uses a special radiator cap that stays sealed and lets the coolant flow from the reserve tank back to the radiator when the engine cools down. If you needto change the cap, use the exact same kind. Check the coolant freeze point in the radi- ator with the proper gauge, and only when it is safe. If you add antifreeze, the con- tents of the reserve tank must be protectedagainst freezing. Keep the front of the radiator and con- denser clean. If the temperature of the engine coolant does not rise after the engine is warmed- up, take your vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice to have the thermostat checked, and replaced if necessary.

The air cleaner filter w
ill get dirty and dusty
from use and not filter properly. Replace it with a new filter using the schedule in the“WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL”.
1. Unclamp and take out the air cleaner fil- ter. 2. Install the air cleaner filter and put the cover back on in its original position.
Do not use water to adjust the concentration of coolant. Do not top off the tank with plain water only. Water by itself boils at a lower temperatureand does not stop rust or freezing. If the water freezes, it will damage your cooling system. Do not use tapwater. It can causecorrosion and rust.
Radiator cap
WA R N I N G Wait for the engine to cool down before opening the radiator cap. Otherwise hotsteam or boiling coolant could spray up from the radiator and scald you.
Points to remember
CAUTION

2 to 6 PSI from the cold inflation pressure. Do not let air out of the tires to get back to the specified cold pressure, or your tire pressure will be too low.Check your tires each time you refuel. If one tire looks lower than the others, check the pressure for all of them. You should also take the following safety pre- cautions: Keep your tires inflated to the recom- mended pressures. (See the tire and load-ing information placard attached to thedriver’s door sill.) Stay within the recommended load limits. Make sure that the weight of any load in your vehicle is evenly distributed. Drive at safe speeds. After filling your tires to the correct pres- sure, check them for damage and air leaks. Be sure to reinstall the caps on the valve stems.
N00939600397
N00939700037
The following maintenance steps are recom- mended: Check tire pressures regularly.
Have regular maintenance done on the wheel balance and front and rear suspen- sion alignment. Rotate your tires regularly as described in the “Tire rotation” section on page 9-18.
N00939800201
The standard-equipment tires use a high-gripcompound that gives superior grip. However, they wear more quickly than typi- cal passenger-car tires. Tread wear indicators are built into the origi- nal equipment tires on your vehicle to help you know when your tire
s should be replaced.
Many states have laws requiring that you replace your tires at this point.
Replacing tires and wheels
CAUTION Avoid using different size tires and wheels from the ones listed, and avoid the com- bined use of different types of tires and wheels. Using different size or type tires andwheels may affect driving safety. Refer to “Tires and wheels” on page 11-5.
Always use tires of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear dif- ferences. Using tires that differ in size, type, brand or the degree of wear, will increase the differential oil temperature, resulting in pos-sible damage to the driving system. Further, the drive train will be
subjected to excessive
loading, possibly leading to oil leakage, component seizure, or other serious prob- lems. Even if a wheel has the same rim size and offset as the specified type of wheel, its shape may prevent it from being fitted cor-rectly. Consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice before using wheels that you have. As your vehicle is equipped with a tire pres- sure monitoring system, use only Mitsubishigenuine wheels. Other wheels do not permit correct installa- tion of tire inflation pressure sensors and cancause air leakage and sensor failure, which would not be covered by your vehicle’s war- ranty.

N00945700016
To protect your vehicle’s finish, wash it often and thoroughly. If desired, you may wax your vehicle using a nonabrasive automobile wax.
N00945800017
Industrial pollution, road tar, bird droppings, tree sap, insect remains, sea water and otherforeign matters can damage the finish on your vehicle. Generally, the longer any foreign materialstays on the finish, the worse the damage. Wash your vehicle as soon as possible when- ever the finish gets soiled.
N00945900601
Chemicals contained in the dirt and dustpicked up from air, rain, snow or road sur-faces can damage the paint and body of your vehicle if left on. Frequent washing and waxing is the best wayto protect your vehicle from this damage. Do not wash the vehicle in direct sunlight. Park the vehicle in the shade and spray it withwater to remove dust. Next, using plenty ofclean water and a car washing mitt or sponge, wash the vehicle from top to bottom. Use a mild car washing soap if necessary.Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry with a cham- ois or soft cloth. After washing the vehicle, carefully clean the joints and flanges of thedoors, hood, etc., where dirt is likely to remain.
The genuine leather surface may harden and shrink if it is exposed to the direct sunlight for long hours. When your vehicle is parked, place it in the shade as much as possible. When the temperature of the vehicle interior rises in summer, vinyl products left on the genuine leather seat may deteriorate andstick to the seat.
Cleaning the outside of your vehicle Foreign material
NOTE
Wa s h i n g
CAUTION When washing the underside of your vehicle or the wheels, wear a pair of gloves to pro-tect your hands. This vehicle is equipped with a high perfor- mance brakes. Wash the wheels frequently to remove brake dust. The dust will be difficultto remove if left on the wheels for too long.
If your vehicle has rain sensor wipers, place the wiper switch lever in the “OFF” position to deactivate the rain sensor before washing the vehicle. Otherwise, the wipers will oper- ate in the presence of water spray on thewindshield and become damaged as a result. Never spray or splash water on the electrical parts in the engine compartment. This may damage them. Be careful also when washing the underbody. Do not spray water into theengine compartment. Avoid automatic car washers that use rotat- ing brushes. These brushes may scratch the paint surface and make it dull. Scratches are more noticeable on darker col-ored vehicles. Some hot water washing equipment uses high pressure and heat to clean your vehicle. This heated water may damage your vehi- cle’s resin parts. It can flood the interior ofthe vehicle. Therefore, be sure of the follow- ing:• Keep the washing nozzle at least 20 inches(50 cm) away from the vehicle body.• When washing around the door glass, holdthe nozzle at a distance of more than 20 inches (50 cm) and at
right angles to the
glass surface. CAUTION
