WARNING
Batteries contain toxic and corrosive
substances. If batteries are swallowed, it can
result in severe health problems. There is a
risk of fatal injury.
Keep batteries out of the reach of children. If
a battery is swallowed, seek medical attention
immediately.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have
the batteries replaced at a qualified specialist
workshop.
The SmartKey batteries contain perchlorate
material, which may require special handling
and regard for the environment. National
guidelines must be observed during disposal.

Checking the battery X
Press the 000Bor000C button.
The battery is working properly if battery
check lamp 0002lights up briefly.
The battery is discharged if battery check
lamp 0002does not light up briefly.
X Change the battery (Y page 83).
i If the SmartKey battery is checked within
the signal reception range of the vehicle,
pressing the 000Bor000C button:
R locks or
R unlocks the vehicle i
You can get a battery at any qualified
specialist workshop.
Replacing the battery You require a CR 2025 3 V cell battery.

Repeatedly tap the SmartKey against your
palm until battery 0023falls out.
X Inser tthe new battery with the positive
terminal facing upwards. Use a lint-free
cloth to do so.
X Make sure that the surface of the battery is
free of lint, grease and other contaminants.
X Insert the front tabs of battery
compartment cover 0002into the housing
first and then press to close it.
X Insert mechanical key 0003into the
SmartKey.
X Check the function of all SmartKey buttons
on the vehicle. 84

Problems with the SmartKey

unlock the vehicle
using the SmartKey. The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged.

Try again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control
function of the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the
driver's door handle from close range and press the 000Cor
000B button.
If this does not work:
X Check the SmartKey battery (Y page 83) and replace it if
necessary (Y page 83).
X Lock (Y page 88) or unlock (Y page 88) the vehicle using
the mechanical key. The SmartKey is faulty.
X
Lock (Y page 88) or unlock (Y page 88) the vehicle using
the mechanical key.
X Have the SmartKey checked at a qualified specialist workshop. You can no longer lock
or unlock the vehicle
using KEYLESS-GO. There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.
X Lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the 000Cor000B button. There is a malfunction with KEYLESS-GO.
X Lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the 000Cor000B button.
X Have KEYLESS-GO checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
If this does not work:
X Check the SmartKey battery (Y page 83) and replace it if
necessary (Y page 83).
X Lock (Y page 88) or unlock (Y page 88) the vehicle using
the mechanical key. You have lost a
SmartKey. X
Have the SmartKey deactivated at a qualified specialist
workshop.
X Report the loss immediately to the vehicle insurers.

X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. The engine cannot be
started using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey is in
the vehicle. Ad
oor is open. Therefore, the SmartKey cannot be detected as
easily.
X Close the door and try to start the vehicle again. There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.

Start your vehicle with the SmartKey in the ignition lock. Doors

If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle,
they could:
R open the doors, thus endangering other
people or road users.
R get out and disrupt traffic.
R operate the vehicle's equipment.
Additionally, children could set the vehicle in
motion if, for example, they:
R release the parking brake.
R shift the automatic transmission out of
parking position P.
R starting the engine.
There is a risk of an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children or animals unattended in the
vehicle. Always keep the SmartKey out of
reach of children. G
WARNING
If persons, particularly children are subjected
to prolonged exposure to extreme heat or
cold, there is a risk of injury, possibly even
fatal. Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle. G
WARNING
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
not secured sufficiently, they could slip, tip
over or be flung around and thereby hit vehicle
occupants. There is a risk of injury,
particularly in the event of sudden braking or
a sudden change in direction.
Always store objects so that they cannot be
flung around. Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tipping before the
journey.
You should preferably place luggage or loads
in the cargo compartment. Observe the
loading guidelines (Y page 332).86
DoorsOpening and closing
Unlocking and opening doors from
the inside
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked. You can only open
the rear doors from inside the vehicle if they
are not secured by the child-proof locks
(Y page 66).
If the vehicle has been locked with the
SmartKey or with KEYLESS-GO, opening a
door from the inside will trigger the anti-theft
alarm system. Switch off the alarm
(Y page 76). X
Front door: pull door handle 0003.
If the door is locked, locking knob 0002pops
up. The door is unlocked and can be
opened.
X Rear door: pull up locking knob 0002on the
relevan trear door.
The rear door is unlocked and can be
opened. Centrally locking and unlocking the
vehicle from the inside
You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle
from the inside. The buttons are located on
both fron tdoors. 0002
To unlock

If the front-passenger door is closed, the
vehicle locks.
Meanwhile, the fuel filler flap will not be
locked or unlocked.
You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally from
the inside if the vehicle has been locked with
the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO.
You can open a front door from inside the
vehicle even if it has been locked.
If the vehicle has been locked using the
locking button for the central locking, or has
been locked automatically, and a door is
opened from the inside:
R the vehicle will be fully unlocked if it had
previously been fully unlocked
R only the door which has been opened form
the inside is unlocked if only the driver's
door had been previously unlocked Doors

do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has
already been selected.
The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignitio nis switched on and the wheels are
turning.
You could therefore be locked out if:
R the vehicle is being pushed.
R the vehicle is being towed.
R the vehicle is on a roller dynamometer.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board
computer (Y page 276). Powerc
losing
Power closing pulls the doors and trunk lid
into their locks automatically even if they are
only partly closed. X
To power-close adoor: push the door into
the lock up to the first detent position.
Power closing will pull the door fully closed.
X To power-close the tailgate: lightly press
the tailgate downwards.
Power closing will pull the tailgate fully
closed. Unlocking the driver's door
(mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unloc kand
open the driver's door, the anti-thef talarm
system will be triggered ( Ypage 76).
X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 82).
X Insert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go. 0005
To unlock
X Turn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
to position 0005.
The door is unlocked.
X Turn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey. Locking the vehicle (mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
SmartKey, use the mechanical key. 88

X Close the front-passenger door, the rear
doors and the tailgate.

front-passenger door and the rear doors

X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 82).
X Insert the mechanical key into the lock of

To lock
X Turn the mechanical key clockwise as far
as it will go to position 0005.
X Turn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
X Make sure that the doors and the tailgate
are locked.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
i If you lock the vehicle as described above,
the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-
theft alarm system is not armed. Cargo compartment

gases such as carbon monoxide. If the tailgate
is open when the engine is running,
particularly if the vehicle is moving, exhaust
fumes could enter the passenger
compartment. There is a risk of poisoning.
Turn off the engine before opening the
tailgate. Never drive with the tailgate open. G

rear when opened. Therefore, make sure
that there is sufficient clearance above and
behind the tailgate.

Do not leave the SmartKey in the cargo
compartment. You could otherwise lock
yourself out.
Vehicles without the EASY-PACK
tailgate: the tailgate can be:
R opened and closed manually from outside
R unlocked from inside with the emergency

For vehicles with the EASY-PACK tailgate
you can:
R
close the tailgate manually from outside
R open and close the tailgate automatically
from outside
R open and close the tailgate automatically
from inside
R unlock the tailgate from inside with the
emergency release
R limit the opening angle of the tailgate Tailgate reversing feature
The tailgate is equipped with an automatic
reversing feature. It reacts if a solid object
obstructs or restricts the tailgate during the
closing procedure. The tailgate opens again
automatically. The automatic reversing
feature is only an aid and is no tasubstitute
for your attention when closing the tailgate. G
WARNING
The reversing feature does not react:
R to soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small
fingers
R over the last 1/3 in (8 mm) of the closing
movement
This means that the reversing feature cannot
prevent someone being trapped in these
situations. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the closing procedure.
If somebody becomes trapped:
R press the 0004button on the SmartKey, or
R press the remote operating switch on the
driver’s door, or
R press the closing or locking button on the
tailgate, or
R pull the handle on the tailgate Opening/closing manually from
outside
Opening X
Press the 000Cbutton on the SmartKey.
X Pull handle 0002.
X Raise the tailgate.
Vehicles with the EASY-PACK tailgate: if
you pull handle 0002and then release it, the
tailgate opens automatically.
Closing X
Pull the tailgate down using recess 0002.
X Allow the tailgate to drop into the lock.
X Lock the vehicle if necessary with
the 000B button on the SmartKey or with
KEYLESS-GO.
i If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
cargo compartment, the tailgate will not
