The exterior lighting (except the parking/
standinglamps) switches off automatically if
you:
Rremove the SmartKey from the ignition lock
Ropen the driver's door with the SmartKey
in position0.
Automatic headlampmode
GWARNING
When the light switch is set to\r,the low-
beam headlamps may not be switched on
automatically if there is fog, snow or other
causes of poor visibility due to the weather
conditions such as spray. There isarisk of an
accident.
In such situations, turn the light switch to
.
The automatic headlamp feature is only an
aid. The driver is responsible for the vehicle's
lighting at all times.

Low-beam/high-beam headlamps
\ris the favored light switch setting. The
light setting is automatically selected
accordingtothe brightness of the ambient
light (exception: poor visibility due to weather
conditions such as fog, snow or spray):
RSmartKey in position1in the ignition lock:
the parking lamps are switched on or off
automatically depending on the brightness
of the ambient light.
RWith the engine running: if you have
activated the daytime runninglamps
function via the on-board computer,the
daytime runninglamps or the low-beam
headlamps and parking lamps are switched
on or off automatically depending on the
brightness of the ambient light.
XTo switch on automatic headlamp
mode:turn the light switch to\r.
Only for Canada:
The daytime runninglamps improve the
visibility of your vehicle during the day. The
daytime runninglamps function is required by
law in Canada. It cannot therefore be
deactivated.
When the engine is runningand the vehicle is
stationary: if you move the selector lever from
adrive position toP,the daytime running
lamps/low-beam headlamps go out after
three minutes.
When the engine is running, the vehicle is
stationary and in high ambient light: if you
turn the light switch to,the daytime
runninglamps and parking lamps switch on.
If the engine is runningand you turn the light
switch to,the manual settings take
precedenceover the daytime runninglamps.
USA only:
The daytime runninglamps improve the
visibility of your vehicle during the day. To do
this, the daytime runninglamps function must
be switched on using the on-board computer
(Ypage 230).

Even if the light sensor does not detect that
it is dark,the parking lamps and low-beam
headlamps switchonwhen the ignition is
switched on and the light switchisset to the
position. This isaparticularly useful
function in the eventofrain and fog.
XTo switch on thelow-beam headlamps:
turnthe SmartKey in the ignition lock to
position2or start the engine.
XTurn the light switchto.
The greenindicator lamp in the
instrumentcluster lightsup.
Parking lamps
!If the battery has been excessively
discharged, the parking lamps or standing
lamps are automatically switched off to
enable the nextengine start. Alwayspark
your vehiclesafelyand sufficiently lit
according to legalstandards.Avoid the
continuoususe of theparking lamps
for severalhours.Ifpossible, switch on the
\nright or theleft standinglamp.

You can use this function to set the
headlamps to change betweenlow beam and
high beam automatically. The system
recognizes vehicles with their lights on, either
approaching from the opposite direction or
traveling in front of your vehicle, and
consequently switches the headlamps from
high beam to low beam.
The system automatically adapts the low-
beam headlamp range depending on the
distance to the other vehicle. Once the
system no longer detectsany other vehicles,
it reactivates the high-beam headlamps.
The system's optical sensor is located behind
the windshield near the overhead control
panel.

XPress the combination switch beyond the
pressure point in the direction of
arrow.
Theindicator lamp in the
multifunction display lights up if it is dark
and the light sensor activates the low-beam
headlamps.
If you are driving at speeds above
approximately 28 mph (45 km/h):
The headlamp range is set automatically
depending on the distance between the
vehicle and other road users.
If you are driving at speeds above
approximately 35 mph (55 km/h) and no
other road users have been detected:
The high-beam headlamps are switched on
automatically. Theindicator lamp in
the instrument cluster also lights up.
If you are driving at speeds below
approximately 30 mph (45 km/h) or other
road users have been detected or the roads
are adequately lit:
The high-beam headlamps are switched off
automatically. Theindicator lamp in
the instrument cluster goes out. The
indicator lamp in the multifunction display
remains lit.
XTo switch off:move the combination
switch back to its normal position or move
the light switch to another position.
Theindicator lamp in the instrument
cluster goes out.
Headlamps fogged up on the inside
The headlamps may fog up on the inside if
there is high atmospheric humidity.
XSwitch on the light and drive off.
The level of moisture diminishes,
depending on the length of the journey and
the weather conditions (humidity and
temperature).
If the level of moisture does not diminish:
XHave the headlamps checked ataqualified
specialist workshop.

zone automatic climate control.

ROnly use the "Windshield defrosting"
function briefly until the windshieldisclear
again.
ROnly use air-recirculation mode briefly,e.g.
if there are unpleasant outside odors or
when inatunnel. The windows could
otherwise fog up, since no fresh air is drawn
into the vehicle in air-recirculation mode.
RUse the ZONE function to adopt the
temperature settings on the driver's side

Automatic climate control
The 3-zone automatic climate control is only
available on vehicles for Canada.
The following contains instructions and
recommendations to enable you to get the
most out of your automatic climate control.
RActivate climate control using the\rand
buttons. The indicatorlamps above
the\randbuttons light up.
RIn automatic mode, you can also use the
buttontosetaclimate mode
(FOCUS/MEDIUM/DIFFUSE). The
MEDIUM levelisrecommended.
RSet thetemperaturetof72‡(22 †).
ROnly use the"Windshield defrosting"
function briefly until thewindshield is clear
again.
ROnly use air-recirculation modebriefly, e.g.
if there are unpleasantoutside odorsor
when inatunnel. The windows could
otherwise fog up, since no fresh air is drawn
intothevehicleinair-recirculation mode.
RUse theZONEfunction to adopt the
temperature settingsonthedriver's side

RUse the residual heat function if you want
to heat or ventilate the vehicle interior
when the ignition is switched off. The
residual heat function can only be activated
or deactivated with the ignition switched
off.
RVehicles with COMAND Multimedia-
System:if you change the settings of the
climate control system, the climate status
displayappears for approximately three
seconds at the bottom of the screen in the
COMAND display. See also the separate
COMAND operating instructions. You will
see the current settings of the various
climate control functions.
ECO start/stop function
During automatic engine switch-off,the ECO
start/stop function only operates at a
reduced capacity. If you require the full
climate control output, you can switch off the
ECO start/stop function by pressing the ECO
button (Ypage 152).

When the climate control is switched off, the
air supply and air circulation are also
switched off. The windows could fog up.
Therefore, switch off climate control only
briefly

ignition lock (Ypage 147).
XTo switch on:press the\rbutton on
the control panel for the climate control.

restored.

Activating/deactivating cooling with
air dehumidification
Pointstoobserve beforeuse
If you deactivatethe"Cooling withair-
dehumidification"function,theair inside the
vehiclewill notbecooled. The air inside the
vehicle will also not be dehumidified. The
windows can fog up more quickly. Therefore,
deactivatethe cooling with air-
dehumidification function only briefly.
The cooling with air dehumidification function
is only available when the engineisrunning.
The air inside the vehicle is cooled and
dehumidified according to the temperature
selected.
Condensation may drip from the underside of
the vehicle when it is in cooling mode. This is
normal and notasign that thereisa
malfunction.
Activating/deactivating
XTo activate:press thebutton.
The indicator lamp in thebutton lights
up.
iWhen the "Cooling with air
dehumidification"function is activated,
one of the indicator lamps on the auxiliary
heating button will light up on vehicles with
auxiliary heating.
XTo deactivate:press thebutton.
The indicator lamp in thebutton goes
out. The "Cooling with air dehumidification"
function hasadelayed switch-off feature.

Problems with the "Cooling with air dehumidification" function

Setting climate control to automatic
Points to observe before use
In automatic mode, the set temperature is
maintained automatically ataconstant level.
The system automatically regulates the
temperature of the dispensed air, the airflow
and the air distribution.
The automatic mode functions optimally
when the "Cooling with air dehumidification"
function is activated. If necessary, cooling
with air dehumidification can be deactivated.
If you deactivate the "Cooling with air-
dehumidification" function, the air inside the
vehicle will not be cooled. The air inside the
vehicle will also not be dehumidified. The
windows can fog up more quickly. Therefore,
deactivate the cooling with air-
dehumidification function only briefly.
Activating/switching
XTurn the SmartKey to position2in the
ignition lock (Ypage 147).
XSet the desired temperature.
XTo activate:press the\rbutton.
The indicator lamp in the\rbutton lights
up. Automatic air distribution and airflow
are activated.
i3-zone automatic climate control: when
automatic mode is activated, you can
selectaclimate mode (Ypage 137).
XTo switch to manualmode:press the
button.
or
XPress theorbutton.
The indicator lamp in the\rbutton goes
out.
Adjusting the climate mode settings
The "Set climate mode" function is only
available with 3-zone automatic climate
control.
You can select the following climate mode
settings in automatic mode:
FOCUS high airflow that is set slightly
cooler
MEDIUM medium airflow, standard setting
DIFFUSE low airflow that is set slightly
warmer and with less draft
XTurn the SmartKey to position2in the
ignition lock (Ypage 147).
XPress the\rbutton.
XPress thebutton repeatedly until the
desired climate mode appears in the
display.
