overvoltage or undervoltage.
XRemove the cause for the overvoltage or undervoltage, e.g. by
charging the battery or restarting the engine.
XEngage or release the electric parking brake.
If it remains impossible to apply or release the electric parking
brake:
XSwitch off the ignition and turn it back on.
XEngage or release the electric parking brake.
If the electric parking brake still cannot be released:
XConsult a qualified specialist workshop.
The display message is only shown while the vehicle is in motion.

message may appear in the multifunction display.

Do not start the vehicleusing a rapid charging device. If your vehicle's battery is discharged,
the engine can be jump-started from another vehicle or from a second battery using jumper
cables. Observe the following points:
RThe battery is not accessible in all vehicles. If the other vehicle's battery is not accessible,
jump-start the vehicle using a second battery orajump-starting device.
RYou may only jump-start the vehicle when the engine and exhaust system are cold.
RDo not start the engine if the battery is frozen. Let the battery thaw first.
ROnly jump-start from batteries with a 12 V voltage rating.
ROnly use jumper cables which have a sufficientcross-section and insulated terminal clamps.
RIf the battery is fully discharged, leave the battery that is being used to jump-start connected
for a few minutes before attempting to start. This charges the battery slightly.
RMake sure that the two vehicles do not touch.
Make sure that:
Rthe jumper cables are not damaged.
Rbare parts of the terminal clamp do not come into contact with other metal parts while the
jumper cables are connected to the battery.
Rthe jumper cables cannot come into contact with parts which can move when the engine
is running, such as the V-belt pulley or the fan.
XSecure the vehicle by applying the electric parking brake.
XShift the transmission to positionP.
XTurn the SmartKey to position0in the ignition lock and remove it.
XSwitch off all electrical consumers, e.g. rear window defroster, lighting, etc.
XOpen the hood.

Towing the vehicle with the front axle
raised
Only vehicles without 4MATIC can be
towed with the front axle raised.
!Vehicles with 4MATIC must not be towed
with either the front or the rearaxle raised,
as doing so will damage the transmission.
Vehicles with 4MATIC may either be towed
away with both axles on the ground or be
loaded up and transported.
!The ignition must be switched off if the
vehicle is being towed with the front axle
raised.Otherwise, ESP®may intervene and
damage the brake system.
XTurn the SmartKey to position2in the
ignition lock.
XWhen the vehicle is stationary, depress the
brake pedal and keep it depressed.
XShift the automatic transmission to
positionP.
XRelease the brake pedal.
XRelease the electric parking brake.
XSwitch off the automatic locking
(Ypage 208).
XSwitch on the hazard warning lamps
(Ypage 107).
XTurn the SmartKey to position0in the
ignition lock and leave the SmartKey in the
ignition lock.
Observe the important safety notes when
towing your vehicle with the front axle raised
(Ypage 305).
Towingavehicle with both axles on
the ground
iIn orderto signal a change of direction
when towing with the hazard warning lamps
switched on, use the combination switch as
usual.Inthis case, only the indicator lamps
for the direction of travel flash. After
resetting the combination switch, the
hazard warning lamp starts flashing again.
The automatic transmission automatically
shifts to positionPwhen you open the driver's
or front-passenger door or when you remove
the SmartKey from the ignition lock. In order
to ensure that the automatic transmission
stays in positionNwhen towing the vehicle,
you must observe the following points:
XMake sure that the vehicle is stationary.
XTurn the SmartKey to position2in the
ignition lock.
XDepress and hold the brake pedal.
XShift the automatic transmission to
positionN.
XLeave the SmartKey in position2in the
ignition lock.
XRelease the brake pedal.
XRelease the electric parking brake.
XSwitch on the hazard warning lamps
(Ypage 107).
It is important that you observe the safety
instructions when towing away your vehicle
(Ypage 305).
Transporting the vehicle
!You may only secure the vehicle by the
wheels, not by parts of the vehicle such as
axle or steering components. Otherwise,
the vehicle could be damaged.
XTurn the SmartKey to position2in the
ignition lock.
XShift the transmission to positionN.
As soon as the vehicle has been loaded:
XPrevent the vehicle from rolling away by
applying the electric parking brake.
XShift the transmission to positionP.
XTurn the SmartKey to position0in the
ignition lock and remove it.
XSecure the vehicle.
The towing eye can be used to pull the vehicle
onto a trailer or transporter for transporting
purposes.
