Fault indications
System failure is indicated by the
áwarning light light-
ing up in the in strument panel together with a dedicated
message appearing in the reconfigurable multifunction di s-
play ; see “Ins trument panel warning light s” chapter.
IMPORTANT The Hill Holder system is not a parking
brake; therefore, never leave the vehicle without having
engaged the handbrake, turned the engine off engaged the
firs t gear.
The Advanced ESP system continues to op-
erate if the space-saver wheel is fitted. Al-
ways remember that the space-saver wheel,
being smaller than the original wheel provides less
grip.
For the correct operation of the Advanced ESP and
ASR systems, the tyres must absolutely be the same
make and type on all wheels, in perfect conditions
and, above all, of the type, make and size speci-
fied.
HILL HOLDER S YSTEM
This is an integral part of the Advanced E SP system and
automaticall y cuts in in the following condition s:
❍ uphill: car at a s tandstill on a road with a gradient
higher than 5%, engine running, clutch and brake ped-
al pressed, gearbox in neutral or engaged gear other
than revers e.
❍ downhill: car at a stands till on a road with a gradient
higher than 5%, engine running, clutch and brake ped-
al pressed and revers e gear engaged.
During take off the Advanced E SP system control unit
maintains the braking pressure at the wheel s until the en-
gine torque required for departure i s reached or for a max-
imum of 2 seconds , allowing your right foot to be moved
eas ily from the brake pedal to the accelerator.
When two s econds have elaps ed, without starting, the sys-
tem is automaticall y deactivated, graduall y releas ing the
braking pressure. During thi s releas e stage it is possible to
hear a ty pical mechanical brake r
elea se nois e, indicating
the imminent move of the car.

TTCSYSTEM (Electronic self-lockin g differential)
THIS IS a system, which i s an integral part of the AS R,
that intervenes on entering bends giving drive torque to
the outer wheel and braking the inner wheel.
In this way the effect of a self-locking differential is s im-
ulated, increasing the sportine ss of the car and improv-
ing cornering. ABS
This system, which is an integral part of the braking sys-
tem, prevents one or more wheel s from locking and slip-
ping in all road surface conditions , irrespective of the in-
tens ity of the braking action, en suring that the vehicle can
be controlled even during emergenc y braking.
The EBD system (Electronic Braking Force Di stribution)
completes the system allowing the brake force to be di s-
tributed between the front and rear wheel s.
IMPORTANT To get the maximum efficienc y of the brak-
ing system, a bedding-in period of about 500 km i s need-
ed: during thi s period it is better to avoid sharp, r
epeat-
ed and prolonged braking.

System intervention
The driver can feel that the ABS has come into action be-
caus e the brake pedal pul sates s lightly and the system gets
nois ier: this means that the car s peed should be changed
to suit the ty pe of road surface.
When the ABS cuts in and you feel the brake
pedal pulsating, do not raise your foot, but
keep it pressed; in doing so you will stop in
the shortest amount of space possible depending on
the current road conditions.
If the ABS cuts in, it means that the grip be-
tween the tyre and the road surface is close
to its limit: you must slow down to match the
speed to the road grip available.
The ABS make the best use of the available
grip but cannot increase it. You should al-
ways drive carefully on slippery surfaces and
avoid any unnecessary risks.

The following conditions ma y influence the performance
of the parking a ssistance system:
❍ Reduced sens or sens itivity and a reduction in the park-
ing assi stance system performance could be due to the
pres ence on the s urface of the s ensor of:
ice, snow, mud, thick paint.
❍ The sensor may detect a non-existent obstacle (echo
interference) due to mechanical interference s, for ex-
ample when was hing the vehicle, rain ( strong wind),
hail.
❍ The indications s ent b y the s ensor can als o be altered
b y the pres ence of ultras ound devices (e.g. pneumat-
ic brake systems or pneumatic drill s) near the car.
❍ The performance of the parking assi stance system could
be affected by the position of the s ensors, e.g. by alter-
ing attitude (due to wear of shock abs orbers and sus-
pens ion) or by changing ty res, overloading the car or set-
ting special attitudes that r
equire the car to be lowered.
Parking manoeuvres, however, are always
the driver’s responsibility. While carrying out
these manoeuvres, always make sure that no
people (especially children) or animals are in the
area concerned. Parking sensors are designed to as-
sist drivers: anyway, you must always pay the ut-
most attention during potentially dangerous ma-
noeuvres, even when these are carried out at a low
speed.

IMPORTANT The SEARCH stage in the system logic is
deactivated after about 10 min s if a s uitable parking s pace
i s not identified.
❍ Identification: if the system identifies a free parking
s pace that is a suitable size for the vehicle, it s ignals its
pres ence and indicates the actions required for starting the
manoeuvre.
❍ Manoeuvre : the driver is asked to engage rever se gear
and releas e the steering wheel and manage the accelera-
tor, brake and clutch (in ca se of manual gearbox) or ac-
celerator and brake (in ca se of automatic tran smission).
During the rever se parking manoeuvre, the system man-
ages the s teering wheel automaticall y.
It sugges ts that the manoeuvre be concluded in revers e
gear (if the condition s permit) when the continuou s s ound
of the buzzer for the rear s ensors is hear
d.
IMPORTANT The MANOEUVRE stage in the system log-
ic is deactivated after about 3 min s if the parking ma-
noeuvre ha s not been completed. ❍
Manoeuvre end: if the parking s pace is s ufficient, the
parking manoeuvre i s completed by the system in a s in-
gle movement; the further intervention of the driver i s not
required to po sition the vehicle. If further corrective ma-
noeuvres are required, the system gives back control to the
driver who mus t complete parking manuall y.
IMPORTANT Steering will be realigned after rever sing
when revers e gear is disengaged. The driver mus t com-
plete the manoeuvre manuall y.
The operation of the parking assistance is
based on different components:
❍ front and rear parking sensors;
❍ side sensors;
❍ steering;
❍ wheels and braking system;
❍ instrument panel.
It is necessary to bear in mind that a malfunction
in one of these systems could compromise the op-
eration of the Magic Parking system.

Identifying a parking space fig. 81
If the system identifies a suitable parking s pace between
two stationary vehicles or between other obs tacles (e.g. ob-
jects with an extens ive side surface such as vehicles , box-
e s, etc.) it will indicate that it ha s found a s pace and that
parking is possible. If the po sition reached is already s uit-
able at the beginning of the manoeuvre, the system will ad-
vis e the driver to engage rever se gear, otherwis e it will re-
ques t moving further forward. On the reques
t to engage revers e gear the driver s hould stop
the vehicle and engage rever se in order to confirm the wi sh
to start the manoeuvre; if the driver continue s driving, af-
ter about 10 metres the system will no longer cons ider the
parking space identified and will start the s ear
ch for new
s uitable space.
Manoeuvre
The driver will have control over the movement s of the ve-
hicle us ing the accelerator, brake and clutch (onl y on ver-
s ions with manual gearbox) whil st the system will auto-
matically manage the s teering to enter the parking s pace
identified in the be st possible wa y.
During the manoeuvre it will be po ssible to take advantage
of the information coming from the parking s ensors (when
rever sing it i s advi sable to reach the area where the rear
s ens ors provide a continuous tone signal), but it i s always
advis able to keep an ey e on the surrounding area.
The vehicle can be s topped during the manoeuvre and,
whils t remaining s tationary, reverse gear can temporarily
be relea sed (for example, to allow a pedes trian to go by in
the area of the manoeuvre).
The speed should be less than about 7 km/h during the
manoeuvr
e, otherwis e the parking manoeuvre will be in-
terrupted.

❍Ultras ound source (e.g. pneumatic brakes of trucks or
air drill s) nearby could negatively influence the sens or
performance.
❍ Sens ors may detect a non-exi stent obs tacle (echo in-
terference) due to mechanical interference, for exam-
ple while wa shing the car, rain, s trong wind, hail.
❍ The sens ors might not detect objects of a particular
s hape or made from particular material s (very thin
poles , trailer beams , panels, nets, bushes, parking de-
terrents , rubbish bins, motor vehicles , etc.). Always take
great care, checking that the car and it s path are ef-
fectively compatible with the parking area identified by
the system.
❍ The us e of (one or more) ty res or rims of a different s ize
to thos e pr
es ent when the vehicle wa s purchas ed could
affect the operation of the system.
❍ If the batter y i s dis connected or very run down, before
the Magic Parking system is available it is necessary
to drive a few hundred metre s, not in a straight line,
to initiali se the system.
❍ If a trailer is fitted (with the plug correctly inserted) the
Magic Parking system will automaticall y be dis abled.
❍ If the Magic Parking system is in “search in progress”
mode, the system could incorrectl y identify a parking
s pace and carry out the manoeuvre (e.g. by a junction,
carriage track, roads crossing the direction of travel,
etc.) ❍
In the ca se of parking manoeuvres on roads on a gra-
dient, the performance of the system could be inferior
and it may deactivate.
❍ If a parking manoeuvr
e is being carried out between
two vehicles parked on the pavement, the Magic Park-
ing system may cause the vehicle to mount the pave-
ment.
❍ Some manoeuvres at very tight bend s may not be car-
ried out.
❍ Take great care to ens ure that conditions do not change
during the parking manoeuvre (e.g. if there are pers ons
and/or animals in the parking area, moving vehicle s,
etc.) and intervene immediatel y if necessary .
❍ During parking manoeuvres , pay s pecial attention to
vehicles approaching from the oppo site direction. Al-
ways follow the Highway Code.

OPERATION WITH TRAILER
The operation of the sens ors is automaticall y deactivated
when the trailer’ s electric plug i s in serted in the car’ s tow
hook socket. The sens ors are automatically reactivated
when the trailer’ s cable plug is removed.
IMPORTANT If y ou wish to leave the tow hook fitted when
there is no trailer, it is advisable to go to a Lancia Deal-
ers hip to have the system updated becau se the tow hook
could be detected as an obstacle by the centre s ensors.
FAULT INDIC AT I O NS
Either symbol

or symbol
t(if the Magic Parking i s not fitted) will light
up on the di splay in combination with a me ssage or with

ensor faults
are detected while revers e is engaged.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
During parking manoeuvre s, pay the utmos t attention to
any obs tacles that could be located above or below the s en-
s ors .
Under certain circum stances close objects located in front
of or behind the vehicle ma y not be detected and could
therefore caus e damage to the vehicle or be damaged
thems elves. The following condition
s ma y influence the performance
of the parking a ssistance system:
❍ Reduced sens or sens itivity and a reduction in the park-
ing assi stance system performance could be due to the
pres ence on the surface of the sens ors of: ice, s now
,
mud, thick paint.
❍ The sens ors detect a non-exi stent obs tacle (echo in-
terference) due to mechanical interference, for exam-
ple when was hing the vehicle, rain ( strong wind), hail.
❍ The indication s s ent by the sensors can als o be altered
b y the pres ence of ultras onic devices (e.g. truck pneu-
matic brake systems or pneumatic drill s) near the car.
❍ The performance of the parking a ssistance system may
als o be affected by the position of the s ensors. For ex-
ample, if the geometr y is altered (as a result of wear of
the shock abs orbers, su spens ion) or the ty res ar
e
changed, the vehicle i s too heavily laden, specific tun-
ing is carried out that lower s the vehicle.
❍ The detection of obs tacles to the upper part of the ve-
hicle is not guaranteed a s the system is designed to de-
tect obs tacles that could impact the lower part of the
vehicle.
