steering wheel for the ignition
switch, or any other control,

The presence of your hand or
arm in this area may cause a
loss of vehicle control result-ing in an accident.
WARNING
NEVER turn the ignition switch
to the LOCK or ACC position
while the vehicle is in motion
except in an emergency. Thiswill result in the engine turning
off and loss of power assist forthe steering and brake systems.
This may lead to loss of direc-
tional control and braking func-
tion, which could cause an acci-dent.

To turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position, push the
key in slightly at the ACC position and turn the key
towards the LOCK position.

If difficulty is experienced turning the ignition switch to
the ACC position, turn the key while turning the steering
wheel right and left to release tension.
ON
This is the normal key position when the engine has
started.
All features and accessories are usable.
The warning lights can be checked when you turn the
ignition switch from ACC to ON.Do not leave the ignition switch in the ON position when
the engine is not running to prevent the battery from dis-charging.
START
To start the engine, turn the ignition switch to the START
position. The switch returns to the ON position when you
let go of the key.The engine will crank until you release the key.

2.Make sure the shift lever is in P (Park).
3.Depress the brake pedal.
4.Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Hold the key
(maximum of 10 seconds) until the
engine starts and release it.
✽✽ NOTICE
Whether the engine is cold or warm, always start the vehicle
with your foot on the brake pedal.
Do not depress the accelerator
while starting the vehicle. Do not
race the engine while warming it
up.
In extremely cold weather (below -18°C / 0°F) or after the vehicle
has not been operated for several
days, let the engine warm up with-
out depressing the accelerator
pedal.

Always wear appropriate shoes
when operating your vehicle.
Unsuitable shoes, such as high
heels, ski boots, sandals, flip-
flops, etc., may interfere with
your ability to use the brake,
accelerator and clutch pedals.
WARNING To prevent damage to the vehi-
cle:
Do not hold the ignition key in
the START position for more
than 10 seconds. Wait 5 to 10
seconds before trying again.
If traffic and road conditions
permit, you may put the shift
lever in the N (Neutral) posi-
tion while the vehicle is still
moving and turn the ignition
switch to the START position
in an attempt to restart the
engine.
Do not push or tow your vehi-
cle to start the engine.

The indicator in the instrument clus-
ter displays the shift lever position
when the ignition switch is in the ONposition.
P (Park)
Always come to a complete stop
before shifting into P (Park).
To shift from P (Park), you must
depress firmly on the brake pedal
and make sure your foot is off the
accelerator pedal.
If you have done all of the above and
still cannot shift the lever out of P
(Park), see “Shift-Lock Release” onpage 5-17.
The shift lever must be in P (Park)
before turning the engine off.
Shifting into P (Park) while the
vehicle is in motion may
cause you to lose control of
the vehicle.
After the vehicle has stopped,
always make sure the shift
lever is in P (Park), apply the
parking brake, and turn the
engine off.
Do not use the P (Park) posi- tion in place of the parking
brake.
WARNING
To reduce the risk of serious
injury or death:
ALWAYS check the surround-
ing areas near your vehicle for
people, especially children,
before shifting a vehicle into
D (Drive) or R (Reverse).

Shift-lock system
For your safety, the automatic
transaxle has a shift-lock system
which prevents shifting the transaxle
from P (Park) or N (Neutral) into R
(Reverse) unless the brake pedal isdepressed.
To shift the transaxle from P (Park) or
N (Neutral) into R (Reverse):
1.Depress and hold the brake pedal.
2.Start the engine or place the igni-tion switch in the ON position.
3.Move the shift lever.
Shift-lock release
If the shift lever cannot be moved
from the P (Park) or N (Neutral) posi-
tion into R (Reverse) position with
the brake pedal depressed, continue
depressing the brake, and then do
the following: 1.Place the ignition switch in the
LOCK/OFF position.
2.Apply the parking brake.
3.Carefully remove the cap (1) cover- ing the shift-lock access hole.
4.Insert a key (or screwdriver) into the access hole and press down
on the key (or screwdriver).
5.Move the shift lever to N (Neutral) while holding down the key (or
screwdriver).
6.Remove the key (or screwdriver) from the shift-lock access hole
then install the cap.
7.Depress the brake pedal, and then restart the engine.
If you need to use the shift-lock
release, have your vehicle inspected
by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer
immediately.

The ignition key cannot be removed
unless the shift lever is in the P
(Park) position.
Parking
Always come to a complete stop and
continue to depress the brake pedal.
Move the shift lever into the P (Park)
position, apply the parking brake,
and place the ignition switch in the
LOCK/OFF position. Take the Key
with you when exiting the vehicle.When you stay in the vehicle
with the engine running, becareful not to depress the accel-
erator pedal for a long period of
time. The engine or exhaust
system may overheat and start
a fire.
The exhaust gas and the
exhaust system are very hot.
Keep away from the exhaustsystem components.
Do not stop or park over flam-
mable materials, such as dry
grass, paper or leaves. They
may ignite and cause a fire.WARNING

Check the Parking Brake Warning
Light by placing the ignition switch to
the ON position (do not start theengine). This light will be illuminated when the
parking brake is applied with the igni-
tion switch in the START or ON posi-tion.
Before driving, be sure the parking
brake is released and the Brake
Warning Light is OFF.

Only release the parking
brake when you are seated
inside the vehicle with your
foot firmly on the brake pedal.
Do not apply the accelerator pedal while the parking brake
is engaged. If you depress theaccelerator pedal with the
parking brake engaged, warn-
ing will sound. Damage to the
parking brake may occur.
Driving with the parking brake
on can overheat the brakingsystem and cause premature
wear or damage to brake
parts. Make sure the parkingbrake is released and the
Brake Warning Light is off
before driving.
