Sensor operation may also be
compromised by the presence of dust ,
condensation, dirt or ice on the
windscreen, by traffic conditions (e.g. vehicles
that are driving not aligned with you car, vehicle
driving in a transverse or opposite way on the
same lane, bend with a small radius of curvature),
by road surface conditions and by driving
conditions (e.g. off-road driving). Make sure the
windscreen is always clean. Use specific
detergents and clean cloths to avoid scratching
the windscreen. The sensor operation may also be
limited or absent in some driving, traffic and
road surface conditions.Projecting loads on the roof of the car
may interfere with the correct operation
of the sensor. Before starting make sure
the load is correctly positioned, in order not to
cover the sensor operating range. If the windscreen must be replaced due to
scratches, chipping or breakage, contact
exclusively a Fiat Dealership. Do not
replace the windscreen on your own, risk of
malfunction! It is advisable to replace the
windscreen if it is damaged in the laser sensor
area.
Do not tamper nor operate on the laser
sensor. Do not close the openings in the
aesthetic cover located under the interior
rear view mirror. In the event of a sensor failure,
contact a Fiat Dealership.
IMPORTANT If you are driving on roads close to
trees with protruding branches it is advisable to
deactivate the system to prevent the branches at the
height of the bonnet or the windscreen from
interfering with the system.Do not cover the operating range of the
sensor with stickers or other objects.
Also pay attention to other objects on the
bonnet (e.g. a layer of snow) and make sure they
do not interfere with the light emitted by the
laser.
WARNING
The laser beam is not visible at the
naked eye. Do not look directly, or with
optical instruments (e.g. lenses), at the laser
beam from a distance lower than 10 cm: this
may cause damage to the sight .The laser beam
is also present when the key is at MAR-ON
but its operation is off, not available or
manually deactivated with the display Setup
Menu (see paragraph “Menu items” in this
chapter).

DUALDRIVE ELECTRIC POWER
STEERINGThis only operates with the key turned to MAR and
the engine started. The steering allows the force
required at the steering wheel to be adjusted to suit
driving conditions.
IMPORTANT When turning the ignition key quickly,
full power steering functionality can be achieved after
a few seconds.
CITY FUNCTION ACTIVATION/
DEACTIVATION
Press button CITY fig. 78 to activate/deactivate the
function. The activation of the function is signalled by
the word CITY on the display (in some versions it
is signalled by the word CITY appearing on the
instrument panel). When the CITY function is on, the steering wheel
effort is lighter and parking operations are easier:
therefore this function is particularly useful for
driving in city centres.
WARNING
It is absolutely forbidden to carr y out
any after-market operation involving
steering system or steering column
modifications (e.g.: installation of anti-theft
device) that could badly affect performance and
safety, invalidate warranty and also result in
non-compliance of the car with type approval
requirements.
IMPORTANT During parking manoeuvres requiring a
lot of steering, the steering may become harder;
this is normal and is due to the intervention of the
system to protect the electric steering motor from
overheating, so no intervention is required. When
the car is used again later on, the power steering will
work normally.

WARNING
Before starting any servicing operation,
stop the engine and remove the key
from the ignition switch to operate the steering
lock, particularly when the wheels do not touch
the ground. If this is not possible (for example
if the key needs to be turned to MAR or the
engine must be running), remove the main fuse
that protects the electric power steering.
WIRING FOR RADIO SYSTEM(for versions/markets, where provided)
If no car radio was requested at the time of
purchase, the car is provided with a compartment on
the dashboard fig. 79.
STANDARD EQUIPMENT
The system consists of:
❒radio supply leads;
❒radio housing;
Remove door panels to install the speakers. Have
this operation carried out at a Fiat Dealership.
The car radio must be fitted in the special
compartment A fig. 79, which can be accessed by
pressing the two retaining tabs B in the
compartment itself; power supply cables are located
in this area.

Rear seats (warning light no. 2, no. 3 and no. 4)
For the rear seats, the reminder cycle is only
activated when any seat belt is unfastened together
with an acoustic signal (three beeps) (icon A
fig. 92). If the condition of any (front or rear) seat
belt changes, also the condition of the other
(front/rear) seat belts is reported.
The visual indication (icon A
fig. 92) will start and
stop independently for each warning light if several
seat belts are unfastened. The visual signal will
change condition (icon B
fig. 92) after the
corresponding seat has been fastened again.
IMPORTANT When the ignition key is turned to
MAR, if all the front and rear belts are already
fastened the warning lights will remain in position B
fig. 92 for 30 seconds.
IMPORTANT When the ignition key is turned to
MAR, the belts fastened icons will remain in position
B
fig. 92, whilst the belts unfastened icons will
be displayed as in position A
of fig. 92. If the last
belt is also fastened, the icons will remain in position
B
fig. 92 for 30 seconds then they will switch off.
PRETENSIONERSThe car is equipped with front seat belt
pretensioners, which draw back the seat belts by
several centimetres in the event of a strong frontal
impact. This guarantees the perfect adherence of the
seat belts to the occupants' bodies before the
restraining action begins. It is evident that
the pretensioners have operated when the belt
withdraws towards the reel. This car is also equipped
with a second pretensioner (in the kick plate area).
Its activation is signalled by the shortening of the
metal cable. A slight discharge of smoke may be
produced during the activation of the pretensioner
which is not harmful and does not involve any fire
hazard.
IMPORTANT To obtain the highest degree of
protection from the action of the pretensioning
device, wear the seat belt tight to the chest and
pelvis.
The pretensioner does not require any maintenance
or lubrication: any changes to its original conditions
will invalidate its efficiency. If, due to unusual natural
events (floods, sea storms, etc.), the device has
been affected by water and mud, it must be replaced.

WARNING
If the key is inser ted and turned to MAR
when no faults are indicated by the
warning lights, air bags may be deployed if
another vehicle crashes into the vehicle even if
the engine is not running and the vehicle is
stationary. For this reason, children must never
occupy the front seat , even if the car is not
moving. On the other hand, if the key is inser ted
in STOP position, none of the safety devices
(air bags or pretensioners) will be deployed in
the event of impact . Non-deployment of these
devices does not indicate a system malfunction.
WARNING
For versions/markets where provided,
when the ignition key is turned to MAR,
the “yellow”
warning light switches on for a
few seconds. If the passenger air bag/side bag is
active, the “yellow” warning light switches off
after a few seconds. If the passenger air bag/side
bag is NOT active, the “yellow” warning light
stays on.
WARNING
The air bag deployment threshold is
higher than that of the pretensioners.
For collisions in the range between the two
thresholds, it is normal for only the
pretensioners to be activated.
WARNING
The air bag does not replace seat belts
but increases their effectiveness.
Because front air bags are not deployed for
low-speed crashes, side collisions, rear-end
shunts or rollovers, occupants are protected, in
addition to any side bags, only by their seat
belts, which must therefore always be fastened.
WARNING
If the “red”
warning light does not
switch on for a few seconds when the
key is turned to MAR, there may be a fault with
the “red” warning light . In this case, the
“yellow” warning light star ts to flash after a few
seconds and, for versions/markets where
provided, the explosive charges of the passenger
air bag and the side bag are deactivated. Before
continuing, contact a Fiat Dealership
immediately to have the system checked.

STARTING PROCEDURE FOR DIESEL
VERSIONS
Proceed as follows:
❒engage the handbrake and place the gearbox lever
in neutral;
❒turn the ignition key to MAR-ON: the warning
lights
and
on the instrument panel will
turn on;
❒wait for the warning lights
and
to switch
off;
❒fully press the clutch pedal without touching the
accelerator;
❒turn the ignition key to AVV as soon as warning
light
switches off. Waiting too long will waste
the heating work carried out by the plugs. Release
the key as soon as the engine starts.
IMPORTANT With cold engine, the accelerator must
be entirely released when turning the ignition key
to position AVV.
If the engine does not start at the first attempt,
return the ignition key to STOP before repeating the
procedure.
If, when the ignition key is at MAR-ON the
warning light remains lit, turn the key to STOP
and then back to MAR-ON; if the warning light
remains lit, try with the other keys provided with the
car.
Contact the Fiat Dealership if the engine still will not
start.
Warning light
will flash for 60 seconds
after starting or during prolonged
cranking to indicate a fault with the glow
plug heating system. You can use the car as usual
if the engine starts but you should contact a
Fiat Dealership as soon as possible.
WARNING
It is dangerous to run the engine in
enclosed areas.The engine takes
in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide, carbon
monoxide and other toxic gases.
WARNING
Remember that the brake servo and
power steering are not operational until
the engine has been started, therefore much
effort than usual is required on the brake pedal
and steering wheel. We recommend that during the initial
period you do not demand to full
performance from the car (e.g. excessive
acceleration, long journeys at top speed, sharp
braking etc .).

When the engine is switched off never
leave the key turned to MAR-ON to
prevent useless current absorption from
draining the battery.Never jump start the engine by pushing,
towing or coasting downhill.This could
cause fuel to flow into the catalytic
conver ter and damage it beyond repair.
WARMING UP THE ENGINE JUST AFTER IT
HAS STARTED
Proceed as follows:
❒drive off slowly, letting the engine turn at medium
revs. Do not accelerate abruptly;
❒do not demand full performance at first. Wait until
the second bar on the engine coolant temperature
gauge switches on.STOPPING THE ENGINE
Turn the ignition key to STOP while the engine is
idling.
IMPORTANT After a demanding drive, before
turning the engine off you should allow it to idle to
allow the temperature in the engine compartment to
decrease.
A quick burst on the accelerator before
turning off the engine serves absolutely no
practical purpose, it wastes fuel and is
especially damaging to turbocharged engines.
