wh ile driving or when accelerating or
when applying the brakes or when driv­
ing around a corner .
- When you are driving make sure that
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage locations
cannot fa ll out into the footwells . In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake, depress the clutch or acceler­
ate.
- Any articles of cloth ing that you have
hung up must not interfere with the driv­
er's v iew. The coat hooks are designed
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang
any clothing with hard, pointed or heavy
objects in the pockets on the coat hooks .
During sudden braking or in an accident -
especially if the airbag is deployed -
these objects could injure any passen­
gers inside the veh icle .
Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and
can be locked.

glasses case in the lid.
T he glove compartment has a standard
12-
volt socket for connecting electrical accesso­
ries. The power consumption at the outlet
must not exceed 100 watts. The socket works
only w ith the ignition switched on.

To reduce the risk of personal injury in an
accident or sudden stop, always keep the
g love compartment closed while driving.

There is a fold-out storage compartment in
the front of the seats .

-Always pay attention to traffic even when
the cruise control is switched on. You are
always responsible for your speed and
the distance between your vehicle and
other vehicles.
- For safety reasons, the cruise control
should not be used in the city, in stop­
and-go traffic, on twisting roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -risk of accident.
- Turn
off the cruise control temporarily
when entering turn lanes, highway exit
lanes or in construction zones.
- Please note that inadvertently "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is
because the cruise control is overridden
by the driver's acceleration.
@ Tips
- Vehicles with manual transmission: You
can attain the set speed only if the cur­
rently engaged gear allows it and the en­
gine is not stressed. Shifting to a higher
or lower gear promptly will allow the en­
gine to run smoothly .
- The cruise control cannot maintain a
constant speed when driving downhill.
The vehicle will accelerate under its own
weight. Downshift to a lower gear or use
the brakes to slow down.
Changing speed
.,. Press lever in the 0 or 0 direction
¢ page 73, fig. 79 to increase or decrease
your speed.
.,. Release the lever to save that speed.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down
to increase your speed, e.g. if you want to
pass someone. The speed you saved earlier
will resume as soon as you release the acceler­ ator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by
S mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 minutes,
the cruise control will turn
off temporarily.
The symbol will go out but the saved speed
will be retained .
Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.

The system retains the saved speed if you de­
activate the cruise control temporarily. To re­
sume the saved speed, release the brake or
clutch pedal and pull the lever to position

Switching the ignition off erases the saved
speed.

In a collision, the laws of physics mean that
even smaller items that are loose in the ve hi­
cle will become heavy missiles that can cause
serious injury. Items in the vehicle possess en­
ergy which vary with vehicle speed and the
weight of the item . Vehicle speed is the most
sig nificant factor.
For examp le, in a frontal coll is ion at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a
10 -lb (4 .5 kg) object are about 20 times the
norma l we ight of the item. Th is means that
the we ight of the item would suddenly be
about 200 lbs. (90 kg). You can imag ine the
in ju ries that a 200 lbs. (90 kg) item flyi ng
freely th roug h the passenge r compartment
could cause in a collision like this.
~ WARNING
Improperly stored luggage or other items
can fly through the vehicle ca us ing serious
personal in jury in the event of hard brak­
ing or an acc ident. To help reduce the risk
of serious personal injury :
-Always put objects, for examp le, luggage
or other heavy items in the luggage com­
partment .
A WARNING
Heavy loads will influence the way your ve­
hicle handles . T o help reduce the r is k of a
loss of control leading to ser ious personal
injury:
- Always keep i n m ind whe n transporting
heavy objects, that a c hange in t he cen­
t er of g ravity c an also cause c hanges in
vehicle handling .
- Never exceed the G ross Ax le Weight R at­
ing or the Gross Veh icle Weight R ating
specified on t he safety compliance s tic k­
er on the left door jamb. Exceeding pe r­

- After closing the front lid, always make sure that it is p rope rly closed and locked .

pecially with the front lid left open . A
child co uld craw l into the luggage com­
pa rtment and close the front lid becom­
ing tr apped and unable to ge t out. Being
trapped in a veh icle can lead to se rious
pe rsonal injury .

Why safety belts?
Frontal collisions and the law of physics
Frontal crashes create very strong forces for
people riding in vehicles.

The physical principles are simple. Both the
vehicle and the passengers possess energy
which varies w ith veh icle speed and body
weight . Engineers call this energy "kinetic en­
e rgy ."
The higher the speed of the vehicle and the
g reater the vehicle 's we ight, the more energy
that has to be "absorbed" in the crash .
Vehicle speed is the most sign ificant factor.
If
the speed doubles from 15 to 30 mph (25 to
50 km/h), the ene rgy inc reases 4 t imes!
Because the occupants in this vehicle are not
using safety belts¢

mov ing at the same speed the vehicle was
mov ing just before the c rash, unt il something
stops them - here, the wall ¢

The same principles apply to people sitting in
a vehicle that is involved in a frontal collision .
Even at c ity speeds of 20 to 30 mph (30 to 50
km/h), the forces acting on the body can
reach one ton (2,000 lbs , or 1,000 kg) or
more . At higher speeds, these forces are even
greater .
Peop le who do not use safety belts are also
not attached to their vehicle. In a frontal coll i­
s io n they wi ll also keep moving forward at the
speed their veh icle was t ravell ing just before
the crash . Of co urse, the laws of physics don't
just app ly to frontal collisions, they determine
wh at h appens i n all kinds of a ccidents and col­
lisions .
What happens to occupants not wearing
safety belts?
In crashes unbelted occupants cannot stop
themselves from flying forward and being in­
jured or killed. Always wear your safety belts!

Unbelted occupants are not able to resist the

Never rely on a irbags alone fo r protection .
Even when they deploy , a irbags provide on ly
additional protection . Airbags are not sup ­
posed to deploy in all k inds of accidents. Al ­
t h ough your Audi is equipped with airbags, all ..,

child to ride. The front seat is not the safest
p lace for a child in a forward-facing child safe­
ty seat . It can be a very dangerous place for an
infant or a child in a rearward-facing seat.
The Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle has been certified to comply with the Require­
ments of United States Federa l Motor Veh icle
Safety Standard 208 as applicable at the time
your veh icle was manufactured.
The Standard requires the front airbag on the passenger side to be turned off ("sup­
pressed") if a ch ild up to about one year of
age restra ined in one of the rear-facing or for­
ward-facing infant restra ints listed in Federal
Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 with w hich
the Advanced Ai rbag System in your vehicle
was certified has been installed o n the front
passenger seat. For a list ing of the child re­
straints that were used to certify compliance
with the US Safety Standard

s trument panel te lls you when the front Ad­
vanced Airbag on the passenger side has bee n
turned off by the e lectronic control unit .

The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on
when the control un it detects a total weight
on the front passenger sea t that requires the
fr ont airbag to be tu rned off.
If the total we ight on the front passenger
seat is mo re than that of a typical 1 year-o ld
child but less than the weight of a sma ll
ad ult, the front airbag o n the passenge r side
can dep loy (the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
lig ht does not come on). If the PASSENGER

front airbag on the passenger side has not been t urned off by the elect ronic contro l un it
and can deploy if the control unit senses an
impact that meets the cond itions stored in its
memory .
For example , the airb ag may deplo y if:
-a small ch ild tha t is heav ier t han a typical 1
year -old chi ld is on the fron t passenger seat
(regard less of whether the child is i n one of
the child safety seats listed

- a child who has outgrown chi ld restraints is
on the front passenger seat .
If the fron t passenger a irbag is turned off, the
PA SS ENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on in
the instr ument pane l and stays on.

the "low risk" dep loyment criteria to reduce

Always remember, a c hild safety seat or infant

idly i nflat ing passenger 's airbag in a front al

seriously injure the child during inflation.

- The inflating airbag will hit the child
safety seat or infant carrier with great
force and w ill smash the ch ild safety seat
and child against the backrest, door or
roof.
- Never install a rearward facing child
safety seat on the front passenge r seat
unless the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light comes on and stays on . If the PAS­
SENGER AIR BAG OFF
light does not
come on and stay on the infla ting airbag
wi ll hi t the child safe ty seat or infant car­
rie r with great force and will smash the
child safety seat and child against the
backrest, door or roof . Have the airbag
system inspected immediately by your
authorized Audi dealer .
- Forward-fac ing ch ild safety seats instal­
led on the front passenger's seat may in­
terfere with the deployment of the air­
bag and cause serious personal injury to
the ch ild.
A WARNING
If, in exceptional c ircumstances, you must
install a forwa rd-facing child restra int on
t he fron t passenger's seat:
- Always make sure the forward-fac ing
sea t has been des igned and certified by
i t s manufac turer for use on a fro nt sea t
with a passenger front an d side airbag.
- Never put the forwa rd-f acing child re­
s t rain t up aga inst or very near the inst ru ­
ment pane l.
- Always move t he passenger seat into i ts
rearmost position in the seat 's fore and
aft adjustment ran ge, as far away from
the a irbag as poss ible before installing
the forward-facing child restraint . The
backrest must be adjusted to an upr ight
posit ion.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the
t ime whenever the ignition is switched
on .
A WARNING
To reduce the risk of serious injury, make
sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light w ill be displayed whenever a child re­
straint is insta lled on the front passenger
sea t and the igni tion is sw itched on .
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not stay on, perform the checks de­
s cri bed

- Have the airbag system inspected by

can reduce their effectiveness o r even

- An improper ly installed c hild restra int
can interfere with the airbag as it de­ p loys and seriously injure or even k ill the
child -even with an Advanced Airbag
System .
- Always carefully follow the manufactur­
er 's instructions prov ided with the chi ld
safety seat or carrier .
- Never p lace add itiona l items on the seat
that ca n increase the total weight reg is­
tered by the weig ht-sensing mat and can
cause injury in a crash.

The front Advanced Airbag Sys tem supp le­
ments the safety belts to provide additional
protection for the driver's and front passeng­
er 's heads and upper bodies in fronta l crashes.
The airbags inflate only in fronta l impacts
when the vehicle dece lerat ion is high enough.
The front Advanced Airbag System for the
front seat occupants is not a substitute for
your safety belts. Rather, it is part of the over­ all occupant restraint system in your veh icle.
A lways remember that the airbag system ca n
only help to protect you, if you are s itting up­
right, wearing yo ur safety belt and wea ring it
p roperly. This is why you and you r passenge rs
must always be properly restr ained , not just
beca use the law requires you to be.
The Advanced Airbag System i n your veh icle
has been cer tified to meet the " low r is k " re­
qu iremen ts for
3 an d 6 year-o ld childre n on
the passenger side and very small adu lts on
the driver side. The low risk deploymen t crite ­
ria are intended to he lp red uce the risk of in­
jury through interaction with the front airbag that can occur, for example, by be ing too
close to the steer ing whee l and instrument
panel when the airbag i nflates .
In addition, the system has been certif ied to
comp ly w ith the "suppression" requ irements
of the Safety Standard, to tur n off the front
a irbag for infants
12 months old and younger
who a re restra ined on the front passenger
seat in c hild restra ints that a re listed in the

page 134, Child restraints and
Advanced Airbags.
"Suppression" requires the front airbag on the passenger side to be turned off if :
- a ch ild up to about one year of age is re­
stra ined on the front passenger seat in one
of the rear-facing or forwa rd-fac ing infa nt
rest raints listed in Federa l Motor Veh icle
Safety Standard 208 wit h whi ch the Ad­
vanced Airbag System in your vehicle w as

tor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 w it h which
the Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle
was ce rtified), the front airbag on the passen­
ger side may or may not deploy.

ta l we ight on the front passenger seat that re­
quires t he front airbag to be tu rned off. If t he
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ligh t does no t

u nit and can dep loy if the control unit senses
an impact that meets the conditions stored in
its memory.
