The 12-volt outlets can be used for electrical
accessories. The power input must not exceed
120 watts.
There may be just one out let at the front of
the center conso le depending on your model.
There are two additional 12-vo lt outlets in the
rear center console.
Before you purchase any accessories, always
read and fo llow the information in
¢ page 318, Additional accessories and parts
replacement.

A WARNING
-Always remove objects fro m the inst ru­
men t pa nel. Any items not stored could
slide around inside the vehicle whi le dr iv­
i n g or when acce le rating o r when app ly ­
i n g the brakes or when driving around a
corner.
- W hen you are driving make sure that
anyth ing you may have placed in the cen­
ter conso le or other storage locations

of sudden braki ng you would not be able

-Any articles of cloth ing that you have
hung up must not interfere with the driv­
er's view. The coat hooks are designed
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang
any clothing with hard, pointed or heavy
objects in the pockets on the coat hooks.
During sudden braking or in an accident -
especially if the airbag is deployed -
these objects could injure any passen­
gers inside the vehicle.

To open glove compartment

To close glove compartment
.. Push the glove compartment lid up until the
lock engages.
In the g love compartment lid you will find a
p lace to store a pen and a pad of paper .
A WARNING
To reduce the risk of persona l injury in an
accident or sudden stop, always keep the
glove compartment closed whi le driving.

Cooling box in glove compartment
The cooling box works only when the air-con­
ditioning is in cooling mode .

not impair the driver 's vision .
- T he coat hooks must only be use d for
lightwe ight cloth ing. Do not leave any
heavy or sharp edged objects in the pock­
ets which may interfere with the side cur­
tain airbag deployment and can cause
personal injury in a crash.
- Do not use coat hangers for hanging
clothing on the coat hooks as this can in- terfere with proper deployment of the
side curta
in a irbags in an acc ident.
- Do not hang heavy objects on the coat
hooks , as they could cause personal in­
jury in a sudden stop.
Storage in the door panels
There is a storage compartment in the interi­
or door panel .

A WARNING

which do not prot rude from the compart­
ment, so t hat the effective range of the

Synchr oniz ing clim ate control
By pressing and holding the regu lator on the
d river's side , the temperature setting on the
driver's side can be switched to the passeng ­
er's side, and vice versa. The new temperature is shown in the display.
Synchronizing fou r-zone autom atic
comfort air conditi oning*
By pressing and holding the regu lator on the
driver's side, the temperature setting on the
driver's s ide can be sw itched to the passeng­
er's side and to the outer rear seats. The new
temperature is shown in the disp lay . By simu
ltaneously pressing and holding the
regulators on the driver's side and front pas ­
senger's s ide, the temperature setting on the
driver's side can be switched to the front pas­
senger's s ide . The new temperature is shown
in the disp lay .
(D Tips
The gr ille on the controls must rema in un­
obstr ucted and must not be taped over.

The air conditioner turns back on when you press the
temperatu re regulator or one of the
buttons.

With the ign ition t urned off, you can acti­
vate the residua l heat funct ion by pressing
the
ION/O FF I button . The res idual heat
from the coolant can be used to heat the
vehicle interior .
Air Conditioner On/Off~
Switching off the air conditioner saves fuel .
.,. Press the IAIC I button to switch the air con-
ditioner on or off.
When the air conditioner is switched on, the indicator lamp in the b utton will illum inate
and the heat ing/venti lation system is contro l­
led automatically .

Air distribution determines the air flow to the individual vents .

below the particular outlet to increase, re­
duce , or shut down the airflow from that
outlet.
~ T o adj ust the d irect ion of the airflow from
the outlet, move the tab i n the center of the
outlet in the desired di rect ion . The direction
of the air de livered from the vents can be
adjusted horizontally and vertically .

The air out lets are actuated either automati ­
cally or manually depend ing on the operating
mode selected.
@ Tips
When climate contro l is working, coo led
air will flow primarily from outlets @and
@ . To assure adequate cooling, o utlets @
and @ should never be completely closed.
Air outlets in the rear

~ Rotate the thumbwheel located next to the
outlet to open or close it.
~ To ad just the direc tion o f the airflow from
the outlet , move the tab in the center of the
outlet in the des ired direction . The d irection
of the a ir delivered from the v ents can be
adjusted hor izonta lly and ver tically .
Outlets in the door pill ars
~ Rotate the horizontal thumb whee l located
be low the outlet to open or close it .
~ To adjust the direction of the airflow from
the outlet, move the tab in the center of the
out let in the des ired direction. The d irect ion
of the a ir delivered from the vents ca n be
adjusted horizonta lly and ver tica lly.

mode selected . Heated o r unheated fresh air,
o r cooled air flows from the vents.

The automatically controlled air distribution
con be changed manually.
., Press the [a button.
., Rotate the regulator to the desired setting.
You can adjust the air circulation so that air
flows from specific vents.
- In position
:J, all air flows from the vents in
the center console and the outlets to the
door pillars.
- In position
:0, air flows from the outlets in
the door pillars.
- In position~, air flows from the outlets un-
der the front seats.
There are additional combinations available to
adjust air distribution as needed.
To regulate air distribution automatically,
switch to IAUTOI.
Basic settings
General
The basic climate control settings con be ad­
justed in the MMI.

Automatic recirculation mode '
An air quality sensor detects increased con­
centrations of pollutants in the outside air
and automatically switches to recirculation
mode .
We recommend that you always keep auto ­
matic air recirculation ON to prevent polluted
outside air from entering the vehicle interior.
If the
air quality sensor located in the air con­
ditioning system detects polluted outside air,
the sensor decides whether the air pollution
can be reduced by the factory-installed pollu­
tant filter or whether it is necessary to switch
to air recirculation. With heavy concentrations
of pollutants, the air conditioning system is
switched automatically to recirculation mode
and the supply of outside air is blocked. As
soon as the concentration of pollutants in the
outside air drops, fresh air is supplied to the
vehicle interior again.
In the event that the windows fog up during
automatic air recirculation, you must press
the® button immediately .
Under certain operating conditions, automatic
air recirculation is switched off automatically.
With outside temperatures below about SO °F
(+10 °(), automatic air recirculation is limited
to 30 seconds. With outside temperatures be­ low about 30 °F
( - 1 °() and with the air condi ­
tioner switched off, the automatic air recircu­ lation is limited to 15 seconds.
Synchronization
One climate control setting for the driver and
front passenger seats .
With synchronization active, the driver's set­
tings are adopted for the passenger or vice
versa. All the other settings that were made
are transferred to the other seat . This in­
cludes all the climate control settings, except
for the seat heating/ventilation* .
If a different setting is selected at a
"synchronized seat ", synchronization is can­
celled.

Synchronization
Applies to vehicles: with four-zone automatic comfort air
conditioning
One climate control setting for all seats .
With synchroni zation active, the driver's set­
tings are adopted for the front passenger and
the rear left and right seats. All the other set­
tings that were made are transfer red to the
other seats. This includes a ll the climate con­
t rol settings, except for the seat heat ing/ven­
tilation* .
If a different setting is se lected at a
"synchroni zed seat", synchron iz at ion is can­
celled .
Supplementary heater
Applies to vehicles: with diesel engine

The air conditioning in the rear of the vehicle
con be controlled from the cockpit.

Heated Seats

Applies to vehicles: with electrically heated front seats
The seat cushion and the seotbock of the
front seats con be heated electrically.
" Press the Ill button.
" Rotate the regulator to the des ired setting.
In position O the heat ing for the seats is
turned off. The range of adjustment is be­
tween 1 and 6.
A WARNING
Indiv iduals with reduced sens itiv ity to pain
or temperature cou ld deve lop burns when
using the seat heat ing funct ion. To reduce
the r isk of injury, these ind ividuals shou ld
not use seat heating.
(D Note
To avoid damage to the heat ing e lements
i n the seats, do not kneel on the seats or
place heavy loads on a small area of the
seat.
Front seat ventilation [i]
Applies to vehicles: with front seat ventilation
The seat cushion and the seotbock on the
front seats con be ventilated.
" Press the~ button .
" Rotate the regulato r to the des ired setting.
When the regulator is in the O position, the
seat ventilation is sw itched off . The ra nge of
adjustment is between 1 and 6 .
