Starting/stopping the engine

.. Slow the vehicle to a stop using the brake
and keep pressing the brake pedal. The en­
gine w ill switch off. The
[IJ indic ator light
appears in the information line in the instru­
ment cluster display.
.. When you take your foot off the brake ped­
al, the engine restarts. The indicator light
turns off.
Additional information
The engine wi ll switch off in the P, D, N and S
positions as well as in manua l mode . In the P
position, the engine wi ll also remain off if you
take your foot off the brake pedal. The engine
starts again when you select another se lector
lever position and take your foot off the brake
pedal.
If you select the R pos ition during a Stop
phase, the engine will start again.
Shift from D to P quickly to prevent the engine
from start ing unintentionally when shifting
through R.
You can determine for yourself if the engine
will stop or not by reducing or increasing the
amount of force you use to press the brake
pedal. For example, if you only lightly press
on the brake pedal in stop-and and-go traffic
or when turni ng, the engine will not switch off
when the vehicle is stationa ry . As soon as you
press the brake down harder, the engine will
switch off.
General information
Applies to vehicles: with Start -Stop-System
The standard Start-Stop-mode can be cancel­
led for different system-related reasons.

Engine will not switch off
Before each stop phase, the system checks if
certain conditions have been met. For exam­
ple, the eng ine will
not be switched off in the
following situations :
- The engine has not reached the minimum
requ ired temperature for Start-Stop-mode.
- The interior temperat ure se lected by the A/C
system has not been reached.
- The outside temperatu re is extremely high/
low .
- The windshield is being defrosted

- The parking system* is switched on.
- The battery charge level is too low.
- The steering wheel is sharply turned or
t here is a steering movement.
- After engaging the reverse gear.
- On sharp incl ines.

Engine automatically restarts
T he stop phase is interrupted in the following
situations, for example . The engine restarts
without any action by the driver .
- The interior tempera ture varies from the
temperature selected in the A/C system .

se lected with the se lecto r lever. For example,
this happens if adapt ive cr uise control cannot
resume dr iv ing in stop-and-go traff ic because
one o f the c onditions required for ACC to wor k
i s not p resent .
Door open

Stationary object ahead
This m essage appea rs if you would like to
sw itc h ada ptive cr uise con trol on and ther e is
a stat io na ry ve hicle o r obstacle directly ahead
of yo ur vehicle .

At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the
Automatic Shift Lock is automatically deact i­
vated in the N position .
A time de lay element prevents the se lector
l ever from locking when it is moved through
the N position (go ing from R to D/S). The lock­
ing e lement will lock the selecto r lever if the
l ever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap ­
proximately 2 second, without the brake ped­
al being pressed .
Relea se butt on
The release button on the selector lever pre ­
vents the lever from being accidentally shifted
into certain positions . Depending on the direc­
tion of the shift, the se lector lever locks at d if­
ferent positions. The positions are h ighlighted
i n the illustration

Startin g the engin e
• The selector leve r must be in P or N .
Starting off
• Press and hold the brake pedal.
• Press and hold the release button in these­
lector lever handle, select the desired se lec­
tor lever pos ition such as D/S and release
the button .
• Wait br iefly until the transmission has shift­
ed (you will feel a slight movement).
• Remove your foot from the b rake pedal and
acce le rate .

Stopping t emporaril y
• Keep the veh icle stationary using the brak ­
ing pedal , for example at traffic lights .
• Do not press the accelerator peda l when do­
ing this .
• To prevent the vehicle from ro lling when you
start driv ing, set the parking brake when
stopping on steep inclines

• The parking brake will release automat ically
and the vehicle will start mov ing once you
press the acce lerator pedal.
Stopping /parking
If the selector lever is not in the P position
when you open the driver's door, the veh icle
could roll. The message

• Press and hold the brake pedal until the ve-
hicle has come to a comp lete stop .
• Apply the parking brake

Stopping on an incline
• Always press the brake pedal to ho ld the ve­
hicle in place and preven t it from "rolling
back"

gaged by increasing the engine speed

Starting on an incline
• Activate the parking brake.
• With the driving gear selected, press the ac­
celerator pedal carefully . The parking brake
w ill release automatically if your seat belt is
fastened.
Under certa in circumstances, such as driving
in the mounta ins, it may be usefu l to sw itch
temporar ily to the manual sh ift p rogram in or­
der to adj ust the gears to the driving cond i­
ti ons by hand

On slopes, activate the parki ng b rake first and
then move the selector lever to the P position.
T his prevents too much st ress from being
placed on the locking mechanism.

8_ WARNING
-The vehicle can also roll when the engine
is stopped .
- Unintended vehicle movement can cause
serious injury.
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine running whi le in gear. If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running, act ivate the park ing brake and move the
selector lever to P.
- Power is st ill transmitted to the wheels
when the eng ine is running at idle . To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the b rake when
the engine is runn ing and the se lector
lever is in D/S or R or "tiptronic" mode is
selected .
- Do no t press the accelera tor pedal when
changing the selector lever position
whi le the vehicle is stationary and the
engine is running.
- Never shift into
R or P whi le driving.
- Be fore driv ing down a steep slope, re -
duce you r speed and shift into a lower
gear with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
peda l too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substant ially re­
duces braking performance, increases
braking d istance or causes comp lete fail­
ure of the brake system.
- To prevent the veh icle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it in place with the brake peda l or parking
brake.
- Never hold the veh icle on an incl ine with
a slipp ing clutch . The clutch opens auto­
matically when it becomes too hot from
the ove rload. An ind icator lamp
[O] illu­
minates and a dr iver message appears
¢ page 114 when the clutch is overload ­
ed.
- If the eng ine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and is locked in P w
it h the park ing brake set
¢ page 227. Otherw ise, any increase in
engine speed may set the vehicle in mo­
tion, even with the parking brake ap­ plied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incl ine, do not try
to hold t he vehicle in place by pressing
the acce lerator pedal while a driving gear
is se lected. This ca n cause the transmis­
sion to ove rheat and can damage it . Acti­
vate the pa rking brake or press the bra ke
peda l to preven t the vehicle from roll ing.
- Allowing th e vehicle to ro ll when the en­
gine is stopped and the selecto r lever is
in N will d amage the tr ansmission be­
cause it is not l ubricated unde r those cir ­
cumstances .
(D Tips
Fo r saf ety reaso ns, the pa rking br ake is re­
l eased automatically on ly when the d riv­
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Hill descent control
Appl ies to vehicles: wit h S t ronic/tiptro nic
The hill descent control system assis ts the
driver when driving down declines.
Hill des cent con trol is activated when these­
lector lever is in D/S and yo u press the brake
peda l. The transmission automatica lly selects
a gear that is suitable for the incline . Hi ll de ­
scent contro l tries to maintain the speed ach ­
ieved at the time of braking, within phys ica l
and technical lim itations. If may st ill be nec­
essary to adjust the speed with the brakes .
Hill descent cont ro l switches off once the de­
cline leve ls out or you press the acce lerator
pedal.
On vehicles with the cruise contro l system*
¢ page 84, hill descent control is also activat-
ed when the speed is set. .,..

Homelink
Universal remote
control
General information
Applies to vehicles: with Homelink u nive rsal remote con­
tro l
The HomeLink universal remote control can
be programmed with hand-held transmitters
from existing equipment.
With Homelink, you can control devices such
as the garage door, security systems, house
lights, etc. comfortably from the inside of you
vehicle.
Homelink makes it possible for you to replace
three different remote controls from devices in your home with one universal remote . Th is
feature works for most garage door and exte­
rior door motor signals. Programming the in­
d iv idual remo te control fo r your remote con ­
trol takes p lace near the center of the radiator
grille. There is a control module attached at
this location .
A one-t ime programm ing of the sensor mus t
be performed before you are able to use sys­
tems w ith Homelink.
A WARNING
- Never use the Homelink transmitter
with any garage door opener that does
have not the safety stop and reverse fea­
ture as requ ired by federal safety stand­
ards. Th is includes any garage door open­
er model manufactured before April 1, 1982.
- A garage door opener which cannot de­
tect an object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse does not meet current feder­
al safety standards . Us ing a garage doo r
opener witho ut these fea tures increases
risk of serious injury or death.
- For safety reasons never release the
parking brake or start the engine while
anyone is standing in front of the vehicle .
- A garage door or an estate gate may
sometimes be set in motion when the Homelink remote control is being pro­
grammed. If the device is repeatedly ac­
tivated, this can overstrain motor and
damage its electrical components -an
overheated motor is a fire hazard!
- To avo id possible injuries or property
damage, please always make absolutely
certa in that no persons or objects are lo­
cated in the range of motion of any
equ ipment being operated.

Always apply brakes early. When driving
downhill, shift into a lower gear to use the en­
g ine braking effect to slow the vehicle . Use of
the brakes a lone can cause them to overheat
and fail.
Coolant temperature
The coolant temperature gauge ¢ page 11
must be observed carefully. The coo lant tem­
perature can increase if you drive on long in­
clines in a low gear at high engine speeds. Re­
duce your speed immediately if the LEDs in
the top part of the display turn on .

Anyone not properly restrained in a mov­
ing vehicle is at a much greater risk in an

Trailer towing tips
Important to know
Your vehicle hand les different ly when towing
-
a trailer because of the additional weight and
d ifferent weight distribution . Safety, perform­
ance and economy w ill greatly depend on how
carefully you load your trailer and operate
your rig .
Before you actually tow your trailer, practice
turning, stopp ing and backing up in an area
away from traffic . Keep practicing until you
have become completely familiar with the way
your veh icle-trailer comb ination behaves and
responds .
Backing up is diff icult and requires practice .
Backing up with a tra iler genera lly requires
steer ing action opposite to that when backing
up your vehicle without a trailer.
Maintain a greater distance between your ve­
hicle and the one in front of you. You will need
more room to stop. To compensate for the
Trailer towing 211
trailer, you wi ll need a larger than normal
turning radius.
When passing, remember that you cannot ac­
ce lerate as fast as you norma lly would be­
cause of the added load. Make sure you have
enough room to pass. After passing, allow
plenty of room for your trailer before chang­
ing lanes again.
Avoid jerky starts, sharp turns or rapid lane
changes.

- Do not tow a trailer during the break-in
period of your vehicle.
- If you tow a trailer, your Audi may re­
quire more frequent maintenance due to
the extra load¢

Parking on a slope
Do not pork on a slope with a trailer . If it can­
not be avoided, do so only after doing the fol­
lowing:
When parking:

.,. Have someone place chocks under both the
veh icle and the trailer wheels.
"' With chocks in place, slowly release the
brakes until the wheel chocks absorb the
load .
.,. Turn the wheels towards the curb.
.,. Apply the parking brake.
.,. Select the P selector lever posit ion.
When restarting after parking:
.,. App ly the foot brake.
.,. Start the engine.
.,. Select the D/S selector lever position .
.,. Release the parking brake and slowly pull
out and away from the wheel chocks.

partment could start a fire.

- If you must perform a check or repa ir
with the engine running:
- Fi rst, fully apply the parking brake,

ting caught in the radiator fan, V -belts
or other moving parts, or from contact­ ing hot parts . Tie back hair before

Do not try to push it shut; it may fail to en­

A hood that is not completely latched

-When you close the engine hood, check it

ly engaged. The hood sho uld be flush

- If you notice while driv ing that the hood
is not s ecured prope rly, stop at onc e and
close it.

Before changing a wheel
Observe the following precautions for your
own and your passenger's safety when chang ­
ing a wheel .
... After you experience a tire failure, pull the
car well away from moving traffic and try to
reach

move to a safe location (for instance, behind
the guardrail)

A WARNING
You or your passengers could be injured
while changing a wheel if you do not fol­
low these safety precautions:
- If you have a flat tire,
move a safe dis­
tance off the road. Turn off the engine,
turn the emergency flashers on and use
other warning devices to alert other mo­
torists.
- Make sure that passengers wait in a safe
place away from the vehicle and well
away from the road and traffic.
- To help prevent the vehicle from moving
sudden ly and possibly slipping off the
jack, always fully set the parking brake
and block the wheel diagonally opposite
the wheel being changed . When one
front wheel is lifted off the ground, plac­
ing the Automatic Transmission in P
(Park) will
not prevent the vehicle from
moving.
- Before you change a wheel, be sure the
ground is level and firm.
If necessary,
use a sturdy board under the jack.

Changing a wheel
When you change a wheel, follow these­
quence described below step-by-step and in
exactly that order.
l. Activate the vehicle jack mode*

2. Remove the decorative wheel cover* . For
more details see also

or o page 267,
Wheels with wheel bolt caps.
3. Loosen the wheel bolts o page 268.
4. Locate the proper mounting point for the
jack and align the jack below that point

5. Raise the car with the jack o page 268.
6. Remove the wheel with the flat tire and
then install
the spare opage 270.
7. Tighten all wheel bolts lightly .
8.
Lower the vehicle with the jack .
9 . Use the wheel bolt w rench and
firmly
tighten all wheel bolts o page 268.
10. Replace the decorative wheel cover*.
11. Deactivate the vehicle jack mode * in the
MMI:
I CARI function button > (Ca r)* sys­
tems
control button > Servicing & checks
> Air susp.: jack mode > Off.
The vehicle jack mode* switches off automati­
ca lly at speeds above 6 mph (10 km/h) .
