As long as you do not activate the turn signal,
side assist
informs you about vehicles that are
detected and class ified as critical. The display
in the respective mirror turns on, but is d im. T
he display remains dim intentionally in the
information stage so that your view toward
the front is not disturbed .
Warning stage
If you activate the turn signal, s ide ass ist
warns you about vehicles that are detected
and class ified as critical. The display in the re­
spective mirror blinks brightly . If this hap­
pens, check traffic by glancing in the rearview
mirror and over your shoulder

In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
cr itical for a lane change even if it is still
somewhat far away. The faster a vehicle ap­
p roaches, the sooner the display in the exteri­
or m irror will t urn on.
@ Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling w ith you are indicated in the
exterior m irror if they are classified as cr itical
for a lane change. All vehicles detec ted by
side assist are indicated by the time they en­
ter your "blind spot", at the latest.

@ Veh icle s left behind
If you s low ly pass a vehicle that s ide assist has
detected (the difference in speed between the
vehicle and your vehicle is less than 9 mph (15 km/h)), the display in the exterior mirror
turns on as soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
The disp lay will not t urn on if you quickly pass
a vehicle that side assist has detected (the dif­
ference in speed between the vehicle and your
vehicle is greater than 9 mph (15 km/h)).
Functional limitation s
The radar senso rs are designed to detect the
left and right adjacent lanes when the road
lanes are the normal width. In certain situa­
tions, the disp lay in the exterior mirror may
turn on even though there is no vehicle locat­
ed in the area that is cr itical for a la ne change.
For example:
- if the lanes are narrow or if your are dr iving
on the edge of your lane.
If this is the case,
the system may have detected the vehicle in
another lane that is
not adjacent to your
current lane .
- if you a re driving through a curve. Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane ove r
from the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or d isp laced guard rails) .
- In poor weather conditions. The side assist
functions are l imited .
Do not cover the radar sensors <=>
fig. 104 with
stickers, depos its, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, because this will affect the funct ion. Do
not use s ide ass ist when towing a trailer. For
i nformation on cleaning, refer to<=>
page 196.

- Always pay attention to traffic and to t he
area around your ve hicl e. S ide assist can­
not replace a driver's attention. The driv­
er a lone is always responsible for lane
changes and similar driving mane uvers.

Driver messages
Applies to vehicles: with Audi side assist
If s ide ass ist switches off by itself, the LED in
the button turns off and a message will ap­
pear in the instrument cluster display:
Audi side assist unavailable: Sensors blocked
The radar sensors' vision is affected. Do not
cover the area in front of the sensors with bike
wheels, stickers, dirt or other objects. Clean
the area in front of the sensors, if necessary
c;.page 101, fig. 104.
Audi side assist: Currently unavailable
Side assist cannot be switched on temporarily
because there is a malfunc tion (for example,
the battery charge leve l may be too low) .
Audi side assist: System fault!
The system cannot guara ntee that it will de­
tect veh icles correctly and it is switched off .
The sensors have been displaced or are faulty.
H ave the system checked by an authorized
Aud i dealer or authorized Aud i Service Facility
soon.
Audi side assist: Unavailable when towing
Side assist sw itches off automatically when a
factory- insta lled trailer h itch is connected to
the electrical connector on the trailer. There is
no guarantee the system will switch off when
usi ng a retrofitted trailer hitch. Do not use
side assist when towing a trailer .

We recommend that you p ractice park ing with
the rear view camera in a traffic -free location
or parking lot to become familiar with the sys ­
tem, the orientation lines, and their function.
When doing th is, there shou ld be good light
and weather conditions.
In the MMI disp lay, objects or vehicles appear
closer or further away if:
- you are d riving in reverse gear from a level
surface onto an incline, or a downward
s lope,
- you are driving in reverse gear toward pro ­
truding objects,
- the vehicle is carrying too much load in the
rear .
The accu racy of the orienta tion lines and b lue
surfaces dimin ishes if:
- the rear view camera does not provide a rel i­
able image, for examp le, in poor visibility
condit ions or if the lens is dirty,
- the image on the screen is not visible due to
sun glare and reflect ion.

The rear view camera is located above the rear
license plate bracket . For the parking assist to

clean:
- Dampen the lens with a househo ld alcohol­
based glass cleaner, and clean the lens with
a dry cloth ¢(D .
- Remove snow with a hand brush and ice
preferably with a de -icing spray ¢(D .
A WARNING
-The parking aid cannot replace the driv­
er's attent ion. The dr iver alone is respon­
sible for parking and s imilar driving ma­
neuvers.
-Always keep your eyes on the vehicle 's
sur roundings, us ing the rea r view m irror
as we ll.
- Do not allow yourself to be distracted
from traffic by the rea r view came ra p ic­
tures.
- If the position and t he installation angle
of the camera has c hanged, for e xample,
after a rear end co llision, do not conti nue
to use the system for safety reasons .

- Low obstacles a lready s ignaled by a
wa rni ng can disappear from the system's
detec tion range as they are app roached
and w ill not con tinue to be signaled. Ob­
jects such as ba rrier chains, trailer draw
bars, thin painted vertica l poles or fen­

posing risk of damage.
- Never use warm or hot water to remove
snow or ice from the rear view came ra
lens -danger of crack format io n on the
lens !
- When cleaning the lens, never use prod­
ucts that are abrasive .
Switching on/off
Applies to vehicles: wit h parking system (rear, wit h rear
v iew camera)
The rear view camera switches on automati ­
cally together with the acoustic pork assist when you put the vehicle in reverse .
Switching on
"'Put the veh icle in reverse gear, the acoust ic
pa rk ing system wi th rear view camera is ac­

acoust ic park ing system is confirmed by a

Programming the transmitter (version B)

Programming: phase 1 on the control unit
1. Sw itch on the ig nit io n (do no t start the
engine ).
2. Press and hold bot h of the outer Home­
Link buttons
r=> page 115, fig. 116 until
the LED @ turns off completely (about
20
seconds). Th is procedure clears the stand­
ard codes that were set at the factory and
does
not need to be repeated agai n to
p rog ram the othe r buttons.
3 . Briefly press the Homelink button that
you would like to prog ram .
4 . Wai t unti l the LED @ beg ins to blink
q ui ckly . The Home Lin k modu le wi ll now
remai n in learning mode for
5 minutes .
5. Now stand in front of your vehicle with
the original hand transmitter for the ga­ rage door opener or for the device that
you would like to allocate to the Home­
Link button.

6 . Hold the orig inal hand t ransmitter some­
what towa rds the center o f you r vehicle 's
radiato r gr ille

7. Now activate (p ress) t he hand transmit ­
ter.
8 . Pay a ttention to the t urn sign als for yo ur
vehicle when activating the ha nd trans­
mitter . If t he emergency flashers b link
three times, the programming was suc­
cessful. If the emergency flasher only bli nks one t ime, the 5 minute t ime limit

for the adaptat ion has expired or the pro ­
gram ming was unsuccessful. Repeat the
programming from step 3 on the controls
o r se lect another distance from the radia­
tor grille.
9. If the garage door or other devices sti ll
fail to be activated w it h the Homelin k
control buttons after p rogramming is
comple ted, it is possib le tha t these sys­
tems might be w ork ing wi th a roll ing co de
ins tead of the normal fixed co de.

to the instructions mentioned above . Beg in
similar ly w ith the 3rd step if the program ­
m ing connection was successful for t he fi rst

Remote con trol units fo r garage door opene rs
in Canada are set to stop tra nsmitting radio
frequency signa ls after two seconds . This t ime
may not be suffic ient for the Homelink sys ­
tem to learn the radio frequency signa l. Per­
form all other steps as described above.
Erasing the buttons
.,. Switch on the ignition (do not sta rt the en ­
gi ne).
.,. Press and hold both o f the outer buttons un ­
til the LED@ turns off completely (abo ut
20 seconds) to e rase a ll of the buttons si­
m ultaneously .
.,. Programmed b uttons ca nnot be erased ind i­
vidua lly. Reprogram the butto ns if necessa­
ry .
Reprogramming the buttons
.,. Switch o n the ignition (do not start t he en­
gine) .
.,. To reprogram an individua l bu tto n, press
and hold the button unt il the LED @ starts
t o f lash quickly (a fter ab out ten seconds) .

A WARNING
Drivers who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be ser iously
injured by an airbag as it unfolds. To help
reduce the risk of serious personal injury :
- Always adjust the dr iver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least 10 inches (25 cm) between your breast­
bone and the steering wheel.
- Always hold the steering wheel on the
outside of the steering wheel rim with
your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posit ions to he lp red uce the risk of pe r­
sonal in jury if the drive r's airbag inflates.
- Never hold the steer ing whee l at the
12 o 'clock posit ion or w it h your hands at
other pos it ions inside the steering wheel
rim or on the stee ring wheel h ub. Hold­
ing the steering wheel the wrong way
can cause serious injuries to the hands,
arms and head i f the driver 's airbag de­
ploys.
- Pointing the steering whee l toward your
face decreases the ab ility o f the supp le­
menta l dr iver's airbag to protect you in a
co llision .
- Always s it in an upright position and nev­
er lean against or place any part of your
body too close to the a rea where the air ­
bags are located.
- Before driv ing, a lways ad just the front
seats and head restra ints properly and
make s ure that all passengers are prop­
er ly restrained.
- Never adjust the seats while the vehicle
is moving . Your seat may move unexpect­
edly and you could lose control of the ve­
hicle.
- Never drive with the backrest recl ined o r
t il ted far ba ck! T he farther the ba ck rests
are t ilted back, the greate r the ris k of in-

jury due to incorrect pos itioning of the
safety belt and improper seating posi ­
tion .

Proper seating position for the front
passenger
The proper front passenger seating position
is important for safe, relaxed driving .
For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom ­
mend that you adjust the seat for the front
passenger to the following position :
~ Move the front passenger seat back as far as
possible . There must be a m inimum of
1 0 inches (25 cm) between the breastbone
and the ins trument panel

~ Adjust the a ngle of the seatbac k so that it is
in an upr igh t position and yo ur back comes
in full contact wit h it whenever the vehicle is
moving.
~ Applies to vehicles with adjustab le head re­
stra ints: Adjust the head restraint so the up­

of your head. If that is not possib le, try to
adjust the head restraint so that it is as
close to this pos it ion as poss ible .

Front seat passengers w ho are unbelted,
out of posi tion or too close to the airbag
can be ser iously injured or killed by the air­
bag as it unfolds. To help reduce the risk of
serious personal injury:

the pedals or the ability to control the
vehicle.
- Never place or install floor mats or other
floor coverings on top of already insta l­
led floor mats. Additional floor mats and
other coverings will reduce the size of
the pedal area and interfere with the
pedals.
- Always property reinstall and secure floor
mats that have been taken out for clean­
ing.
- Always make sure that objects cannot fall into the driver footwell wh ile the ve­
hicle is moving. Objects can become
t rapped under t he brake pedal and accel­
erator peda l causing a loss of veh icle
control.
Stowing Luggage
Loading the luggage compartment
All luggage and other objects must be prop­
erly stowed and secured in the luggage com­
partment.

shift suddenly, changing vehicle handling
characteristics. Loose items can also increase
the risk of serious personal injury in a sudden
