Sw itching the i gni tion on /off
If you wou ld like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps :
• Insert the key into the ignition lock .
• Press the key briefly
with out pressing the
c lutch pedal (for man ua l transmissions) or
the brake peda l (for automatic transmis­
s ions) .
• To switch the igni tion off, press the key
again .
When starting the engine, ma jor e lectr ica l
loads are swi tched off temporarily .
You can on ly remove the key with the ignition
switched off.
I f the engine should not sta rt immed ia tely,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation .
- Never remove the ign ition key from the
ignition look whi le the vehicle is moving.
Otherw ise, the steering lock could sud­
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle . Otherwise, the
engine could be started or electr ica l
equipment such as the power w indows
c ou ld be operated. This can lead to seri­
o us inj ury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistan ce u nattended in the vehicle . The
doors c an be lo cked using the remo te
transmitter, preventing people from es­
caping from the vehicle o n their own in
the event of an eme rgency. Depending
on the time of year, people inside the ve- h
icle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatu res.
@ Note
Avoid high eng ine rpm, f ull throttle and
heavy engine loads unti l the engine has
r eached operating tempe rat ure -other­
wise you risk eng ine damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run w hile parked to
warm up. Begin driving immediately. This
reduces unnecessary emissions.

- If the key cannot be removed from the
ignition lock, you have to pull the me­
chanical key out of the master key in or­
der to be able to lock the vehi-

-After starting a cold engine, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be­
cause the oil pressure must first bu ild up
in the hydraulic valve ad justers. This is
normal and not a cause for concern.
- If you leave the veh icle with the ignition
switched on, the ignit ion w ill switch off
afte r a certain per iod of t ime . P lease
no te that electrical eq uipment such as
exterior ligh ts will sw itch off as well
when that happens .

Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key
Applies to vehicles: with ignition lock
You can use the emergency key as an ignition
key in an emergency.

Ste ering lo ck
The steering locks when yo u remove the ig ni­
tion key. The lo cked steering helps prevent ve ­
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unus ual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always
pa rk your vehicle with the selector lever
in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inad ­
verten tly roll away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preven ting people from es­
caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of an emergency . Depending

If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended period, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after the engine
is switched off -there is a risk of damaging
the engine . Allow the engine to run at idle
for about two minutes before switching it
off.

Switching the ignition on/off
If you would like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps :
.. Press the
!START ENGIN E STOP! button
without pressing the clutch pedal (for man ­
ual transmissions) or the brake pedal (for
automatic transmiss ions) .
.. To sw itch the ignition off, press the button
again. If
the engine should not start immediately,
the sta rting process is automatically stopped
afte r a short t ime. Repeat start ing procedure.
When sta rting the engine, major elect rical
loads are switched off temporar ily .
After a cold engine is started, there may be a
brief period of increased noise because oil
pressure must first build up in the hydrau lic
valve adjusters . This is norma l and not a cause
for concern .

accident.

- When the veh icle is locked, no one -par­
ticularly not children should remain in
the vehicle . Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency workers to get in­
to the vehicle -putting lives at risk .
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brak e is r ele ased automatically upon
star ting.

.. When you start to drive as usua l, the park ­
ing brake is automatically re leased and your
vehicle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signa l or stopping
in city traffic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the park ing brake can be ap­
plied. The vehicle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The park ing brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep with a drive range
engaged . As soon as you dr ive off as usual,
the park ing brake is released automatically
and the veh icle starts to move .
Starting on sl opes
When starting on incline s, the start ing ass ist
prevents the vehicle from unintentionally roll­
ing back. The braking force of the parking
b rake is not released until sufficient dr iving
fo rce has been bu ilt up at the whee ls.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iv­
er 's sa fety belt is engaged in the bu ck le.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
.. Keep the switch@¢ page 76, fig. 78 pulled
and depress the acce le rator . The park ing
brake stays applied and prevents the vehicle
from roll ing backward.
.. You can release the switch @once you are
sure that yo u are developing enough driving
force at the wheels by depressing the accel ­
erator.
Depending on the weight o f the rig (vehicle
and trai ler) and the severity of the incline, you
may roll backwards as you start . Yo u can pre­
vent roll ing backwards by holding the parking
brake switch @pulled out and accelerating -
just as you would when starting on a hill with a conventional hand brake . Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks .
.. In an emergency, pull the switch @

slow your vehicle down with the parking brake .
.. As soon as you re lease the switch @ or ac-
celerate, t he b ra ki ng pro cess stops.
If you pull the switch @and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy bra king funct ion is initiated . Th e ve hicl e is
braked at all fou r whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic brake sys tem. The brake performance
is similar to making an emergency stop¢,& .
In order not to a ct ivate the eme rgency brak­
ing by mis take, an audib le warning tone (buz­
zer) so unds when the switch @is pulled. As
soon as the switch @ is released, or the acce l­
erator pedal is depressed, emergency braking
stops.
A WARNING ,-
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the normal foot brake has fa iled or the brake pedal is obstructed .
Using the par king brake to pe rform eme r­
gency b raking will s low your veh icle down
as if you had made a full brake application.
The laws of phys ics cannot be suspended
even with ESC and its associated compo ­
nents (ABS, ASR, EDS) . In corners and
when road or weathe r cond itions are bad,
a full brake application can ca use the vehi ­
cle to sk id or the rear end to break away­
risking an accident.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
T he speed warn ing system warns if the driver
exceeds a previously sto red max imum speed .
A warning tone w ill sound as soon as the

You can also p ress the accelerator pedal down
to increase your speed , e .g. if you want to
pass someone. The speed yo u saved earlier
will resume as soon as you let off of the accel­
erator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by
6 mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 min utes,
the cruise control will be turned off tempora­ rily. The green symbol in the display turns
white . The saved speed remains the same .
Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.
" Switch on the ignition.
" Pull lever into pos ition

" Re lease the lever to save that speed.
This funct ion makes it possible, for example,
to save th e speed you want before driving on

Gearshift lever
Applies to vehicles: with manual transmission
The clutch pedal must be depressed all the
way before you can start the engine.
The manual transmission in your Audi is
equipped with an
interlock-feature .
• Depress the clutch pedal all the way.
• Start the engine with the gearshift lever in
Neutral and the clutch pedal depressed.
(D Note
Always depress the clutch pedal fully when
changing gears. Do not hold the vehicle on
a hill with the clutch pedal partially de­
pressed. This may cause premature clutch
wear or damage .
@ Tips
-Resting your hand on the gearshift lever
knob while driving will cause premature
wear in the transmission.
- The back-up lights go on when you sh ift
in to Reverse with the ignition on.

Engaging reverse gear (R)
• Move the shift lever all the way to the left,
press it down, then push i t forward . Especially
after driving forward, stop the vehi­
cle completely, shift into
Neutral and rest the
shift lever briefly in Neutral before shift ing in­
to
Reverse.
S tronic, tiptronic
Introduction
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic/tiptronic
T he automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatica lly depending on which drive
program is selected.
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transmission selects the most economical
driving mode. It will then change up early and
delay the downshifts to give better fuel econ­
omy .
T he transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a kick-down or when the driver uses a
sporty driving style characterized by quick ac­
ce lerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) c> page 86.
Various automatic transmissions may be in­
stalled, depending on the model:
S tronic transmission
The S tronic is a dual-clutch transmission.
Power is transferred using two clutches that
work independe ntly from one another. Th ey
replace the torque converter used in conven­
tional automatic transmissions and al low the
vehicle to acce lerate without a noticeable in­
terruption in tract ion.
tiptronic transmission
In the tiptronic transmission, power is trans­
f er red by a torque converter.

Selector lever positions
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic/t ipt ronic

The selector lever position engaged appears

P -Park
In th is selector lever position the transmis­
sion is mechanically locked. Engage P only
when the vehicle is
completely stopped¢ &

To shift in or out of position P, you must first
press and hold the brake pedal and then press
the release button in the selector lever handle
while moving the selector lever to or from P.
You can shift out of this position only with the ignition on.
R - Reverse
Select R only when the vehicle is at a full stop
and the eng ine is running at idle speed ¢ & in

page 85.
Before you move the selector lever to R, press
both the release button in the handle of the
selector lever
and the brake pedal at the same
time .
When the ignit ion is on, the backup l ights illu­
minate when the selector lever is moved into
R.
N -Neutral
The transmission is in neutra l in this position .
Shift to this position for standing with the
Transmission 83
brakes applied ¢ & in Driving the automatic
transmission on page 85.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), you m ust always apply
the footbrake before and whi le moving the
lever out of N .
DIS -Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S pos ition, the transmission can be
operated either in the norma l mode D or in
the sport mode S . To select the sport mode S ,
pull the selector lever back briefly. Pulling the
lever back again will se lect the normal mode
D . The inst rument cluster display shows the
selected driving mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the suitabl e gear ratio.
It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv­
ing style.
Select the
sport mode S for sporty driving.
The vehicle makes fu ll use of the engine's
powe r. Shifting may become noticeab le when
a ccelerating.
When the veh icle is stationary or at speeds
below
1 mph (2 km/h), you must always apply
the foot brake before and while mov ing the
lever to 0/S out of N.

Coasting downhill with the transm ission in
N and the engine not running will result in
damage to the automatic transmission
