In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
cr itical for a lane change even if it is still
somewhat far away. The fas ter a vehicle ap­
p roaches, the sooner the display in the exteri­
or m irror will t urn on.
@ Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling w ith you are indicated in the
exterior m irror if they are classified as cr itical
for a lane change. All vehicles detec ted by
side assist are indicated by the time they en­
ter your "blind spot", at the latest.

@ Veh icle s left behind
If you s low ly pass a vehi cle that s ide assist has
detected (the difference in speed between the
vehicle and you r vehicle is less than 9 mph
(15 km/h)), the display in the exterior mirror
turns on as soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
T he disp lay will not t urn on if you quickly pass
a vehicle that side assist has detected (the dif­
ference in speed between the veh icle and your
vehicle is greater than 9 mph (15 km/h)).
Functional limitations
The radar senso rs are designed to detect the
left and right adjacent lanes when the road
lanes are the normal width. In certain situa­
tions, the disp lay in the exterior mirror may
turn on even though there is no vehicle locat­
ed in the area that is cr itical for a la ne change.
For example:
- if the lanes are narrow or if your are dr iving
on the edge of your lane.
If this is the case,
the system may have detected the vehicle in
another lane that is
not adjacent to your
current lane .
- if you a re driving through a curve. Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane ove r
from the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or d isp laced guard rails) .
- In poor weather conditions. The side assist
functions are l imited .
Do not cover the radar sensors <=>
fig. 117 with
stickers, depos its, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, because this will affect the funct ion. Do
not use s ide ass ist when towing a trailer. For
i nformation on cleaning, refer to<=>
page 195.

Introduction
App lies to vehicles: with Audi drive select
Drive select provides the possib ility to exper i­
e nce diffe ren t types of vehi cle sett ings in o ne
ve hicl e. For ins tance, us ing t he three
Com­
fort , Auto and Dynamic modes, the driver can
switch from a sporty to a comfortab le drivi ng
mode with the press of a b utton.
A ddit ionally, in veh icles wi th MM I*, the vehi ­
cle setup for
Individual* mode can be c us­
tom ized by you. This makes it possib le to
comb ine settings such as a sporty engine tun ­
ing with comfortable steering.
A WARNING
Improper use of the A udi drive select can
cause collisions , ot her acc idents and se ri­
ous pe rsonal injury.
Description
App lies to vehicles: with Audi drive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on
the veh icle's features . However, the engin e,
automa tic t ransmissio n and s teeri ng a re a l­
ways involved.
-
Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode , the e ng ine and the
automatic t ransm ission respond quicke r or i n
a more ba la nced manne r to a cce le rator pedal
move ments. In t he sporty dynam ic mode, the
a ut om at ic t ra nsmissio n shifts at h igher R PMs.
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of stee ring effort
and steering ra tios . Ind irect steer ing that
moves easi ly, l ike the stee rin g in comfort
mode, is best su ite d t o long dr ive s on a high­
way. In co ntr ast, dynam ic mo de p rov ides
sporty, direct steering .
T he fo llow ing applies to vehicles with dynam ic
steer ing*: the stee ring ratio changes based on
ve hicl e spee d in order to maint ain op timum steering effort
for the drive r at all times . This
sets the stee ring to be less sens itive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle
control. At reduced speeds, however, steer ing
is more d irect in order to keep the steering ef­
fort as minima l as poss ible when the driver is
mane uveri ng the veh icle. At low and ave rage
speeds, dynamic steering addit iona lly pro­
vides more respon sive stee rin g pe rforma nce.
Adaptive dampers*
The adaptive dampers* use se nsors to record
informa tion regard ing steer ing movemen ts,
braking and acceleration o perations by the
drive r, road surfac e, d riv in g speed, and load.
T his makes it poss ible to adapt damp ing to
the driving si tua tion v irtu ally in real t ime.
Dr ive sele ct also makes i t possib le to sa tisfy
t h e desire fo r spo rty suspension ( Dynamic)
and comfortab le suspension (Comfort) with ­
o ut giving up ba lanced tuning (Auto) .
Sport differential*
As a component o f the all whee l dr ive sys tem
(quat tro)

dist ributes t he driving power to the rear ax le
depen ding on the sit uat io n. The distrib ution
of power var ies depending on the mode se­
lected. The goal is a high level of agility and
ability to accelerate on curves. T he ve hicle is
very res pons ive to stee ring .
Audi adaptive crui se control*
The behav ior when accelerating can be adjust­
ed from comf ortab le to sporty, depending on
t h e drive select mode. Adaptive cr uise control
also responds to the driv ing behavior of the
vehicle ahead in a mo re conservative o r spo rty
manner .
Engine sound*
The sound of the eng ine is adapted to these­
lected mode and ranges from subtle to sporty.

- In s ome models, the maximum vehicle
spee d can only be reached in the
Auto
and Dynamic modes.

Approaching another obstacle will result in
the distance warning sounding at the normal
volume aga in.
M alfunction s in the syst em
If a warning tone is audible for about five sec­
onds when you turn on the ignit ion, there is a
mal function in the system. Have the problem
corrected by your authorized Audi dealer.
Keep the sensors in the rear bumper clean and
free from ice so that the acoustic park assist
system can function properly.
A WARNING
- Senso rs have dead spaces in which ob­
jects cannot be detected. Be espec ially
alert for small children and animals,
since they are not a lways detected by the
sensors.
- The acoust ic park ing system is not a sub­
st itute for the driver's own caut ion and
alertness . Ultimate responsib ility always
remains with the driver during park ing
and simi la r maneuve rs. Always watch
w here you are driving.
- You should always adjust the vo lum e and
frequency of the warning tones so that
yo u can easily hear the a co ustic distance
warning even if the radio is p laying, the
air-conditioner blower is on High or there is a high leve l of outside noise.
- Check the settings w henever anyone
e lse has driven the vehicle before you .

l aye r of paint may not a lways be detect -ed by the system
. They can still damage
your vehicle without warning.

tic parking assist system can function proper ly .
Adjusting the warning tones

We recommend that you p ractice park ing with
the rear view camera in a traffic -free location
or parking lot to become familiar with the sys ­
tem, the orientation lines, and their function.
When doing th is, there shou ld be good light
and weather conditions.
In the MMI disp lay, objects or vehicles appear
closer or further away if:
- you are d riving in reverse gear from a level
surface onto an incline, or a downward
s lope,
- you are driving in reverse gear toward pro ­
truding objects,
- the vehicle is carrying too much load in the
rear .
The accu racy of the orienta tion lines and b lue
surfaces dimin ishes if:
- the rear view camera does not provide a rel i­
able image, for examp le, in poor visibility
condit ions or if the lens is dirty,
- the image on the screen is not visible due to
sun glare and reflect ion.

The rear view camera is located above the rear
license plate bracket . For the parking assist to
operate, the lens¢
fig. 124 must be kept
clean:
- Dampen the lens with a househo ld alcohol­
based glass cleaner, and clean the lens with
a dry cloth ¢(D .
- Remove snow with a hand brush and ice
preferably with a de -icing spray ¢(D .
A WARNING
-The parking aid cannot replace the driv­
er's attent ion. The dr iver alone is respon­
sible for parking and s imilar driving ma­
neuvers.
-Always keep your eyes on the vehicle 's
sur roundings, us ing the rea r view m irror
as we ll.
- Do not allow yourself to be distracted
from traffic by the rea r view came ra p ic­
tures.
- If the position and t he installation angle
of the camera has c hanged, for e xample,
after a rear end co llision, do not conti nue
to use the system for safety reasons .
H ave it chec ked by a qualified dea le rship.

- Low obstacles a lready s ignaled by a
wa rni ng can disappear from the system's
detec tion range as they are app roached
and w ill not con tinue to be signaled. Ob­
jects such as ba rrier chains, trailer d raw
bars, thin painted vertica l poles or fen­
ces may not be detected by the system,
posing risk of damage.
- Never use warm or hot water to remove
snow or ice from the rear view came ra
lens -danger of crack format io n on the
lens !
- When cleaning the lens, never use prod­
ucts that are abrasive .
Switching on/off
Applies to vehicles: wit h parking system (rear, wit h rear
v iew camera)
The rear view camera switches on automati ­
cally together with the acoustic pork assist when you put the vehicle in reverse .
Switching on
"'Put the veh icle in reverse gear, the acoust ic
pa rk ing system wi th rear view camera is ac­
tivated automatica lly. Act ivat io n of the
acoust ic park ing system is confirmed by a
brief acknowledgement sound . ..,.

Switching off
• Drive faster than 9 mph (15 km/h), or
• take the vehicle out of reverse gear. The
acoustic parking system is immediately de­
activated, and the rear view camera picture is deactivated automatically after a period
of about 15 seconds, or
• switch off the ignition.
The delay in deactivating the camera provides
an uninterrupted view behind the vehicle es­
pecially when maneuvering in tight parking
spaces and prevents the picture from turning
off the every time you sh ift out of reverse .
If the warning message appears in the display but not the rear view camera picture, read and
confirm the warning message . The acoustic
d istance signal is always active.
If you press a function button on the MMI
control console, the rear view camera picture
disappears . The rear view camera picture reap­
pears the next time you park.
Further information on the warning message
and the MMI control console can be found in
the MMI instruction booklet.
A WARNING
- Only use the rearview camera to assist
you if it shows a good, clear picture. For
example, the image may be affected by
the sun shining into the lens, dirt on the
lens or if there is a defect.
- Use the rearview camera only with the
rear lid completely closed. Make sure any
objects you may have mounted on the
rear lid do not block the rearview cam­
era.
(D Tips
- The rear v iew camera picture is available
as soon as the MMI Display or the MMI is
switched on, or the start-up phase is
completed.
- The sensors must be kept clean and free
of snow and ice for the park assist to op­
erate.

Reverse Parking

Parking mode 1 can be used when parking in
a garage or parking space.

• Turn the steering wheel until the orange ori­
entation lines (!) appear in the parking spot

Each marking corresponds to 3 ft (1 m). The
blue area represents an extens ion of the ve­
hicle's outline by approximately 16 ft (5 m)
to the rear.
• Wh ile driving in reverse gear, adjust the
steer ing whee l angle to fit the parking space
with the aid of the orange orientation lines

A WARNING

Parallel Parking
Applies to vehicles: wit h parking system (rear, with rear
v iew camera)
Use parking mode 2 to help you park on the
edge of a street.

When there is an obstacle (such as a wall)
next to the parking spot, choose a spot with
more space on the sides. Position the long
side of the blue area so that there is sufficient
space from the curb . The area must not be on
the curb . You w ill also need to start turning
the steeri ng whee l much ear lie r. T he re should
be a suffic ien t amo unt of space between the
curb and the b lue curve, and the blue c urve

Always observe the information

The information in this section applies to all
model versions of your vehicle . Some of the
features described in this sections may be
standard equipment on some models, or may
be optional equipment on others. If you are
not sure, ask your authorized Audi dealer.
A WARNING
- Always make sure that you follow the in­
structions and heed the WARNINGS in
this Manual. It is in your interest and in
the interest of your passengers.
- Always keep the complete Owner's Liter­
ature in your Audi when you lend or sell
your vehicle so that this important infor­
mation will always be available to the
driver and passengers.
- Always keep the Owner's literature handy
so that you can find it easily if you have
questions.
Safety equipment
The safety features are part of the occupant
restraint system and work together to help
reduce the risk of injury in a wide variety of
accident situations .
Your safety and the safety of your passengers
should not be left to chance. Advances in
technology have made a variety of features
available to help reduce the risk of injury in an

accident. The following is a list of just a few of
the safety features in your Audi :
- sophisticated safety belts for driver and all
passenger seating positions,
- belt force limiters for the front seats,
- belt pretensioners for the seats,
- head restraints for each seating position,
- front airbags,
- side airbags in the front seats,
- special LATCH anchorages for child re-
straints,
- adjustable steering column.
These individual safety features, can work to­
gether as a system to help protect you and
your passengers in a wide range of accidents.
These features cannot work as a system if
they are not always correctly adjusted and cor­
rectly used.
Safety is everybody's responsibility!
Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody's job! Vehide and occv­
pant safety always depends on the informed
and careful driver.
For your safety and the safety of your passen­
gers,
before driving always:
"'Make sure that all lights and signals are op ­
erating correctly .
"'Make sure that the tire pressure is correct.
"'Make sure that all windows are clean and af­
ford good visibility to the outside.
"'Secure all luggage and other items carefully
