PRE-OPERATION CHECKS
EBU19224Inspect your vehicle each time you use it to make sure the vehicle is in safe operating condition. Always
follow the inspection and maintenance procedures and schedules described in the Owner’s Manual.
WARNING
EWB00481Failure to inspect or maintain the vehicle properly increases the possibility of an accident or equip-
ment damage. Do not operate the vehicle if you find any problem. If a problem cannot be corrected
by the procedures provided in this manual, have the vehicle inspected by a Yamaha dealer. Before using this vehicle, check the following points:
ITEMROUTINE PAGE
Fuel Check fuel level in fuel tank, and add recommended fuel if neces-
sary.
Check fuel line for leakage. Correct if necessary. 4-7, 5-3
Engine oil Check oil level in engine, and add recommended oil to specified lev-
el if necessary.
Check ATV for oil leakage. Correct if necessary. 5-3, 8-11
Transmission oil Check oil level in transmission case, and add recommended oil to
specified level if necessary.
Check ATV for oil leakage. Correct if necessary. 5-3, 8-14

EBU19541Fuel Make sure that there is sufficient fuel in the tank.
(See page 4-7.)EBU19560Engine oil Make sure that the engine oil is at the specified lev-
el. Add oil as necessary. (See page 8-11.)EBU19580Transmission oil Make sure that the transmission oil is at the speci-
fied level. Add oil as necessary. (See page 8-14.)EBU19652Front and rear brakes Brake levers●Check for correct free play in the brake levers. If
the free play is incorrect, adjust it. (See pages
8-29 and 8-33.)●Check operation of the levers. They should
move smoothly and there should be a firm feel-
ing when the brake is applied. If not, have the
ATV checked by a Yamaha dealer.Brake operation
Test the brakes at slow speed after starting out to
make sure they are working properly. If the brakes
do not provide proper braking performance, check
the brake shoes for wear. (See page 8-28.)
EBU19761Throttle lever Check the operation of the throttle lever. It must
open smoothly and spring back to the idle position
when released. Have a Yamaha dealer correct if
necessary.EBU19770Drive chain Check the condition of the drive chain and check
the drive chain slack. Lubricate and adjust the
drive chain as necessary. (See page 8-34.)EBU19794Tires Check tire pressure regularly to make sure it is at
the recommended specifications. Also check for
wear and damage.

85. Clean the oil strainer with solvent.
6. Apply a thin coat of clean engine oil to a new
O-ring.
7. Install the oil strainer, the compression spring, the new O-ring and the engine oil drain bolt.
Tighten the engine oil drain bolt to the speci-
fied torque. NOTICE: Before installing the
engine oil drain bolt, be sure to install the
O-ring, compression spring and oil strain-
er.
[ECB00321]
8. Refill with the specified amount of the recom- mended engine oil, and then install and tight-
en the engine oil filler cap.TIPBe sure to wipe off spilled oil on any parts after the
engine and exhaust system have cooled down.NOTICEECB00330●Do not use oils with a diesel specification of
“CD” or oils of a higher quality than speci-
fied. In addition, do not use oils labeled “EN-
ERGY CONSERVING II” or higher.●Make sure that no foreign material enters the
crankcase.

85. Pour the recommended type of oil in the trans-
mission oil filler hole until it flows out of the
check screw hole.
6. Tighten the oil check screw to the specified torque.
7. Check the oil filler bolt gasket for damage, and replace it if necessary. 8. Install the transmission oil filler bolt and its
gasket, and then tighten the bolt to the speci-
fied torque.
To change the transmission oil 1. Place the ATV on a level surface.
2. Start the engine, warm it up for several min- utes, and then turn it off.
3. Place an oil pan under the transmission to col- lect the used oil.
4. Remove the transmission oil filler bolt, the transmission oil drain bolt and their gasket to
drain the oil from the transmission case.

essary. If a cable is damaged or does not move
smoothly, have a Yamaha dealer check or replace
it.
WARNING
EWB02581●Inspect cables frequently and replace if dam-
aged. Corrosion can result when the cable
sheaths become damaged, and cables can
also become frayed or kinked, which could
restrict the operation of controls and lead to
an accident or injury.●Always make sure all control cables work
smoothly before you begin riding in cold
weather. If the control cables are frozen or do
not work smoothly, you could be unable to
control the ATV, which could lead to an acci-
dent or collision.
EBU28702Checking and lubric
ating the front and
rear brake levers The operation of the front and rear brake levers
should be checked before each ride, and the lever
pivots should be lubricated if necessary.

EBU25092Lubricating the steering shaft The steering shaft must be lubricated by a Yamaha
dealer at the intervals specified in the periodic
maintenance and lubrication chart.TIPFor parts equipped with a grease nipple, use a
grease gun.
EBU2512ABattery The battery is located under the seat. (See page
4-10.)
A poorly maintained battery will corrode and dis-
charge quickly. The electrolyte level, battery lead
connections and breather hose routing should be
checked before each ride and at the intervals
specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrica-
tion chart.
WARNING
EWB02160Battery electrolyte is poisonous and danger-
ous, as it contains sulfuric acid, which can
cause severe burns. Avoid contact with skin,
eyes or clothing. Always shield your eyes
when working near batteries.
Antidote:
EXTERNAL: Flush with water.
INTERNAL: Drink large quantities of water or
milk. Follow with milk of magnesia, beaten egg
or vegetable oil. Call a physician immediately.
EYES: Flush with water for 15 minutes and get
prompt medical attention.
Recommended lubricant:
Lithium-soap-based grease
