Inserting and removing the remote key

Inserting the remote key1
Holding the end of the remote key with the
base of the key blade, insert the remote key
into the ignition slot as shown in the illustration
and press it in as far as possible.
CAUTION
Foreign objects in the ignition slot can
impair function or cause damage.
Removing the remote keyThe remote key can be removed from the igni-
tion slot by pulling it out.
Functions
The remote key has 3 modes: 0, I, and II that
can be used without starting the engine. The
following table shows examples of which func-
tions are available in the respective modes.
NOTE
To access ignition modes I or II without star-
ting the engine, the brake pedal must not be
depressed.

Ignition mode 0–The vehicle is unlocked.
Ignition mode I–With the remote key fully pressed into the
ignition slot1, press START/STOP
ENGINE briefly.
Ignition mode II–With the remote key fully pressed into the
ignition slot1, press START/STOP
ENGINE for approximately 2 seconds.
Returning to mode 0To return to mode 0 from mode II or I, press
START/STOP ENGINE briefly.

CAUTION
In the following situations, it may be neces-
sary to switch between high and low beams
manually:
•In heavy fog or rain
•In blowing snow or slush
•In bright moonlight
•In freezing rain
•In areas with dim street lighting
•When oncoming vehicles have dim front
lighting
•If there are pedestrians on or near the
road
•If there are reflective objects, such as
signs, near the road
•When oncoming vehicles' lights are
obscured by e.g., fences, bushes, etc.
•When there are vehicles on connecting
roads
•At the top of hills or in dips in the road
•In sharp curves
See page158 for more information about the
camera's limitations.
Tunnel detection (standard on models
with a rain sensor)
The optional rain sensor reacts to the change
in lighting conditions when, for example, the
vehicle is driven into a tunnel. If the daytime
running lights have been deactivated, tunnel
detection will activate the low beam headlights
while the vehicle is in the tunnel. The low
beams will be switched off approx.
20 seconds after the vehicle leaves the tunnel.
The rain sensor does not have to be activated
for tunnel detection to function.
Active Bending Lights (ABL)*
Headlight pattern with the Active Bending Light

When this function is activated, the headlight
beams adjust laterally to help light up a curve
according to movements of the steering wheel
(see the right-pointing beam in the illustration).
ABL is activated automatically

Glove compartment lightingThe glove compartment lighting switches on/
off automatically when the lid is opened/
closed.
Overhead courtesy lightingThe passenger compartment lighting is
switched on and off automatically when button
(3) is in the neutral position.
The lighting comes on and remains on for
30 seconds if:
•the vehicle is unlocked from the outside
with the key or remote control
•the engine is switched off and the ignition
is in mode 0.
The lighting switches off when:
•the engine is started
•the vehicle is locked from the outside.
The lighting comes on and remains on for two
minutes if one of the doors is open.
The passenger compartment lighting can be
switched on and off manually within 30 minutes
after the vehicle has been unlocked.
If the lighting is switched on manually and the
vehicle is locked, the courtesy lighting will
switch off automatically after one minute.
Trunk lightingThe trunk lighting comes on automatically
when the trunk lid is opened.
Home safe lighting
When you leave your vehicle at night, you can
make use of the home safe lighting function to
illuminate the area in front of the vehicle.
1. Remove the key from the ignition slot to put
the ignition in mode 0 (see page 83 for
information about the ignition modes).
2. Pull the turn signal lever as far as possible
towards the steering wheel and release it.
3. Exit the vehicle and lock the doors.
The headlights, parking lights, turn signals,
lights in the door mirrors, license plate lights,
and footwell lighting will illuminate and remain
on for 30
3, 60 or 90 seconds. The time interval
can be set in MY CAR under Settings

Approach lighting
Approach lighting is activated by pressing the
approach light button on the remote key (see
the illustration on page 55).
When the function has been activated, the
parking lights, indicator lights, door mirror
lights, license plate lighting, dome lighting and
door step lighting come on.
The time interval for this lighting can be set by
pressing MY CAR and going to Car settings

Rearview mirror with compass.
The rearview mirror has an integrated display
that shows the compass direction in which the
vehicle is pointing. Eight different directions are
shown with the abbreviations:
N (north), NE(north east), E (east), SE (southeast), S (south),SW (southwest), W (west) and NW (northwest).
The compass is displayed automatically when
the vehicle is started or in ignition mode II. To
switch the compass on/off use a pen or similar
object and press in the button on the rear side
of the mirror.
CalibrationThe compass will need to be calibrated if the
vehicle is driven into a new magnetic zone (see
the magnetic zones on the map at the end of
this section). To do so:1. Stop the vehicle in a large open area, safely
out of traffic and away from steel structures
and high-tension electrical wires.
2. Start the vehicle.
NOTE
For best results from calibration, switch off
all electrical equipment in the vehicle (cli-
mate system, windshield wipers, audio sys-
tem, etc.) and make sure that all doors are
closed.
3. Using a pen or similar object, press and
hold the button on the rear side of mirror
until
C is shown again in the mirror (after
approx. 6 seconds).
4.
Drive as usual.
C disappears from the dis-
play when calibration is complete.
Alternative calibration method:
Drive slowly in a circle at a speed of no
more than 5 mph (8 km/h) until
C disap-
pears from the display when calibration is
complete.

The earth is divided into 15 magnetic zones.
The correct zone must be selected for the com-
pass to work correctly.
1.
Put the ignition in mode II.
2. Using a pen or similar object, press and
hold the button on the rear side of mirror
for at least 3 seconds. The number for the
current area will be shown.
3. Press the button repeatedly until the num-
ber for the required geographic area
(1 – 15) is shown.
4. The display will revert to showing the com-
pass direction after several seconds.

HomeLink® Wireless Control System*

Introduction
The HomeLink1 Wireless Control System pro-
vides a convenient way to replace up to three
hand-held radio-frequency (RF) transmitters
used to activate devices such as gate opera-
tors, garage door openers, entry door locks,
security systems, even home lighting. Addi-
tional HomeLink information can be found on
the Internet at www.homelink.com or by phon-
ing the hotline at 1–800–355–3515.
WARNING
•If you use HomeLink to open a garage
door or gate, be sure no one is near the
gate or door while it is in motion.
•When programming a garage door
opener, it is advised to park outside of
the garage.
•Do not use HomeLink with any garage
door opener that lacks safety stop and
reverse features as required by U.S.
federal safety standards (this includes
any garage door opener model manu-
factured before April 1, 1982). A garage
door that cannot detect an object - sig-
naling the door to stop and reverse -
does not meet current U.S. federal
safety standards. For more information,
contact HomeLink at:

Retain the original transmitter of the RF device
you are programming for use in other vehicles
as well as for future HomeLink programming. It
is also suggested that upon the sale of the
vehicle, the programmed HomeLink buttons be
erased for security purposes. Refer to “Reset-
ting HomeLink Buttons” on page 110.
Programming HomeLink
NOTE
Some vehicles may require the ignition to be
switched on or be in the “accessories” posi-
tion for programming and/or operation of
HomeLink. It is also recommended that a
new battery be placed in the hand-held
transmitter of the device being programmed
to HomeLink for quicker training and accu-
rate transmission of the radio-frequency
signal. The HomeLink buttons must be reset
first. When this has been completed, Home-
link is in learning mode so that you can per-
form programming.
1. Position the end of your hand-held trans-
mitter 1–3 inches (5–14 cm) away from the
HomeLink button you wish to program
while keeping the indicator light in view.
2. Simultaneously press and hold both the
chosen HomeLink and hand-held transmit-
ter buttons until the HomeLink indicator
light changes from a slow to a rapidly blink-
ing light. Now you may release both the
HomeLink and hand-held transmitter but-
tons.

NOTE

function for 30 minutes after the driver's
door has been opened.
Resetting HomeLink Buttons
Use the following procedure to reset (erase
programming) from the three HomeLink but-
tons (individual buttons cannot be reset but
can be “reprogrammed” as outlined in the fol-
lowing section):
1. Press and hold the two outer HomeLink
buttons until the indicator light begins to
flash.
2. Release both buttons.
> HomeLink is now in the training (or
learning) mode and can be programmed
at any time beginning with “Program-
ming” - step 1.
Reprogramming a Single HomeLink
Button
To program a device to HomeLink using a
HomeLink button previously trained, follow
these steps:
1. Press and hold the desired HomeLink but-
ton. DO NOT release the button.
2. The indicator light will begin to flash after
20 seconds. Without releasing the Home-
Link button, proceed with “Programming”
- step 1.
