come into contact with dry grass, brush, spilled fuel, oil, or other material that can catch fire.
x A broken down vehicle presents a high accident risk for itself and others. Switch on
emergency flashers and set up a warning triangle to warn oncoming traffic.

High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights provide bright, uniform lighting to help you see and be
seen. The light comes from an electric arc between two electrodes in the gas-filled bulb. Over time, the
electrodes can wear down and the gap between them will get wider. The HID lamp’s control unit then
increases the voltage to keep the arc’s brightness constant. However, the commonly called “Xenon”
bulbs will also ultimately burn out. Before they burn out, HID lamps can flicker. A message will then
appear in the MFI. This is your reminder to see an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized
Volkswagen Service facility to check the headlights.

WARNING
Windshield washer fluid without enough frost protection can freeze on the windshield and
reduce visibility.
x Use the windshield washer system with enough frost protection for winter temperatures.
x Never use the windshield wipers/washers when it is freezing without first defrosting the
windshield. The washer solution may freeze on the windshield and reduce visibility.
WARNING
Worn or dirty wiper blades reduce visibility and increase the risk of accidents and severe
injuries.
x Always replace wiper blades that are worn, damaged, or do not keep the windshield clear.
NOTICE
To help prevent damage to the wiper blades and the wiper motor when it is cold outside,
always make sure that blades are not frozen to the windshield before operating the wipers.
Using the windshield wiper service position can be helpful in cold weather so the wipers do not
freeze to the windshield

The braking assistance systems are the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), Brake Assist System
(BAS), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) and Electronic Stability Control
(ESC).

x If the brake warning light "2!+% or Hdoes not go out, or comes on when driving, either the
brake fluid level in the reservoir is too low or there is a fault in the brake system. Stop the
vehicle as soon as you can do so safely and get expert assistance, Brake fluid.
x If the brake warning light "2!+% or Hcomes on at the same time as the ABS warning
light !"3 or Jj, the ABS may not be working properly. This could cause the rear wheels to
lock up relatively quickly during braking. Rear wheel brake lock-up can cause loss of vehicle
control.
x If you believe the vehicle is safe to drive, drive slowly and very carefully to the nearest
authorized Volkswagen dealer, authorized Volkswagen Service Facility, or other qualified
workshop and have the brake system inspected. Avoid sudden hard braking and steering.
x If the ABS indicator light !"3 or Jj does not go out, or if it comes on while driving, the
ABS system is not working properly. The vehicle can then be stopped only with the standard
brakes (without ABS). You will not have the protection ABS provides. Contact your
authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility as soon as
possible.
x If the symbol "2!+% 7%!2 or Ilights up in the instrument cluster display, whether alone or
together with a text message, immediately contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer or
authorized Volkswagen Service Facility to have the brake pads checked and, if necessary,

WARNING
Improper refueling or handling of fuel is dangerous and can cause fire, explosion, and severe
burns.
x Always make sure that the fuel filler cap is screwed on all the way. This helps keep fuel
from spilling out or evaporating.
x Fuel is highly flammable and explosive; it can cause severe burns and other severe
injuries.
x Failure to shut the engine off while refueling and/or to insert the pump nozzle all the way
into the fuel filler neck can cause fuel to overflow and to spray out. Fuel spray and
overflowing fuel are dangerous because they can cause fire and serious personal injury.
x During refueling, the engine and the ignition must be switched off for safety reasons.
x Never use a cellular telephone, CB radio, or other radio equipment while refueling. The
electromagnetic radiation can cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors and cause a fire.
x Never get back into your vehicle while refueling. If in exceptional circumstances you must
get back in your vehicle while refueling, make certain that you close the door and touch metal
to discharge static electricity before touching the filler nozzle again. This helps avoid the
build-up of static electricity, which can cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors released
during refueling.
x Never smoke or have an open flame (or sparks, cigarettes, or other smoldering objects)
anywhere in or near your vehicle when refueling or filling a portable fuel container.
x Follow all safety instructions and procedures that apply at the service station where you
refuel.
x Never spill fuel in the vehicle or the luggage compartment.
