Driving
Modes can be changed by pressing the engine switch with brake
pedal (Multidrive and multi-mode manual transmission) or clutch
pedal (manual transmission) released. (The mode changes each time
the switch is pressed.)

Auto power off function
Vehicles with a Multidrive
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than 20 minutes or IGNI-
TION ON mode (the engine is not running) for more than an hour with the
shift lever in P, the engine switch will automatically turn off.
Vehicles with a multi-mode manual transmission or manual transmission
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than 20 minutes or IGNI-
TION ON mode (the engine is not running) for more than an hour, the engine
switch will automatically turn off.
However, this function cannot entirely prevent 12-volt battery discharge. Do
not leave the vehicle with the engine switch in ACCESSORY or IGNITION
ON mode for long periods of time when the engine is not running.

If the engine does not start
The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. (P. 91)
Contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified
and equipped professional.
Vehicles with a Multidrive: Check that the shift lever is securely set in P. The
engine may not start if the shift lever is displaced out of P.
Vehicles without a multi-information display
The smart entry & start system indicator light (green) will flash quickly.
Vehicles with a multi-information display
“SHIFT TO P POSITION TO START” will be displayed on the multi-infor-
mation display.
Steering lock
After turning the engine switch off and opening and closing the doors, the
steering wheel will be locked due to the steering lock function. Operating the
engine switch again automatically cancels the steering lock.

Shifting the shift lever
Shift position uses
*1: The most appropriate gear position is automatically selected according to
operation of the accelerator pedal and vehicle speed.
*2: A gear position must be selected manually. However, the gear position
may automatically be changed down optimally according to vehicle speed.

If the parking brake is set when the shift lever is in a position other than
N with engine running
When the driver’s door is opened
A buzzer will sound and the gear position will automatically change to N in
10 seconds.
When the driver’s door is closed
A buzzer will sound and the gear position will automatically change to N in
90 seconds.
If the M indicator does not come on even after shifting the shift lever to M
This may indicate a malfunction in the multi-mode manual transmission sys-
tem. Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer,
or another duly qualified and equipped professional immediately.
(In this situation, the vehicle will operate as if the shift lever is in E.)
If the N indicator is flashing
When shifting the shift lever:
Shift the shift lever to N. Wait a few seconds and shift the shift lever to the
desired position.
When the engine is turned off:
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system:
Turn the engine switch to the “ON” position and shift the shift lever to N, and
then to the desired position.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system:
Turn the engine switch to IGNITION ON mode and shift the shift lever to N,
and then to the desired position.
If the indicator still blinks after the above operations, shift the shift lever to N
and start the engine. Then, shift the shift lever to the desired position.
If the N indicator is flashing and the warning buzzer is beeping
Shift the shift lever to N, and then to E, M or R.
CAUTION
Gear Shift Indicator display
For safety, the driver should not look only at the display. Refer to the display
when it is safe to do so while considering actual traffic and road conditions.
Failure to do so may lead to an accident.

Fully depress the clutch pedal before operating the shift lever, and
then release it slowly.
Shift the shift lever to R while lift-
ing up the ring section.

To change the set speed, operate the lever until the desired set speed
is obtained.
Increases the speed
Decreases the speed
Fine adjustment: Momentarily
move the lever in the desired direc-
tion.
Large adjustment: Hold the lever in
the desired direction.
The set speed will be increased or decreased as follows:
Fine adjustment: By approximately 1.6 km/h (1 mph) each time the lever is
operated.
Large adjustment: The set speed can be increased or decreased continu-
ally until the lever is released.
Pulling the lever toward you
cancels the constant speed
control.
The speed setting is also canceled
when the brakes are applied or the
clutch pedal (manual transmission)
is depressed.
Pushing the lever up resumes
the constant speed control.
Resuming is available when the
vehicle speed is more than approx-
imately 40 km/h (25 mph).

When the rear Toyota parking
assist-sensor’s warning buzzer
sounds continuously, com-
pletely stop the vehicle immedi-
ately.
The multi-information display will
change when the warning buzzer
starts sounding continuously.
Except hybrid model: Shift the shift lever to D (Multidrive), E, M
(multi-mode manual transmission) or 1 (manual transmission).
Hybrid model: Shift the shift position to D.
While the steering wheel is turning, keep the vehicle at a complete stop.
When the steering wheel stops turning, move the vehicle forward slowly
while checking the safety of the area in front of the vehicle.
When the front Toyota parking
assist-sensor’s warning buzzer
sounds continuously, com-
pletely stop the vehicle immedi-

Driving
Perform the following according to the driving conditions:
Do not try to forcibly open a window or move a wiper that is frozen.
Pour warm water over the frozen area to melt the ice. Wipe away
the water immediately to prevent it from freezing.
To ensure proper operation of the climate control system fan,
remove any snow that has accumulated on the air inlet vents in
front of the windshield.
Check for and remove any excess ice or snow that may have accu-
mulated on the exterior lights, vehicle’s roof, chassis, around the
tires or on the brakes.
Remove any snow or mud from the bottom of your shoes before
getting in the vehicle.
Accelerate the vehicle slowly, keep a safe distance between you and
the vehicle ahead, and drive at a reduced speed suitable to road con-
ditions.
Park the vehicle and move the shift lever to P (Multidrive), R (multi-
mode manual transmission or manual transmission) or shift position to
P (hybrid transmission) without setting the parking brake. The parking
brake may freeze up, preventing it from being released. If necessary,
block the wheels to prevent inadvertent sliding or creeping.
