The rear side lights and the licence plate lighting have several light bulbs. The
warning light  only lights up if all bulbs in the parking light (in one rear light)
or the licence plate lighting are faulty 1)
. For this reason, regular check that
these light bulbs are working correctly.
 Exhaust inspection system
Read and observe
on page 30 first.
If the warning light 
illuminates , there is a fault in the exhaust inspection
system. The system allows the vehicle to run in emergency mode.
Seek assistance from a specialist garage immediately.
 Glow plug system (diesel engine)
Read and observe
on page 30 first.
The warning light 
illuminates after the ignition has been turned on. Once
the light has gone out, the engine can be started immediately.
If the warning light 
does not illuminate or does not illuminate continuous-
ly , there is a fault in the glow plug system.
If the warning light  begins
to flash while driving, while driving, a fault exists
in the engine control. The system allows the vehicle to run in emergency
mode.
Seek assistance from a specialist garage immediately.
 Engine performance check (petrol engine)
Read and observe
on page 30 first.
If the warning light 
illuminates , there is a fault in the engine control. The
system allows the vehicle to run in emergency mode.
Seek assistance from a specialist garage immediately.
 Diesel particle filter (diesel engine)
Read and observe
on page 30 first.
The diesel particulate filter separates the soot particles from the exhaust. The soot particles collect in the diesel particulate filter where they are burnt on a
regular basis.
If the warning light 
illuminates , rust has accumulated in the filter.
To clean the filter, and where traffic conditions permit »
, drive as follows for
at least 15 minutes or until the indicator light 
goes out.
4th or 5th gear engaged (automatic transmission: position S).
Vehicle speed at least 70 km/h.
Engine speed between 1,800-2,500 rpm.
If the filter is properly cleaned, the warning icon 
goes out .
If the filter is not properly cleaned, the warning light does 
not go out and
the warning light  begins to
flash.
The following message is shown in the MAXI DOT display. Diesel particulate filter: Log book!
The system allows the vehicle to run in emergency mode. After switching the
ignition off and on again the indicator light, the indicator light  also
illumi-
nates .
Seek assistance from a specialist garage immediately.
WARNING■ The diesel particulate filter reaches very high temperatures - there is a
fire hazard and serious injury could be caused. Therefore, never stop the
vehicle at places where the underside of your vehicle can come into contact
with flammable materials such as dry grass, undergrowth, leaves, spilled
fuel or such like.■
Always adjust your speed to suit weather, road, region and traffic condi-
tions. The recommendations indicated by the warning light must not tempt
you to disregard the national regulations for road traffic. 

Lever positions

Main beam
The main beam can only be switched on when the low beam lights are on.
When the high beam or headlight flasher is on, the warning light  lights up in
the instrument cluster.
Flashing
When the left flashing light is switched on, the warning light  flashes in the
instrument cluster.
When the right flashing light is switched on, the warning light  flashes in the
instrument cluster.
The flashing light is turned on even before the upper and lower pressure point.
This is advantageous in some manoeuvres. For example, when changing lanes
hold the control lever of each pressure point.
The turn signal light switches itself off automatically when driving around a
curve or after making a turn.
The warning light flashes at twice its normal rate if a bulb for the turn signal
light fails.
“Convenience turn signal”
If you only wish to flash three times, briefly push the lever to the upper or low-
er pressure point and release again.WARNINGOnly turn on the main beam or the headlight flasher if other road users will
not be dazzled.
Note
The headlight flasher can be operated even if the ignition is switched off.

If the light switch is in position 

number plate lights are switched on or off automatically.
Switching on/off of the light is regulated on the basis of data gathered by the
sensor fitted in the holder of the rear-view mirror below the windscreen.
If the light switch is in position 
, the lettering 
illuminates next to the
light switch. If the light is switched on automatically, the symbol 
next to the
light switch also lights up.
Automatic driving light control during rain
The daytime running lights are switched on automatically if the following con-
ditions are met.

Body repairs

Fire extinguisher
The fire extinguisher is attached by two straps in a holder underneath the driv-
er's seat.
Removing/attaching

Loosen the two straps by pulling the buckles in the direction of the ar-
row » Fig. 136 .

Remove the fire extinguisher.
Follow these steps in the reverse order for attachment.
Please read carefully the instructions which are attached to the fire extin-
guisher.
The fire extinguisher must be checked by an authorised person once a year.
The national legal requirements must be observed.
WARNINGThe fire extinguisher must always be secured safely so that they do not
come loose when making an emergency braking or in a vehicle collision
which could cause injuries to occupants.

■ The fire extinguisher must comply with national legal requirements.■Pay attention to the expiration date of the fire extinguisher. Proper function-
ing of the fire extinguisher is not assured once it has passed its expiry date.■
The fire extinguisher is part of the scope of delivery in certain countries only.

Vehicle tool kit
The vehicle tool kit and the jack with sticker are housed in a plastic box in the
spare wheel or in the storage space for the spare wheel. There is also space
here for the removable ball rod for the trailer towing device. The box is attach-
ed with a strap on the spare wheel.
Depending on the equipment, not all the components listed in the on-board
tool kit have to be contained in it.
