Mobile phones and two-way radio systems
First read and observe the introductory information given on page 86.
ŠKODA permits the operation of mobile phones and two-way radio systems with
a professionally installed external aerial and a maximum transmission power of
up to 10 watts.
Please consult a ŠKODA Partner for information about the possibility of installing
and operating mobile phones and two-way radio systems with a transmission
power of more than 10 W.
Operating mobile phones or two-way radio systems may interfere with the func-tionality of the electronic systems in your vehicle.
The possible reasons for this are. › no external aerial.
› external aerial incorrectly installed.
› transmission power greater than 10 watts.
WARNING■
Concentrate fully at all times on your driving! As the driver you are fully re-
sponsible for road safety. Use the telephone system only to such an extent that you are in full control of your vehicle at any time.■
The national regulations for using a mobile phone in a vehicle must be ob-
served.
■
If a mobile phone or a two-way radio system is operated in a vehicle without
an external aerial or an external aerial which has been installed incorrectly,
this can increase the strength of the electromagnetic field inside the vehicle.
■
Two-way radio systems, mobile phones or mounts must not be installed on
airbag covers or within the immediate deployment range of the airbags.
■
Never leave a mobile phone on a seat, on the dash panel or in another area,
from which it can be thrown during a sudden braking manoeuvre, an accident
or a collision - risk of injury.
■
The Bluetooth ®
function must be switched off by a specialist workshop be-
fore the vehicle is transported by air.
Note
■ We recommend that mobile phones and two-way radio systems be installed in
the a vehicle by a specialist workshop.■
Not all mobile phones that enable Bluetooth ®
communication are compatible
with the universal telephone preinstallation GSM II. You can ask a ŠKODA Partner
whether your telephone is compatible with the GSM II universal telephone fitting.
■
The range of the Bluetooth ®
connection to the hands-free system is restricted
to the vehicle interior. The range is dependent on local factors, e.g. obstacles be-
tween the devices and mutual interferences with other devices. If your mobile
phone is in a jacket pocket, for example, this can lead to difficulties when estab-
lishing a connection with the hands-free-system or transferring data.
Introductory information
First read and observe the introductory information given on page 86.
The universal telephone preinstallation GSM II (hands-free system) includes a
convenience mode for the mobile phone via voice control, the multifunction
steering wheel, the adapter, radio or the navigation system.
86Using the system
CAUTION■If the selector lever is shifted to N while the vehicle is being driven you must lift
off the accelerator pedal and you will need to wait until the engine has reached
its idling speed before shifting the selector lever to a forward driving mode again.■
At temperatures below -10 °C, the engine can only be started in selector lever
position P.
■
Never try to hold the vehicle using the accelerator pedal when stopping on a hill
– this may lead to transmission damage.
Note
The ignition key can only be withdrawn once the ignition has been switched off if
the selector lever is in the P position 1)
.
Modes and use of selector lever
Fig. 89
Selector lever /MAXI DOT display: Selector lever positions
First read and observe the introductory information and safety warn-
ings
on page 100.
When the ignition is switched on, the gearbox mode and the gear currently selec-
ted are indicated in the display
1
» Fig. 89 .
The following modes can be selected with the selector lever » Fig. 89.
P
– Parking mode
The driven wheels are locked mechanically in this mode.
Parking mode must only be selected when the vehicle is stationary.R
- Reverse gear
Reverse gear can only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary and the engine
is at idling speed.
Depress the brake pedal and simultaneously press the shiftlock in the selector
lever grip before shifting to R from P or N.
N
- Neutral
Power transmission to the drive wheels is interrupted in this mode.
D
- Mode for forwards travel (normal programme)
In mode D, the forward gears are automatically changed according to the engine
load, accelerator pedal actuation and driving speed.
S
- Mode for forwards travel (sports programme)
In mode S, the forward gears are shifted automatically up and down at higher en-
gine speeds than in mode D.
The shiftlock on the selector lever grip must be pressed when moving the selec-
tor lever out of D mode into S mode.
Releasing selector lever from P or N modes (selector lever lock) The selector lever is locked in the P and N modes to prevent the forwards travel
mode from being selected accidentally and setting the vehicle in motion. The
warning light lights up in the instrument cluster » page 27.
The selector lever is released by depressing the brake pedal while simultaneously
pressing the locking button in the selection lever grip.
The selector lever is not locked when shifted quickly through N (e.g. from R to D).
This, for example, helps to rock out a vehicle that is stuck, e.g. in a bank of snow.
The selector lever lock will engage if the lever is in position N for more than ap-
proximately 2 seconds without the brake pedal being depressed.
The selector lever is locked only when the vehicle is stationary and at speeds up to 5 km/h.
Note
If you want to move the selector lever from mode P
to mode D or vice versa, move
the selector lever quickly. This prevents modes R or N from being selected acci-
dentally.1)
Only valid for some countries.

Manual gear shifting is deactivated if more than 1 minute passes after either of
the -
/+ paddles was pulled. The temporary switch to manual gear shifting can
also be deactivated by pulling the right-hand + paddle towards the steering
wheel for more than 1 second.
When accelerating, the gearbox automatically shifts up into the higher gear just
before the maximum permissible engine speed is reached.
If a lower gear is selected, the gearbox does not shift down until there is no riskof the engine overrevving.
Note
It may be advantageous to use manual gear shifting when driving downhill, for
example. Shifting to a lower gear reduces the load on the brakes and hence brake wear » page 98 , Information for braking .

The START-STOP system helps you to save fuel while at the same time reducing
harmful exhaust emissions and CO 2 emissions.
The function is automatically activated each time the ignition is switched on.
In the start-stop mode, the engine automatically switches to the vehicle's idle phase, e.g. when stopped at traffic lights. The engine restarts automatically
where necessary.
The system can work only if the following basic conditions are met. The driver's door is closed.
The driver has fastened the seat belt. The bonnet is closed. The driving speed exceeded 4 km/h after the last stop.
No trailer is coupled.
WARNING■ The brake servo unit and power steering only operate if the engine is run-
ning.■
Never let the vehicle roll with the engine switched off.
CAUTION
Always deactivate the START-STOP system before driving through wa-
ter » page 109 .Note■
If the driver's seat belt is removed for more than 30 seconds or the driver's door
is opened during stop mode, the engine will have to be started manually.■
After manually starting the engine, automatic engine shut down is not possible
until the vehicle has travelled the required minimum distance for START-STOP mode.
■
Changes to the outdoor temperature can have an effect on the internal temper-
ature of the vehicle battery even after several hours. If the vehicle remains out-
doors for a long time in minus temperatures or in direct sunlight, it can take sev-
eral hours until the internal temperature of the vehicle battery reaches a suitable
temperature for proper operation of the START STOP system.
■
If Climatronic is running in automatic mode, the engine may not switch off auto-
matically under certain conditions.

147Car care
Legally required inspectionsFirst read and observe the introductory information and safety warn-
ings
on page 147.
Many countries have legislation which requires that the reliability and roadworthi-
ness and/or exhaust gas composition of a vehicle must be tested at specific inter- vals. These tests can be carried out by workshops or inspection stations thathave been legally authorized for this purpose.
The ŠKODA Service Partners are familiar with the inspection required by the lawand will prepare the vehicle for the inspections as part of the service operation at
the customer's discretion, or will have the inspection carried out. The specialist
garages can carry out the inspections required directly if requested by the cus-
tomer, if they are accredited for such a procedure. This saves you time and mon-
ey.
Even if you want to take your vehicle to an officially approved inspection centre
for prior checking in preparation of a legally required inspection, we recommend
that you first consult the service adviser at your ŠKODA Service Partner.
The service adviser will tell you which areas you should attend to, in his view, so
that your vehicle will pass the technical inspection without any problems. In this
way, you can avoid additional expense of a possible re-inspection.
