X
Turn the SmartKey to position 1or 2in the
ignition lock.
X Set the windshield wipers to
position 0015.
X Whe nthe wiper arms have reached a
vertical position, turn the SmartKey to
position 0and remove it from the ignition
lock.
X Fold the windshield wiper arms away from
the windshield. X
Press both release clips 0004.
X Fold wiper blade 0003in the direction of
arrow 0024away from wiper arm 0023.
X Remove wiper blade 0003in the direction of
arrow 0021.
Installing the wiper blades X
Position new wiper blade 0003with
recess 0022on lug 0021.
X Fold wiper blade 0003in the direction of
arrow 0024onto the wiper arm, until retaining
clips 0004engage in bracket 0023.
X Make sure that wiper blade 0003is seated
correctly.
X Fold the wiper arm back onto the
windshield. Problems with the windshield wipers
The windshield wipers are obstructed X
For safety reasons, you should remove the
SmartKey from the ignition lock.

X Switch off the engine using the Start/Stop
button and open the driver's door.
X Remove the cause of the obstruction.
X Switch the windshield wipers back on.
The windshield wipers are inoperative The windshield wiper drive is malfunctioning.

Select another wiper speed on the
combination switch.
X Have the windshield wipers checked at a
qualified specialist workshop.
The spray nozzles are misaligned The windshield washer fluid from the spray

Below, you can find a number of notes and
recommendations to help you use the air-
conditioning system optimally.
R Switch on climate control using the 0006
button. The indicator lamp in the 0006
button lights up.
R Set the temperature to 72 ‡ (22 †).
R Recommendation for air distribution in
winter: set the001Cand0007 settings.
Recommendation for air distribution in
summer: set the001Dsetting.
R Only use the "defrosting" function briefly
until the windshield is clear again.
R Only use "air-recirculation" mode briefly,
e.g. if there are unpleasan toutside odors
or when in a tunnel. The windows could
otherwise fog up, since no fresh air is drawn
into the vehicle in air-recirculation mode. 122

WARNING
When the climate control system is switched
off, the outside air supply and circulation are
also switched off .Only choose this setting for
a short time when the retractable hardtop
(vario-roof) is closed .Otherwise, the windows
could fog up, impairing visibility and
endangering you and others.

air dehumidification
General notes G
WARNING
If you switch off the cooling function, the
vehicle will not be cooled when weather
conditions are warm. The windows can fog up
more quickly. This may preven tyou from
observing the traffic conditions, thereby
causing an accident.
The cooling with air dehumidification function
is only available when the engine is running.
The air inside the vehicle is cooled and
dehumidified according to the temperature
selected.
Condensation may drip from the underside of
the vehicle when it is in cooling mode. This is
normal and not a sign that there is a

Problems with the cooling with air
dehumidification function When you press the
0006or0004 button, the
indicator lamp in the button flashes three
times or remains off .You can no longer switch
on the cooling with air dehumidification
function.
X Visit a qualified specialist workshop. Setting climate control to automatic

WARNING
If you switch off the cooling function, the
vehicle will not be cooled when weather
conditions are warm. The windows can fog up
more quickly. Window fogging may impair
visibility and endanger you and others.
In automatic mode, the set temperature is
maintained automatically at a constant level.
The system automatically regulates the
temperature of the dispensed air, the airflow
and the air distribution.
Automatic mode will achieve optimal
operation if cooling with air dehumidification
is also activated. If desired, cooling with air
dehumidification can be deactivated. X
Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X Set the desired temperature.
X To activate: press the0005button.
The indicator lamp in the 0005button lights
up. Automatic air distribution and airflow
are activated.

0007 buttons.
The corresponding indicator lamp lights up
briefly.
The following air distribution settings can be
selected:
0007 Directs air through the defroster vents
001C Directs the airflow through the
footwell air vents
001D Directs air through the center and side
air vents
i You can also activate several air
distribution settings simultaneously .To do
this, press multiple air distribution buttons.
The air is then directed through various
vents.
3-zone automatic climate control X
Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X Press the 0019button repeatedly until the
desired symbol appears in the display.
The following air distribution settings can be
selected:
001D Directs air through the center and side
air vents
001C Directs the airflow through the
footwell air vents
001E Directs air through the center, side and
footwell vents
0007 Directs air through the defroster vents
0018 Directs the airflow through the
defroster, center and side air vents 20017
Directs air through the defroster and
footwell vents
0019 Directs the airflow through the
defroster, center and side air vents as
well as the footwell air vents
i Regardless of the air distribution setting,
airflow is always directed through the side
air vents. You can only close the side air
vents, by fully closing the adjuster on the

001A button. Switching the ZONE function on/off
This function is only available with 3-zone
automatic climate control.
X To switch on: press the0003button.
The indicator lamp in the 0003button lights
up. The temperature setting for the driver's
side is not adopted for the front-passenger
side.
X To switch off: press button0003.
The indicator lamp in the 0003button goes
out. The temperature setting for the
driver's side is adopted for the front-
passenger side.

Defrosting the windshield
You can use this function to defrost the
windshield or to defrost th einside of the
windshield and the side windows.
Switch off the "defrosting" functio nas soon
as the windshield is clear again.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X To activate: press the000Bbutton.
The indicator lamp in the 000Bbutton lights
up.
The climate control system switches to the
following functions:
R cooling with air dehumidification (if
desired)
R high airflow (depending on the outside
temperature)
R high temperature (depending on the
outside temperature)
R air distribution to the windshield and
front side windows
R air-recirculation mode off
X To deactivate: press the000Bbutton.
The indicator lamp in the 000Bbutton goes
out. The previously selected settings are
restored. Air-recirculation mode remains
deactivated.

X Press the 0005button.
The indicator lamp in the 000Bbutton goes
out. Airflow and air distribution are set to
automatic mode. MAX COOL maximumc
ooling
The MAX COOL function is only available in
vehicles for the USA.
MAX COOL is only operational when the
engine is running. X
To activate: press the0001button.
The indicator lamp in the button lights up.
X To activate: press off-road button 0001
again.
The indicator lamp goes out .The previously
selected settings are restored.
When you activate MAX COOL, climate
control switches to the following functions:
R maximum cooling
R maximum airflow
R air-recirculation mode on Defrosting the windows
Windows fogged up on the inside X
Activate the cooling with air
dehumidification function .
X Activate automatic mode 0005.
X If the windows continue to fog up, activate
the defrosting function (Y page 128).
i You should only select this setting until
the windshield is clear again.
Windows fogged up on the outside X
Activate the windshield wipers.
X Press the 0019button repeatedly until the
001D or001C symbol appears in the
display.
i You should only select this setting until
the windshield is clear again. Rear window defroster

WARNING
Clear all windows of ice or snow before setting
off. Otherwise, impaired visibility could
endanger you and others.
The rear window defroster has a high current
draw. You should therefore switch it off as
soon as the rear window is clear. Otherwise, 128

If the battery voltage is too low, the rear
window defroster may switc hoff.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.

Problems with the rear window
defroster If the indicator lamp in the
000Erear window
defroster button flashes, the on-board
voltage is too low or the roof is open. The rear
window defroster has deactivated
prematurely or cannot be activated.
X Switch off any consumers that are not
required, e.g. reading lamps or interior
lighting.
When the battery is sufficiently charged,
the rear window defroster is activated
again automatically.
or
X Close the roof.
The rear window defroster can be activated
again. Activating/deactivating air-
recirculation mode

WARNING
At low outside temperatures, only switch over
to air-recirculation mode for brie fperiods.
Otherwise, the windows could fog up, thus
impairing visibility and endangering yourself
and others. This may preven tyou from
observing the traffic conditions and thereby
cause an accident. X
Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X To activate: press the0014button.
The indicator lamp in the 0014button lights
up.
i Air-recirculation mode is automatically
activated at high levels of pollution or at
high outside temperatures. When air-
recirculation mode is activated
automatically, the indicator lamp in the
0014 button is not lit.
Outside air is added after about
30 minutes.
X To deactivate: press the0014button.
The indicator lamp in the 0014button goes
out.
i Air-recirculation mode deactivates
automatically:
R after approximately five minutes at
outside temperatures below
approximately 41 ‡ (5 †)
R after approximately five minutes if
cooling with air dehumidification is
deactivated
R after approximately 30 minutes at
outside temperatures above
approximately 41 ‡ (5 †) Activating/deactivating the residual
heat function
The residual heat function is only available on
vehicles for Canada.
It is possible to make use of the residual heat
of the engine to continue heating the
stationary vehicle for up to 30 minutes after
the engine has been switched off. The heating
time depends on the temperature that has
been set.
Depending on the equipment level, the
control panel has either the 0002button or
the 0004 button. Operating the climate control systems

i The blower will run at a low speed
regardless of the airflow setting.
i If you activate the residual heat function
at high temperatures, only the ventilation
will be activated. The blower runs at
medium speed.

button goes out.
Residual heat is deactivated automatically:
R after approximately 30 minutes
R when the ignition is switched on
R if the battery voltage drops

Important safety notes
G
WARNING
Very hot or very cold air can flow from the air
vents. This could cause burns or frostbite to
bare skin in the immediate vicinity of the
vents. Keep bare skin away from these air
vents. If necessary, direct the airflow away to
a different area of the vehicle interior.
In order to ensure the direct flow of fresh air
through the air vents into the vehicle interior,
please observe the following notes:
R keep the air inlet grille on the hood and in
the engine compartment on the front-
passenger side free of blockages, such as
ice, snow or leaves.
R never cover the air vents or air intake grilles
in the vehicle interior. i
You can move the adjusters for the air
vents vertically or horizontally to set the
direction of the airflow.
i For optimal climate control in the vehicle,
open the air vents completely and set the
adjusters to the central position. Setting the center air vents
