recommendations to help you use the air-
conditioning system optimally.

The following contains instructions and
recommendations to enable you to get the
most out of your automatic climate control.
R Activate climate control using the 0005and
0006 or0004 buttons. The indicator lamps
in the 0005and0006 or0004 buttons light
up.
R Set the temperature to 72 ‡ (22 †).
R Only use the "defrosting" function briefly
until the windshield is clear again. R
Only use "air-recirculation" mode briefly,
e.g. if there are unpleasant outside odors
or when in a tunnel. The windows could

off, the outside air supply and circulation are
also switched off .Only choose this setting for
a short time when the retractable hardtop
(vario-roof) is closed .Otherwise, the windows

WARNING
If you switch off the cooling function, the
vehicle will not be cooled when weather
conditions are warm. The windows can fog up
more quickly. This may preven tyou from
observing the traffic conditions, thereby
causing an accident.
The cooling with air dehumidification function
is only available when the engine is running.
The air inside the vehicle is cooled and
dehumidified according to the temperature
selected.
Condensation may drip from the underside of
the vehicle when it is in cooling mode. This is
normal and not a sign that there is a

Problems with the cooling with air
dehumidification function When you press the
0006or0004 button, the
indicator lamp in the button flashes three
times or remains off .You can no longer switch
on the cooling with air dehumidification
function.

WARNING
If you switch off the cooling function, the
vehicle will not be cooled when weather
conditions are warm. The windows can fog up
more quickly. Window fogging may impair
visibility and endanger you and others.
In automatic mode, the set temperature is
maintained automatically at a constant level.
The system automatically regulates the
temperature of the dispensed air, the airflow
and the air distribution.
Automatic mode will achieve optimal
operation if cooling with air dehumidification
is also activated. If desired, cooling with air
dehumidification can be deactivated. X
Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X Set the desired temperature.
X To activate: press the0005button.
The indicator lamp in the 0005button lights
up. Automatic air distribution and airflow
are activated.

Defrosting the windshield
You can use this function to defrost the
windshield or to defrost th einside of the
windshield and the side windows.
Switch off the "defrosting" functio nas soon
as the windshield is clear again.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X To activate: press the000Bbutton.
The indicator lamp in the 000Bbutton lights
up.
The climate control system switches to the
following functions:
R cooling with air dehumidification (if
desired)
R high airflow (depending on the outside
temperature)
R high temperature (depending on the
outside temperature)
R air distribution to the windshield and
front side windows
R air-recirculation mode off
X To deactivate: press the000Bbutton.
The indicator lamp in the 000Bbutton goes
out. The previously selected settings are
restored. Air-recirculation mode remains
deactivated.

out. Airflow and air distribution are set to
automatic mode. MAX COOL maximumc

The MAX COOL function is only available in
vehicles for the USA.
MAX COOL is only operational when the
engine is running. X
To activate: press the0001button.
The indicator lamp in the button lights up.
X To activate: press off-road button 0001
again.
The indicator lamp goes out .The previously
selected settings are restored.
When you activate MAX COOL, climate
control switches to the following functions:
R maximum cooling
R maximum airflow
R air-recirculation mode on Defrosting the windows
Windows fogged up on the inside X
Activate the cooling with air
dehumidification function .
X Activate automatic mode 0005.
X If the windows continue to fog up, activate
the defrosting function (Y page 128).
i You should only select this setting until

Windows fogged up on the outside X
Activate the windshield wipers.
X Press the 0019button repeatedly until the
001D or001C symbol appears in the
display.
i You should only select this setting until

WARNING
Clear all windows of ice or snow before setting
off. Otherwise, impaired visibility could
endanger you and others.
The rear window defroster has a high current
draw. You should therefore switch it off as

If the battery voltage is too low, the rear

Problems with the rear window
defroster If the indicator lamp in the
000Erear window
defroster button flashes, the on-board
voltage is too low or the roof is open. The rear
window defroster has deactivated
prematurely or cannot be activated.
X Switch off any consumers that are not
required, e.g. reading lamps or interior
lighting.
When the battery is sufficiently charged,
the rear window defroster is activated
again automatically.

X Close the roof.
The rear window defroster can be activated

recirculation mode

At low outside temperatures, only switch over
to air-recirculation mode for brie fperiods.
Otherwise, the windows could fog up, thus

The indicator lamp in the 0014button lights
up.
i Air-recirculation mode is automatically
activated at high levels of pollution or at
high outside temperatures. When air-
recirculation mode is activated
automatically, the indicator lamp in the
0014 button is not lit.
Outside air is added after about
30 minutes.
X To deactivate: press the0014button.
The indicator lamp in the 0014button goes
out.
i Air-recirculation mode deactivates
automatically:
R after approximately five minutes at
outside temperatures below
approximately 41 ‡ (5 †)
R after approximately five minutes if
cooling with air dehumidification is
deactivated
R after approximately 30 minutes at
outside temperatures above
approximately 41 ‡ (5 †) Activating/deactivating the residual
heat function
The residual heat function is only available on
vehicles for Canada.
It is possible to make use of the residual heat
of the engine to continue heating the
stationary vehicle for up to 30 minutes after
the engine has been switched off. The heating
time depends on the temperature that has
been set.
Depending on the equipment level, the
control panel has either the 0002button or
the 0004 button. Operating the climate control systems

Indicator and warning display

WARNING
Blind Spo tAssist is not active at speeds below
approximately 20 mph (30 km/h). The
indicator lamps in the exterior mirrors are
yellow. Vehicles in the monitoring range are
then not indicated.
Always pay attention to traffic conditions and
your surroundings. Otherwise, you may fail to
recognize dangers in time, cause an accident
and injure yourselfa nd others. 0003
Yellow indicator lamp/red warning lamp
Whe nBlind Spot Assist is activated, indicator
lamp 0003lights up yellow in the exterior
mirrors up to a vehicle speed of 20 mph
(30 km/h). From a speed of 20 mph
(30 km/h) the indicator lamp goes out and
Blind Spot Assist is operational.
If a vehicle is detected in the monitoring range
of Blind Spot Assist fro maspeed of approx.
20 mph (30 km/h), warning lamp 0003lights up
red on the corresponding side. This warning
is always emitted when a vehicle enters the
blind spot monitoring range from behind or
from the side. If you overtake a vehicle, a
warning will only be given if the difference in
speed is less than 7mph (12 km/h).
The yellow indicator lamp goes out if reverse
gear is engaged. In this event, Blind Spot
Assist is no longer active.
The brightness of the indicator/warning
lamps is adjusted automatically according to
the ambient light. Collision warning
If a vehicle is detected in the monitoring range
of Blind Spot Assist and you switch on the
corresponding turn signal, a double warning
tone sounds. Red warning lamp
0003flashes. If
the turn signal remains on, vehicles detected
are indicated by the flashing of red warning
lamp 0003.There are no further warning tones.
Switching on Blind Spot Assist
X Make sure that the radar sensor system
(Y page 206) and Blind Spot Assist
(Y page 202) are activated in the on-board
computer.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
Warning lamps 0003in the exterior mirrors
light up red for approx. 1.5 seconds and
then yellow.
Lane Keeping Assist Important safety notes

WARNING
Lane Keeping Assist does not keep your
vehicle in its lane. It is only an aid and may
detect the lane markings on the road
incorrectly or not at all.
The system may be impaired or may not
function if:
R there is poor visibility, e.g. due to
insufficient illumination of the road, or due
to snow, rain, fog or spray.
R there is glare, e.g. from oncoming traffic,
the sun, or reflection from other vehicles.
R the windshield is dirty, fogged up or
covered, for instance by a sticker, in the
vicinity of the camera.
R several or no lane markings for a single lane
are present.
R the lane markings are worn away, dark or
covered up, e.g. by dirt or snow.
R the distance to the vehicle in front is too
small and the lane markings thus cannot be

lighting and exterior lighting delayed
switch-off

Locator Lighting: function.
You will see the selected setting: Enabledor
Disabled .
X Press the 000Bbutton to save the setting.
Deactivating delayed switch-off of the
exterior lighting temporarily:
X Before leaving the vehicle, turn the
SmartKey to position 0in the ignition lock.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
The exterior lighting delayed switch-off is
deactivated. Delayed switch-off of the exterior lighting is
reactivated the next time you start the
engine.
If you have activated the
Locator Lighting: function and the light switch is set
to 0005, the following functions are activated
when it is dark:
R surround lighting: the exterior lighting
remains lit for 40 seconds after unlocking
with the key. If you start the engine, the
surround lighting is switched off and
automatic headlamp mode is activated
(Y page 107).
R exterior lighting delayed switch-off: the
exterior lighting remains lit for
60 seconds after the engine is switched off.
If you close all the doors and the trunkl id,
the exterior lighting goes off after
15 seconds.
i Depending on your vehicle's equipment,
when the surround lighting and delayed
switch-off exterior lighting are on, the
following light up:
R Parking lamps
R Front fog lamps
R Low-beam headlamps
R Daytime running lamps
R Side marker lamps
R Surround lighting in the exterior mirrors
Activating/deactivating the interior
lighting delayed switch-off
If you activate the Interior Lighting Delay: function, the interior lighting remains
on for 20seconds after you remove the key
from the ignition lock.
