Display messages
General notes
Display messages appear in the multifunction display.
Display messages with graphic symbols are simplified in the Owner's Manual and may differ
from the symbols in the multifunction display.
Please respond in accordance with the display messages and follow the additional notes in
this Owner's Manual.
Certain display messages are accompanied by an audible warning tone or a continuous tone.
When the ignition is switched off, all display messages are deleted apart from some high-
priority display messages. Once the causes of the high-priority display messages have been
rectified, the corresponding display messages are also deleted.
When you stop and park the vehicle, please observe the notes on the HOLD function
( Y page 181) and parking ( Y page 162).
Hiding display messages
XPress the a or % button on the steering wheel to hide the display message.
The display message is cleared.
The multifunction display shows high-priority display messages in red. Some high-priority dis-
play messages cannot be hidden.
The multifunction display shows these messages continuously until the causes for the mes-
sages have been remedied.
Message memory
The on-board computer saves certain display messages in the message memory. You can
call up the display messages:
XPress = or ; on the steering wheel to select the Service menu.
If there are display messages, the multifunction display shows, for example, 2 messages.XPress the 9 or : button to select the entry, e.g. 2 messages.XPress a to confirm.XPress the 9 or : button to scroll through the display messages.226Display messagesOn-board computer and displays

ATTENTION ASSIST is deactivated.
Possible causes:
R self-diagnosis is not yet complete.
R the on-board voltage may be insufficient.GWARNING
The brake system continues to function normally, but without the
functions listed above. The wheels could therefore lock if you
brake hard, for example.
The steerability and braking characteristics may be severely affec-
ted. The braking distance may increase in an emergency braking
situation.
If ESP ®
is not operational, ESP ®
is unable to stabilise the vehicle.
There is an increased danger of skidding and risk of an accident.
XCarefully drive on a suitable stretch of road, making slight steer-
ing movements, at a speed above 20 km/h.
If the display message disappears, the functions mentioned
above are available again.
If the display message continues to be displayed:
XDrive on carefully.XVisit a qualified specialist workshop.!÷

A condition for automatic release of the electric parking brake is
not fulfilled ( Y page 163).

You are making an emergency stop using the electric parking
brake ( Y page 163).!

The electric parking brake is malfunctioning.

are lit.
The electric parking brake is malfunctioning.

The electric parking brake is malfunctioning.
To release:XSwitch off the ignition and turn it back on.XRelease the electric parking brake manually.

If the red ! indicator lamp continues to flash:
XDo not drive on.XSecure the vehicle against rolling away ( Y page 326).XMove the transmission selector lever to P.XTurn the front wheels towards the kerb.XConsult a qualified specialist workshop.The yellow ! warning lamp lights up. The red ! indicator
lamp flashes for about ten seconds after the electric parking brake
has been applied or released. It then goes out or remains lit.

Parking brake inop‐
erativeThe yellow ! warning lamp lights up. The red ! indicator
lamp flashes for about ten seconds after the electric parking brake
has been applied or released. It then goes out or remains lit.
The electric parking brake is malfunctioning, e.g. because of over-
voltage or undervoltage.XRectify the cause of the overvoltage or undervoltage, e.g. by
charging the battery or restarting the engine.XApply or release the electric parking brake.
If it remains impossible to apply or release the electric parking
brake:
XSwitch off the ignition and turn it back on.XApply or release the electric parking brake.
If the electric parking brake still cannot be released:
XConsult a qualified specialist workshop.The display message is only shown while the vehicle is in motion.
The red ! indicator lamp flashes and the yellow ! warning
lamp is lit.
It is not possible to apply the electric parking brake manually.XMove the transmission selector lever to P.XVisit a qualified specialist workshop.!

You attempted to release the electric parking brake while the igni-
tion was switched off.XTurn the key to position 1 in the ignition lock.J
Brake immediatelyVehicles with manual transmission: a malfunction has occurred
while the HOLD function was activated.
A tone may also sound at regular intervals. If you attempt to lock
the vehicle, the tone becomes louder.
You cannot start the engine.XPaying attention to the traffic situation, immediately depress the
brake pedal firmly and hold until the display message disap-
pears.XSecure the vehicle against rolling away ( Y page 162).

Check brake fluid
levelThere is insufficient brake fluid in the brake fluid reservoir.
In addition, the red J warning lamp lights up in the instrument
cluster and a warning tone sounds.GWARNING
The braking efficiency may be impaired.
There is a risk of an accident.
XPull over and stop the vehicle safely as soon as possible, paying
attention to road and traffic conditions. Do not continue driving
under any circumstances.XSecure the vehicle against rolling away ( Y page 162).XConsult a qualified specialist workshop.XDo not top up the brake fluid. This does not correct the fault.#

Possible causes:
R the radar sensor cover in the radiator trim is dirty.
R the function is impaired due to heavy rain or snow.
R the radar sensor system is temporarily inoperative, e.g. due to
electromagnetic radiation emitted by nearby TV or radio sta-
tions or other sources of electromagnetic radiation.
R the system is outside the operating temperature range.
R the on-board voltage is too low.
Once the causes listed above no longer apply, the display message
goes out.
COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS is operational again.
If the display message does not disappear:XPull over and stop the vehicle safely as soon as possible, paying
attention to road and traffic conditions.XSecure the vehicle against rolling away ( Y page 162).XClean the radar sensor cover in the radiator grille
