It is important to yours
afety and that of your
passenger to have deployed air bags replaced
and to have any malfunctioning air bags
repaired. This will help to make sure the air
bags will continue to provide supplemental
crash protection for occupants .
Front air bags The fron
tair bags increase protection for the
driver's and front-passenger's head and
chest. Driver's air bag
0002deploys in front of the
steering wheel; front-passenger front air
bag 0003deploys in front of and above the glove
box.
They are deployed:
R in the event of certain frontal impacts
R if the system determines that air bag
deploymen tcan offer additional protection
to that provided by the seat belt
R if the seat belt is fastened
R independently of other air bags in the
vehicle
Your vehicle has adaptive, two-stage fron tair
bags. In the even tofacollision, the ai rbag
control unit evaluates the vehicle
deceleration. In the first deploymen tstage,
the front ai rbag is filled with enough
propellan tgas to reduce th erisk of injuries.
The front air bag is fully deployed if a second
deploymen tthreshold is exceeded within a
few milliseconds.
The deployment of the front-passenger front
air bag is also influenced by the weight category of the front passenger, which is
determined by the Occupant Classification
System (OCS) (Y
page 47).
The lighter the passenger-side occupant, the
higher the vehicle deceleration rate required
(predicted at the start of the impact) for
second stage inflation of the front-passenger
front air bag. In the second stage, the front
air bags are inflated with the maximum
amount of propellant gas available.
The front air bags are not deployed in
situations where a low impact severity is
predicted. You will then be protected by the
fastened seat belt.
The front-passenger front air bag will only be
deployed if:
R the system, based on the OCS weight
sensor readings, detects that the front-
passenger seat is occupied
R the 0019001B indicator lamp on the center
console is not lit (Y page 47)
R the air bag control unit predicts a high-
impact severity.
Driver's knee bag Driver's knee bag
0002increases the driver's
protection against:
R knee injuries
R thigh injuries
R lower leg injuries
Driver's knee bag 0002deploys under the
steering column. If, during a frontal collision,
the system determines that air bag
deployment can offer additional protection to 44

Turn the SmartKey to position 0in the
ignition lock (Y page 141) or remove it.
X To activate: press the0002button.
The indicator lamp in the 0002button lights
up.
i If the residual heat function is activated,
the windows may fog up on the inside.
X To deactivate: press the0002button.
The indicator lamp in the 0002button goes
out.
i Residual heat is deactivated
automatically:
R after approximately 30 minutes
R when the ignition is switched on
R if the battery voltage drops

Important safety notes

WARNING
Very hot or very cold air can flow from the air
vents. This could result in burns or frostbite in
the immediate vicinity of the air vents. There
is a risk of injury.
Make sure that all vehicle occupants always
maintain a sufficient distance to the air
outlets. If necessary, redirect the airflow to
another area of the vehicle interior.
In order to ensure the direct flow of fresh air
through the air vents into the vehicle interior,
please observe the following notes:
R keep the air inlet between the windshield
and the hood free of blockages, such as ice,
snow or leaves.
R never cover the air vents or air intake grilles
in the vehicle interior.
i For virtually draft-free ventilation, adjust
the sliders of the air vents to the center

When automatic climate control is activated,
the glove box can be ventilated, for instance

Always store objects so tha tthey cannot be
flung around in these or in similar
situations.
R Always make sure that objects do not
protrude from stowage compartments,
parcel nets or stowage nets.
R Close lockable stowage compartments
while driving.
R Stow and secure objects that are heavy,
hard, pointy, sharp-edged, fragile or too
large in the trunk.

Stowage compartments in the front Glove box

To open: pull handle 0002and open glove box
flap 0003.
X To close: fold glove box flap 0003upwards
until it engages.
The glove box can only be locked and
unlocked using the mechanical key. X
To lock: insert the mechanical key into the
lock and turn it 90° clockwise to position
0006.
X To unlock: insert the mechanical key into
the lock and turn it 90° counter-clockwise
to position 0005.
i The glove box can be cooled

Eyeglasses compartment
There is a compartmentt o stow eyeglasses
in the headliner on the driver's side. X
To open: pull down eyeglasses
compartment 0002by the handle.
Stowage compartment under the armrest X
To open: press left-hand button 0003or right-
hand button 0002.
The stowage compartment opens.
i Depending on the vehicle's equipment, a
