sure that any passengers are not at
risk from the moving glass either by
personal objects getting caught in the
mechanism or by being injured by it
directly. Always remove the ignition
key when getting out of the vehicle to
prevent the power windows being op-
erated accidentally and constituting
a danger to the passengers in the ve-
hicle.

forthcoming standard
2000/4/EC concerning the safety of
passengers leaning out of the pas-
senger compartment.

FUNCTIONING
Manual operation
Press the button or pull it, without going
beyond the resistance point. The window
stops as soon as the command is released.
Automatic Operation
Press the button or pull it, beyond the re-
sistance point. The window opens or clos-
es completely after having released the
command: a new impulse stops the win-
dow movement.
The electrical functions of the window
winder are deactivated:
– Approx. 45 seconds after the key is tak-
en out of the switch.
– After the opening of one of the rear
doors, with the key taken out.ANTI-CRUSHING SAFETY
SYSTEM
If the vehicle is equipped with this system,
when the window rises and it meets with
an obstacle, it stops and it slightly lowers.
In case of a sudden opening of the window
upon closure, press the button until it is
completely open. Within 4 seconds, pull
the button until the window is complete-
ly closed.
During these operations, the safety sys-
tem is not active.Re-initialise of the anti-crushing
system
After a disconnection of the battery, it is
necessary to re-initialise the safety func-
tion.
Let the window lower completely and
then let it rise. It will progressively rise, a
few centimetres upon each pressure of
the button. Repeat the operation until the
window is completely open.
Keep the command pressed for at least a
second after the complete closure of the
window.
During these operations, the safety sys-
tem is not active.

FRONT AIRBAGS
The front driver and passenger airbags (for versions/markets where provided)protect the front seat occupants in theevent of head-on impacts of medium-highseverity, by placing the bag between theoccupant and the steering wheel or dash-board. Therefore non-deployment inother types of impacts (side impacts, rearshunts, roll-overs, etc.) does not indicatea system malfunction.
Front driver and passenger airbags (for ver-sions/markets where provided) are not areplacement for, but are complementaryto, the seat belts, which you are recom-mended to always wear, as specified by lawin Europe and most non-European coun-tries.
An electronic control unit will inflate the bag, when necessary, in the event of afrontal impact. The bag will inflate instan-taneously placing itself between the frontoccupant’s body and the structures whichcould cause injury. It will deflate immedi-ately afterwards. The volume of frontairbags at max. inflation fills most of thespace between the steering wheel and thedriver and between the dashboard and thepassenger.
AIRBAG
The car is equipped with front airbags fordriver and passenger (for versions/markets,where provided), seat-mounted side airbagsfor driver’s and passenger pelvis-chest-shoulder protection (for versions/ markets,where provided), and window airbags forprotecting the heads of front and rear out-er occupants (for versions/markets whereprovided).
The location of the airbags on the car is marked by the writing “AIRBAG” in themiddle of the steering wheel, on the dash-board, on the side trim or on a label placednext to the airbag deployment area.
In the event of impact, those not wearing a seat belt are projected forwards and maycome into contact with the bag which is stillinflating. The protection offered by the bagis compromised in these circumstances.
Front airbags may not activate in the fol- lowing situations:
❒frontal impacts against highly deformableobjects not involving the front surface ofthe vehicle (e.g. wing collision againstguard rail, heaps of gravel, etc.);
❒underride impacts with other vehicles
Failure to activate in the conditions de- scribed above is due to the fact that theymay not provide any additional protection
compared with seat belts, so their activa-tion would be inappropriate. In these cas-es, non-deployment of the airbag does notnecessarily indicate a system malfunction.

Use the ignition key to turn the pawl of the deactivation device to OFFto deacti- vate the airbag or to ONto activate it. Warning light “on the instrument pan-el stays on constantly until the front pas-senger airbags and side bag for chest pro-tection (side bag) (for versions/marketswhere provided) are reactivated.
SIDE BAGS
The car is equipped with front side airbagsfor driver and passenger (for ver-sions/markets, where provided) pelvis,chest and shoulder protection (front sidebags), airbags for protecting the heads offront and rear occupants (window bags)(for versions/markets where provided).The front side airbags (for versions/mar-kets, where provided) protect the occu-pants during impacts of medium-highseverity, by placing the bag between theoccupant and the internal parts of the sidestructure of the vehicle. Therefore non-deployment of the side bags in other typesof impacts (front, rear, roll-overs, etc.)does not indicate a system malfunction.
Side airbags (for versions/markets where provided) are not a replacement for, butare complementary to, the seat belts,which you are recommended to alwayswear, as specified by law in Europe andmost non-European countries.
An electronic control unit will inflate the bags, when necessary, in the event of aside impact. The bags will inflate instanta-neously placing themselves between theoccupant bodies and the structures whichcould cause injuries;

IMPORTANT Do not affix rigid objects to
the garment hooks or support handles.
IMPORTANT Do not rest your head,
arms or elbows on the door, windows or
the area in which the head protection side
bag (window bag) deploys to avoid possi-
ble injury during airbag inflation.
IMPORTANT Never lean your head, arms
or elbows out of the window.
WINDOW BAG fig. 16
(for versions/markets, where provided)
These comprise two “curtain” bags, one
on the right side and one on the left side
of the vehicle, housed behind the roof side
linings and covered by special trims. They
are designed to protect the head of front
and rear occupants in the event of a side
impact, thanks to the wide cushion infla-
tion surface.
In the event of a side impact, the system
provides best protection if the passenger
sits on the seat in a correct position, thus
allowing correct deployment of the side
bags.

(for versions/markets, where provided)
They are located in the backrests of the
door side front seats, and include an in-
stantly inflating bag which protect the
pelvis, chest and shoulder area of the oc-
cupants in the event of a side impact of
medium-high severity.

CORRECT USE
OF THE VEHICLE
Roof rack/ski rack
Remove the roof rack or the ski rack from
the roof as soon as they are no longer
used. These accessories lower air pene-
tration and adversely affect consumption
levels. When needing to carry particular-
ly voluminous objects, preferably use a
trailer.
Electric devices
Use electric devices only for the amount
of time needed. Rear heated window, ad-
ditional headlights, windscreen wipers and
heater fan need a considerable amount of
energy, therefore increasing the require-
ment of current increases fuel consump-
tion (up to +25% in the urban cycle).
Climate control
The air conditioner is an additional load
which greatly affects the engine leading to
higher consumption (on average up to
+20%). When the temperature outside
the vehicle permits it, use the air vents
where possible.
Spoilers
The use of non-certified aerodynamic
items may adversely affect air drag and
consumption levels.DRIVING STYLE
Starting
Do not warm the engine when the vehi-
cle is stationary or at high or low speed:
in this way the engine will warm up grad-
ually increasing consumption and emis-
sions. You should drive off slowly straight
away avoiding high revs so that the engine
will warm up more quickly.
Unnecessary actions
Avoid accelerating when waiting at traffic
lights or before switching off the engine.
This and also double declutching is ab-
solutely pointless on modern vehicles and
also increase consumption and pollution.
Gear selections
As soon as the conditions of the traffic and
road allow, use a higher gear. Using a low
gear to obtain brilliant performance in-
creases consumption.
In the same way improper use of a high
gear increases consumption, emissions an
engine wear.CONTAINING
RUNNING COSTS
Some suggestions which may help you to
keep the running costs of the vehicle
down and lower the amount of toxic emis-
sions released into the atmosphere are
given below.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
Vehicle maintenance
Carry out the checks and adjustments/reg-
ulations specified in the “Service Sched-
ule”.
Tyres
Check tyre inflation pressure regularly.
Tyres should be checked at least once
every four weeks: if the pressure is too
low, fuel consumption increases as the re-
sistance to the rolling movement of the
tyre is greater.
Unnecessary loads
Do not travel with too much load.
The weight of the vehicle (specially in ur-
ban traffic) and its trim greatly effects con-
sumption and stability.

VEHICLE INACTIVITY
If the vehicle is to be left inactive for longer
than a month, the following precautions
should be noted:
❒park the vehicle in covered, dry and if
possible well-ventilated premises;
❒engage a gear;
❒check that the handbrake is not en-
gaged;
❒disconnect the battery negative termi-
nal and check the battery charge. This
check is to be repeated every three
months. Recharge if the optical indica-
tor shows a dark colour without the
central green area;
❒clean and protect the painted parts us-
ing protective wax;
❒clean and protect the shiny metal parts
using special compounds readily avail-
able;
❒ sprinkle talcum powder on the rubber
windscreen and rear window wiper
blades and lift them off the glass;
❒slightly open the windows;
❒cover the vehicle with a cloth or per-
forated plastic sheet. Do not use sheets
of non-perforated plastic as they do not
allow moisture on the vehicle body to
evaporate;
❒inflate tyres to +0,5 bar above the nor-
mal specified pressure and check it at
intervals;
❒if you don’t disconnect the battery from
the electric system, check its charge
every month and recharge it if the op-
tical indicator shows a dark colour
without the central green area;
❒do not drain the engine cooling system.
IMPORTANT Where relevant, switch off
the vehicle alarm with the remote control.
Keep your speed down when
snow chains are fitted. Do
not exceed 50 km/h. Avoid
potholes, steps and pave-
ments and avoid also to dri-
ve for long distances on
roads not covered with snow to pre-
vent damaging the vehicle and the
roadbed.
