Rear seats
General information
Safe transportation of passengers on the rear
seats requires proper safety precautions .

A ll passengers on the rear seats must be sea t­
ed in compliance w ith the sa fety guidelines
explained in
c::> page 100 and c::> page 108.
The correct seating position is critical for the
safety of front
and rear seat passengers alike

A WARNING
,--
- Occupants in the front and rear seats
must always be properly restrained.
- Persons taller than 4 feet 11 inches
(1. 50 m) must never sit in the rear seat
area . The rear passenger compartment is
too small for passenger taller than 4 feet 11 inches
(1. 50 m).
- The minimum clearance between the
passenge rs' heads and the rear window
must never, under any circumstances, be
less than 1 inc h (2.5 cm) with the pas­
sengers sit ting fully upright. Ta ller per­
sons, as well as children on booster seats
who are too close to the rear window, can suffer severe head and neck injuries
when the rear lid is closed or if a crash
occurs. Always make sure that rear seat
passengers ca nnot be struck when the
rear lid is closed .
- When the rear backrest is folded down
do not allow passengers to occupy the
load surface available while the vehicle is
in motion. Vehicle occupa nts must al­
ways be properly restrained. -
Never store any heavy, hard objects on
the rear lid cover. This can be hazardous
for rear seat occupants if the rear lid is
opened or if the vehicle is braked sud­
denly or in the event of a crash .
- Loose items inside the passenger com­
partment, can fly forward in a crash or
sudden maneuver and injure occupants .
Always sto re a rticles in the luggage com­
pa rtment and use the faste ning eyes, es­
pecia lly when the rea r seatbacks have
been fo lded down.
- Read and heed all WARN INGS

Rear window shelf '
You can place light articles of clothing on the
rear window shelf behind the seatback .
A WARNING ~ -
Whenever you are driving, do not leave any
hard objects on the rear window shelf or
a llow your pet to sit on the she lf. These
could become a hazard for veh icle occu­
pants in the event of sudden brak ing or a
crash!
(i) Tips
- A vent slot is located between the shelf
and the rear w indow. Do not block the
vent with any items you may place on the
rear window she lf.
- Do not place bu lky items on the rear win­
dow shelf as they wou ld restr ict or block
the driver's vision t hrough the rear view
m irror .

Luggage compartment
Expanding the luggage compartment
You can increase the available luggage space
by folding the rear seatback down .

A WARNING
- The backrest must always be securely
latched so that the safety belt can work
properly to help protect the occupant.
- The backrest must be securely latched in
position so that no items contained in
the luggage compartment can slide for­
ward upon sudden braking .
- Never allow safety belts to become dam­
aged by being caught in door or seat
hardware.
- T orn or frayed safety belts can tear and
damaged belt hardware can break in a
crash. Inspect the belts periodically.

When folding the backrest back into place,
make sure the safety belt does not get
caught, because it can be damaged. A
damaged belt can fail to provide safe re­
straint .
Fastening eyelets
The luggage compartmen t is equipped wi th
four tie-down eyelets to secure luggage and
other items .

Stowing luggage.
In a collision, the laws of physics mean that
even smaller items that are loose in the vehi­
cle will turn into heavy missiles that can cause
serious injury. Items in the vehicle pick up ki­
netic energy which va ries with vehicle and the
weight of the item. The vehicle speed is the
most sign ificant factor .
For example, in a frontal collision at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a 10 lbs (5 kg) object are about
20 times the
normal weight of the item . This means that
the weight of the item would suddenly be

about 200 lbs (90 kg). One can easi ly imagine
the injuries that an item of that weight flying
freely through the passenger compartment can cause in a co llision at a speed considered
relative ly low .
A WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps used
to secure items to t ie-downs can fail du r­
ing hard b rak ing or in a col lision and cause
ser ious personal inju ry.
- Always use suitable mounting straps and
properly secure i tems to the tie-downs in
the luggage compar tment to help pre­
vent items from shifting or flying for­
wa rd as dangerous missiles .
- When the rear seat back rest is folded
down, always use su itab le mount ing
st raps and proper ly secure items to the
t ie-downs in the luggage compartment
to help prevent items from flying for­
ward as dangerous miss iles into the pas­
senger compartment.
- Never attach a child safety seat tether strap to a tie-down.

luggage compartment cover . If you leave

A lso, in the case of s udden br aking or a
crash, a heavy object on the cover could fly
fo rward and injure any passen gers.
Roof rack
First things first
A roof rack can be fitted to carry additional
luggage on the roof
• Always read and follow the instructions pro­
vided by the roof rack man ufacturer when
the roof rack sys tem must be installed.
If you are transporting luggage or other ob ­
jects on the roof, p lease note the fo llowing:
- Yo ur vehicle has spec ially designed aerody-
namic roof rails . On ly install a roof rack spe­
cifically designed for your model. Contact
the nearest Aud i dealer for information on
approved modul ar roo f racks for your vehi­
cle .
- T hese approved roof racks are the basis for a
comp lete roof rack system . Additional at ­
tachments for the basic roof rack are neces­ sary to safely tran spo rt luggage, bicycles,
surf boards, skis or small boats. All necessa­ ry hardwar e fo r these syst ems is available at
your authorized A udi dealer.
- We recommend that you keep the installa­
tion instruct ions for your roof rac k system
together w ith your Owner's literatu re i n t he
veh icle. .,.

A WARNING
The outlet p lus any appliances plugged in­
to it rema in functional even if the ignition
is switched off or the ignition key is re­
moved. N ever leave children inside the ve­
hicle withou t supe rv ision.

To avo id damag ing the socket, only use
plugs that fit properly .

When the engine is off and accessor ies are
still plugged in and are on, the vehicle bat­
tery ca n still be dra ined .
Storage
General
A WARNING
-Always remove objec ts from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not put away
cou ld slide around inside the vehicle
wh ile driving or when acce lerating or
when applying the brakes or when driv­
ing around a corner.
- When you are drivi ng make sure tha t
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage lo cations
cannot fa ll out into the footwells . In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake, depress th e clutch or acceler­
ate.
-Any articles of cloth ing that you have
hung up must not interfere with the driv­
er's v iew. The coat hooks are desig ned
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang
any clothing with ha rd, po inted or heavy
objects in the pocke ts on the coat hooks.
Dur ing sudden braking or in an acciden t -
especially if the airbag is deployed -
-
these objects co uld injure any passen­
gers inside the vehicle.
Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and
can be locked.

A WARNING
Drivers who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be seriously
injured by an airbag as it deploys. To help
reduce the risk of serious personal injury:
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
10 inches (25 cm) between your breast­
bone and the steering wheel.
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
4 inches (10 cm) between the knees and
the lower part of the instrument panel.
- Always hold the steering wheel on the
outside of the steering wheel rim with
your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions to help reduce the risk of per­
sonal injury if the driver's airbag inflates.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the
12 o'clock position or with your hands at
other positions inside the steering wheel
rim or on the steering wheel hub. Hold­
ing the steering wheel the wrong way
can cause serious injuries to the hands,
arms and head if the driver's airbag in­
flates
- Pointing the steering wheel toward your
face decreases the ability of the supple­
mental driver's airbag to protect you in a
collision.
- Always sit in an upright position and nev­
er lean against or place any part of your
body too close to the area where the air­
bags are located.
- Before driving, always adjust the front
seats and head restraints properly and
make sure that all passengers are prop­
erly restrained.
- Never adjust the seats while the vehicle
is moving. Your seat may move unexpect- edly and you could lose control of the ve­
hicle .
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests
are tilted back, the greater the risk of in­
jury due to incorrect positioning of the safety belt and improper seating posi ­
tion .
- Children must always ride in child seats

when installing a child seat on the front passenger seat¢
page 108.
Proper seating position for the front
passenger
The proper front passenger seating position
is important for safe, relaxed driving .
For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust the seat for the front
passenger to the following position :
• Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upright position and your back comes in full contact with it whenever the vehicle is
moving.
• Adjust the head restraint so that the upper
edge is as even with the top of your head as
possible but not lower than eye level and so
that it is as close to the back of your head as
possible

• Keep both feet flat on the floor in front of
the front passenger seat.
• Fasten and wear safety belts correctly
c::>page 104.

A WARNING
-
Front seat passengers who are unbelted,
out of position or too close to the airbag
can be seriously injured or killed by the air­
bag as it unfolds. To help reduce the risk of
serious personal injury:

-Passengers must always sit in an upright
position and never lean against or place
any part of their body too close to the
area where the airbags are located.
- Passengers who are unbelted, out of po­
sition or too close to the airbag can be
seriously injured by an airbag as it un ­
folds with great force in the blink of an
eye .
- Always make sure that there are at least
10 inches (25 cm) between the front
passenger's breastbone and the instru­
ment panel.
- Always make sure that there are at least
4 inches (10 cm) between the front pas­
senger 's knees and the lower part of the
instrument panel.
- Each passenger must always sit on a seat
of their own and properly fasten and
wear the safety belt belonging to that
seat.
- Before driving , always adjust the front
passenger seat and head restraint prop­
erly.
- Always keep your feet on the floor in
front of the seat. Never rest them on the
seat, instrument panel, out of the win­
dow, etc. The airbag system and safety
belt will not be able to protect you prop­
erly and can even increase the risk of in­
jury in a crash .
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests are tilted back , the greater the risk of in­
jury due to incorrect positioning of the
safety belt and improper seating posi­
tion.

in rear seats
Rear seat passengers must sit upright with
both feet on the floor consistent with their
physical size and be properly restrained
whenever the vehicle is in use.
To reduce the risk of injury caused by an incor­
rect seating position in the event of a sudden
braking maneuver or an accident, your pas­
sengers on the rear bench seat must always
observe the following:
.,. Make sure that the seatback is securely
latched in the upright position¢

.,. Keep both feet flat in the footwell in front
of the rear seat.
.,. Fasten and wear safety belts properly

.,. Make sure that children are always properly
restrained in a child restraint that is appro ­
priate for their size and age¢

A WARNING
Passengers who are improperly seated on
the rear seat can be seriously injured in a
crash.
- Each passenger must always sit on a seat
of their own and properly fasten and
wear the safety belt belonging to that
seat.
- Safety belts only offer maximum protec­
tion when the seatback is securely latch­
ed in the upright position and the safety
belts are properly positioned on the
body. By not sitting upright, a rear seat
passenger increases the risk of personal
injury from improperly positioned safety
belts!

force and w ill smash the ch ild safety seat
and child against the backrest, ce nter
arm rest, door o r roof.
- Always install rear-facing child safety
seats on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward facing child safety seat on the front passenger
seat because of exceptional circ umstan­
ces and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light does not come on and stay on, im­
med iately install the rea r-facing child
safety seat in a rear seating po sition and
have the airb ag sys tem inspec ted by you r
Audi dealer .
A WARNING
Objects between you and the a irbag will
increase the risk of in jury in a c rash by in­
terfering with the way the airbag unfolds
or by being pushed into yo u as the a irbag
inf lates. -
Never hold things in you r hands o r on
your lap when the veh icle is in use.
- Never transpo rt items on or in t he a rea
of the front passenger seat. Objects
could move into the area of the front air­
bags during braking or other sudden ma­
neuver and become dangerous p rojec­
tiles that can cause ser ious personal in­
jury if the a irbags inf late .
- Never p lace or attach accesso ries o r oth ­
er objects (such as cup hold ers, te le­
phone b ra ck ets, large, heavy or bulky ob­
jects) on the doors, ove r o r ne ar the are a
marked "AIRBAG" on the s teer ing whee l,
instr ument panel, sea t bac krests o r be ­
tween those areas and yourself. These
objects could ca use in jury in a crash, es­
pecially when the airbags inflate.
- Never recline the front passenger 's seat
to transport objects. Items can a lso
move into the area of the s ide airbag or
the front a irbag during braki ng or in a
sudden maneuve r. Objects near the air­
bags can become projectiles and cause
in jur y, partic ularly when the seat is re­
clined.
- Never tilt the front passenger seat back­
rest forwar d w hen the vehi cle is moving.
An in flating airbag w il l force the ba ck­
rest backwar d an d can injure rear seat o c­
cupants.
A WARNING
=
The fine dust create d when air bags deploy
can cause breathing prob lems fo r people
with a history of asthma or other breath­
i ng cond itions.
- To reduce the risk of breathing problems ,
those with asthma or other respiratory
conditions shou ld get fresh air right
away by getting o ut o f the veh icle or
open ing windows or doors.
- If you are in a collision in which airbags
deploy , wash your hands and face with
mild soap and wate r before eating .
- Be ca reful not to get the dust into your
eyes, o r into any c uts or sc ratches .

Improper use of tether anchorages or low­
er anchorages can cause serious personal
injury in a crash.
- Always carefully follow the ch ild re­
straint manufacturer 's instructions for
proper installation and use of child re­
st raint systems .
- Never use the
LATCH or tethe r anchorag­
es to attach safety belts or other kinds of
occupant restraints.
- Child restraint tether attachments and
lower attachments are only des igned to
se cu re a child res traint that has been
equipped to use these anchorages.
- T ether anchorages and lower anchorages
are designed to withstand only those loads imposed by correct ly fitted ch ild
restraints . Under no circumstances can
they be used safe ly for adu lt or chi ld
safety belts or harnesses.
- Never mount more than one chi ld re­
straint to a sing le tether or to a lower an­
chorage point. Attaching two chi ld re­
straints to a single anchorage point can cause the anchorage to fail and cause se­
rious personal injury in a crash.
(D Note
- Remove the guidance f ixtures before
fold ing the rear seatback to prevent
damaging the seat cushion.
- If you leave the guidance fixtures instal­
led for several days, they could leave a
mark on the upholstery on the seat cush­
ion and backrest in the area that the
guidance fixtures were insta lled. The up­
ho lstery would also be permanently
stretched around the guid ance fixtu res.
This applies especially to leather seats.
Installing a child restraint with LATCH
lower anchorages
Whenever you install a child restraint always
follow the child restraint manufacturer's in­
structions.

spring catch release on the child safety seat
onto the LATCH lower anchorage so that the
connectors lock into place

.,. Pull straps tight fo llow ing the child re­
straint manufacturer's instructions .
Releasing
.,. Loosen the tension on the straps following
t he child restra int manufac turer's inst ruc­
tions.
.. Depress the spring catches to release the
anchorage hooks from the lower anchorag­
es.
Remember: Use tether straps to help keep the
child restraint firmly in place.
