respond  with  maxim um  stopping  power 
in  critical  situations . You must  allow  for 
increased  brak ing  distances.  The extra 
distance  used  up  by fad ing  brakes  could 
lead  to  an  acc ident. 
PARK/( ®) Electromechanical  parking 
brake 
The warning/indicator  light  monitors  the 
electromechanical  parking  brake . 
If  the indicato r light  - (USA models)/ . 
(Canada  mode ls)  turns  on,  the  pa rking  brake 
was  set.  If  the  pa rking  brake  is  set  when  the 
igni tion  is off,  the  indicator  light  turns  off  a f
te r abo ut  20  seconds . 
The  wa rning/i nd icator  lig ht  wi ll go  out  when 
the  pa rking  bra ke  is  re leased.

Caution:  Vehicle  park ed too  steep 
If  the  indicator  light  b links  and  the  message 
appea rs,  there  is  not  enough  braki ng  power  to 
keep  the  vehicle  from  roll ing . The  brakes  have 
overheated . The  veh icle  cou ld  roll  away  eve n 
on  a  sma ll incline . 
Press brake  pedal  to  release  parking  brake 
To release  the  parking  b rake,  press  the  brake 
peda l and  press  the  button~ or  start  driving

The  ground  clearance  is very  low  due  to a  sys 
tem  malf unct io n.  Wait  until the air  suspen
sion  system  has restored  normal  gro und  clear
ance . Otherwise,  conditions  such  as  an  uneven 
road  surface  can  lead  to  vehicle  damage. 
~/  !f Safety  systems 
The fl (USA models) !fll (Canada  models)  in
dicator  light  monitors  the  safety  systems  (e .g. 
a ir bags,  pretensioners)  and  illuminates  for a 
few  seconds  each  time you  switch  the  ignition 
on .  If  the 
fl (USA models)
Jfll (Canada  models) 
indicator  light  does  not  go  out,  or  if it  illumi
nates  while  you  are  driving,  or  if it  starts  to 
blink,  then  there  is a  malfunction  somewhere 
in  the  system.  If  the  light  does  not  illuminate 
when  you  switch  the  ign ition  on,  th is  also 
mea ns  there  is a  malfunct io n. 
A WARNING 
If  you  have  a  ma lfunction  in the  safety  sys
tems,  contact  your  authorized  Audi  dealer  immediately.  Otherwise  the  safety sys
tems  may  not  work  properly in an  acc i
dent. 
f!;.J fj Electronic  Stabilization  Control 
(ESC) 
This warning/indicator  light  monitors  the 
Electronic Stabilization  Control . 
When you switch  the ignition  on,  the indicato r 
light 
G1 turns  on briefly  to  check  the  function. 
If  the 
G1 indicator  lamp  blinks  while  dr iv ing, 
the  ESC  or ASR (Anti-Slip  Reg ulation)  is active
ly  reg ulat ing. 
If the 
Ji1 indicator  lamp  illuminates,  the  sys
tem  has  switched  the ESC 
off. 
If  the  indicator  light II turns  on,  the  ESC was 
switched  to  ESC sport  mode  with  the  button 
[!]~page  196. If this  is  case , you  can  reacti
vate  the  ESC  by  switching  the  ignition 
off and 
then  on  again.  The  warning/ indicator  light 
sho uld go  out  to  show that  the  system  is fully 
functional  again. 
Stabilization  control  (ESC/ABS):  Fault!  See 
owner's  manual 
If the  indicato r light GI and  the  ABS  indicator 
li ght 
B (USA models) ,1iJ (Canada  mod
els)  tu rn on  and  the  message  appears,  there is 
a  malfunction  in the  ABS  system  or  electron ic 
differential  lock.  This also  inte rr upt s the  ESC. 
The  brakes  still  function  with  their norma l 
power,  but  ABS is  not  active . 
Drive  to  your authorized  Audi dealer  immedi-
ate ly  to  have  the  malfunction  corrected.  .,..

If  the  battery  te rm inals  were  disconnected 
and  re-connected,  the  vehicle was j ump  sta rt
ed  or the  batte ry is very weak, the  ESC sensor 
system  goes  through  a  learning  process  for 
the  first  few yards.  The warning/ind icator 
light  illuminates . The war ning/ indicato r light 
goes  out  as soon  as the  learning  proc ess  is 
comp lete .

ABS/( @) Anti-lock  braking  system  (ABS) 
This warning/indicator  light  monitors  the ABS 
and  the  electronic  differ ential  lock  (EDL). 
The warning/indicator  light E (USA mod

few seconds  when  the  ignition  is switched  on. 
The  light  will go out  after  an  a utomat ic chec k

memory  is also  displayed.  Electrical  energy 
can  be  stored  in the  battery  when  the  vehicle  is coasting  or  driving  downhill  (recuperation) . 
The  bar  w ill move  toward  Cl. 
Efficiency  program 
The  efficiency  program  can  help  you  to  use 
less  fuel.  It  evaluates  driving  information  in 
reference  to  fuel  consumption  and  shows  oth
er  equipment  influencing  consumption  as  well 
as  shift  recommendations.  ¢

Fuel  economy  messages

Fuel  economy  messages  are  displayed when 
fuel  consumption  is increased  by certain  con
ditions.  If you  follow  these  fuel  economy  mes
sages,  you  can  reduce  your  veh icle's  consump
tion  of fuel.  The  messages  appear  automat i
cally  and  are  only  displayed  in the  efficiency 
program.  The fuel  economy  messages  turn  off 
automat ically after  a  certain  per iod  of t ime . 
.,.  To turn  an  economy  message off  immed i-
ately  after  it  appears,  press  any  button  on 
the  mult ifunction  steering  wheel. 
@ Tips 
- Once  you  have turned  a fuel  economy 
message  off,  it will only  appear  again  af
ter  you  turn  the  ign ition  on again . 
- The  fuel  economy  messages are  not dis
played  in  every  instance,  but  rather in  in
tervals  over  a  period  of time.

amount  of  power  needed . This action  is not 
felt  by the  passengers .

- D riving  i n third  gea r o r higher. 
- E ngine  speed between  960  and  3,500  RPM . 
- A warm  engine. 
Odometer

T he odometer  shows you  how  m any m iles 
( kil omete rs) you  have  drive n. You can switch 
the  d isplay from  miles to  ki lometers  and v ice 
versa via t he  M MI. 
Upper  odometer 
The  trip  odomete r shows the  dis tance driven 
s ince it  was last  reset.  It  can be used to  meas 
u re short  dista nces . The  last digit  indicates 
1/10  of  a mile  (100  meters). 
You can re set  t he  trip  odometer  to  zero  by 
pressing  the Reset bu tton 
Efil . 
Lower odometer 
The lower  odomet er shows the  tota l numb er 
of  m iles (kilometers)  dr iven. 
Malfunction  message 
If  there  is a malfunc tio n i n the  instrument 
cluster, 
DEF will  appear  in the  trip  odometer 
display  area . Conta ct  your  author ized Audi 
dealer to  have th e problem  correct ed . 
Time  and  date  display

When  you open  the  dr iver's door, the  date  and 
time  appear  in the  instrument  cluster  display 
fo r 30  seconds.

This  indicates  that  the MIL is working  proper
ly. 
If  the  light  does  not  go  out after  the  engine 
i s started,  or  illuminates  whi le you are driv

tem . 
If the  light  illuminates,  the  catalytic  con
verter  could  be damaged. 
Continue  driving 
with  reduced  power (avoid
ing susta ined  high  speeds and/or  rapid accel
erat ions) and  have the  condition  corrected. 
Contact  your  authori zed  Audi  dealer . 
If  the  light  illuminates,  the  electronic  speed 
limiter  may also be ma lfunctioning.  For more

On-Board  Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics  monitors the  compo
nents  o f your  emission  control  system.  Each 
monitored  component  in your  engine  system 
has been assigned a code. In  case of  a mal
function,  the  component  will  be identified 
and the  fault  stored  as a code in the  control module  memory. 
The MIL  light  may a lso illuminate  if  there  is a 
leak  in the  on-board  fue l vapor  recovery sys
tem.  If  the  light  illuminates  after  a refuelling, 
stop  the  veh icle and make sure the  fuel  filler 
cap is properly  closed

stored  data  can on
ly be displayed  using  spe
c ial  diagnostic  equipment  (generic scan tool 
for  OBD). 
In  order  to  connect  the  special  diagnostic

Connector  (D LC). The DLC is  located to  the

service station  can interpret  the  code and  per
form  the  necessary repair. 
A WARNING 
-Do not  use the  diagnostic connector  for 
personal  use.  Incorrect  usage can cause 
malfunctions,  which  can increase the  risk 
of  a collision! 
Electronic  speed  limiter 
-
Your vehicle  may be factory  equipped  w ith 
t ir es that  are  rated for  a maximum  speed of 
130  mph  (210  km/h).  This is less than  the 
maximum  speed of  your  vehicle.  To reduce  the 
risk of  sudden  tire  fai lure and  loss of  control  if 
the  vehicle  is operated  at  excessive speeds, 
your  vehicle  also  has an e lectronic  speed  limit
er . The electronic  speed limiter  prevents your 
vehicle  from  going  faster  than  the  tire  speed

If  the  engine  control  unit  receives  faulty vehi
cle road speed signals,  the  Malfunction  Indi
cator  Lamp (MIL) 
¢fj will  illuminate . If  this 
occurs, contact  the  nearest  authorized  Audi 
dealer for  assistance. 
S  models 
Your vehicle's  top  speed is electronica lly  limit
ed to  155  mph  (250  km/h). 
If the  engine  control  unit  receives faulty vehi
cle  roadspeed signals,  the  Malfunction Indica
tor  Lamp  (MIU¢.§ will  illuminate . If  this  oc
curs, contact  the  nearest authorized Audi 
dealer  for  assistance.  

@ Tips 
The instrument  illumination  (for  dials and 
needles)  lights  on when  the  ign it ion is 
sw itched  on and the  vehicle  lig hts  are 
turned  off.  As the  daylight  fades,  the  ill u
m ination  of  the  dials  likewise  dims  auto 
mat ically  and w ill  go out  comp lete ly when 
the  o utside  lig ht  is ve ry low . This fea ture  is 
meant  to  remi nd you t o swit ch on the 
headl igh ts when  o utside  light  condi tions 
become  poor.

proximate ly 2  mph  (4  km/h)  and  it  is ra ining . 
T he hig her the  rain senso r sens it ivity  is set 
(sw itch  @to th e r ight) , the  earlier  the  wind
shield  wipers  react  to mois ture on the  w ind
shield.  Yo u can deactivate  rain sensor mode  in 
the  MMI,  which  will  then  activate  interm ittent
