qua lified workshop to have all brake pads in­
spected

When the light comes on, an audib le warning
signal is also given .
A WARNING
-Always observe the warnings in
¢ page 213, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the hood and checking the brake flu id .
- Driv ing with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard. Stop the car and get professional
assistance.
- USA models: If the 1111 warn ing light,
the
G1 warning light and the m;B warn­
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels co uld lock up first unde r hard
braking. Rear wheel lock-up can cause
loss of vehicle con tro l an d an accident .
Have your vehicle repai red immedia tely
by your aut ho rized Audi dea le r or a quali ­
fied workshop. Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake applications.
- Canada models: If the brake warn ing
light ., the
DJ warning light and the
ABS warning light
BJ come on together,
the rear wheels could lock up first unde r
hard braking. Rear wheel lock-up can
cause loss of vehicle control and an acc i­
dent . Have yo ur vehicle repaired immed i­
ately by your authori zed A udi dealer or a
qu alifie d wo rkshop. Dr ive slowly and
avo id su dden, hard brake appli cat ions.
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
no t go out afte r a few se con ds and the
par king brake is released, or lights up
whi le you are driving, the fluid level in
the brake f luid reservoir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediately at low speed to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility and have the brake system in­
spected.
- Always keep in mind that after severa l
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with max imum stopping power
in critical s ituations . You must allow for
increased braking distances. The extra
d istance used up by fading bra kes could
le ad to an ac cident.
:l~/(®) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake .
If the indicator light . (USA models)/ .
(Canada models) turns on, the pa rking brake
was set. If the parking brake is set when the
ignition is off, the ind icator light turns off af­
ter abo ut 20 seconds.
The wa rning/i ndicator lig ht will go out when
the pa rking brake is re leased .

tion: Vehicle parked too ste ep
If the indicator light b links and the message
appears, there is not enough braking power to
keep the vehicle from roll ing . The brakes have
overheated . The veh icle cou ld roll away eve n
o n a sma ll incline .
Press brake pedal to release parking bra ke
To re lease the parking brake, press the brake
pedal and press t he button(® or start driving
with starting assist at the same time

T o re lease the par king b rake manually , p ress
t h e b rake peda l and press the button{®) at
the same time. The pa rking brake on ly releas­
es automatically if the driver's safety be lt is
fastened.

If the 11,1 indicator light turns on and t his
message appears, the re is a parki ng b rake

In o rder to connect the special diagnostic
equipment, push the plug into the Data Link
Connector (DLC) . The DLC is located to the
right of the hood release ¢
fig. 18.
Your authorized A udi dealer or qualified work­
shop can interpret the code and perform the necessary repa ir.
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for
personal use. Incorrect usage can cause
malfunctions, which can increase the risk
of a coll is ion!
Electronic speed limiter
-
Your veh icle may be factory equipped with
tires that are rated for a maximum speed of 130 mph (210 km/ h). Thi s is may be less than
the maximum speed of your ve hicle. To red uce
the risk of sudden ti re failure and loss of con ­
trol if the vehicle is operated at excessive
speeds, your vehicle has an e lectronic speed
limiter. The electronic speed limiter prevents
your veh icle from going faster than the t ire
speed rat ing . For more informat ion
¢ page 246 .
If the engine control unit rece ives fa ulty vehi ­
cle roadspeed signa ls, the Ma lfunction Indica­
tor Light (MIL)
¢..ij w ill illuminate . If this oc­
curs, contact the nearest authorized Audi
deale r for assistance.

Always observe the posted speed limits
and ad just yo ur speed to suit p revail ing
road, t raff ic and weather conditions . Never
drive your vehicle faster than the maxi ­

The engine hood is released from inside the
vehicle .

Before opening the engine hood, make sure
that the windshield w ipers are flat against the
windshield. Otherwise, they could damage the
paint on the hood.

instrument panel in the direction of the ar­
row

Hot engine coo lant can burn you.
- To redu ce the r isk of being burned, never
open the hood if yo u see or hear steam
or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment. Wait until no steam or Checkin
g and fillin g 219
coolant can be seen or heard before care­
fully opening the hood.
Closing the engine hood
.. Pull the hood down until the pressure from
the struts is reduced .

drop down and latch in place.
Do not try to push it shut; it may fail to en­
gage

A hood that is not comple tely latched
could fly up and b lock your view while dr iv­
ing.
- When you close the engine hood, chec k it
to make sure the safety catch has p ro pe r­
ly engaged . The hood sho uld be flush
with the surrounding vehicle body parts .
-If you notice while driv ing that the hood
is not secured prope rly, stop at once and
close it.
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the engine compartment .
Whenever yo u mu st p erform an y w or k in th e
eng in e compa rtment, for example checking
and filling differ ent fluid s, there i s a ri sk of
injury , burns and accidents. To prevent per­
sonal injury always obser ve the following

To help avoid injury, before you check any­
thing under the hood:
- Turn off the engine.
- Remove the ignition key.
- Apply the parking brake .
- Move selector lever of automatic trans -
mission to "P" (Park); p ut manual trans­
miss ion in Neutral.
- Always let the engine cool down. Hot
components w ill burn skin on contact .
