The light illum inates when the ignition is
switched on. It goes out after the engine has
been started. Th is indicates that the brake
warn ing light is functioning properly.
If the brake warning light doe s not light up
when the engine i s cranking , the re m ay be a malfunction in the elect

- Driv ing with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard. Stop the car and get professional
assista nee.
- USA models: If the 1111 warn ing light,
the
G1 warning light and the (i1!B warn­
ing light come on together, the rea r
wheels co uld lock up first unde r hard
braking. Rear wheel lock-up can cause
loss of vehicle con trol and an accident.
Have your vehicle repaired immediately
by you r authorized Aud i dea ler or a quali­
fied workshop. Drive slowly and avoid
sudden, hard brake applications.
- Canada models: If the brake warning
light •• the
DJ warn ing light and the
ABS warning light
ti] come on together,
the rear wheels could lock up first under
hard braking. Rear wheel lock-up can
cause loss of vehicle control and an acc i­
dent. Have yo ur vehicle repaired immed i­
a tely by your authori zed A udi dealer or a
qualifie d workshop. Dr ive slowly and
avo id sudden, hard brake applicat ions.
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out afte r a few seconds and the
par king brake is released, or lights up
whi le you are driving, the fluid level in
the brake fluid reservoir is too low. If you believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediately at low speed to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair
facility and have the brake system in­ spected. -
Always keep in mind that after severa l
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with max imum s topping powe r
in critical s ituations . You must allow for
increased braking dis tan ces. The extra
d istance u sed up by fading br akes could
lead to an acciden t.
:l~ /(® ) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake.
If the indicato r light . (USA models)/ .
(Canada mode ls) turns on, the pa rking brake
was set. If the pa rking brake is set when the
ignition is off, the indicator light turns off a f­
te r abo ut 20 seconds .
The wa rning/indicator lig ht wi ll go out when
the pa rking brake is re leased.
• (USA models ) /. (Can ada models) Cau­
tion: Vehicle parked too steep
If the indicator light b links and the message
appears, there is not enough braking power to
keep the vehicle from rolling . The brakes have
overheated . The vehicle cou ld roll away eve n
o n a sma ll incline .
Press brake pedal to release parking brake
To release the parking b rake, press the brake
peda l and press the button(®) or start dr iving
with starting assist at the same time

To re lease the par king brake manually , p ress
the b rake peda l and press the button<®> at
the same time. The pa rking brake on ly re leas­
es automatically if the driver's safety be lt is
fastened.

You can compensate for th is sligh tly re duced
brak ing power by push ing harder on the brake
pedal. Avoid heavy braking loads d uring the
break-in per iod.
Operating condit ion s and d riv ing hab it s
The brakes on today's automobi les are st ill
subject to wear, depend ing largely on operat ­
ing conditions and driving habits¢.&. . On
vehicles that are either driven mostly in stop­ and-go city traffic or are driven hard, the brake pads should be checked by your author­
i zed Audi dealer more often than specified i n
the
Warranty & Maint enan ce booklet . Failure
to have your brake pads inspected can result
in reduced b rake performance.
On steep slopes, you should use the brak ing
effect of the engine . Th is way, you prevent un­
necessary wea r on the brake system. If you
must use you r brakes, do not hold the brakes
down continuously. P ump the b rakes a t inter ­
va ls.
Operating noise
Noises may occur when braking depending on
the speed, braki ng force and outside condi­
tions such a s tempe ratu re a nd h umidity .
Due to the nature of the materials used i n ce ­
ramic brake rotors*, nois es may become more
apparent at low speeds.
Effect of w ater and ro ad s alt
In certain situat ions, for example after driving
through water, i n heavy ra in, after over night
condensation or after washing your car, the
b rak ing effect can be reduced by moistu re or
i ce on the bra ke roto rs and b rake pads . The
b ra kes must be dried fi rs t w it h a few caref ul
b ra ke app lications.
At h igher speeds and with the w indshield w ip­
e rs turned on, the brake pads p ress against
the brake rotors for a short amount of time.
This occurs a t reg ular in tervals wi tho ut the
d river noticing and provides for better brake
response time un der wet conditions.
The effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced
when the vehi cle is dr iven o n a salt -cove re d

road and the b ra kes are no t used. Likewise ,
you clean off acc umulated salt coating from
brake d iscs and pads with a few cautio us ap ­
plications of the brake

Due to the ir sur face character istics, ceramic
brake rotors* absorb moisture i n such condi­
tions. T his can cause a tempo rary reduction in
braking force compared to dry brakes. Yo u can
compensate for this by pressing the brake
pedal harder .
Corrosio n
There may be a tendency for dirt to b uild up
on the brake pads and corros ion to form on
the d iscs if the car is not driven regularly or
o nly for short trips w ith litt le use of the
brakes .
If the brakes are not used frequently, or if cor­
ros ion has formed on the discs, i t is adv isable
to clean off the pads a nd d iscs by braking
firmly a few times from a moderately high
speed

Fault s in the brake sy stem
If you shou ld notice a sudden increase in
brake pedal travel, then one of the two b rake
c ircui ts may have failed ¢&. .
Lo w brake fluid lev el
Malfunctions can occ ur in the brake system if
the brake fluid level is too low. The brake fluid
level is monitored electronica lly.
Brake booster
T he br ake booster inc reases the pressure tha t
yo u gene rate with t he brake peda l. It works
o nl y when t he engine is running .¢

Brake lining wear status
B ra ke lining wear may be checked by visual in­
spe ction o f the condition of the bra ke pads
th rough the open ings in the wheel. If neces ­
sary, the wheel may be removed for t his in ­

General information
Regular core preserves vehicle value.
Any automobile is exposed to industrial
fumes , corrosive road salt, etc. A well cared
for Audi can look like new many years after
purchase . Regu lar and correct care w ill con­

your Aud i.

Your authorized Audi dealer has a variety of
dedic ated veh icle-car e products and can ad ­
vise which ones to use for cleaning the exter i­
or and interior of your vehicle.
Whether you use products recommended by
Aud i or other commercially available clean ing
agents, please make sure you apply them cor­
rectly .
A WARNING
-Cleaning agents may be poisonous. Keep
them out of the reach of children.
- Heed all caut ion labels.
- Always read directions on the container
before using any product. Follow the di­
rect ions carefu lly.
- Most chemical cleaners are concentrated
and have to be diluted .
- Use spot removing fluids only in well
ventilated areas.
- Do not use gasoline, kerosene, d iesel
fuel, nail polish remover or other volatile
fluids. They may be toxic, flammab le or
haza rdous in other ways. Do not wash,
wax or dry the vehicle with the ign it ion
on or the engine running.
- Do not clean the undersides of chassis,
fenders, wheel covers, e tc. w ithout pro­
tecting your hands and arms. You may c u t yourself on sharp -edged metal parts .

Care of exterior
Washing
Frequent washing protects the vehicle .
The best protection against environmental i n­
fluences is
frequent washing and waxing . How
often t his is required depends on:
- How much the veh icle is used
- Where the veh icle is parked (garage, in the
open under trees, etc.)
- The seasonal and weather conditions
- Environmental infl uences
T he longer b ird droppings, insects, tree resin,
road and indus tria l gr ime, ta r, soot, road salt
and other materials remain on the vehicle
body, the more lasting their destructive ef­
fects wi ll be . High temperatures caused by ex­
posure to intense sun light intens ify the corro­
s ive effect, particularly when humid ity is high
as well.
Under certain circumstances,
weekl y washing
may be necessary. Under other cond itions, a
monthly washing and waxing may be ade­
quate .
After the winter, the underside of the vehicle
should be thoroughly washed, preferab ly in a
professional car wash .

Releasing and opening the engine hood
The engine hood is released from inside the
vehicle .

Before opening the engine hood, make sure
that the windshield wipers are flat against the
windshield. Otherwise, they could damage the
paint on the hood.

- When you close the engine hood, chec k it
to make sure the safety catch has p rope r­
ly engaged . The hood sho uld be flush
with the surrounding vehicle body parts .
-If you notice while driv ing that the hood
is not secured properly, stop at once and
close it.
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the engine compartment .
Whenever yo u mu st p erform an y w or k in th e
eng ine compa rtment, for example checking
and filling differ ent fluid s, there i s a ri sk of
injury , burn s and accide nts. To prevent per­
sonal injury al ways obser ve the foll owing

To help avoid injury, before you check any­
thing under the hood:
- Turn off the engine.
- Remove the ignition key.
- Apply the parking brake .
- Move selector lever of automatic trans -
mission to "P" (Park).
- Always le t the engine cool down . Hot
components wi ll bur n skin on contact .

-If you drain the coolant, it must be
caught and safely stored in a proper con­
tainer clearly marked "poison".

-Do not add any type of radiator leak seal­
ant to your vehicle's engine coo lant.
Adding rad iator repair fluid may adverse­
ly affect the function and performance of
your cooling system and could result in
damage not covered by your New Vehicle Limited Warranty .
- Coolant pollutes the environment and
could cause an engine fire . Excess cool­
ant wil l be forced out through the pres­
s u re re lief valve in the cap when the en­
gine becomes hot.
- If, in an emergency , only water can be
added, the correct ratio between wate r
and antifreeze

Dra ined coolant should not be reused. Al­
ways dispose of used coolant while observ­ ing all environmental regulations.
Radiator fan
The radiator fan switches on automatically by
itself.
The radiator fan is dr iven by the engine via the
V-be lt . T he viscous clutch regulates the speed
of the fan accord ing to the temperature o f the
coolant .
A n auxiliary e lectr ic radiator fan* switches on
and off depending on coolant temperature
and other vehi cle operating conditions.
After you switch the engine off, the auxiliary
fan can cont inue runn ing for up to 10 minutes
- even with the ignition off.
It can even sw itch
on again later by itself

- the temperature of the engine coolant rises
due to the heat bu ild-up from the eng ine in
the engine compartment, or -
the engine compa rtment heats up because
the vehicle is parked in intense sunlight.

- To reduce the risk of personal injury nev­
er touch the radiator fan.
- The auxiliary electric fan is temperature
contro lled and can switch on suddenly
even when the engine is not running.
- The auxiliary radiator fan sw itches on au­
tomatically when the engine coo lant
reaches a certain temperature and will
continue to run until the coolant temper ­
ature drops .
