The ill umi nat ion fo r th e i nstru me nt cl uster
lights up whe never yo u switch on the i gni
tion with t he
vehicle headlights off . As
the daylight fades, the instrument cluster illumi nat ion likewise dims automatically
a n d w ill go out completely when t he out
side light is very low. This feat ure is meant
to remind you to switch on the headlights
w hen o utside lig ht con dit io ns become
poor.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The eng ine coolant gauge q page 10, fig. 3 CD
only works when the ignition is on. To p revent
damage to you r engine, please note the fol
lowing impor tant po ints:
Engine cold
As long as the needle remains at or close to
the bottom of the gauge, the engi ne still has
not reached its operat ing temperature . Avoid
high eng ine speeds, heavy eng ine loads and
heavy th rottle a pplicat io ns.
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operat ing
temperature, the needle w ill move into the
midd le of the gauge and rema in the re. If th e
engine is worki ng ha rd at high outside tem
peratures, the needle may rise up. This is no
need to worry as long as the. warning light
i n the i nstr ument cluster does not ill uminate.
Warning light in the instrument cluster
When the. warn ing light in the inst rument
cluster s tarts to flash, th is can mean one of
two things : eithe r the coo lant
temperature is .,..

Speedometer with odometer
The speedometer shows you the vehicle
speed, and the odometer shows you how many miles (kilometers) you have driven.

The odometer and trip odometer are located
inside the speedometer.

- Canada models -Kilometers
You can switch the display from miles to kilo meters and vice versa via the MMI. You can
find out more in the MMI manual.
Lower odometer
The lower odometer shows the total number
of mi les (kilometers) driven.
Upper odometer (trip odometer)
The upper odometer shows the tota l number
of mi les (kilometers) driven since you last re
set the odometer to zero. You can use this od
ometer when you want to keep track of how many miles (k ilometers) you have driven for a
single trip or errand. The last digit indicates
1/10 of a mile (100 meters).
You can reset the trip odometer to zero by
pressing the Reset button
~o.
Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the in
strument cluster,
dEF will appear in the trip
odometer and will stay on. Contact your au
thorized Audi dealer to have the problem cor
rected.

- When you open t he driver door, the time,
date and odometer are disp layed for an
add itiona l 30 seconds.
- You can also call up the display with the
I CHECK I button c> page 12 while the ig
nition is switched off.
Fuel gauge
The fue l gauge only works when the ignition is
on .
When the needle reaches the reserve mark,
the
c> page 35 00] symbol appears in the in
strument cluster d isplay as well as the mes
sage
Please refuel. This message is meant to
remind you to
refuel.
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed
in
.:> page 322 .
@ Note
Never run the tank completely dry. An ir
regular supply of fuel can cause engine
misfiring and fuel could enter the exhaust
system. The catalytic converter could then
overheat and be damaged.

Switching on the clock and odometer
W ith the ignition turned off, the o dometer
reading and the digital clo ck w it h date display
can be sw itched on for abo ut 30 seconds by
pressing the
I CH ECK i button ¢ fig. 6 .
Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system ¢ page 30 constan t
l y m oni tors ce rtai n in dividual f unct io ns and
components o f the vehicle when the ignition
is t urned on and w hen the veh icle is moving.
W ith the igni tion tu rned on , you can st art the
"Au to-C hec k seque nce" by pre ssing the
ICHECK I button. You can pe rform an A uto
Check sequence when the ve hicle is stationary
and the ign ition is turned on or when the vehi
cle is moving not faster than
3 mph (5 km/h).
The numbe r of keys programmed to the veh i
cle is a lso d isplayed. The d isp lay
3 \3 indicates
that three keys have be en programmed . This
allows yo u to make sure you have rece ived a ll
of the keys when you purchase a used vehicle.
F or exam ple, if you on ly receive two keys, you
should take those keys to your authorized
Audi dealer to have the missing key deactivat
ed so it cannot be used. You sho uld also re
port the m issi ng key to you r insurance compa
ny .
Call ing up the driver information
A yellow or red symbol appears in the instru
ment cluster display, usually w ith a dr iver
message . The driver message display disap
pears after about 5 seconds . The driver mes
sage can be displayed aga in by briefly press
ing the
! CHECK I button .
Setting the speed warning
By pressing the I CH ECK i button briefly, yo u
can set thres hold 1 of the speed warning whi
le you a re drivi ng

Instrument cluster illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for
the instruments, the center console and the
display can be adjusted.

(ESC)
This warning/indicator light monitors the
Electronic Stabilization Control.
If the JjJ indicator lamp blinks while driving,
the ESC or ASR (Ant i-S lip Regulation) is active
l y regulating.
If th€
JjJ indicator lamp illuminates, the sys
tem has switched the ESC off. In this case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESC on again. The system is func
tioning comp letely whe n the indicator lamp
switches off .
If the
i indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched off with the
I ~ O FF I button.
St abili zation con trol (E SC/ ABS): Fa ult! See
owner 's manu al
If th€ J_j) indicator lamp and the [I] ABS indi
cator lamp illuminate and the dr iver message
appears, the ABS or e lectronic differential lock
i s ma lfunctioning . This also interrupts the
ESC. The brakes st ill function with the ir nor
mal power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to your authorized Aud i dealer immedi ·
ately to have the malfunction corrected .

The I (USA models)/ . (Canada models) in
d icator light monitors the safety systems (e .g.
a irbags, pretensioners) and illuminates for a
few seconds each time you switch the ignition
on.
I f the
I (USA models) • (Canada models)
i ndi cator light does not go out, or if it illumi
nates w hile you are driv ing, or if it sta rts to
b link, then there is a ma lfunct ion somewhere
in the system. If the light does not illuminate
when you switch the ignition on, this also
means there is a ma lfunction.
A WARNING
If you have a ma lfunction in the safety sys
tems, contact your authorized Audi dealer
i mmediately. Otherwise the safety sys
tems may not work properly in an acc i
den t.
¢ Q Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal .
Whenever you use the left a or the right .
turn s ignal, the indicator light blinks . When
you use the emergency flashers, both indica tor lights flash .
If one of the turn signa l light bulbs burn out,
the turn signal will blink twice as fast as nor mal.
This does not apply, however, in towing mode.
The ind icator light does not flash if a turn sig
nal is out on the trailer or the towing veh icle .

¢1¢ Trailer turn signal assembly
Applies to veh icles: w ith towing hitch
The indicator light also blinks if the turn sig
nal is operated when towing a trailer.
The ind icator light. bli nks when the turn
s ignal is used, if a tra iler has been proper ly
co nn ected to the vehicle.
If one of the turn signa l bulbs on the trailer is
burned out or defective, the ind icator light
will not blink when you use the turn signa ls .
(D Tips
For vehicles with a factory installed towing
hitch or a trailer hitch that was installed
later according to factory spec ificat ions,
the trailer turn sig nal assembly is actuat
ed.

because low-lying vehicle parts can bot
tom out as you drive over uneven ground
and be damaged as a result.
~ Safety belts
This warning/indicator light reminds you to
put on your safety belt.
The . warning/indicator light ill uminates
when the ignition is switched on to remind
the driver and (on USA models only) any front passenger to put on the safety belt . Add ition
ally, an acoustic warning (gong) wi ll also
sound.

The ii warning/indicator light illuminates
when the high beams are on or when you use
the head light flasher . For more informat ion
about using the high beams, see

(J) Tire pressure monitoring system -
telltale ind icator lamp
The warning/indicator light appears in the
event of a significant loss of tire pressure or if
there is a malfunction .
The indicator light IE illuminates to check
the function when you switch on the ignition.
If the
IE symbol remains on or blinks after
you switch on the ignition, there is a loss of
tire pressure or a system malfunction. If there
is a system malfunction, see your authorized
Aud i dealer as soon as possible.

CRUISE/'(-) Cruise control
The (ij;\1)~1~ (USA models) /. (Canada mod
e ls) warn ing/indicator light illuminates when
the cruise contro l is activated.
ABS /(8) Anti -lock brake system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The E (USA models) ;fl] (Canada mode ls)
warning/indicator light will come on for a few
seconds when the ignition is sw itched on . T he
l ight will go out after an automatic check se
quence is comp leted.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illumi
nate when you switch on the ignition.
- The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light illuminates
while driving.
The brake system will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS system.
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible to restore full braking performance.

The ABS warning light and the brake warn
ing light come on together. The ABS will not
work and you will notice a change in braking
response and performance.
Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light ~ page 19 and
the ABS warning ill uminate

may be a malfunction in the ABS, and there
may also be a malfunction in the brake system

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together with the ABS. The
ABS wa rning lig ht will come on if there is a
malfu nction in the EDL system

A WARNING
- If the E (USA models) ,11J (Canada
models) warning light does not go out,
or if it comes on while driving, the ABS
system is not working properly. The vehi
cle can then be stopped only with the
standard brakes (without ABS). You will
not have the protection ABS provides.
Contact your authorized Aud i dea le r as
soon as possible .
-USA models: If the 1111 warn ing light
and the
E warn ing light come on to
ge ther, the rear wheels could lock up
first under hard braking . Rear wheel lock
up can cause loss of vehicle control and

The warning/indicator light flashes if brake
fluid level is low, if there is an ABS system
malfunction or a parking brake malfunction.

It goes out after the eng ine has been
started . This indicates that the bra ke warning
li gh t is func tioning properly.
If th e brake warning light do es not light up
wh en the engin e is cran king, ther e may be a
malfunction in the electrical syst em . In thi s
case, c onta ct your Audi dealer .
If the brake system warn ing/indicator light

Introduction
General notes
The driver informa tion display inside the in
strument cluster provides you, the driver,
with much useful information.

Information from the Driver Information Sys
tem is shown in the display in the center of
the instrument cluster.
When you turn on the ignition and while you
are driving, some functions and vehicle com
ponents are scanned for their operating sta
tus. Malfunctions or required service proce
dures are signalled aud ibly and shown by red
and yellow lighted symbols and rem inders to
the dr iver in the display.
The driver is also shown information about ra
d io and CD operation and directions for the
nav igation system . You can f ind additional in
formation on these subjects in the MMI man
ua l.
