- The fuel economy messages are not dis­
played in every instance, but rather in in­
tervals over a period of time.
On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
T he Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢4 in
the instrument cluster
Q page 14, fig. 8 is
part o f the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) sys­
tem.
T he warning/indicator light illuminates when
the ignition is switched on and goes out after
the engine starts and the idle has stabilized .
T his indicates that the MIL is working proper ­
ly .
If the light does not go out after the engine
is started, or illuminates while you are driv­
ing, a malfunction may exist in the engine sys ­
tem. If the light illuminates, the catalytic con­
verter could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoid­
ing sustained high speeds and/or rapid accel­
erat ions) and have the condition corrected .

If the light illuminates, the electronic speed limiter may also be malfunctioning. For more

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the compo­
nents of your emission control system . Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been ass igned a code . In case of a mal­
function, the component will be identified
and the fault stored as a code in the control
module memo ry.
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery sys­
tem .
If the light illuminates after a refueling,
stop the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler
cap is properly closed

In order to make an accurate diagnosis , the
stored data can only be displayed using spe ­
cial diagnostic equipment (generic scan tool
f or OBD).
In order to connect the spec ia l diagnostic
equipment , push the plug into the Data Link
Connector (DLC). Th e DLC is located to the
right of the hood release

Your authorized Audi dea ler or qualified work­
shop can interpret the code and perform the
necessary repair.
~ ARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for
personal use. Incorrect usage can cause
malfunctions, which can increase the risk
of a collision!

Usu ally, you can still drive to the nex t dea ler­
ship. Turn off all but the most necessary elec­
trica l consumers, since these drain the vehi­
cle's battery.

BRAKE/( (j)) Brake system malfunction
A malfunction in the brake system must be
repaired as soon as possible .
If the warn ing /indicator light ~ (USA
models)/ . (Canada mode ls) in the instru­
ment cluster flashes, there is a brake system
malfunct ion . A dr iver message appears as
well to explain the malfunction in mo re de­
tail. The d rive r warning goes out after about 5
seconds, b ut i t can be brought up at any time

- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety

gethe r, the rear whee ls cou ld lock up
fi rst under hard bra king. Rear wheel lock­
up can ca use loss of vehicle co ntrol and
an ac cident. Have yo ur vehicle rep aire d
immediate ly by yo ur authorize d Au di
dea ler o r a qua lified wor kshop. Drive
slowly and avo id sudden, hard brake ap­
plications.
- Canada models: If the brake warning
light . and the ABS warning light

come on together, the rear wheels could
lock up first under hard braking. Rear
wheel lock-up can cause loss of vehicle
control and an acc ident. Have yo ur vehi­
cle repaired immed iately by your author­
i z ed A udi dealer o r a q ual ified wor kshop.

brake applications .

T he red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair. Driving with a low
oil pressure indication is likely to
cause severe engine damage .

e l. Do not rely on it. Instead, check the
oil level in your engine at regular inter­
vals, preferably each time you refuel, and always before going on a long trip .

tion is turned on or while driving and it goes
out again after a while, the battery has been
adequately recharged .

out again
If this driver notification appea rs after the ig ­
nition is turned on or while driving and does
not go out again, the battery's state of charge
is not in the optimal range. Starting capab ility
is restricted . Have the battery checked at an
authorized Audi dealer or other qualif ied
workshop as soon as possible .

engine control malfunct ion. The indicator

nates . The engine speed is limited to the
speed displayed in the driver informat ion sys­
tem. Keep in mind that the engine speed will
not exceed the value displayed in the driver in­
f o rmation system, for example when down­
shifting .
Please go to an authorized Audi dealer or oth­
er qualified workshop to have the malfunction
repaired.

that adaptive light is defective. Go to an au­

-The operation of the remote contro l key
can be temporarily disrupted by interfer­
ence from transmitters in the vicinity of
the veh icle work ing in the same frequen­
cy range (e .g . a cell phone, radio equip ­
ment) .
- If you open the dr iver's door with the key
left in the ign ition lock, a chime will
sound . This is your reminder to remove
the key and lock the door .
- For security reasons , replacement keys
are only available from Aud i dea lers .
