8_ WARNING
-Unintended vehicle movement can cause
serious injury .
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear. If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running,
activate the parking brake and move the
selector lever to P.
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake when
the engine is running and the selector lever is in D/S or R or "tiptronic" mode is
selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position
while the vehicle is stationary and the
engine is running.
- Never shift into
R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, re-
duce your speed and shift into a lower
gear with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases
braking distance or causes complete fail­
ure of the brake system .
- To preven t the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it
in place with the brake pedal or parking
brake.
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with
a slipping clutch . The clutch opens auto­
matically when it becomes too hot from
the overload. An indicator lamp
[O] illu­
minates and a driver message appears
Q page 128when the clutch is overload­
ed.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and
is locked in P with the parking brake set
Q page 226, Engine compartment . 0th-erwise, any increase in engine speed may
set the vehicle in motion, even with the
parking brake applied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incline , do not try
to hold the vehicle in place by pressing
the accelerator pedal while a driving gear is selected. This can cause the transmis­
sion to overheat and can damage it. Acti­
vate the parking brake or press the brake
pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling .
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when the en ­
gine is stopped and the selector lever is
in N will damage the transmission be­
cause it is not lubricated under those cir­
cumstances.
@ Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driv­
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the
driver when driving down declines.
Hill descent control is activated when these­
lector lever is in D /S and you press the brake
pedal. The transmission automatically selects
a gear that is suitable for the incline. Hill de­
scent control tries to maintain the speed ach­
ieved at the time of braking, within physical
and technical limitations. If may still be nec­
essary to adjust the speed with the brakes .
Hill descent control switches off once the de­
cline levels out or you press the accelerator
pedal.
When the speed is set in the cruise control
system
q page 95, hill descent control is also
activated.
A WARNING
-
Hill descent control cannot overcome
physical limitations, so it may not be able
to maintain a constant speed under all

The reorview camera switches on automati­
cally together with the acoustic and visual
pork assist when you put the vehicle in re­ verse .

210 Driving off road
Breakover angle
Indicates the angle up to which the veh icle
can drive over a ramp at low speed without
the underside of the vehicle hitting the edge
of the ramp. Maximum permitted breakover
angle: 17°
Approach/departure angle
Transition from the horizontal pla ne to a g ra­
dient or from a grade back to level ground. In­
dicates the angle up to which the vehicle can
drive onto or off a slope at low speed without
striking the bumper or the underbody. Maxi­
mum permitted approach/departure angle :
25° (front), 20° (rear)
Ground clearance
The distance between the road surface and
the lowest point of the vehicle underbody.
Ground clearance 7.9 in (200 mm)
A WARNING
Exceeding the stated maximum figures
-
can result in severe injuries or vehicle dam­
age.
- All the information was gathered on lev­
el, firm and non-slippery road surfaces,
and under dry weather conditions.
- Ideal conditions do not prevail offroad.
Never utilize the maximum readings to
their fullest, always leave a safety re­ serve.
Driving tips
On poor road and offroad, there is always on ­
ly one motto: Plan ahead and drive slowly!
Please observe the following when dr iving
away from paved roads:
• Drive only on roads and offroad sections
wh ich match the design of your vehicle and
your abilities as a dr iver. Never take risks!
• Drive slowly and plan ahead!
• Take into consideration the
ground clear­
ance
of your vehicle.

when driving down steep sections on hi lls .
Unpaved roads and offroad
Drive slowly on unfamiliar roads and unknown
offroad sections, and look o ut for unexpected
obstacles (e.g . potholes, ro cks, tree stumps,
etc.).
To prevent the vehicle from bottoming and
avo id damage to the underbody, you should
drive straig ht across severe bumps in the
ground with only one side o f the ve hicle so
that only two of yo ur whee ls cross the bumps.
Drive briskly through sandy or marshy offroad
sections and do not stop , if at all possible.
Driving through water
Note the follow ing to avoid veh icle damage
when driving through water, for example on
flooded roads:
- The water must not be any higher than the
bottom of the vehicle body.
- Do not drive faster than walk ing speed .
Driving on a slope
If you ever find yourse lf not able to climb a
s lope, do not try to turn around, drive back
down in
reverse. Otherwise, you run the r isk
of tipp ing over.
If the vehicle threatens to tip over when
driving across a slope, you must immediate­
ly steer downhill in the direction of the
slope.
Do not park your vehicle on steep s lopes or
grades.
T o red uce the risk of tipping over, drive on
s lopes in the direction of the downward slope
(fall line) -
not crosswise.
A WARNING
-~
After driving through water, mud, slush,
etc ., the brakes may be s low to take effect
because of wet brake rotors and pads. Dry
the brakes first by braking carefully to re-
store the full braking effect. .,..

Filling a tire
.. Shake the bottle thorough ly before fi lling.
.. Screw the accompanying filling hose com-
pletely onto the bottle. This breaks through
the foi l seal automatically at the connec ­
t ion .
.. Remove the valve cap from the tire valve
and unscrew the valve insert using the ac­
companying va lve inser t tool

.. Lay the valve insert on a clean surface.
.. Remove the sealing plug from the filling
hose and connect the hose to the tire va lve .
.. Hold the bottle with the bottom fac ing up­
ward and empty the entire contents into the
tire.
.. Then pull out the hose and screw the valve
i nsert t ightly back into the tire valve .

Inflating a tir e
.. Sc rew the fill ing hose for the compressor
onto the t ire valve and insert the connector
into the cigarette lighter .
.. Inflate the tire to between 29 PSI (200 kPA)
and 36 PSI (250 kPA) and read the pressure
on the gauge .
.. If this t ire pressure is not reached, dr ive
your veh icle approximately 33 ft (10 meters)
forward or backward so that the sealant can be red istributed inside the tire. If at th is
t ime the required a ir pressure st ill canno t be
reached, the tire is too bad ly damaged and
cannot be repaired w ith the t ire sea lant .
Final inspection
... Stop the vehicle aft er driving for about 10
m inutes and check the tire pressure.
... If the tire pressure is lower than 19 PSI
(130 kPA), then the tire is too severely dam­
aged. Do not continue driving . Please seek
professiona l assistance .
A WARNING
-Turn on the emergency flashers if you
have a flat tire w hile in mov ing traffic .
This is for your protect ion and the for the
safety of other drivers.
- Take care to move all of the passengers
to a safe place (behind a guard ra il for
examp le) .
- Read and follow the manufacturer's safe­
ty precautions on the compresso r and in
the instructions on the bottle of sealant!
- If a tire pressure of 29 PSI (200 kPA)
cannot reached afte r inflat ing for 12 m i­
nutes, then the t ire is too severe ly dam­
aged. Do not cont inue drivi ng.
- Obta in q ual ified help if it is not possible
to pe rform the repair wit h the tire seal­
a nt .
- If the tire pressure is less than 19 PSI
(130 kPA) afte r 10 minutes of driving,
