er’s weight and the riding conditions.NOTICEECB01090Never turn the adjusting mechanism beyond
the minimum and maximum settings.Adjust the spring preload as follows.
1. Remove the seat. (See page 4-12.)
2. Disconnect the hose, and then remove the hose joint from the air filter case. 3. Disconnect the hose from the air intake duct,
and then loosen the clamp screw at the carbu-
retor side.

44. Remove the bolts, and then remove the air fil-ter case by disconnecting the air intake duct
from the carburetor. 5. Loosen the locknut.
6. Turn the spring preload adjusting nut in direc-
tion (a) to increase the spring preload and
thereby harden the suspension, and in direc-
tion (b) to decrease the spring preload and
thereby soften the suspension.

48. Place the air filter case in the original position,
connect the air intake duct, and then tighten
the clamp screw at the carburetor side.
NOTICE: Make sure that the air intake duct
is properly connected to the carburetor,
and that the clamp screw is tightened se-
curely.

9. Install the bolts, install the hose joint, and then connect the hoses.
10. Install the seat.
WARNING
EWB00450This shock absorber assembly contains highly
pressurized nitrogen gas. If the shock absorb-
er assembly is damaged, it could explode
causing injury or property damage. Shock ab-
sorber cylinder damage could also result in
poor handling which could cause an accident.
Do not tamper with or attempt to open the
cylinder assembly.
Do not subject the shock absorber assembly
to an open flame or other high heat.

Do not deform or damage the cylinder in any
way.
Do not dispose of a damaged or worn out
shock absorber assembly yourself. Take the
shock absorber assembly to a Yamaha deal-
er for any service.
Tightening torque: Locknut:44 Nm (4.4 m ·kgf, 32 ft· lbf)

bottom of the air filter case. NOTICE: Undrained
water can cause damage or improper opera-

813. Remove the radiator cap to check the coolant
level in the radiator. If it is low, add sufficient
coolant until it reaches the top of the radiator,
and then install the radiator cap.
14. Start the engine, and then check for coolant leakage.
TIPIf any leakage is found, have a Yamaha dealer
check the cooling system.15. Install the panel.EBU23707Cleaning the air filter element The air filter element should be cleaned at the in-
tervals specified in the periodic maintenance and
lubrication chart. Clean or, if necessary, replace
the air filter element more frequently if you are
riding in unusually wet or dusty areas.TIPThere is a check hose at the bottom of the air filter
case. If dust or water collects in this hose, empty
the hose and clean the air filter element and air fil-
ter case.
