PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR
ECA10010CAUTION:
Do not operate the vehicle until you
know that the engine oil level is suf-
ficient.
EWA10360
WARNING0
Never remove the engine oil tank
cap after high-speed operation,
otherwise hot engine oil could
spout out and cause damage or in-
jury. Always let the engine oil cool
down sufficiently before removing
the oil tank cap.
4. If the engine oil is below the mini-
mum level mark, add sufficient oil
of the recommended type to raise
it to the correct level.
5. Install the oil filler cap.
To change the engine oil
(with or without oil filter element
replacement)
1. Start the engine, warm it up for
several minutes, and then turn
it off.
2. Place the motorcycle on its side
stand, then place an oil pan under
the oil tank and another under the
engine to collect the used oil.
3. Remove the engine oil filler cap
and the drain bolt to drain the oil
from the crankcase.
4. Remove the drain bolt to drain the
oil from the oil tank.
1. Engine oil crankcase drain bolt
2. Engine oil tank drain bolt
5. Remove the oil filter element
drain bolt to drain the oil from the
oil filter element.
6-9
NOTE:
Make sure that the O-rings are proper-
ly seated.
9. Install the oil drain bolts, and then
tighten them to the specified
torques.
PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR
1. Engine oil filter element drain bolt
2. Oil filter element cover bolts
NOTE:
Skip steps 6-8 if the oil filter element is
not being replaced.
6. Remove the oil filter element cov-
er by removing the bolts.
7. Remove and replace the oil filter
element and O-rings.
8. Install the oil filter element cover
by installing the bolts and the oil
filter element drain bolt, then
tightening them to the specified
torques.

Recommended engine oil:
See page 8-1.
Oil quantity:
Without oil filter element
replacement:
3.0 L (3.17 US qt) (2.64 Imp.qt)
With oil filter element replacement:
3.1 L (3.28 US qt) (2.72 Imp.qt)
ECA11620CAUTION:
●In order to prevent clutch slip-
page (since the engine oil also
lubricates the clutch), do not
mix any chemical additives. Do
not use oils with a diesel speci-
fication of “CD” or oils of a
higher quality than specified. In
addition, do not use oils la-
beled “ENERGY CONSERVING
II” or higher.
●Make sure that no foreign ma-
terial enters the crankcase.11. Start the engine, and then let it
idle for several minutes while
checking it for oil leakage. If oil is
leaking, immediately turn the en-
gine off and check for the cause.
12. Turn the engine off, and then
check the oil level and correct it if
necessary.
ECAB0030CAUTION:
The engine oil tank must be filled in
2 steps. First, fill the engine oil tank
with 2.0 L (2.11 US qt) (1.75 Imp.qt)
of the recommended engine oil.
Then, start the engine, race it 5 or 6
times, turn it off, and then add the
remainder of the engine oil.
PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR
Insufficient brake fluid may allow air to
enter the brake system, possibly caus-
ing it to become ineffective.
Before riding, check that the brake flu-
id is above the minimum level mark
and replenish if necessary. A low
brake fluid level may indicate worn
brake pads and/or brake system leak-
age. If the brake fluid level is low, be
sure to check the brake pads for wear
and the brake system for leakage.
Observe these precautions:
●When checking the fluid level,
make sure that the top of the
brake fluid reservoir is level.
●Use only the recommended qual-
ity brake fluid, otherwise the rub-
ber seals may deteriorate, caus-
ing leakage and poor braking
performance.
●Refill with the same type of brake
fluid. Mixing fluids may result in a
harmful chemical reaction and
lead to poor braking performance.
●Be careful that water does not en-
ter the brake fluid reservoir when
refilling. Water will significantly
lower the boiling point of the fluid
and may result in vapor lock.
●Brake fluid may deteriorate paint-
ed surfaces or plastic parts. Al-
ways clean up spilled fluid imme-
diately.
●As the brake pads wear, it is nor-
mal for the brake fluid level to
gradually go down. However, if
the brake fluid level goes down
suddenly, have a Yamaha dealer
check the cause.

Changing the brake fluid
Have a Yamaha dealer change the
brake fluid at the intervals specified in
the NOTE after the periodic mainte-
nance and lubrication chart. In addi-
tion, have the oil seals of the master
cylinders and calipers as well as the
brake hoses replaced at the intervals
listed below or whenever they are
damaged or leaking.
●Oil seals: Replace every two
years.
●Brake hoses: Replace every four
years.

2. Wipe the drive chain dry.
3. Thoroughly lubricate the drive
chain with a special O-ring chain
lubricant.
ECA11110CAUTION:
Do not use engine oil or any other
lubricants for the drive chain, as
they may contain substances that
could damage the O-rings.
EAU23100
Checking and lubricating
the cables
The operation of all control cables and
the condition of the cables should be
checked before each ride, and the ca-
bles and cable ends should be lubri-
cated if necessary. If a cable is dam-
aged or does not move smoothly,
have a Yamaha dealer check or re-
place it.
Recommended lubricant:
Engine oil
EWA10720
WARNING0
Damage to the outer sheath may in-
terfere with proper cable operation
and will cause the inner cable to
rust. Replace a damaged cable as
soon as possible to prevent unsafe
conditions.
EAU23111
Checking and lubricating
the throttle grip and cable
The operation of the throttle grip
should be checked before each ride.
In addition, the cable should be lubri-
cated at the intervals specified in the
periodic maintenance chart.

Checking and lubricating
the sidestand
The operation of the sidestand should
be checked before each ride, and the
sidestand pivot and metal-to-metal
contact surfaces should be lubricated
if necessary.
EWA10730
WARNING0
If the sidestand does not move up
and down smoothly, have a Yamaha
dealer check or repair it.
EAUB1240
Lubricating the side
suspension
The pivoting points of the side suspen-
sion must be lubricated at the intervals
specified in the periodic maintenance
and lubrication chart.
Recommended lubricant:
Lithium-soap-based grease
(all-purpose grease)
Recommended lubricant:
Swingarm pivots:
Bearing grease
Other pivoting points:
Lithium-soap-based grease
EAU23271
Checking the front fork
The condition and operation of the
front fork must be checked as follows
at the intervals specified in the period-
ic maintenance and lubrication chart.
To check the condition
EWA10750
WARNING0
Securely support the motorcycle so
that there is no danger of it falling
over.
Check the inner tubes for scratches,
damage and excessive oil leakage.
To check the operation
1. Place the motorcycle on a level
surface and hold it in an upright
position.
2. While applying the front brake,
push down hard on the handle-
bars several times to check if the
front fork compresses and re-
bounds smoothly.
